NASA AND THE MILITARY GO WAY BACK. IN FACT OUR EARLIEST ASTRONAUTS CAME FROM
THE MILITARY. THEY WERE ALL MILITARY. YOU CANNOT FIND A FIELD AT NASA WHERE
VETERANS ARE NOT INVOLVED. IN SOME CENTERS MUCH MORE THAN OTHERS BUT IN
EVERY CENTER THAT WE HAVE. THE U.S. OFFICE OF PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT TEAMED
WITH THE DEPARTMENTS OF DEFENSE, LABOR, VETERANS AFFAIRS AND HOMELAND SECURITY
TO CO-SPONSOR THE 2011 VETERANS EMPLOYMENT SYMPOSIUM. THIS
SYMPOSIUM PROVIDED A LEARNING FORUM WHERE FEDERAL HIRING MANAGERS, VETERAN EMPLOYMENT
PROGRAM MANAGERS AND HR PERSONNEL CAN DISCUSS STRATEGIES AND
THE ISSUES AFFECTING THE FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT OF VETERANS.
THE ONLY WAY WE ARE GOING TO HIRE WOUNDED WARRIORS IS WITH THIS EXTREME OUTREACH
AND AN EXTREME COMMITMENT BY EVERYBODY PARTICULARLY IN THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE WE
OWE THEM SO MUCH BUT ALSO THE PRIVATE SECTOR. 300 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE “EDUCATE AND MOTIVATE”
THEMED SYMPOSIUM WHERE PRESENTATIONS, WORKSHOPS, AND PANEL
DISCUSSIONS HIGHLIGHT THE VARIETY OF ISSUES AFFECTING VETERANS’
EMPLOYMENT IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
1.3 MILLION SPOUSES. 95% OF THEM ARE FEMALE. THEY ARE CULTURALLY AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE.
THEY HAVE STRONG WORK ETHICS AND THEY HAVE STRONG CORE VALUES.
MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM US? WHAT TOOLS DO YOU NEED FROM US?
WHAT TRAINING OR RESOURCES CAN WE PROVIDE TO HELP YOU TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IMPORTANT GOAL.
THE SYMPOSIUM BUILDS OFF OF PRESIDENT OBAMA'S VETERANS EMPLOYMENT
INITIATIVE WHICH HAS LEAD THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN THE HIRING OF 34,788
TOTAL VETERANS IN THE FIRST HALF OF FISCAL YEAR 2011 WHICH REPRESENTED
33 PERCENT OF TOTAL NEW HIRES ACROSS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DURING THE
SAME TIME PERIOD.
