Hello everyone!
Welcome to Idiom 100, where we learn 100 commonly used idioms by native English speakers.
All of the explanations are in English, so it might be challenging for you,
but just try to imagine the meanings in your head and study hard and soon you'll be able to use these idioms in your conversations.
Is everyone ready? Let's begin.
Hello everyone! Nice to see you again.
Today's idiom is: it's anyone's call.
It's anyone's call.
Alright, so let's imagine a picture in our heads and we have a group of people
standing in a circle and kind of chatting and talking to each other.
And all of a sudden, the phone rings.
Okay, and you answer the phone and the person on the phone asks,
'Can you help me? I have a big problem. I need someone to make a decision.'
Yeah, and you think, 'I can't answer,' so you put the phone in the group and you say, 'It's anyone's call,' yeah.
Do you want the phone? Do you want the call?
It's anyone's call.
Yeah, to help with the problem, to make a decision.
It's anyone's call.
Alright, so let's imagine this in our head as we listen to some examples.
It's anyone's call to organize the Christmas dinner, any volunteers?
I will, I have some great ideas.
Alright, so they had the problem, the decision-making was organizing Christmas dinner
and they kind of offered the job to the group.
It's anyone's call and one person said, 'I'll do it. I can do it.'
Okay, let's listen to another example.
The professor said it was anyone's call to think of the discussion material for next week!
Great, you should volunteer. He rarely gives that opportunity.
Alright, so the professor kind of gave the opportunity to help think of the discussion material for next week,
yeah, to contribute to the lesson.
And the other student said, 'Oh, you should volunteer. That's a big chance. Yeah, it's not often that he lets us help.'
Okay, so it was anyone's call.
He said any of the students could volunteer to help.
Alright, so 'it's anyone's call', if you guessed it, means allowing others to take charge or to help out, yeah, to solve the problem.
It's anyone's call. Anyone can volunteer or can take charge, okay?
And it's similar, if you remember, 'It's your call.'
That's more direct to one person, right?
It's your call. It's your choice and your chance to make the decision. It's your call.
And it's anyone's call means it's a group.
Yeah, anyone can do it.
Okay, so those are very similar and it just depends on the situation.
If you're talking to one person and you can't decide and you want them to decide, you can tell them, 'It's your call. Please decide.'
And if you want to open it to the group, yeah, 'It's anyone's call.'
Yeah, maybe I don't really want to do it, but you are welcome to do it.
Okay, so next time you have an opportunity to do something in this offering a choice or decision making,
then you can offer it to the group, 'It's anyone's call. Yeah, go ahead.'
And I'll see you next time.
