[ all singing ] OH, SAY, CAN YOU SEE, BY THE DAWN'S EARLY
LIGHT, WHAT SO PROUDLY WE HAIL'D AT THE TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING? WHOSE BROAD STRIPES AND BRIGHT
STARS, THRO' THE PERILOUS FIGHT, O'ER THE RAMPARTS WE WATCH'D, WERE SO GALLANTLY STREAMING?
AND THE ROCKETS' RED GLARE, THE BOMBS BURSTING IN AIR, GAVE PROOF THRO' THE NIGHT THAT OUR
FLAG WAS STILL THERE. O SAY, DOES THAT STAR SPANGLED BANNER YET WAVE O'ER THE LAND OF
THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE? [ applause ]

QUISENBERRY, DR. DELAMONTAGNE, DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS, FACULTY,

WHICH IS THE FIRST MAY COMMENCEMENT TO BE HELD IN THE NEW CONVOCATION CENTER. HOW

AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FACULTY MEMBERS PRESENT HERE THIS EVENING FOR THEIR
HARD WORK AND DEDICATION ON BEHALF OF OUR STUDENTS AND, SOON-TO-BE, GRADUATES. THIS
UNIVERSITY OWES YOU A DEBT OF GRATITUDE BOTH FOR THE UNIQUE CONTRIBUTIONS YOU MAKE TO THE
SUCCESS OF OUR GRADUATES, AND FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL DEGREE OF EXCELLENCE THAT YOU BRING TO THOSE
CONTRIBUTIONS. THANK YOU, AND CONGRATULATIONS, FOR PRODUCING ANOTHER OUTSTANDING GRADUATING
CLASS AT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. I WILL NOW ASK THE FACULTY MEMBERS PRESENT
HERE THIS EVENING TO STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED. FACULTY.
[ applause ] THANK YOU. THANK YOU. CAL U WAS FOUNDED
IN 1852 AND THE YEAR 2012 MARKS THE UNIVERSITY'S FIRST 160 YEARS OF EXISTENCE. WE COMMEMORATED
THE UNIVERSITY’S SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION TEN YEARS AGO IN 2002 WITH A YEARLONG SERIES
OF ACTIVITIES, CULMINATING WITH THE DEDICATION OF THE MICHAEL AND JULIA KARA ALUMNI HOUSE
AT THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF THE CAMPUS. THE KARA ALUMNI HOUSE IS A TANGIBLE SYMBOL OF THE GREAT
RESPECT AND ADMIRATION WHICH CAL U HAS FOR ITS 55,000 LIVING ALUMNI. IF YOU HAVE NOT
ALREADY DONE SO, GRADUATES, PLEASE VISIT THE KARA ALUMNI HOUSE. IT WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT
TO BE THE FOCAL POINT FOR OUR ALUMNI AS THEY RETURN TO CAMPUS IN THE FUTURE. THE KARA HOUSE
HAS MANY BEAUTIFUL FEATURES, ALL DESIGNED TO SAY TO OUR ALUMNI, "YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
HERE, NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY." FROM THIS DAY FORWARD I HOPE YOU WILL DROP BY THE KARA
ALUMNI HOUSE WHENEVER YOU ARE IN THE AREA. I PROMISE YOU THAT YOU WILL BE WARMLY RECEIVED
THERE. AS PROVOST JONES MENTIONED, REPRESENTATIVES FROM OUR CAL U FOR LIFE OFFICE WILL PRESENT
EACH GRADUATE WITH A CAL U ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PIN AS YOU DEPART THE STAGE AFTER RECEIVING
YOUR DIPLOMA. I ASK YOU TO WEAR YOUR PIN PROUDLY AS A REMINDER OF THE MUTUAL COMMITMENT THAT
WE CALL CAL U FOR LIFE. WE WANT EACH OF YOU TO FORGE A LIFELONG RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR
ALMA MATER, BUT IT IS A TWO WAY STREET. THE UNIVERSITY WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE AS A
RESOURCE FOR YOU EVEN AFTER YOU RECEIVE YOUR DIPLOMA. IN FACT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
AS CAL U ALUMNI, EACH OF YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR CAREER SERVICES FOR LIFE. SO SHOULD
YOU LOSE A JOB YEARS FROM NOW, OR SEEK TO CHANGE CAREERS AT ANY TIME IN THE FUTURE,
OUR CAREER SERVICES PERSONNEL WILL BE WILLING AND EAGER TO HELP YOU. AND BEYOND THAT I
PERSONALLY PLEDGE TO WORK HARD EVERY DAY AND TO ENCOURAGE EVERY CAL U EMPLOYEE TO WORK
HARD EVERY DAY TO MAKE YOUR DIPLOMA, THE ONE YOU WILL RECEIVE TODAY, EVER MORE VALUABLE
IN THE YEARS AHEAD. WE HAVE PLANNED A MAGNIFICENT CELEBRATION THIS EVENING TO HONOR YOU, THE
GRADUATES OF THE CLASS OF 2012. WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THIS CELEBRATION.
YOU HAVE ALREADY HELPED US SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. LATER IN THE PROGRAM, WE ENCOURAGE
YOU TO HELP US SING THE ALMA MATER. YOU HAVE ALREADY HEARD ONE LOVELY MUSICAL SELECTION
BY THE UNIVERSITY CHOIR. LATER, YOU WILL HEAR STILL ANOTHER ONE. YOU HAVE HEARD EARLIER
AN INSPIRING INVOCATION. LATER YOU WILL HEAR A VERY MOVING BENEDICTION. IN BETWEEN, WE
WILL HONOR EACH AND EVERY GRADUATE. AS YOU COME UP ON STAGE, YOU WILL RECEIVE YOUR REAL
DIPLOMA, NOT A BLANK: A DIPLOMA WITH YOUR NAME ON IT. THE ONE YOU WORKED SO HARD TO EARN.
THE ONE THAT WILL HANG PROUDLY ON YOUR WALL FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. THE ONE THAT, PERHAPS,
SOME OF YOUR RELATIVES WEREN'T SURE YOU WOULD GET IN THEIR LIFETIME! BUT THIS EVENING, YOU
PROVED ANY SKEPTICS WRONG! GRADUATES, IT IS ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE THAT ON THIS SPECIAL
DAY, YOUR GRADUATION DAY, THAT I WOULD CHALLENGE YOU TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR LEGACY AS A PERSON
WILL BE. CAL U HAS ADOPTED THE CORE VALUES OF INTEGRITY, CIVILITY, AND RESPONSIBILITY,
AND IT IS OUR FONDEST WISH THAT YOU WILL MAKE THOSE CORE VALUES A PART OF YOUR PERSONAL
LEGACY AS WELL. WE WANT YOU TO BE REMEMBERED AS A PERSON WHO EXEMPLIFIED THOSE IDEALS,
WHICH IS NOT TO SUGGEST THAT THEY ARE THE ONLY IDEALS WORTHY OF BEING EMULATED. BUT
THEY CERTAINLY ARE A GOOD PLACE FROM WHICH TO BEGIN. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT THE BEST WAY
TO PREDICT OUR FUTURE IS TO CREATE IT. ON THIS, YOUR GRADUATION DAY, THAT VERY OPPORTUNITY
LIES BEFORE YOU. YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHOOSE AND THE POWER TO CREATE YOUR OWN FUTURE. YOU
HAVE STUDIED HARD, YOU HAVE DEVELOPED YOUR SKILLS, AND YOU HAVE INVESTED THE EFFORT,
AND YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SUCCESS, AND TONIGHT YOU WILL CLAIM A TOKEN OF THAT SUCCESS AS
YOU RECEIVE YOUR DIPLOMA AND BEGIN TO BUILD YOUR LEGACY. THE WORD "LEGACY" HAS SEVERAL
MEANINGS INCLUDING THIS ONE: "SOMETHING THAT IS HANDED DOWN OR REMAINS FROM A PREVIOUS
GENERATION OR TIME." BUT IT ALSO HAS ANOTHER MEANING: THE LEGACY OF A PERSON IS ALSO THOUGHT
TO BE WHAT THAT PERSON IS REMEMBERED FOR AFTER THEY LEAVE THIS EARTHLY PLANET. THE WORD IS
ALSO USED TO REFER TO A PERSON’S "SPIRIT," ALTHOUGH NOT NECESSARILY IN A RELIGIOUS SENSE.
BUT THE KEY POINT IS THIS: THE SPIRIT OF A PERSON LIVES ON AFTER THEM, EVEN WITHOUT A
RELIGIOUS CONTEXT, AND THAT SPIRIT IS THEIR LEGACY. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SPIRIT OF ADOLPH
HITLER LIVES ON IN EVERY PERSON WHO IS FILLED WITH RACIAL OR ETHNIC HATRED, AND WHO ACTS
ON THAT HATRED. THE SPIRIT OF ADOLPH HITLER IS ALSO, QUITE CLEARLY, HIS LEGACY. IT IS
HOW HE IS REMEMBERED, AND WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED. THE SPIRIT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ON THE OTHER
HAND, ALSO LIVES ON IN EVERY PERSON WHO BELIEVES THAT ALL MEN AND WOMEN ARE CREATED EQUAL,
AND WHO BELIEVES THAT FREEDOM WITH JUSTICE IS THE RIGHT OF EVERY PERSON. THE SPIRIT OF
LINCOLN IS ALSO HIS LEGACY AS WELL. AS A FINAL EXAMPLE, THE SPIRIT AND LEGACY OF MOTHER TERESA
LIVE ON IN EVERY SOCIAL WORKER, EVERY NURSE, AND EVERY CAREGIVER WHO DEVOTES HIS OR HER
LIFE TO HELPING OTHERS. TO THE GRADUATES HERE THIS EVENING I SAY: MAY YOUR SPIRIT ENCOURAGE
THE BEST IN OTHERS, AND MAY YOUR LEGACY BE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL WHO FOLLOW YOU. IN CLOSING,
THIS IS YOUR UNIVERSITY. FOR ALL TIME TO COME, CAL U WILL BE YOUR ALMA MATER, AND YOU WILL
ALWAYS BE WELCOME HERE. I INVITE YOU TO RETURN OFTEN AND TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH US. BE SURE
TO LET US KNOW ABOUT YOUR LIFE AFTER YOU LEAVE HERE. PLEASE KNOW THAT YOUR UNIVERSITY,CALIFORNIA
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA,IS EXTREMELY PROUD OF YOU, AND YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. CONGRATULATIONS
AND BEST WISHES ON YOUR MAGNIFICENT ACHIEVEMENT! THANK YOU. STAY WELL.
[ applause ]

(ROBERT DELAMONTAGNE) HELLO. IF SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME IN 1966, THAT
SOMEDAY I WOULD BE STANDING BEFORE A GROUP OF GRADUATE STUDENTS AT THEIR COMMENCEMENT
IN A BUILDING LIKE THIS, I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THAT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. I COULD NOT HAVE
CONCEIVED OF BEING EITHER BEING HERE AT THIS TIME, AND PARTICULARLY NOT IN A BUILDING LIKE
THIS. BUT HERE I AM STANDING BEFORE YOU AT THIS INTERSECTION OF SPACE AND TIME. WHAT
A STORY TO TELL, BUT WE ALL HAVE STORIES. IN FACT, THE TRUTH IS WE ARE A STORY. YOUR
LIFE IS A STORY. WE CREATE OUR STORIES EVERY DAY, EVERY TIME WE MAKE A DECISION. WELL,
I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY STORY WITH YOU BECAUSE, OF THE ROLE THAT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY HAS
PLAYED IN MY LIFE AND ACTUALLY THE TRAJECTORY OF MY LIFE. I WAS BORN IN A SMALL TOWN IN
SOUTH WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, AND I COULD BE CHARACTERIZED AS AN UNINSPIRED STUDENT.
I DID NOT MAKE BAD GRADES, BUT I DIDN'T MAKE GOOD ONES EITHER. NO ONE EVER SAID I HAD
ANY ABILITY OR TALENT OR APTITUDE IN ANY WAY, AND THE REASON WAS I NEVER EXHIBITED ANY.
MY AVERAGE WAYS CONTINUED THROUGH GRADE SCHOOL, AND I LEARNED THAT I HAD A COMBINATION OF
DISINTEREST AND ADD. I DIDN'T DO WELL, BUT I DIDN'T CARE. A CONFOUNDING EFFECT WAS
THAT RATHER THAN BEING LEFT-LOBE DOMINATED IN HOW I THOUGHT, I WAS RIGHT-LOBE DOMINATED.
THEREFORE, I THOUGHT IN METAPHORS AND CONCEPTS. I DIDN'T THINK IN ANALYTICAL BITS AND BYTES
AND PROCEDURES, NOT A GREAT PROFILE FOR A SCHOLAR. WHEN MY AVERAGE WAYS CONTINUED
ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. NEVER MADE GREAT GRADES; NEVER MADE POOR ONES. BUT I DID
DISCOVER THAT I HAD ONE TALENT, AND THAT WAS BEING A BASKETBALL PLAYER. I WAS FORTUNATE
ENOUGH TO WIN A SCHOLARSHIP TO A SMALL COLLEGE IN NORTH WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. AT THE TIME
IT WAS A BASKETBALL POWERHOUSE. MY FRESHMAN YEAR THEY CAME IN FOURTH IN THE NATION IN
NAI LEAGUE. AT THE BEGINNING THAT I WENT TO THE SCHOOL, I KNEW IN ONE WEEK THAT IT
WAS A BIG MISTAKE. I KNEW THAT I DIDN'T BELONG THERE AND IT COULD NOT FULFILL MY REQUIREMENTS,
AND I WAS NOT HAPPY. SO I TRANSFERRED TO CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY, AND I CONTINUED MY
AVERAGE WAYS, BUT WHEN I STARTED MY SENIOR YEAR, I WAS TAKING A PHILOSOPHY COURSE, I
THINK IT WAS AN ELECTIVE. I WILL NEVER FORGOT THAT I WAS , THE LECTURE WAS ON ARISTOLIAN
LOGIC, AND FOR SOME REASON THAT I STILL DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND, I UNDERSTOOD IT WITH ABSOLUTE
AND COMPLETE CLARITY. AND I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE, THE INTERSECTION
OF INTEREST AND APTITUDE MANIFESTED ITSELF AT THAT POINT, AT THAT MOMENT FOR ME. AND
I HAD AN INSIGHT. AND THE INSIGHT WAS, MAYBE I CAN DO MORE. MAYBE THERE IS SOME LATENT
ABILITY WITHIN ME, RESIDING SOMEWHERE, THAT I NEEDED TO EXPLORE. MAYBE, I COULD DO MORE. WELL,
I SECURED A TEACHING POSITION IN MARYLAND AND TAUGHT 12TH GRADE ENGLISH. I LOVED EVERY
MINUTE OF IT BUT I WANTED TO EXPLORE MORE ASPECTS OF LIFE AND BUSINESS AND WORK. WELL,
I WAS VISITING MY SISTER IN HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA , AND I ANSWERED AN AD IN THE PAPER , THIS
WAS OVER EASTER BREAK , FOR A TECHNICAL WRITER FOR RCA. I WENT ON THE INTERVIEW
AND GOT THE JOB. SO WHEN THE SCHOOL YEAR WAS OVER, I WENT TO HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, AND
BEGAN WORKING AS A TECHNICAL WRITER. NOW WERNHER VAN BRAUN WAS ON THE RED STONE ARSENAL
WITH HIS TEAM OF SCIENTISTS BUILDING THE ROCKET TECHNOLOGY THAT WE EVENTUALLY USED TO PUT
A MAN ON THE MOON. MY JOB WAS TO TAKE THESE ENGINEERING DOCUMENTS, REWRITE THEM, HAVE
THEM PUBLISHED, AND HAVE THEM SENT TO THE PENTAGON SO THEY KNEW WHAT PROGRESS WAS BEING
MADE. THIS WAS A SUPER SECRET. I COULDN'T EVEN GO TO THE BATHROOM WITHOUT PUTTING MY
DOCUMENTS IN A SAFE. AFTER A WHILE I GOT A PROMOTION TO BE A FIELD RECRUITER. THIS
POSITION WAS IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA. MY JOB WAS TO STAFF A SECRET, UNDERWATER TESTING
BASE THAT AMERICA AND GREAT BRITAIN USED TO TEST ALL OF OUR WEAPON SYSTEMS, OUR UNDERWATER
WEAPON SYSTEMS. I TRAVELED ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES. I INTERVIEWED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE.
I HIRED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. MATHEMATICIANS AND PROGRAMMERS AND OCEANOGRAPHERS AND RADAR
TECHNICAL , AND RADAR TECHNICAL TYPES. AND I TRAVELED 70 PERCENT OF THE TIME AND
WENT TO ALMOST EVERY MAJOR CITY IN THE COUNTRY. I DISCOVERED I HAD ONE APTITUDE THAT I DIDN'T
KNOW I HAD. I HAD THE ABILITY TO SIT DOWN WITH SOMEBODY, IN ABOUT 20 MINUTES, SOMEHOW
KNOW ABOUT THEM. HAVE SOME WAY OF LOOKING INTO THEM AND KNOWING IF THEY WOULD BE AN
HONEST, GOOD EMPLOYEE, WHETHER THEY HAD THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE BASE AND SO FORTH. WELL
I DID THAT, AND I HAD , WHEN I DISCOVERED THIS APTITUDE, I REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS KIND
OF STRANGE BECAUSE ONCE I GET TO KNOW SOMEBODY, I MAY FORGOT THEIR NAME BUT I NEVER FORGOT
WHO THEY ARE. I NEVER FORGOT THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS ABOUT THAT PERSON. FOR EXAMPLE,
I STILL REMEMBER THE COLOR OF THE COAT MY ROOMMATE WORE AT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY
IN 1965. A BIT STRANGE. BUT AFTER I MARRIED, I LEFT THIS POSITION
AND I TOOK A JOB WITH A NEW SMALL COMPANY IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. AND THEY WANTED TO CREATE
A PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT. AND SO THERE WERE FIVE OF US AND THE NAME OF THIS LITTLE, SMALL
COMPANY WAS CALLED BURGER KING, MAYBE YOU HAVE HAD A WHOPPER AT ONE TIME IN YOUR LIFE.
I WAS THEIR FIRST PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATOR. SO I WORKED THERE FOR A WHILE AND REALIZED
THAT I HAD A DRIVING AMBITION TO GET A MASTERS DEGREE. , MAYBE JUST AS YOU HAVE. IT WAS
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO ME IN MY LIFE. SO I GOT A JOB WITH A MAJOR COMPANY IN ATLANTA,
GEORGIA THAT WAS CLOSE TO GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY AND I BEGAN MY MASTER'S DEGREE. NOW I WASN'T
FILLED WITH A GREAT DEAL OF CONFIDENCE THAT I COULD DO MASTER'S DEGREE WORK, GIVEN MY
CHECKERED PAST, BUT I THOUGHT I REALLY WANTED TO TRY IT. SO I DID IT. I WENT THROUGH
AND I GOT MY MASTER'S DEGREE AND I ENJOYED IT IMMENSELY. SO I DECIDED THAT I WOULD CONTINUE
ON AND GET MY DOCTORATE, WHICH IS WHAT I DID. AND, SO HERE I AM. I AM 78 YEARS OLD , EXCUSE
ME, I AM 34 YEARS OLD IN 1978. [ laughter ]
I HAVE A FRESHLY MINTED PHD, AND I BECOME THE VICE PRESIDENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES, I HAVE
55 EMPLOYEES REPORTING TO ME, I AM AN OFFICER OF THE COMPANY, AND I DECIDED I DIDN'T WANT
TO BE A CORPORATE EXECUTIVE, THAT IS NOT THE PATH THAT I WANTED. SO I LEFT THAT ORGANIZATION
AND I WENT TO WORK FOR A CONSULTING FIRM IN PRINCETON. AND WHILE THERE, THIS NEW PRODUCT
CAME ON THE MARKET THAT WAS RATHER INTRIGUING, IT WAS CALLED MICROCOMPUTER. AND I BOUGHT
ONE. IT WAS AN APPLE II. AND SO I HAD A HOUSE GUEST STAYING WITH ME FOR THE NIGHT,
AND AFTER DINNER HE AND I DECIDED TO PLAY , TO TURN THIS THING ONTO SEE WHAT IT
COULD DO. SO I HAD BOUGHT AN ADVENTURE GAME JUST TO SEE , JUST TO HAVE SOMETHING
TO PUT IN THE COMPUTER. SO I PUT THE ADVENTURE GAME IN THERE AND HE AND I SAT DOWN AFTER
DINNER AND STARTED PLAYING IT. WELL, WE STAYED UP TILL 4 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING, FLYING
AN AIRPLANE, LANDING ON ISLANDS, CALCULATING WIND RESISTANCE, SPEED, AND DISTANCE ALL IN
AN EFFORT TO SAVE THE PRINCESS. [ laughter ]
WELL, WE DID SAVE THE PRINCESS. AND I REMEMBER ABOUT FOUR CLOCK IN THE MORNING, PUSHING MY
CHAIR BACK AND REALIZING THAT THIS MACHINE WAS GOING TO CHANGE EDUCATION AS WE KNOW IT.
AND I DECIDED RIGHT THEN TO START A COMPANY AND DEVELOP EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY. WHEN
WE DID THIS, THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A COLOR SCREEN. THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS
A GRAPHICS PACKAGE. THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A COMPILER. WE WROTE THESE PROGRAMS AND
INTERPRETED BASIC AND DREW LINES ON THE SCREEN AND ANIMATED THEM. WELL, WHEN WE SHOWED
THESE PROGRAMS TO COMPANIES, THEY ACTED LIKE WE HAD PUT MAGIC IN A BOX. THEY COULDN'T
BELIEVE IT. SO THE COMPANY STARTED. WHILE I WAS DOING THIS, I HIRED TWO YOUNG COLLEGE
STUDENTS AND THEY WORKED IN MY BASEMENT, MY BASEMENT. AND THAT IS HOW THIS COMPANY GOT
STARTED. WE GREW THE COMPANY OVER THE YEARS, AND DURING THIS TIME I DECIDED THAT I WAS
GOING TO WRITE A PUBLICATION ABOUT EDUCATION AND COMPUTERS AND IT WAS THE FIRST PUBLICATION
EVER DEDICATED TO THE USE OF EDUCATION FOR EDUCATION, IT WAS CALLED THE CBT REPORT.
WHEN I PUBLISHED THIS FOR TWO AND A HALF YEARS, AND I COULD NOT GET ANYONE INTERESTED IN READING
IT. THE REACTION I GOT FROM THE MARKETPLACE WAS, WHY WOULD ANYBODY EVER WANT TO PUT EDUCATION
ON A COMPUTER? AS THE COMPANY GREW, WE ENDED UP ONE OF THE MAJOR COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING
COMPANIES IN THE UNITED STATES. WE HAD A 65 PERCENT MARKET SHARE IN THE ENERGY INDUSTRY
AND WE WERE PARTNERS WITH THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION FOR GENERATING PROGRAMS TO
TEACH MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURERS, PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES, AND FOOD COMPANIES HOW TO ABIDE
BY THE REGULATIONS. IN 2007 WE SOLD THE COMPANY FOR OVER $100 MILLION. THE OWNERS
OF THE COMPANY AT THE TIME WERE TWO VENTURE CAPITALIST FIRMS IN NEW YORK CITY. THEY
MADE 400 PERCENT RETURN ON THEIR INVESTMENT IN FOUR YEARS. THAT'S THE STORY. WELL,
IN PREPARING THIS PRESENTATION, I THOUGHT, WHAT IS IT THAT I CAN , WHAT DID I LEARN
OVER THE YEARS THAT I CAN SHARE WITH YOU THAT MIGHT HELP YOU DOWN THE ROAD? I CAME UP
WITH FIVE THINGS. NUMBER ONE, ONE INSIGHT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE. I WILL BE FOREVER
IN THE DEBT OF CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY FOR PROVIDING THE HEAT AND LIGHT THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THAT
ONE INSIGHT; MAYBE I CAN DO MORE. NUMBER TWO, NEVER BECOME AN OBSTACLE TO YOURSELF.
I RECALL MAKING THE DECISION THAT LIFE MIGHT THROW ME ALL TYPES OF CURVES AND OBSTACLES,
BUT THAT WOULD NEVER ORIGINATE FROM ME. THE WORLD WOULD HAVE TO SIGNAL TO ME I COULDN'T
DO SOMETHING BUT I WOULD NEVER STAND IN MY OWN WAY. OFTEN PEOPLE STOP DOING THINGS
THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THEM BECAUSE , OUT OF FEAR OR LACK OF CONFIDENCE. NEVER EVER
STOP YOURSELF. LET THE WORLD DICTATE TO YOU WHAT YOU CAN AND CAN'T DO BUT NEVER EVER
STOP YOURSELF. NUMBER THREE, DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO INCREASE YOUR SELF-AWARENESS.
WHO ARE YOU? WHAT IS YOUR INTRINSIC NATURE? WHERE DO YOUR INTERESTS, TALENTS, AND ABILITIES
LIE? ARE YOU CREATIVE OR ANALYTICAL? YOU SEE YOU CANNOT MAKE GOOD DECISIONS FOR YOURSELF
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SMALL SEEMINGLY INSIGNIFICANT
FEEDBACK YOU RECEIVE IN YOUR LIFE. SOMETIMES THESE APPEAR AS SOFT WHISPERS, GUT FEELINGS,
OR A GOOD, HONEST DISCUSSION BY A FRIEND. LEARN FROM THEM AND BUILD YOUR SELF-CONCEPT
AS ACCURATELY AND , AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. EVERY TRULY SUCCESSFUL PERSON I HAVE
EVER MET, NOT RICH, BUT SUCCESSFUL, HAD A HIGH DEGREE OF SELF-AWARENESS. NUMBER
FOUR, CHOOSE A PATH WITH A HEART. BY THIS, I MEAN CHOOSE WORK THAT IS CONNECTED TO YOUR
INNER MOST BEING. IF YOU ACCOMPLISH THIS, ENERGY BECOMES RECIPROCAL. FEW DO WORK
YOU LOVE, YOU RECEIVE POSITIVE ENERGY IN RETURN BY YOUR EFFORTS, YOUR ENERGY GETS REFRESHED
SIMPLY BY PERFORMING THE WORK. IN THE 25 YEARS THAT I RAN EDUNEERING, I WAS NEVER BORED
FOR ONE SECOND. YOU WILL KNOW IF YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE WRONG PATH BECAUSE YOUR ENERGY
WILL BE DEPLETED. IT WILL BE CONSTANTLY DRAINED. IT WILL NOT BE REPLENISHED BY THE
POSITIVE ENERGY YOU COULD RECEIVE FROM A PATH BETTER SUITED TO YOUR INTRINSIC NATURE.
IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO FOLLOW A PATH JUST FOR MONEY, FAME, OR SECURITY IF IT IS NOT CONNECTED
TO YOUR HEART. FIND SOMETHING THAT ENRICHES YOU EVERY DAY. FINALLY, NUMBER FIVE, MAKE
THE PRODUCT OF YOUR LIFE A POSITIVE ONE.ARE YOUR FAMILY AND COWORKERS AND COMMUNITY BETTER
OFF BECAUSE OF YOUR INVOLVEMENT. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, WHERE
A SMALL CHANGE IN ONE PLACE CAN RESULT IN A VERY LARGE EFFECT IN ANOTHER. IMAGINE
THE BENEFICIAL CHANGE THAT COULD OCCUR IF WE UNLEASH THE POSITIVE ENERGY THAT IS IN
ALL OF US. MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE YOU ARE IN IT. ADD VALUE WHEREVER
YOU CAN. AT THE END OF YOUR CAREER YOU WILL RECEIVE GREAT SATISFACTION FROM KNOWING THAT
YOU WERE A POSITIVE FORCE, THAT YOU ACTIVATED THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS
AT SOME DISTANCE, PLACE, AND TIME. THESE ARE THE IMPORTANT LESSONS I LEARNED FROM MY
LIFE EXPERIENCES AND I HOPE THEY ARE HELPFUL TO YOU IN THE FUTURE. AND I HOPE THAT YOU
ARE AS PROUD OF YOUR NEW DEGREE FROM THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY AS I WAS BACK IN 1966.
THANK YOU. [ applause ]
(GERALDINE JONES) THE UNIVERSITY CHOIR WILL NOW PRESENT ANOTHER
SELECTION FOR YOUR LISTENING ENJOYMENT "I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS" BY FOREIGNER. SOLOIST,
MOLLY MALADY.
[ singing ] I GOTTA TAKE A LITTLE TIME, A LITTLE TIME
TO LOOK AROUND ME. I BETTER READ BETWEEN THE LINES. IN MY LIFE THERE'S BEEN HEART
ACHE AND PAIN I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN FACE IT AGAIN, CAN'T STOP NOW, I'VE TRAVELED SO FAR
TO CHANGE THIS LONELY LIFE. I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. I WANT YOU TO SHOW ME. I
WANNA FEEL WHAT LOVE IS. AND I KNOW YOU CAN SHOW ME. GOTTA TAKE A LITTLE TIME.
A LITTLE TIME TO LOOK AROUND ME. NO WHERE LEFT TO HIDE. IT LOOKS LIKE LOVE HAS FINALLY
FOUND ME. IN MY LIFE THERE'S BEEN HEART ACHE AND PAIN. I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN FACE
IT AGAIN, CAN'T STOP NOW, I'VE TRAVELED SO FAR TO CHANGE THIS LONELY LIFE. I WANNA
KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. I WANT YOU TO SHOW ME. I WANNA FEEL WHAT LOVE IS, AND I KNOW YOU
CAN SHOW ME. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. I WANT YOU TO SHOW ME. I WANNA FEEL WHAT
LOVE IS. AND I KNOW YOU CAN SHOW ME. I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. I WANT YOU TO SHOW
ME. I WANNA FEEL WHAT LOVE IS, AND I KNOW YOU CAN SHOW ME.

HOOD DENOTING YOUR NEWLY COMPLETED MASTER’S DEGREE. ONCE YOU HAVE BEEN VESTED YOU WILL
PRESENT YOURSELF TO PRESIDENT ARMENTI, IN FULL ACADEMIC REGALIA, TO RECEIVE YOUR DIPLOMA.
THIS PUBLIC DISPLAY OF YOUR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IS PART OF A LONG TRADITION. WITH YOUR INDULGENCE,
I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A FEW MOMENTS TO RELATE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ACADEMIC HOOD AND ITS
MEANING. THIS REGALIA HAD ITS ORIGINS IN THE 12TH AND 13TH CENTURIES IN WESTERN EUROPE.
THE ACADEMIC HOOD IS A DESCENDENT OF THE COWL, AN ITEM OF CLOTHING WORN BY MEDIEVAL MONKS
TO WARD OFF THE COLD. THE COWL WAS WORN OVER A SHORT CAPE WITH A LONG TAIL KNOWN AS A LEAR
PIPE. BY THE YEAR 1450, THIS TYPE OF HOOD HAD DISAPPEARED AS EVERYDAY WEAR …EXCEPT
IN UNIVERSITIES SUCH AS OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE. SOMETIME DURING THE 15TH CENTURY, THE CAPE
WAS ABANDONED ALTOGETHER, AND THE MODERN-DAY ACADEMIC HOOD WAS BORN. THE MASTER’S HOOD
IS 3 ? FEET LONG. IT HAS A 3 INCH WIDE BAND THAT DENOTES THE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE: FOR
EXAMPLE, GOLDEN-YELLOW DENOTES THE FIELD OF SCIENCE. CURRENTLY, BY INTERCOLLEGIATE
CODE, THERE ARE 26 OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED COLORS. THE COLORS ON THE INSIDE OF THE HOOD DENOTE
THE INSTITUTE , THE INSTITUTION CONFERRING THE DEGREE. YOU CAN SEE IN THIS HOOD THE COLORS
OF CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA ,- RED AND BLACK,ARE PRESENT. IN JUST A FEW
MOMENTS, THE HERALD, DR. KATE MITCHEM, WILL ANNOUNCE EACH CANDIDATE. AS THEY ARE VESTED
WITH THEIR ACADEMIC HOODS, WE WILL BE CARRYING OUT AN 800-YEAR TRADITION. IT IS WITH PRIDE
THAT I WILL SEND EACH CANDIDATE, IN FULL ACADEMIC REGALIA, TO PRESIDENT ARMENTI TO RECEIVE THEIR
DIPLOMA. THE DEGREE CANDIDATES FROM THE SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH WILL RISE,
PLEASE. MR. PRESIDENT, THE FOLLOWING PERSONS HAVE COMPLETED ALL THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS TEACHING, MASTER OF EDUCATION, MASTER OF SCIENCE, AND MASTER
OF SOCIAL WORK. THEY HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE FACULTY AND ARE PRESENTED FOR THESE DEGREES.
DR. MITCHEM, PLEASE ANNOUNCE THE SPECIFIC CURRICULUM AND THE CANDIDATES.
