I started that band The Cardinals or kind of put that band together
I'm proud of everything we did
I think we maybe shouldn't have made the last record
There were so many songs and
Protools was becoming staple in the studio, and we were abusing it
I wonder if maybe when the original members of that band kinda
split from The Cardinals
most of them
if I should've just called it and got back to this
cos I really like this
I really like playing
if you're playing by yourself
or even playing an acoustic instrument
with other instruments that are playing within
the reach of their own volume
I really think dynamic properties happen
and it really gives songs so much room
and that's how they're written so as soon as I did it I realised
I'm like...
"Man, this is how I wrote these. What am I doing?"
When I left my former label I think I had a nine-album deal
and some of the records I had made weren't counting
There's so many loopholes and tricks that kept me in
longer than I probably should have been...
uh... which is unfortunate because I wasn't making any of the money
and uh... i think it's okay to say that
and if they have a problem with that they can kiss my ass
but it's true I just really wanna make music
and have it be simple and I like for the art to be beautiful
and to matter cos I think that there's enough disposable culture
specifically in the country that I am from
that you should put the effort in
By the time it was time for me to make a serious record
um... I just made it on my own
We called in the band, we did it all analog - it never touched a computer
There won't be computers on my records ever again
Can you tell that my glasses are fogging up? Cos it's awesome!
When it was done, I was like, "Ok, I better get some distribution"
that's where a larger label really can help
Don't laugh - why are you laughing at me?!
Oh, my God
It was cool - I was able to go to them
and say "Hey, this is done. This is what it sounds like."
"It's not really negotiable. The art is done."
"But if you like this, we can participate"
So I kinda have this new easiness with it where i feel like,
"Ok, I can do this. This is ok"
I don't remember Were we wild and young?
All that's faded into memory
I feel like somebody I don't know
Are we really who we used to be?
Am I really who i was?
The lights will draw you in
And the dark will take you down
And the night will break your heart
But only if you're lucky now
Waiting outside while you find your keys
Like bags of trash in the blackening snow
City of neon and toes that freeze
We've got nothing and nowhere to go
We've got nothing and nowhere
And the lights will draw you in
And the dark will take you down
And the night will break your heart
But only if you're lucky now
And if the lights will draw you in
And the dark can take you down
But love can mend your heart
But only if you're lucky now
I don't remember Were we wild and young?
All that's faded into memory
I feel like somebody I don't know
Are we really who we used to be?
Am I really who i was?
I have a lot of black metal albums
that's what I listen to predominantly, and extreme metal
>> But you've just recently made a metal record
Oh, yeah - Orion
It's about the Orion Armada who are fighting Gorgon Master Of War
and his army of ice robots called the Ice Brigade
>> So it's a concept album?
It has this gate-fold sleeve, it's amazing
You've no idea how funny it is, it's so funny
I love that I did it
It's so dumb and great, you know?
and like inappropriate in every way and I'm really happy I made it
Guess I'll show my hand
Either way i'm losing
Used to have the goods
Back when I couldn't use 'em
Standing by the ocean
Like I'm frozen here in time
So don't let go Don't change your mind
If the stars fall into the ocean side
Someone pulled the ribbons from my eyes
Free my soul
Let it roll away
On an invisible riverside
I didn't travel far
But my feet were moving
Couldn't read the signs
They were too confusing
I was driving to the ocean
On Sunset Boulevard
So don't let go
Don't change your mind
If the stars fall into the ocean side
Someone pull the ribbons from my eyes
Free my soul
Let it roll away
On an invisible riverside
Let it roll away
Let it roll away
Let it roll away
Let it roll away
Let it roll
I wanna lay my head
Forever on your shoulder
Stay with me, my love
Now and when we're older
We'll take it to the ocean
We got nothing now but time
So don't let go
Don't change your mind
If the stars fall into the ocean side
Someone pull the ribbons from my eyes
Free my soul
Let it roll away
On an invisible riverside
As he stared
Past the fire
His hunger to leave Well, it gnawed
His poor heart alive
His skin smelt like black cherry blossom perfume
The sailboats, they all sailed by
And a river she cried
And the wind was suddenly sweeter
Than Roosevelt pine
The windows broke out
And the cigarette smoke drifted by
The bums on the Bowery
They were swallowed in the lights
As cars rumbled by in the night
Screaming, run for your life
With cool and silvery eyes
And a heart that was fit for desire
Drowned in a river of tears
Oh, a river she cried
Left her with her heart
Made of ashes and fire
And one day there was a silence
And it washed through the town
There was no reason to speak
So no-one made a sound
Her eyes were indigo
And the cats was all calico
And the sailboats, they all sailed by
And a river she cried
With cool and silvery eyes
And a heart that was fit for desire
Drowned in a river of tears
Oh, a river she cried
Left her with her heart
Made of ashes and fire
Ashes and fire
Ashes and fire
Ashes and fire
I'll try to sing a song with Laura, if I may
It's not often we can do something together
I've got one song I'll do now
Ethan had sent me her second record when I was working on my new record
I was living in a cave, more or less, kind of almost for real
That's the first I knew of her music and it knocked me over
>> Can I just ask you to take your watch off?
>> It's so quiet we can hear it
Oh, really? Everybody always tells me to be quiet!
>> It's a great sounding watch
It looks so cool - do you have any prop watches?
I actually threw out the record I was writing and rewrote my record
based on that album because I thought to myself
it's like somebody's actually taking this very seriously
and like, I should probably take this seriously
It was amazing - great motivation
Does my hair look stupid?
>> Rolling!
I went down to Houston
And I stopped in San Antone
I passed up the station for the bus
I was trying to find me something
But I wasn't sure just what
Man, I ended up with pockets full of dust
So I went on to Cleveland and i ended up insane
I bought a borrowed suit and learned to dance
I was spending money the way it likes to rain
But I ended up with pockets full of cane
Oh, my sweet Carolina
What compels me to go
Oh, my sweet disposition
May you one day carry me home
I ain't never been to Vegas
But I've gambled up my life
Building newsprint boats I race to sewer mains
Was trying to find me something
But I wasn't sure just what
Funny how they say
That some things never change
Oh, my sweet Carolina
What compels me to go
Oh, my sweet disposition
May you one day carry me home
Up in the city
It feels like things are closing in
The sunset's just my lightbulb burning out
I miss Kentucky and I miss my family
All the sweetest winds blow across the south
Oh, my sweet Carolina
What compels me to go
Oh, my sweet disposition
May you one day carry me home
May you one day carry me home
>> Apparently, you like comics
Yeah
>> Why has there never been a musician superhero?
There was a musician superhero
There was - her name was Dazzler
and she had the power of disco
She, literally, is one of the coolest Marvel superheroes ever
and she shoots disco sound waves from her hands
and the person who gets hit
by the wave becomes enraptured!
Ooh!
They're like "Oh my god, the mystery of music!"
And she's cute, too
She doesn't exist, by the way
Obviously, I spent a lot of time alone, as a kid!
She doesn't exist, but she's still completely bad ass!
>> Sounds like she needs a Ryan Adams soundtrack album
Maybe! You know, when they're making all these
uh... superhero movies now
make the Dazzler film, I mean
how appropriate is it, really?
Very!
Well I shuffled through the city on the fourth of July
Had a firecracker waiting to blow
Breaking like a rocket who's making its way
To the cities of Mexico
Lived in an apartment out on Avenue A
Had a tar-hut on the corner of 10th
Had myself a lover who was finer than gold
But I've been broken up and busted up since
And love won't play
Any games with me
Anymore like she did before
The world won't wait
So I better shake
That thing right out the door
Hell, I still love you, New York
Well I found myself a picture that would fit in the folds
of my wallet and it stayed pretty good
Still amazed I didn't lose it on the roof of the place
When I was drunk and I was thinking of you
Every day the children they were singing the tunes
Out on the streets and you could hear from inside
I used to take the subway out on Houston and 3rd
Would wait for you and I'd try to hide
But love won't play
Any games with you
Anymore if you don't want it to
The world won't wait
And I watched you shake
But, honey, I'll be thinking of you
Hell, I still love you, New York
I remember Christmas in the blistering cold
On a church on the Upper West Side
Babe I stood there singing you were holding my arm
I was holding your trust like a child
Found a lot of trouble out on Avenue B
But I tried to keep the overhead low
Farewell to the city and the love of my life At least I left before I had to go
And love won't play
Any games with me
Anymore like she did before
The world won't wait
So we better shake
Hell, I'll always be thinking of you
Hell, I still love you, New York
