The golden-winged warbler is a species that recently petitioned to be listed as an endangered
species. What we want to do is territory map, or identify, as many breeding pairs of golden-winged
warblers. We band them with a unique color band, and then our technicians and graduate
students follow these birds throughout the breeding season to delineate its territory.
So it’s a great opportunity for students to see research from the start to the finish
to the final publication, getting and disseminating that information out to the public or other
land managers. Students are certainly going to get ample opportunities to interact in
the research end of things, which is something that is not all that common anymore. A lot
of universities are cutting those kinds of programs. We’re growing as a program at
IUP and we have great interest.
