I WANT TO WELCOME EVERYONE
TO THE OFFICIAL GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY
FOR THE CSULB STUDENT RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER.
MY NAME IS DAVE EDWARDS.
I AM THE ASI ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND DIRECTOR
OF THE UNIVERSITY IN UNION.
IT IS MY PLEASURE TO SERVE AS YOUR MC THIS MORNING.
IT'S EXCITING TO SEE SO MANY FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES
AND SUPPORTERS HERE, AND ESPECIALLY
FOR A GROUND BREAKING WHICH, TO ME, IS ALWAYS A LITTLE ODD
THAT THIS MANY PEOPLE GET EXCITED ABOUT PUTTING A SHOVEL
IN DIRT, BUT WE ALL NEED A LITTLE FUN IN OUR LIVES.
SERIOUSLY, THOUGH, GROUND BREAKING IS A MAJOR MILESTONE
IN THE HISTORY OF OUR CAMPUS.
WE ARE INDEED BREAKING GROUND TODAY.
WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THAT OVER HERE IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
YOU CAN SEE THAT OUR CONTRACTORS HAVE BEAT US TO THE PUNCH
AND THEY'VE ALREADY STARTED CONSTRUCTION,
WHICH IS A GOOD THING FOR US.
THEY GET FINISHED QUICKER; WE GET THE BUILDING OPEN QUICKER.
NOT ONLY ARE WE BREAKING GROUND, BUT WE'RE ALSO BREAKING
DOWN STEREOTYPES ABOUT OUR INSTITUTION
AND WE'RE BREAKING THE MOLD
OF WHAT A TRADITIONAL RECREATION CENTER IS.
FIRST, THIS GROUND BREAKING PROVIDES US FOR THE CONSTRUCTION
OF A $61 MILLION FACILITY, WHICH WILL INCLUDE 126,000 SQUARE FEET
OF RECREATION AND WELLNESS PROGRAMMING.
THIS FACILITY WILL BE OPEN FOR STUDENTS, OF COURSE,
BUT ALSO FOR OUR FACULTY, STAFF AND ALUMNI.
WE HEAR FROM THE FACULTY CONTINGENT THERE,
AND THE ALUMS, AND SOME STAFF MAYBE?
YEAH. SOME HAVE ASKED RECENTLY WHY A RECREATION CENTER
ON OUR CAMPUS.
MY OPINION, THE NEED
FOR A RECREATION CENTER IS NEVER MORE CRITICAL THAN IT IS TODAY.
ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL,
CHILDHOOD OBESITY AND DIABETES IS AT EPIDEMIC LEVELS RIGHT NOW.
IN THE MID-'80S, CHILDHOOD OBESITY WAS ABOUT FOUR PERCENT.
TODAY, IT'S AT 20 PERCENT.
FOR THE FIRST TIME -- THIS IS THE STAT
THAT REALLY STARTLED ME.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY,
OUR CHILDREN HAVE SHORTER EXPECTED LIFE SPANS
THAN WE DO AS PARENTS.
THAT'S VERY CONCERNING.
SO NO MORE THAN TODAY IS THERE A GREATER NEED
FOR A FACILITY LIKE THIS.
AS EDUCATORS, WE MUST STRENGTHEN OUR FOCUS AND OUR ATTENTION
ON THIS CRITICAL SOCIETAL PROBLEM.
THIS FACILITY WILL GO A LONG WAY IN DOING THAT.
SO WHAT WILL BE INCLUDED IN THIS CUTTING-EDGE FACILITY?
IT WILL INCLUDE MANY BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL AND BADMINTON COURTS.
YES, BADMINTON IS VERY POPULAR ON THIS CAMPUS,
UNIQUELY SO BUT VERY POPULAR.
IT WILL INCLUDE A ROCK CLIMBING WALL, A HEALTH
AND NUTRITION CENTER, RECREATION AND LAP SWIMMING POOL,
INDOOR SOCCER FIELD, LARGE WEIGHT AND CARDIO AREA,
ONE OF THE LARGEST IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE,
INCLUDING, AND THIS IS AN ITEM
THAT REALLY EXCITES OUR STUDENT POPULATION,
AND VICE PRESIDENT DOUG ROBINSON, A 25-PERSON HOT TUB.
YOU CAN ASK DOUG LATER WHY.
I ALWAYS LOVE TO PICK ON DOUG.
SECOND, WE'RE BREAKING DOWN STEREOTYPES, AS I MENTIONED,
ABOUT OUR INSTITUTION.
IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING FITNESS ACTIVITIES, STUDENT REC
AND WELLNESS CENTERS AROUND THE NATION HAVE BECOME THE NEW
COLLEGE UNIONS.
THEY'VE BECOME A NEW PLACE TO SOCIALIZE AND TO GATHER,
NOT JUST FOR STUDENTS TO GATHER WITH STUDENTS, BUT STUDENTS
TO GATHER WITH FACULTY OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM WHICH,
AS WE ALL KNOW, IS CRITICAL TO THEIR SUCCESS.
LONG CONSIDERED A COMMUTER SCHOOL,
CSULB'S REPUTATION WILL SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGE
WITH THE OPENING OF THIS FACILITY.
I WILL PROMISE YOU THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL FEEL A STRONGER
SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION
AS A RESULT OF THIS FACILITY.
IT WILL FOREVER CHANGE CAMPUS LIFE.
FINALLY, WE'RE BREAKING THE MOLD
OF THE TRADITIONAL RECREATION CENTER DESIGNED
BY OUR AWARD-WINNING [INAUDIBLE] DESIGN TEAM,
WHICH YOU'LL BE INTRODUCED TO IN A FEW MINUTES.
THE STUDENT REC AND WELLNESS CENTER WILL BE A STREAMLINED,
EFFICIENT FACILITY WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT.
MOST EXCITINGLY, THE STUDENT REC
AND WELLNESS CENTER WILL JOIN OUR NEW SCIENCE BUILDING
CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AS ONLY ONE
OF TWO LEED SILVER CERTIFIED FACILITIES ON OUR CAMPUS.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, LEED SILVER IS A DESIGNATION
FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONSERVATION EFFORTS
IN DESIGN AND IN OPERATION.
ADDITIONALLY, AND THIS IS SORT OF THE FEATHER IN OUR HAT,
IT WILL BE THE FIRST REC CENTER IN THE CSU TO BE LEED SILVER.
SOME OF THE EXCITING ELEMENTS AROUND THE LEED SILVER ASPECTS
OF THIS BUILDING INCLUDE THE GROUND BREAKING ITSELF.
THE VERY ASPHALT THAT USED TO BE BENEATH OUR FEET HERE,
WHICH WAS A PARKING LOT, HAS BEEN PULVERIZED AND WILL BE USED
IN THE FOUNDATION FOR THE BUILDING.
WE'LL BE USING RECLAIMED WATER FOR IRRIGATION,
WATERLESS URINALS, ADJUSTABLE LIGHTS THAT BRIGHTEN
AS THE DAY GETS DARKER, RECYCLED LUMBER
AND NEW TECHNOLOGY INCLUDING BIOMETRIC READERS,
WHICH ARE PALM READERS
THAT ALLOW YOU ACCESS TO THE FACILITY.
ALL OF THESE ARE TO DECREASE COSTS AND SAVE ENERGY.
SO WE'RE BREAKING GROUND, WE'RE BREAKING STEREOTYPES
AND WE'RE BREAKING THE TRADITIONAL MOLD.
THIS CSULB STUDENT REC
AND WELLNESS CENTER WILL TRULY BE A GREAT ADDITION
TO THIS ALREADY GREAT CAMPUS.
>> [LAUGHING] THREE YEARS AGO, THIS DIDN'T LOOK
LIKE WE COULD EVEN GET IT DONE.
EVEN IN THIS CURRENT ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, WHETHER IT'S
AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL OR THE STATE LEVEL,
KEEPING THIS PROJECT MOVING SO THAT WE HAVE A GROUND BREAKING
AND THAT THIS PROJECT MOVES FORWARD AND STAYS
ON ITS TIMELINE HAS BEEN LIKE PUSHING A WHEELBARROW FULL
OF BULLFROGS, QUITE HONESTLY.
EVERYBODY HAS PLAYED THEIR ROLE IN THIS
AND THEY HAVE DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB.
I AM ONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN ATTEST TO THE BENEFITS
OF A FACILITY LIKE THIS.
PRIOR TO COMING TO OUR CAMPUS, I WAS PRESIDENT
OF MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY WHERE WE BUILT A FACILITY LIKE THIS.
I'VE SEEN WHAT IT DOES FOR A CAMPUS.
WHAT IT DID FOR THIS CAMPUS, WHAT IT DID FOR MURRAY STATE,
ALL OF A SUDDEN, A CAMPUS WHERE OUR STUDENTS LEFT
ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND DID NOT COME BACK TILL MONDAY MORNING,
THEY WERE STAYING ON THE WEEKENDS,
WHICH ALSO MEANT THEY NOT ONLY STAYED ON THE WEEKENDS
TO USE THE RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER, BUT THEY STAYED
AND USED THE DINING HALLS.
THEY STAYED AND MADE FRIENDSHIPS.
THESE TYPES OF FACILITIES SPILL OVER INTO THE LIBRARY,
SPILL OVER INTO THE STUDENT UNION.
ON A CAMPUS WHERE WE'RE A LITTLE TOO QUIET ON THE WEEKENDS,
WE NEED TO DO MORE FOR OUR STUDENTS
TO CREATE A SEVEN-DAY-A-WEEK UNIVERSITY, A SEVEN-DAY-A-WEEK,
24-HOUR-A-DAY UNIVERSITY THAT CATERS
TO THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS.
EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS ARE FULLTIME STUDENTS.
WE ARE NOT AS COMMUTER AS WE THINK WE ARE
OR AS OUR STEREOTYPE TELLS MANY.
WE THEREFORE NEED TO CREATE THE TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT
WHICH INCLUDES THIS FACILITY.
THIS FACILITY HELPS US HELP OUR STUDENTS DO MORE THINGS
ON THIS CAMPUS TO BUILD FRIENDSHIPS.
I'LL SHARE WITH YOU SOME OTHER THOUGHTS THAT I HAVE ABOUT THAT.
I DO WANT TO START, TO MENTION THAT I RECEIVED AN EMAIL
FROM ONE OF OUR GRADUATES YESTERDAY
WHO HAD BEEN CONTACTED ABOUT, FOUND OUT ABOUT THE FACILITY.
SHE WAS A SENIOR NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO.
SHE SAID AS A SENIOR, SHE TOOK AN AEROBICS CLASS
AND A JAZZERCISE CLASS,
ONE OF THE FIRST ONES EVER OFFERED ON OUR CAMPUS.
SHE SAID, "YOU KNOW, I LIKE THESE CLASSES.
I COULD DO THIS.
I COULD DO THIS."
THIS IS HER MESSAGE: "DEAR PRESIDENT ALEXANDER, FACULTY
AND STUDENTS, I AM SO EXCITED FOR MY ALMA MATER
TO BE BREAKING GROUND
ON AN AMAZING HEALTH AND FITNESS FACILITY.
HOW AWESOME IS IT TO BE TO BE ABLE TO WORKOUT RIGHT THERE
ON CAMPUS IN A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY.
I'M A GREAT BELIEVER THAT EXERCISE GIVES YOU ENERGY
AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE AN IMPORTANT PART
OF EVERYBODY'S LIFE.
CONGRATULATIONS TO CAL STATE LONG BEACH
AND I'LL BE THERE AS SOON AS IT OPENS.
BEST ALWAYS, DENISE AUSTIN."
DENISE LIVES IN WASHINGTON, DC AND SAID SHE WILL JOIN US
WHEN WE CUT THE RIBBON ON OUR NEW FACILITY.
I'D SAY SHE'S DONE ALRIGHT WITH JAZZERCISE
AND AEROBICS EVER SINCE.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS IS AN IMPORTANT PART
OF EVERYBODY'S EDUCATION.
SOMETIMES OUR STUDENTS DON'T REALIZE
THAT UNTIL THEY LIVE A LITTLE WHILE AND GET OLDER.
ALL OF US AS WE GET OLDER UNDERSTAND IT DOESN'T MATTER
WHAT WE'RE LEARNING, OUR HEALTH BECOMES ONE
OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT WE DEAL WITH.
DAVE APPROPRIATELY MENTIONED SOME OF THE ISSUES
THAT WE'RE DEALING WITH.
THIS IS NOT JUST A STUDENT AFFAIRS
OR STUDENT SERVICES ISSUE FOR OUR CAMPUS,
IT'S AN ECONOMIC ISSUE FOR THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA
AND IT'S AN ECONOMIC ISSUE FOR OUR NATION.
HAVING BEEN IN A STATE THAT RANKED AMONG THE LOWEST
IN HEALTH AND EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL FITNESS,
THE COSTS THAT ACCRUE TO A SOCIETY OF HAVING A SOCIETY
THAT DOESN'T TAKE HEALTH SERIOUSLY WILL PUT ALL SCHOOL
SYSTEMS UNDER, WILL PUT ALL UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS
UNDER IF WE DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THESE ISSUES.
THE UNITED STATES, ACCORDING
TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION NOW RANKS 37TH IN THE WORLD
IN WORLD HEALTH, AND THAT INCLUDES EXERCISE,
BELOW COSTA RICA, MOROCCO AND CHILE.
OUR LIFE EXPECTANCY RATE AS A NATION HAS DROPPED TO 28TH
IN THE WORLD, BELOW MALTA, ANDORRA, GREECE AND ITALY.
THESE ARE ECONOMIC ISSUES FOR CALIFORNIA
AND THEY'RE ECONOMIC ISSUES FOR OUR NATION,
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY'RE IMPORTANT ISSUES
FOR OUR STUDENTS TO DEVELOP.
WE HAD A COFFEE GATHERING ONE NIGHT ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO.
ONE OF THE STUDENTS SAID, "WHY ARE WE WASTING OUR MONEY
ON A NEW STUDENT RECREATION
AND WELLNESS CENTER I WILL NEVER USE?"
WELL, WE HOPE THAT PERHAPS SHE WILL USE IT.
IT IS THAT KIND OF ATTITUDE THAT WOULD HAVE LED US
TO NEVER BUILD A STUDENT UNION AS A UNIVERSITY
FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF STUDENTS.
IT IS THAT KIND OF ATTITUDE THAT WOULD HAVE NEVER LED
TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS FACILITY
THAT WILL BENEFIT THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS EVERY DAY,
WEEK, MONTH AND YEAR FROM NOW ON.
IT IS THAT KIND OF STUDENT
THAT WE HOPE WE CAN CHANGE HER MIND BEFORE SHE GRADUATES
BECAUSE WE HAVE TOO MANY NAYSAYERS IN SOCIETY
WHO BELIEVE THE SAME THING.
WHY SHOULD I GIVE TO YOU IF I'M NOT BENEFITING DIRECTLY FROM IT?
INDIRECTLY, EVERYBODY WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS FACILITY.
WE'LL HAVE A HEALTHIER LONG BEACH,
A HEALTHIER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
AND OUR GRADUATES WILL HAVE HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES,
THEIR FAMILIES WILL BE HEALTHIER AND THEY WILL HAVE CHILDREN
THAT WILL HAVE HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES.
THIS IS A MUCH BIGGER ISSUE THAN THE DIRECT BENEFIT
THAT OUR STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF MAY GAIN
FROM THIS TYPE OF FACILITY.
IT'S NOT SIMPLY A PLACE FOR EXERCISE.
THIS WILL BE A PLACE THAT WILL BUILD LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS
AND NETWORKS AMONG OUR STUDENTS
FROM HERE THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THEIR LIFE.
IT WILL BE A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS, FACULTY
AND STAFF WILL BE ABLE TO EXCHANGE IDEAS
AND HELP ONE ANOTHER GROW AND LEARN TOGETHER.
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH OF THOSE FACILITIES ON OUR CAMPUS.
WHAT WE SEE IS GENERALLY THERE ARE THREE MAJOR FACILITIES
WHERE FACULTY WILL COME OUT OF THEIR DEPARTMENTS,
OUT OF THEIR OFFICES, STUDENTS WILL COME
OUT OF THEIR RESIDENCE HALLS AND THEIR APARTMENTS.
THEY WILL GATHER AND THEY WILL EXCHANGE FRIENDSHIPS,
THEY WILL EXCHANGE IDEAS,
THEY WILL HELP EACH OTHER IN THEIR CAREERS.
THOSE FACILITIES WHERE WE CONGREGATE AND DO
THAT TODAY ARE STUDENT UNIONS, LIBRARIES
AND STUDENT RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTERS.
NOWHERE ELSE ON OUR CAMPUS WILL WE HAVE THE STUDENT FLOW
OR THE INTERACTION THAT YOU WILL SEE WHEN THESE DOORS OPEN.
THIS WILL ALSO BE A PLACE WHERE OUR GRADUATES WILL THINK FONDLY
OF THEIR MEMORIES OF THIS UNIVERSITY.
THEY'LL THINK FONDLY OF THE COMPETITIONS
AND THE FRIENDSHIPS THAT THEY MADE HERE.
I CAN ATTEST BY PLAYING PICKUP BASKETBALL WITH OUR STUDENTS
THAT QUITE OFTEN, I LEARN MORE ABOUT CAMPUS
WHEN I'M SWEATING PLAYING PICKUP BASKETBALL WITH OUR STUDENTS
THAN I EVER LEARN ABOUT CAMPUS IN MY OFFICE.
IT IS A UNIVERSITY FACILITY THAT WILL BENEFIT ALL ON THIS CAMPUS.
THAT'S WHY IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT HEALTH
AND WELLNESS AND EXERCISE IS INDEED AN IMPORTANT PART
OF EDUCATION.
IT'S AN IMPORTANT PART OF LEARNING.
MY MOTHER WAS A PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER
AND SHE'D KILL ME IF I DIDN'T SAY THAT.
I BELIEVE IT AS WELL.
WE ALL BELIEVE IT AS A UNIVERSITY;
WE ALL BELIEVE IT AS A SOCIETY.
MANY OF YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR NCAA SPORTS.
OVER 366 OF OUR STUDENT ATHLETES COMPETE
AGAINST THE BEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY.
RITA IS BACK THERE.
RITA ORCHESTRATES OVER 1,000 STUDENTS PLAYING IN CLUB SPORTS.
WE NOT ONLY HAVE BADMINTON AND SPORTS THAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW
ABOUT THAT THIS FACILITY WILL ALSO AIDE TO,
BUT ON THESE PLAYING FIELDS ON THE WEEKENDS,
YOU'LL SEE CRICKET, RUGBY, ALL KINDS OF SPORTS
THAT YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW WE HAD CLUBS FOR.
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE.
SOMEONE ONCE SAID, "I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE A UNIVERSITY FULL
OF 38,000 STUDENTS ALL DOING SOMETHING
THAN HAVE A UNIVERSITY FULL
OF 38,000 STUDENTS WATCHING A FEW DO SOMETHING."
THAT'S THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS BUILDING;
THAT'S THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS FACILITY.
IT'S GOING TO BE PERHAPS THE BIGGEST ADDITION TO THIS CAMPUS.
YOU CAN MEASURE IT BY ONE WAY ONLY.
MEASURE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE
THAT WILL USE IT EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I'VE SEEN WHAT IT DOES FOR A CAMPUS.
I HAVE SEEN WHAT ENDS UP HAPPENING AT MIDNIGHT
WHEN WE HAVE TO CLOSE.
THREE TO FOUR HUNDRED STUDENTS
WHEN WE CLOSE, IT DOESN'T MATTER.
STUDENTS STAY UP ALL NIGHT ANYWAY.
BUT 300 TO 400 STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO CLOSE THE FACILITY,
WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE AT 1 A.M. THAT SHOWS YOU THE IMPACT
OF WHAT THIS BUILDING WILL DO
FOR OUR CAMPUS, FOR OUR UNIVERSITY.
IT'S ABOUT TIME.
THE LAST TIME WE BUILT A FACILITY
LIKE THIS WAS 40 YEARS AGO WHEN THE STUDENTS MADE THE SAME TYPE
OF DECISION THAT WILL BENEFIT THE STUDENTS OF THE FUTURE
AND GENERATIONS OF STUDENTS FOR DECADES AND DECADES TO COME.
THIS IS A GREAT DAY FOR OUR UNIVERSITY.
IN MANY WAYS, IT'S OUR OWN LITTLE ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE
THAT WE'RE PUTTING INTO THE LONG BEACH COMMUNITY.
AT LEAST WE CAN KEEP MOVING SOME OF THE PROGRESS FORWARD.
WE'RE GOING TO WORK ON OUR SCIENCE BUILDING NEXT.
THAT'S A STATE-FUNDED PROJECT, AS YOU KNOW.
WITH THE RAINS COMING, IT MAY BECOME A BIG FISHING HOLE
FOR A LITTLE WHILE, BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET
THAT PROJECT MOVING AGAIN.
ALL OF THESE FACILITIES, PARTICULARLY THIS FACILITY,
MEASURE ITS IMPACT FROM THE FIRST DAY IT OPENS.
WATCH THE TRAFFIC FLOW OF STUDENTS;
WATCH THE TRAFFIC FLOW OF FACULTY AND STAFF.
THE 49ERS SENT TWO REPORTERS TO ME WHEN I FIRST WAS SELECTED
TO BECOME PRESIDENT OF THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY.
THEY CAME IN AND THEY WERE AGAINST THIS IDEA
WHEN THEY CAME TO MURRAY STATE.
I TOOK THEM OVER TO OUR FACILITY AT MURRAY STATE,
THE ONE WE HAD BUILT,
AND I SHOWED THEM WHAT IT MEANT TO THE UNIVERSITY.
I SHOWED THEM ONE SCENE WHERE WE HAD THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS
WHEN THEY WALKED IN, GOING IN AND OUT OF THE FACILITY.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, THERE WAS A WEIGHT MACHINE
WHERE OUR VICE PRESIDENT WAS USING,
A GRADUATE STUDENT WAS TALKING,
AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT WAS TALKING
AND A FACULTY MEMBER WERE ALL STANDING
AROUND THAT MACHINE SHARING IDEAS, SHARING EXPERIENCES,
AND MOST LIKELY BUILDING THE COLLEGIATE EXPERIENCE
FOR EACH ONE OF THOSE STUDENTS.
THAT'S WHAT THIS BUILDING IS GOING TO DO FOR OUR STUDENTS.
IT WILL BRING US TOGETHER IN WAYS
THAT ONLY TWO OTHER FACILITIES THAT WE HAVE
ON OUR CAMPUS BRING OUR STUDENTS,
FACULTY AND STAFF TOGETHER.
WITH ALUMNI JOINING IN, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE NETWORKING
THAT THE ALUMNI CAN PROVIDE FOR OUR STUDENTS,
THE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ALL THE OTHER EXPERIENCES THIS TYPE
OF SHARING FACILITY WILL GIVE TO THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY.
THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN.
THIS INVOLVED HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE.
I WANT TO THANK OUR STUDENT BODY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE GREATNESS
AND THE FORESIGHT, HAVING THE FORESIGHT
TO TELL THE GENERATIONS TO COME THAT WE WANT YOU
TO HAVE EVEN A STRONGER COLLEGIATE
EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.
THAT'S WHAT THIS UNIVERSITY FACILITY WILL PROVIDE
FROM THE FIRST DAY IT OPENS.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORK AND GO BEACH.
>> [CLAPPING] THE STUDENT RECREATION
AND WELLNESS CENTER WILL BE A STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDING
AND WILL BE A PLACE, AS WE'VE HEARD, FOR STUDENTS TO WORKOUT,
RELAX, EAT HEALTHY FOOD AND SOCIALIZE
WITH FACULTY, STAFF AND ALUMNI.
DAVE MENTIONED SOME OF THE EXCITING THINGS
THAT WILL BE OFFERED IN THE RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER,
INCLUDING BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL, BADMINTON,
SAND VOLLEYBALL, INDOOR SOCCER, ROCK CLIMBING
AND EVEN SURF BOARD AND BOOGIE BOARD RENTALS,
WHICH STUDENTS ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT.
ALSO, IMPORTANTLY, THIS STUDENT RECREATION
AND WELLNESS CENTER WILL PROVIDE 200 TO 300 JOBS FOR STUDENTS
ON CAMPUS, WHICH IS SO IMPORTANT IN THIS ENVIRONMENT.
IT'S NO WONDER THAT THE CENTER WAS APPROVED
BY NEARLY THREE FOURTHS OF THE STUDENTS WHO VOTED
FOR THE REFERENDUM IN THE SPRING OF 2006.
AS A STUDENT AND GRADUATING CENTER, THIS RECREATION
AND WELLNESS CENTER IS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL TO ME.
I KNOW, AS AN ALUMNI, I WILL BE ABLE TO COME BACK TO CAMPUS
AND BE JUST AS ACTIVE AND ENGAGED AS EVER.
I LOOK FORWARD TO 20 YEARS FROM NOW COMING BACK
TO THIS VERY SPOT ONCE MORE AND SHARING STORIES WITH MY FAMILY
AND FRIENDS ABOUT TODAY WHEN WE WERE ALL HERE TOGETHER
AT THIS GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN FASCINATED
AT WATCHING A BUILDING TAKE SHAPE FROM THE FLOOR UP?
I KNOW I'VE NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT.
THAT'S WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT THAT WE TAKE THE TIME
TO THANK SOME INCREDIBLE, EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE,
INDIVIDUALS OF VISION, PERSEVERANCE
AND INCREDIBLE WORK ETHIC.
I WOULD LIKE TO PERSONALLY THANK ROB LOWRY [ASSUMED SPELLING],
MEREDITH CHASE [ASSUMED SPELLING], [INAUDIBLE],
SCOTT KRISTOFFERSON SHORN [ASSUMED SPELLING] FOR BEING
SUCH ROLE MODELS AND WORKING SO HARD
TO CARRYOUT THE PROJECTS WHILE BEING SO GRACIOUS
WITH EVERYONE THEY ARE AROUND.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK PRESIDENT ALEXANDER
FOR HIS SUPPORTING ROLE
IN PUSHING THE CENTER TO MAKE IT A REALITY.
THE CENTER BEGAN AS A VISION OF THE STUDENTS.
AT THIS TIME, IT'S AN HONOR FOR ME TO THANK CURRENT
AND PRIOR STUDENTS
WHO COMMUNICATED THEIR VISION TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
THEY ARE INTEGRAL TEAM MEMBERS IN THE PLANNING
AND DESIGN STAGES OF THE CENTER.
THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US TODAY.
PART OF THE ASI MISSION STATEMENT IS
TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF CAMPUS LIFE FOR STUDENTS.
THE TWO PEOPLE WHO DO THAT BEST ARE DAVE EDWARDS
AND RICHARD HAWLER [ASSUMED SPELLING].
DAVE, WE'D LIKE TO HONOR YOU TODAY
FOR SHOWING EXTRAORDINARY COMMITMENT AND PASSION
FOR WHAT YOU DO BY EMPOWERING AND GUIDING YOUR TEAM.
RICHARD, THIS REC AND WELLNESS CENTER WOULD NOT BE HERE
WITHOUT HIS LEADERSHIP.
I MUST SAY, I'VE WORKED WITH HIM VERY CLOSELY THE LAST SEVERAL
MONTHS AND RICHARD LEADS WITH INTEGRITY AND HONOR
AND CONSIDERS ETHICS IN EVERY DECISION I HAVE EVER SEEN
HIM MAKE.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN HONORING THESE INDIVIDUALS FOR BRINGING THE REC
AND WELLNESS CENTER TO OUR CAMPUS.
SO HERE'S TO THE FUTURE REC AND WELLNESS CENTER.
MAY IT ALWAYS BE A SAFE PLACE FOR US TO CONGREGATE
IN COMMUNITY WITH ONE ANOTHER AS WE STRENGTHEN
AND EQUIP OURSELVES TO BETTER SERVE EACH OTHER, OUR COMMUNITY
AND THE REST OF THOSE WE ENCOUNTER
AS WE GO OUT INTO THE WORLD.
ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENT BODY OF CAL STATE LONG BEACH,
I THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS IN BRINGING THE REC
AND WELLNESS CENTER TO OUR BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS.
ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR AFTERNOON WITH US TODAY AND GO BEACH.
[ BACKGROUND TALKING ]
