My name is Laura Brown I’m currently in my first year of university studying Biomedical
Sciences
part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the University of Sunderland.
The reason I choose Sunderland is because it's actually one of the best universities
for Biomedical Sciences.
It all very well learning science out of the text book
but to be a real scientist you have to go into the lab and learn how to do real practical
science, and I think that's really where our strength lies
and what we deliver to our students the best.
So we have actually developed a Sciences Complex to a very high level to develop labs which
will allow us to increase the level of knowledge we can give to the student. And also allow
us to use brand new techniques to illustrate those theoretical concepts to the students.
There's absolutely loads of labs in this university and they are situated all over the Science
Complex and vary totally in size and are specific for the subject you are studying.
We don’t reserve things for researchers, we don’t reserve things for academics, we
don’t place things off limits to undergraduate students.
We will allow you firsthand experience, practical experience of all of the equipment we have
here in our new facility we think that's a very important message to get across.
You are practising the techniques that you would be going to do in a working environment
so people from other universities they don’t get the chance to do that so going for a job
you have got the better experience.
We have a new programme coming on stream soon called Physiological Sciences and this is
a new exciting programme which we've developed in conjunction with the Department of Health
and it allows students to think about what they want to do next.
We look after our students, we care about our students and we want them to succeed.
So you get to know everyone really well and you get to know your tutors much better
and they're always there to help and support you
during the lab as well as when you have assignments they're more than willing for you come and
see them and speak to them.
And with the informal learning atmosphere they can contextualise and understand without
having any kind of intimidation with just popping in to see a lecturer now and again.
It’s definitely a good university to come to and it’s just a really good experience.
