What Family Means to Me

To me, family means… A mom who is a nurse, who loves spending time with her children,
and who loves reading a good book. A dad who is a program manager, who loves spending time
doing yard work and working in the garden, and who is a great cook. An older brother
who is a senior at Washington and Lee University, who plays football and loves spending time
with friends, and who always has been and always will be there for me. A dog who loves
snuggling up on the couch, who goes for walks around my neighborhood in New Jersey, and
who loves being the third child in our family. To me, family means… Thanksgiving with the
whole family together – aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Spending special time with
my brother, telling stories and catching up on life. Cooking and baking with mom and dad
in the kitchen, and then gathering around the dining room table to indulge in mounds
of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Being together and giving thanks
for the opportunity to spend time with family and enjoy a fulfilling home-cooked meal. To
me, family means… Finding joy in the little things during the Christmas season, like sitting
on Santa’s lap with my brother when we were kids. Spending time with my parents and reminiscing
about Christmases past – the gifts we got, the places we went, and the time we spent
together. Cuddling up on the couch and watching the fire as it warms you after a morning out
in the snow. Decorating the Christmas tree together with lights, ornaments, and more
as “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman” bring the house to
life. Gathering around the Christmas tree on Christmas morning to open presents, my
brother and I anxiously shaking boxes and peeking in bags to see what’s inside. Going
to church with my family and then eating dinner together, rejoicing in the time that we have
to share together during the holiday season. To me, family means… Trips to the Jersey
shore in the summer with my cousins, building sandcastles and going swimming in the ocean,
and eating Italian ices on the boardwalk after a long, hot day in the sun. Trips abroad to
Scotland and Ireland to visit my brother and explore the world, visiting landmarks like
St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College in Dublin. Trips to Florida every spring to
visit my grandparents, MomMom and PopPop, have fun and make silly faces with my cousins,
and be entertained poolside by my energetic, sun-loving dad. Trips to California to spend
time with my aunt and uncle and visit historical places and beautiful landscapes, like Alcatraz
Island, the Yuba River, and Golden Gate Bridge. To me, family means… Celebrating special
events like high school graduation and having my entire family there to support me and cheer
me on. To me, family means… Watching my brother play football on a Saturday afternoon
and being there to cheer him on. Enjoying sitting in the stands with my mom and dad,
and then celebrating together at the end of the game. To me, family means… Love, faith,
compassion, good times, laughter, hope, friendship, traditions, holidays, and vacations. To me,
family means… HOME.
