AND NOW IT'S MY GREAT PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE MY FRIEND,
MR. GREG POLLOCK, WHO RECENTLY COMPLETED HIS SECOND TERM AS
PRESIDENT OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT AND IS GRADUATING
THIS WEEKEND WITH A BS IN PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL
COMMUNICATION FROM THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS.
GREG HAS BEEN A REAL SPARK OF ENERGY AND HE HAS WORKED
TIRELESSLY TO BUILD STUDENT SPIRIT AND PRIDE IN RIT AND TO
ENSURE THAT STUDENT VOICES ARE HEARD AT ALL LEVELS OF THE
UNIVERSITY.
WE THANK HIM FOR HIS WORK AND WISH HIM WELL IN THE FUTURE!
GREG.
(APPLAUSE)

>> GREG POLLOCK: GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!
AT MY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION FIVE YEARS AGO, MY FATHER SAID
TO ME "MY DREAM WAS TO GIVE YOU ROOTS AND WINGS, NOW USE THEM
TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS." AND I DID
I CHASED THEM THE WHOLE WORLD OVER FROM THE SHORES OF
ITALY, THROUGH THE WILDERNESS OF KENYA.
I CHASED THEM UNTIL I FINALLY CAME TO REST ON THIS STAGE
BUT I STILL CAN'T SEEM TO SEIZE THEM.
AND HONESTLY, I'M GETTING A LITTLE TIRED.
I OFTEN ASK MYSELF, "WHEN DOES IT END?"
WHEN CAN WE FINALLY SETTLE DOWN AND SAY "I'M DONE"?
THEN THERE'S THIS VOICE IN MY HEAD THAT SAYS, "NOT YET...
LOOK WHERE YOU ARE."
THEN I KNOW WHERE I AM, RIGHT HERE, WHERE IT ALL STARTED FIVE
YEARS AGO. AND THAT'S WHEN IT DAWNED ON
ME, IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO END. IT'S LIKE THOSE TRICK BIRTHDAY
CANDLES, AND THEY MAKE ME SO MUCH HAPPIER THAN THE REAL ONES
BECAUSE THEY JUST DON'T GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT, AND IT FILLS
THE ROOM WITH LAUGHTER. EVEN WHEN YOU BLOW THEM OUT,
YOU'RE NOT DONE.
MY FELLOW STUDENTS, IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY, THEN DON'T BE
FOOLED BY THIS MOMENT.
WE ASKED YOU TO DREAM BIG WHILE YOU WERE HERE, AND YOU DID!
BUT YOUR BIGGEST DREAMS ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU WAITING
FOR YOU TO TIGHTEN YOUR LACES AND START THE RACE ALL OVER
AGAIN. THIS TIME, FASTER THAN EVER.
YOU SEE, REAL DREAMS WILL NEVER ALLOW YOU THE LUXURY OF
CATCHING YOUR BREATH.
THE BAR FOR DREAMING GOES HIGHER AND HIGHER UNTIL THE DAY
IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO PASS THEM ON,
JUST AS MY PARENTS DID WITH ME.
THE WORLD IS TURNING, TIMES ARE CHANGING, AND YOU CAN KEEP UP
OR GET LEFT BEHIND.
OUR DREAMS WAIT FOR NO ONE.
YOU CAN SEIZE THEM, OR YOU CAN3 ALLOW THE DOUBTERS TO STOP
YOU.
YOU DECIDE. BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU WHAT I'VE SEEN OVER THE
LAST FIVE YEARS IS THAT WE ARE DOERS.
I SAW A TEAM OF STUDENTS SHATTER THE DODGEBALL WORLD
RECORD -- (CHEERS) -- AND OUR WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM WON THE
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
THE RECENTLY FORMED RIT PIPE BAND IS ALREADY PERFORMING AT
RIT'S COMMENCEMENT, AND ONE STUDENT, JULIAN MOIWAI,
WILL REPRESENT THE UNITED STATES AT THE DEAF WORLD
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ANKARA, TURKEY.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) OR YOU COULD BE AN INCREDIBLE
STUDENT GOVERNMENT VICE PRESIDENT, LIKE PHIL AMSLER.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

THESE ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO DID NOT
ALLOW THE DOUBTERS TO STOP THEM.
IN FACT, 2 YEARS AGO OUR DOUBTERS WERE SO BUSY ASKING
"WHO ARE THESE GUYS ANYWAYS?" THAT THEY ALMOST MISSED US
SKATING RIGHT BY ON OUR WAY TO THE FROZEN FOUR.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
THINK BACK, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH YOURSELF THESE PAST FEW
YEARS, WERE YOU DOERS OR DOUBTERS?
DID YOU BUILD SOMEONE UP OR BREAK THEM DOWN?
DID YOU SPEND YOUR TIME DOUBTING SOMEONE ELSE'S DREAM
OR DID YOU SPEND YOUR TIME DEVELOPING YOUR OWN?
EVERY DAY YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO MAKE. YOU CAN EITHER HELP YOUR
FRIENDS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS, OR BREAK THEM DOWN.
CHOOSE WISELY. THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO TOLD ME
THAT THIS WAS IMPOSSIBLE.
AND THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE NOT HERE RIGHT NOW.
MY BELIEF IS THERE ARE NO DOUBTERS HERE TODAY.
YOU AND I DID NOT GET THIS FAR BY BEING DOUBTERS, OR BY
PAYING ATTENTION TO THEM.
DOUBTERS ARE PEOPLE WHO CAUSE YOU TO BE SATISFIED WITH BEING
MEDIOCRE AS OPPOSED TO BECOMING A DEVELOPER OF DREAMS FOR
YOURSELF AND FOR OTHERS.
SO AS YOU LEAVE, ALL SET TO DREAM BIGGER, DON'T LET THE
DOUBTERS CATCH UP TO YOU.
EVERY SECOND YOU HESITATE ON THEM IS ONE MORE DREAM MISSED.
IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD, INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON
ANY DOUBTERS, I ASK YOU TO TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO SOMEONE
WHO INSPIRED ME, THE HONORABLE BARBARA JORDAN WHO SAID
"MY CHARGE TO YOU IS VERY SIMPLE.
BE THE HIGHEST, THE BEST, THE MORE THAN MORE, THE EXCELLENT.
KEEP PUSHING, BECAUSE THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DEMAND FOR
MEDIOCRITY."
WE ARE ALL READY TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT WE ARE THE BEST AT
WHAT WE DO.
THE WORLD'S EYES ARE UPON US.
RIT DID NOT PREPARE US FOR MEDIOCRITY, AND CLEARLY OUR
CONTRIBUTIONS HERE AT RIT HAVE NOT BEEN MEDIOCRE.
RIT HAS SHOWN US THAT WE CANNOT FIT IN WHEN WE WERE MEANT TO
STAND OUT.
EACH OF US IS LEAVING HERE WITH OUR DEGREE, OUR BIGGER DREAM,
AND THE BENEFIT OF OUR EXPANDED IMAGINATION.
YOU DEFINE YOUR LEGACY, NOT YOUR DOUBTERS.
WALK ACROSS THIS STAGE WITH PRIDE.

I JOIN THE MANY WHO WISH YOU
THE BEST OF LUCK, AND THANK YOU

FOR AN OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE.

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) THANK YOU.
AS YOU LEAVE HERE AFTER GRADUATION, YOUR RELATIONSHIP
WITH RIT DOES NOT END. YOU MERELY STOP BEING ALUMNI IN
TRAINING.
WITH US THIS AFTERNOON IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE RIT ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION AND A MEMBER OF OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES, MS.
KATHLEEN ANDERSON.
(APPLAUSE)

>> KATHLEEN ANDERSON: MERRIAM-WEBSTER DEFINES AN
ALUMNA/ALUMNUS AS EITHER A PERSON WHO HAS
GRADUATED FROM A PARTICULAR COLLEGE OR
UNIVERSITY OR A FORMER MEMBER,
CONTRIBUTOR, OR INMATE.

(LAUGHTER) IT IS MY HOPE THAT YOU, AS RIT
ALUMNI, EMBODY THE FIRST DEFINITION RATHER THAN THE
SECOND. CLASS OF 2012, YOU ARE ABOUT TO
JOIN THE RANKS OF A VERY SPECIAL FAMILY. THE RIT ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION. THROUGH YOUR CONNECTION TO THE RIT ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION, YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH RIT WILL LAST A LIFETIME.

IT WILL BE WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO AND DRAW YOU BACK TO
YOUR RIT FAMILY THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
WHILE YOUR ALMA MATER IS HERE EVERY DAY PROVIDING YOU MANY
BENEFITS AND SERVICES RANGING FROM REGIONAL PROGRAMMING TO
REUNIONS TO ASSISTANCE FINDING THE PERFECT CAREER PATH; YOU
WILL ALSO SERVE YOUR ALMA MATER BY REMAINING CONNECTED, KEEPING

US UPDATED, IDENTIFYING FUTURE STUDENTS, BECOMING A MENTOR,
SUPPORTING CAMPUS INITIATIVES, VISITING RIT'S EVER CHANGING
LANDSCAPE, AND SHARING YOUR TIME, YOUR TALENT, AND
RESOURCES WITH YOUR HOME. NOW THOUGH, YOU ARE ABOUT TO
GRADUATE, IT IS MY JOB TO FORMALLY
INDUCT YOU INTO THE ASSOCIATION.
SO ON BEHALF OF THE RIT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, I HEREBY DECLARE
THE CLASS OF 2012 TO BE LIFE MEMBERS OF THE RIT FAMILY, AND
AS SUCH, CHARGE YOU EACH TO REMAIN LOYAL, DEDICATED, AND
ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORTERS OF THE UNIVERSITY
THAT SETS YOU FORTH ON THIS 25TH DAY OF MAY 2012.
WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE YOU AMONG US.
CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO THE FAMILY.
(APPLAUSE)

>> JEREMY HAEFNER: THANK YOU, KATHLEEN. NEXT, I AM VERY
HAPPY TO INTRODUCE RIT PRESIDENT DR. WILLIAM W.
DESTLER.
DR. DESTLER IS AN INTERNATIONAL AUTHORITY ON HIGH-POWER
MICROWAVE SOURCES AND ADVANCED ACCELERATOR CONCEPTS; HE
EARNED HIS BACHELOR'S DEGREE FROM STEVENS INSTITUTE OF
TECHNOLOGY AND HIS PH.D. FROM CORNELL UNIVERSITY - BOTH
DEGREES IN THE FIELD OF APPLIED PHYSICS.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING PRESIDENT DESTLER.
BILL (APPLAUSE)

>> PRESIDENT DESTLER: HE SIGNS BETTER THAN ME.
(LAUGHTER) TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY FOR ALL
OF THE GRADUATES AND YOUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS, AND TO
ALL OF YOU I OFFER MY WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS ON REACHING 3
THIS POINT IN YOUR LIFE'S JOURNEY.
AND TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY FOR REBECCA AND ME, SINCE TODAY IS
OUR FIFTH COMMENCEMENT DAY SINCE OUR ARRIVAL ON THE RIT
CAMPUS ALMOST FIVE YEARS AGO. SO, SOME OF YOU FIRST CAME TO
RIT THE SAME YEAR THAT WE DID.

AND, TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY BECAUSE I WILL TRY TO SIGN THIS
SPEECH. (LAUGHTER)
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
SO, HAPPILY FOR ALL OF YOU, THIS SPEECH WILL BE SHORT.
(LAUGHTER) YOUR TIME IN ROCHESTER HAS
BEEN A SPECIAL TIME FOR BOTH YOU
AND FOR RIT. TOGETHER WE HAVE SEEN MUCH
CHANGE OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AND WE WILL ALL HAVE MUCH TO
REMEMBER AS WE LOOK BACK IN THE FUTURE.
IN VERY REAL WAYS, THE JOURNEY THAT REBECCA AND I EMBARKED
UPON FIVE YEARS AGO IS SIMILAR TO THE JOURNEY THAT ALL OF THE
GRADUATES EMBARK UPON TODAY.
AFTER MANY YEARS IN MARYLAND, WE MOVED AWAY FROM OUR
COMFORTABLE COMMUNITY OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO A NEW
COMMUNITY, AND WE TOOK ON THE CHALLENGES OF NEW
RESPONSIBILITIES.
WE WERE ANXIOUS, EXCITED, HAPPY, AND DEPRESSED ALL AT THE

SAME TIME.
WE WERE FILLED WITH HOPE FOR WHAT THE FUTURE MIGHT HOLD, BUT

WE DID NOT EVEN KNOW IF WE HAD MADE THE RIGHT DECISION IN
MOVING TO ROCHESTER.
FOR MANY OF YOU, THOSE ARE THE SAME EMOTIONS THAT YOU
CONFRONT TODAY.
THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR YOU OUT THERE, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS.
THE RIT CAMPUS, ONCE AS UNKNOWN TO YOU AS YOUR FUTURE, HAS
BECOME A HOME AWAY FROM HOME.
YOU HAVE FOUND FRIENDS AND MENTORS HERE, AND YOU HAVE SET
OUT UPON A CAREER PATH. BUT NOW THE "REAL WORLD"
BECKONS, AND YOU ARE BOTH NERVOUS AND EXCITED ABOUT THE
FUTURE.
PERHAPS, THEREFORE, SOME OF THE LESSONS WE HAVE LEARNED OVER
THE LAST FIVE YEARS MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO YOU AS YOU BEGIN
THIS GREAT NEW ADVENTURE.
SO HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY LESSONS WE HAVE LEARNED SINCE
OUR MOVE ALMOST FIVE YEARS AGO:

1, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE SUCH A MOVE WITHOUT LEARNING
AND GROWING, AND THIS IS A GOOD THING.
2, EVERY DAY WE HAVE WOKEN UP TO LEARN NEW THINGS AND MEET
NEW PEOPLE.
3, CHANGE IS ALMOST ALWAYS A GOOD THING.
TWO, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE UP YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHEN
YOU UNDERTAKE THIS NEW ADVENTURE.
IN FACT, THEY WILL BE YOUR GREATEST SOURCE OF SUPPORT.
THE FRIENDS THAT YOU KEEP, HOWEVER, WILL BE THE FRIENDS
THAT YOU CONTINUE TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH. 3, MAKE NEW
FRIENDS, BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF YOUR WORK

ENVIRONMENT.
YOU WILL NEED BOTH. 4, COME BACK AND SEE YOUR
FAMILY AND YOUR FRIENDS AND RIT OFTEN. ALL OF THEM WILL BE A
SOURCE OF SUPPORT FOR YOU IN GOOD TIMES AND BAD.
5, NOW, MANY OF YOU HAVE FOUND JOBS OR HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO
GRADUATE SCHOOL. MANY OF YOU, HOWEVER, ARE STILL
LOOKING FOR JOBS AND TO YOU I CAN SAY THAT I HAVE BEEN THERE.
WHEN I FINISHED GRADUATE SCHOOL, I SENT OUT MORE THAN
100 LETTERS, AND I RECEIVED NOT ONE ENCOURAGING RESPONSE.
(LAUGHTER) BUT IN THE END, HOWEVER, I
FOUND A JOB. AND YOU WILL TOO.
SO DON'T DESPAIR. FINALLY, KEEP TRACK OF THE
GOINGS-ON AT YOUR ALMA MATER, RIT.
I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT RIT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW AND PROSPER
ALONG WITH ALL OF YOU.
CONGRATULATIONS AND TO ALL OF YOU BEST WISHES FOR A
WONDERFUL FUTURE. (APPLAUSE)

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, RIT GRADUATES, WE ARE PLEASED TO
WELCOME A SPECIAL GUEST TO OUR CELEBRATION TODAY,
BILL NYE, "THE SCIENCE GUY."

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

SEE, THEY LIKE ME, BUT THEY LOVE YOU, BILL.
(LAUGHTER) AS A SCIENTIST, ENGINEER,
COMEDIAN, AUTHOR AND INVENTOR, MR. NYE HAS MADE IT HIS
MISSION TO FOSTER SCIENTIFIC LITERACY THROUGHOUT SOCIETY.
BY MAKING SCIENCE ENTERTAINING AND ACCESSIBLE, HE HELPS
PEOPLE UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE ITS ROLE IN MAKING
OUR WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
HE FIRST BROUGHT HIS CRUSADE TO THE RIT CAMPUS IN 2008 AS A
PRESENTER FOR THE FRANK HORTON DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES.
MANY, OF COURSE, WILL REMEMBER HIS TV SHOW,
"BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY,"
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) -- WHICH ORIGINALLY RAN ON PUBLIC
TELEVISION FROM 1992 TO 1998.
DONNING A WHITE LAB COAT-AND BOW TIES AND AIDED BY FLASHY
VIDEO EFFECTS AND HIS OFFBEAT BRAND OF COMEDY, HE
DEMONSTRATED SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS AND EXPLAINED THEIR
IMPACT TO VIEWERS.
IN EARLIER YEARS, AFTER GRADUATING WITH A BACHELOR'S
DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FROM CORNELL
UNIVERSITY, MR. NYE WORKED AS AN AERONAUTICS ENGINEER FOR
BOEING BEFORE TRANSITIONING INTO A BROADCASTING AND
ENTERTAINMENT CAREER.
TODAY, MR. NYE CONTRIBUTES TO A VARIETY OF NEWS PROGRAMS AS AN
ALL-PURPOSE SCIENCE EXPERT, AND HE ALSO SERVES AS DIRECTOR OF
THE PLANETARY SOCIETY, WHICH IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST
NON-GOVERNMENTAL SPACE INTEREST ORGANIZATION.
MR. NYE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INTRODUCING MANY OF OUR
GRADUATES TO THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE, AND HE REMAINS A
SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THIS NEW GENERATION OF INNOVATORS.
WE ARE VERY HONORED TO MARK HIS RETURN TO THE RIT CAMPUS.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN GIVING A WARM WELCOME TO BILL NYE.

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
>> BILL NYE: WOW.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU! WOW, THANK YOU. LADIES
AND GENTLEMEN, DISTINGUISHED FACULTY, PARENTS, GUESTS,
ALUMNI, KIDS OF ALL AGES -- (LAUGHTER) -- AND ESPECIALLY
STUDENTS AND GRADUATES, WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS. IT IS AN
HONOR TO ADDRESS YOU TODAY AND BE PART OF THIS WONDERFUL
CELEBRATION OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND OF THE FUTURE.

CLASS OF 2012, YOU MAY BE THINKING, "I MADE IT!"
THEY CAN'T GET ME NOW. (LAUGHTER)
OH, BUT MY FRIENDS, THEY ALREADY HAVE.
(LAUGHTER) (EVIL LAUGHTER)
YOUR FOUR YEARS HERE HAVE ENRICHED YOU, CHANGED YOU -- AT
LEAST THAT IS OUR HOPE. AND AS GRADUATES OF THIS REMARKABLE
UNIVERSITY, YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO GO OUT AND, DARE I SAY IT,
CHANGE THE WORLD! (CHEERS)
THIS CAMPUS IS BEAUTIFUL, AND IT ALWAYS WILL HOLD IMPORTANT
MEMORIES FOR YOU, AND WHEN I VISIT HERE, I CANNOT HELP BUT
REFLECT ON MY DAYS AND MY MEMORIES.
SO CLASS OF 2012, HERE'S WISHING YOU THE
JOY OF DISCOVERY, THE JOY OF ADVENTURE. KEEP REACHING.
KEEP SEEKING. KEEP USING YOUR ABILITIES TO BRING OUT THE BEST
IN THOSE AROUND YOU, AND LET THEM BRING OUT THE BEST IN YOU.
AS YOU DO, YOU CAN AND YOU WILL -- DARE I SAY IT? --
CHANGE THE WORLD! THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.
(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) THIS HAS BEEN AN HONOR. THANK
YOU. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)
THANK YOU. OH, WOW. HOW DO I DO IT? DO I DO IT LEFT-HANDED?
THANK YOU ALL. WOW. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

(STONG OVATION)

>> PRESIDENT DESTLER: THANK
YOU, BILL, FOR INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD AND
INSPIRING US TODAY. WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT. WE HAVE A SMALL
TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION FOR YOU.
THIS GLASS PIECE WAS CREATED BY JACOB PFIEFFER, A 2010
GRADUATE OF OUR SCHOOL OF AMERICAN CRAFTS GLASS PROGRAM.
HIS GOALS ARE TO WORK WITH THE VENETIAN GLASS MASTERS IN
ITALY AND THE U.S; AND EVENTUALLY, TO OPERATE HIS OWN
HOT SHOP AND STUDIO.
WE HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THE
CREATIVITY THAT IS RIT'S HALLMARK.
AND THANKS AGAIN FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY MESSAGE.
>> BILL NYE: THANK YOU. IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
(APPLAUSE) IT'S AMORPHOUS, AN AMORPHOUS

SPECULATING -- COBALT. (LAUGHTER)
IT IS BEAUTIFUL. I WILL TREASURE THIS ALWAYS. THANK

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES HERE AT RIT, AS WELL AS THE AMERICAN
UNIVERSITY AT KOSOVO AND AMERICAN COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT

PRESIDENT OF RIT DUBAI, AND A PROFESSOR IN THE B. THOMAS
GOLISANO COLLEGE OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SCIENCES.
LUTHER, PLEASE STAND - THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY AND
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR GRADUATES!

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

IN YOUR PROGRAM, YOU WILL FIND A LIST OF UNDERGRADUATE AND
GRADUATE COLLEGE DELEGATES.
EACH COLLEGE AND THE CENTER FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES
SELECTED THESE STUDENTS TO REPRESENT THEIR FELLOW
GRADUATES DURING THE OFFICIAL CONFERRAL OF DEGREES.
DR. DESTLER, DR. COOPER, DR. FLORES, AND I HAD A WONDERFUL
LUNCHEON WITH ALL THE UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE
DELEGATES IN LATE FEBRUARY WITH THE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE GOAL
OF SELECTING ONE UNDERGRADUATE DELEGATE AND ONE GRADUATE
DELEGATE TO GIVE A STUDENT ADDRESS.
WHILE EACH WILL ADDRESS THE GRADUATES AT THEIR INDIVIDUAL
COLLEGE CEREMONIES, WE SELECTED UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE DELEGATE
CHRISTOPHER HALTIGIN FROM THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES AND
TECHNOLOGY TO DELIVER TODAY'S UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ADDRESS.
HE WILL BE FOLLOWED BY GRADUATE DELEGATE MARIA EUGENIA
FUMAGALLI.
PLEASE JOIN ME IN WELCOMING CHRISTOPHER HALTIGIN TO THE
PODIUM.
CHRIS.

>> CHRISTOPHER HALTIGIN: THANK YOU DR. HAEFNER, AND GOOD
AFTERNOON DR. DESTLER, DR. COOPER, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF

TRUSTEES, FACULTY, STAFF, FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND MOST OF
ALL STUDENTS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2012.
IT IS AN ABSOLUTE HONOR TO BE REPRESENTING OUR GRADUATING
CLASS. I WANT TO THANK THE COLLEGE OF
HEALTH SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY, AS WELL AS MY
FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND TEAMMATES FOR THEIR CONSTANT SUPPORT.
AND FINALLY I WANT TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO COACH WAYNE
WILSON AND HIS STAFF FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE
MY PASSION BECAUSE I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE PLAYED HOCKEY
HERE AT RIT.

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) IT HAS BEEN AN AMAZING FOUR
YEARS HERE, AND LIKE MANY OF YOU I HAVE MIXED FEELINGS THAT
IT IS COMING TO AN END. IN PREPARING THIS SPEECH, I
CONSULTED WITH SOME PROFESSORS,

MY ROOMMATES, TEAMMATES, AND FAMILY, AND I CAME UP WITH
PRETTY MUCH NOTHING, UNTIL I GOT TO THE IDEA OF PICTURING
MYSELF IN THE AUDIENCE, LISTENING TO AN IMAGINARY
GRADUATION SPEAKER.
TO BE HONEST, I'D BE IN THE AUDIENCE PROBABLY NOT PAYING
ATTENTION, NOT LISTENING TO ANYTHING, JOKING WITH MAC,
CLARKEY, CORNY, KNOWLSEY, AND ECKY, AND PROBABLY NOT
LISTENING TO ANYTHING (GUYS COULD YOU PLEASE RAISE
YOUR HANDS SO I NOW YOU'RE PAYING ATTENTION).
I KNOW THREE OF YOU ARE RIGHT THERE, I'M SURE TWO OF YOU ARE
WAY IN THE BACK THERE. I CAN'T SEE YOU BECAUSE OF THE LIGHTS,
BUT THANK YOU FOR RAISING YOUR HANDS.
(LAUGHTER) I'M NOT GOING TO LIE THIS IS
PRETTY COOL, BUT I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT I'M REPRESENTING
ALL OF YOU, THE GRADUATES OF TWELVE. -- OF 2012.
EACH ONE OF US HAS A UNIQUE STORY OF HOW WE ENDED UP AT
RIT.
COMING IN AS A FRESH FACED 20 YEAR OLD CANADIAN KID
RECRUITED TO PLAY HOCKEY HERE, MY ORIGINAL GOAL WAS TO MOVE
ON TO THE NHL.
NOW I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR.
AT RIT, WE'VE ENCOUNTERED MANY UPS AND DOWNS AND HAVE BATTLED
ADVERSITY.
IT WAS DEMANDING AND DIFFICULT.
SOMETIMES WE WON AND SOMETIMES WE LOST.
BUT ULTIMATELY WE WON! I MEAN TODAY WE CAN FINALLY SAY THAT
WE MADE IT AND WE WORKED INCREDIBLY HARD AND SOMETIMES
IT HURT A LITTLE BIT.
TODAY IS A CHANCE FOR CELEBRATION AND MAYBE EVEN A
LITTLE SADNESS.
SOME OF YOU MAY SHED A FEW TEARS, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
THAT'S OKAY. TODAY IS A CELEBRATION ABOUT US AND
THOSE INFLUENTIAL PROFESSORS, FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND THAT ONE
MESSY ROOMMATE THAT SHAPED US INTO THE SUCCESS WE ALREADY
ARE. THEY CARED ABOUT US ENOUGH TO
MAKE OUR CAREER HERE AT RIT EQUAL TO MANY STEPS IN THE
RIGHT DIRECTION.
BUT WHAT IS THIS DIRECTION AND
WHERE DOES IT LEAD US NOW?
MAYBE FIRST TO TC RILEYS, BUT TO BE HONEST, I HAVE NO IDEA.

(LAUGHTER) I DON'T HAVE ANY AMAZING
INSIGHT ABOUT THE FUTURE, JUST A WHOLE LOT OF EXCITEMENT.
GEARING UP TO TAKE THE MCATS AGAIN AND APPLY TO MED SCHOOLS,
I'M NOT AT A POINT IN MY LIFE
WHERE I'M READY TO GIVE ADVICE TO COLLEGE GRADUATES.
BUT I HAVE ONE THING THAT I REALLY BELIEVE AND THAT I WANT
TO SHARE. WE'RE BEYOND READY! WE'VE
UNDERGONE SOME INTENSE TRAINING
THROUGHOUT OUR TIME HERE AND HAVE TRAINED FOR A PURPOSE.
WE ARE ABSOLUTELY READY FOR WHATEVER THE NEXT SHIFT BRINGS.
LET'S MAKE RIT AND OUR FAMILIES PROUD, AND HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF
FUN DOING IT.
THE FUTURE IS FAST, SLIPPERY, AND BRIGHT EXACTLY THE WAY
IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES THE GAME SO GREAT.

FOR ONE LAST TIME, A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO MY FELLOW
GRADUATES AND YOUR FAMILIES, AND THANK YOU TO RIT FROM ALL
OF US FOR THIS TRULY AMAZING EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU, AND
ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND. (APPLAUSE)
>> MARIA EUGENIA FUMAGALLI: GOOD AFTERNOON RIT, FAMILY,
FRIENDS, AND THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2012.3
SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT WHENEVER YOU GET CONGRATULATED FOR
SOMETHING, LIFE BECOMES MORE CHALLENGING SO
CONGRATULATIONS!

(LAUGHTER) IT IS AN HONOR TO STAND HERE
ADDRESSING YOU IN RECOGNITION OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS.
I CAME HERE TWO YEARS AGO WITH BLANK NOTEBOOKS AND AN
EAGERNESS TO EXPERIENCE GRADUATE SCHOOL.
SINCE THEN, THE WORD "CHANGE" HAS BEEN A PART OF MY EVERY
DAY, AND EVEN WHEN PREPARING TODAY'S SPEECH THAT WORD KEPT
RESONATING IN MY HEAD.
AS A MASTER'S IN SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING STUDENT, THE WORD
"CHANGE" HAS BEEN IN MY EVERYDAY LIFE.
THE FACT THAT WE NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY WE DO THINGS IS THE
BASIC PREMISE FOR ANYONE STUDYING OR WORKING IN THIS
FIELD.
BUT I ALSO LEARNED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A SPECIALIST
IN THE TOPIC TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION.
IT IS BY BEING MORE CONSCIOUS AND ADJUSTING OUR EVERYDAY
CHOICES THAT ULTIMATELY THINGS WILL CHANGE.
OF COURSE, ENGINEERS AND DESIGNERS NEED TO PROVIDE THE
TECHNOLOGY TO ENABLE THIS CHANGE, BUT IT IS IN EVERY
PERSONAL CHOICE WE MAKE THAT THE IMPACT WILL BE POSSIBLE.
TODAY IS A BIG MILESTONE: CHANGE IS JUST AROUND THE
CORNER AS WE GRADUATE AND EMBARK IN OUR NEXT NEW
ADVENTURE.
AS GRADUATE STUDENTS, MOST OF US CAME TO RIT TO PURSUE
DIFFERENT KINDS OF SPECIALIZATIONS.
WE EITHER DECIDED TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL TO ADVANCE OUR
EDUCATION, OR HAVE CHOSEN A LIFE DEDICATED TO ACADEMICS.
IN EITHER CASE, TODAY WE MOVE FORWARD.
OUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE IS AROUND THE CORNER AND A NEW CHAPTER IS

STARTING.
DECIDING TO PURSUE A GRADUATE LEVEL EDUCATION WAS NOT A
TRIVIAL CHOICE, BUT WE WERE NOT AFRAID OF WHAT WAS COMING
NEXT. IT IS MY MESSAGE TO YOU: NOT TO
RESIST CHANGE, BUT TO EMBRACE IT AND TO DRIVE IT.

ON THIS DAY OF CELEBRATION, I APPLAUD YOU, BUT I ALSO
CHALLENGE YOU TO HONOR ONE OF RIT'S CORE VALUES BY INCLUDING
SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE CHOICES,
INNOVATING AND BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE FOR THE NEXT
GENERATIONS TO COME.
AS OF TODAY, WE ARE A NEW CLASS OF PROFESSIONALS, AND RIT HAS
PREPARED US TO BE SPECIALISTS, LEADERS, AND INNOVATORS.
IT MUST BE IN OUR AGENDA, REGARDLESS OF YOUR AREA OF
EXPERTISE, TO SHIFT CURRENT PARADIGMS AND START BUILDING A
PATH OF BALANCE TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
LET'S MAKE NEW RULES, WE ARE THE FUTURE!

GRACIAS AND CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2012!

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) >> DR. HAEFNER: THANK YOU,
CHRIS AND MARIA! GREAT COMMENTS AND A GREAT KICK-OFF TO THE
WEEKEND'S CELEBRATION!

YOU HAVE ALL BEEN SITTING AWHILE, LISTENING, AND WE THANK
YOU FOR THAT. I WILL INTRODUCE THE
UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE COLLEGE DELEGATES AND THE DEAN

AUDIENCE, AS WELL AS THEIR FAMILIES AND OTHER GUESTS, TO
STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED.
THE DELEGATE WILL ACCEPT A SYMBOLIC DIPLOMA PRESENTED BY
HIS OR HER DEAN ON BEHALF OF ALL THE GRADUATES OF THAT
COLLEGE.
NOW, THIS IS IMPORTANT. PLEASE WILDLY CHEER THE
ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE GRADUATES FOR EACH COLLEGE.
