Explain procedure to client, speaking clearly, slowly and directly while
maintaining face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Check to make sure bed is at a safe level and that bed wheel locks are engaged.
Before assisting to stand, make sure client is wearing shoes
Assist client to sitting position with feet flat on the floor. Apply transfer belt
securely over clothing/gown of client
Before assisting to stand, provide instructions to client including
pre-arranged signal to alert client to begin standing.
Stand facing client positioning yourself to ensure your safety and the safety of the
client. Count to three or use your prearranged signal to alert client to begin
standing.
On signal, gradually assist client by grasping transfer belt on both sides with
an upward grasp while maintaining stability of client’s legs.
Walk slightly behind and to one side of client while holding onto transfer belt.
After ambulation, assist client to bed and remove transfer belt.
Makes sure signaling device is within reach and bed is in low position.
