Miracle! All 163 passengers survive as plane breaks into two
This Boeing 737, which has broken into two pieces
belongs to Caribbean Airlines.
Carrying 157 passengers and 6 crew members,
it took off from New York's JFK International Airport Friday night.
But when it landed in Guyana Saturday morning,
the pilot lost control and it careened off the runway, crashing through the fence,
and breaking into two pieces.
It was 60m from a cliff edge.
Just as everyone was thanking their good fortune,
passengers smelled leaking gasoline.
Some passengers were so eager to escape
they jumped directly onto the plane wings.
With rescuers slow to arrive,
some passengers walked around 20 minutes
to the nearest terminal.
Rescuers arrived later to evacuate the remaining passengers.
More than 100 passengers were injured.
Most sustained minor injuries,
but three passengers sustained more serious trauma.
Though the plane broke into two pieces,
all 163 people on it survived,
which the airline described as "a miracle."
