>>> HI.
AND WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S
EDITION OF COMMON GROUND.
I'M YOUR HOST, ASHLEY HALL.
COMMON GROUND IS A WEEKLY SERIES
THAT HIGHLIGHTS NORTHERN AND
CENTRAL MINNESOTA CULTURE.
EACH WEEK WE'LL EXPLORE THE
UNIQUE PEOPLE, PLACES AND EVENTS
THAT ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF
OUR REGION.
EACH WEEK COMMON GROUND
VIDEOGRAPHERS, EDITORS AND
MYSELF WILL TAKE VIEWERS ON A
JOURNEY OF EXPLORATION IN A
WORLD OF ART, HISTORY AND
CULTURE.
THIS WEEK, WE'LL INTRODUCE YOU
TO AL BELLEVEAU WHO CREATES
STEEL WRAPS LAKE SCULPTURES, AND
MEET DWAYNE BARNHART, A CARTOON
ARTIST FROM AITKIN WHO SHOWS US
HOW HIS CARTOONS ENTERTAIN AND
INFORM.
>>> GREETINGS.
I'M AL BELLEVEAU, LOCAL
BLACKSMITH UP HERE IN MINNESOTA.
TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE SOME
STONES AND STEEL AND WE'RE GOING
TO MAKE OURSELVES A BIRD.
NOW, IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY REAL
PRACTICAL OR PRAGMATIC USES, BUT
IT'S KIND OF PRETTY, AND I LIKE
TO HAVE THEM SITTING AROUND, AND
OTHER PEOPLE DO, TOO.
AND WE'RE GOING TO TAKE FOUR
RODS OF QUARTER INCH MILD STEEL
IRON.
WE'RE GOING TO WELD THEM
TOGETHER.
WE'RE USING A WIRE WELDER, WHICH
USES CO 2 AS A SHIELDING GAS,
SHOOTS LITTLE WIRE OUT HERE WHEN
I PULL THE TRIGGER ALONG WITH
ABOUT 28 VOLTS AND ABOUT 70 OR
80 AMPS.
IT'S ABLE TO MELT THE WIRE, MELT
THE BASE METAL AND CREATE WHAT
WE CALL A WELD, WHICH IS BONDING
TWO PIECES OF METAL TOGETHER.
WE PUT A LITTLE BIT OF WELD ON
THERE.
BASICALLY WE TACK THESE FOUR
RODS TOGETHER.
EVENTUALLY I WILL CLAMP THESE
INTO CHUCKS AND VICES.
THERE WE GO.
FOUR RODS WELDED TOGETHER.
AND WE'LL STICK THESE IN AN OLD
PIPE THREADING MACHINE WITH A
PIPE VICE ON IT, AND I'LL
TERRORIST THESE COALS, WHICH
MEANS I WON'T HEAT THEM UP TO
TWIST.
THIS IS RIGID PIPE THREADING
MACHINE, WHICH IS USED FOR
THREADING PIPES, AND IT'S
MOUNTED ON A COUPLE OF I BEAMS
THAT ARE ABOUT 20 FEET LONG, SO
I CAN ACTUALLY TWIST THINGS UP
TO 20 FEET LONG, AND THEN JUST A
PIPE VICE IN THE BACK, AND THIS
IS ACTUALLY A LATHE CHUCK
BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL PIPE
THREADING CHUCK BLEW UP ONE DAY
WHEN I WAS TWISTING SOMETHING A
LITTLE HEAVIER THAN I SHOULD
HAVE, AND SO WE'VE BEEN USING
THIS LATHE CHUCK EVER SINCE.
THIS MACHINE HAS A WONDERFUL
GEAR REDUCTION IN IT THAT ALLOWS
IT TO -- WELL, IT KEEPS
TWISTING.
IT'S NEVER STOPPED TWISTING.
SOMETHING BAD ALWAYS HAPPENS
BEFORE IT STOPS, LIKE THE VICE
BLOWS UP OR THE CHUCK BLOWS UP.
SO WE BASICALLY JUST CLAMP THIS
DOWN.
WE TURN IT ON, AND IT COLD
TWISTS THESE RODS, WHICH SAVES
US A LITTLE ENERGY, HAVING TO
HEAT THEM UP TO TWIST THEM.
YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL IT'S GETTING
ABOUT READY.
YOU CAN HEAR IT KIND OF LUGGING
DOWN A LITTLE BIT, AND THAT'S
ABOUT ENOUGH, AND IF IT GOES
BEYOND THAT POINT, SOMETHING
MIGHT END UP BREAKING.
IT MIGHT BE ME EVEN.
I'VE HAD IT KIND OF BLOW APART
AND THROW ME AROUND A LITTLE
BIT, TOO.
SO IT'S VERY GOOD AT WHAT IT
DOES.
AND THIS IS WHAT I CALL ROCK
STOCK, AND SOON WE SHALL BE
INSERTING SOME ROCKS INTO THIS
PIECE.
WE'RE WELL ON OUR WAY TO
CREATING OURSELVES A LITTLE
HIERN -- IRON FEATHERED FRIEND.
SO FROM HERE, WE MOVE OVER TO
THE FOREST.
OKAY.
A LITTLE INSERTION.
THERE WE GO.
A LITTLE BIT OF AIR.
A LITTLE BIT OF PROPANE.
THERE.
THAT WASN'T SO BAD.
SO YOU GET THIS REALLY NICE
COLOR.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT'S JUST RIGHT.
THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR.
YOU KNOW, NICE SPACE, RELATIVELY
HOT METAL ABOUT THIS LONG.
WE LOOK LIKE WE'RE READY, WE'RE
HOT.
I'M GOING TO PUT A COUPLE OF
VISE-GRIPS ON HERE SO THAT I CAN
HOLD ON TO IT.
VISE-GRIPS ARE WONDERFUL, AND
THEY'RE BASICALLY THE MODERN
RENDITION OF BLACKSMITH ARMS.
OFTENTIMES BLACKSMITHS MADE
THEIR OWN TONGS.
IT LOOKS LIKE WE'RE MORE THAN
READY, SO I'M GOING TO SHUT THIS
DOWN, AND WE'VE GOT THIS NICE
LITTLE CHUNK OF HOT METAL HERE.
HOPEFULLY IT WILL WORK, BECAUSE
IT IT DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK EVERY
TIME, SO WE MAKE SURE WE'RE NICE
AND TIGHT, AND THEN WE START TO
UNTWIST IT.
AND THIS IS REALLY THE BEAUTY OF
THIS.
WE UNTWIST IT UNTIL WE END UP
WITH WHAT WE CALL A BLACKSMITH
BASKET, WHICH WAS OFTENTIMES
USED AS ORNAMENTATION OR HANDLES
OR DIFFERENT ITEMS LIKE POKERS
OR DIFFERENT THINGS THAT NEEDED
HANDLES, AND WE TIGHTEN IT BACK
UP AND KIND OF POUND ON IT A
LITTLE BIT BECAUSE WE LIKE TO
MODIFY THE TWIST, AND WE TIGHTEN
IT UP EVEN MORE.
WE LIKE TO GET IT NICE AND TIGHT
BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT THE STONE
TO FALL OUT FOR ABOUT 200 YEARS,
AND THEN THERE.
THERE WE GO.
NOW WE HAVE THIS LOVELY BIRD
BODY WRAPPED UP INSIDE OF THIS
STEEL, AND BECAUSE IT'S WRAPPED
UP INSIDE OF THE STEEL, I CAN DO
MG WITH IT NOW, BECAUSE I WELD
STEEL, AND THERE WILL BE LESS OF
AN EXPLOSION THIS TIME.
WE'RE GOING TO PUT ANOTHER ROCK
ON THE OTHER END OF THIS SO WE
CAN FULLY UTILIZE THIS ROCK.
MOST OF THESE ROCKS COME FROM
LAKE SUPERIOR BECAUSE THEY'VE
GOT REALLY COOL ROCKS THERE THAT
HAVE KIND OF BROKEN OFF FROM THE
CLIFFS, AND THEY'VE ROLLED OUT
AND ROLLED IN FORE -- FOR A LONG
TIME UNTIL THEIR EDGES BECOME
ROUNDED OFF AND THEY BECOME
THESE BEAUTIFUL LITTLE EGGS.
OH, NICE, VERY NICE.
I JUST LOVE THE WAY THIS STUFF
JUST KIND OF WORKS.
GET IN THERE LITTLE STONE.
YES, I KNOW IT'S HOT.
BUT THAT'S GOOD.
OKAY.
BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO BE
PUTTING LITTLE ITTY BITTY STONES
IN NOW, WE'RE GOING TO BE USING
A SMALLER FORGE.
ACTUALLY THIS IS AN ACETYLENE
TORCH WITH A ROSEBUD ON IT.
IT'S CALLED A ROSEBUD BECAUSE IT
IT HAS A FLAME LIKE A ROSEBUD,
KIND OF NEAT.
HEATS THINGS UP FAIRLY FAST.
THE STONES ENJOY THE FACT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE HANGING OUT
WITH HUMANS FOR A WHILE AND NOT
ROLLING AROUND QUITE AS MUCH AS
THEY ARE ACCUSTOMED TO, AND
EVENTUALLY THE STEEL WILL ROT
AWAY IN A FEW HUNDRED YEARS, AND
THEY'LL CONTINUE TO DO WHAT
STONES DO, WHICH IS GET SMALLER.
SO WE'RE GOING TO DO THE SAME
THING THAT THE FORGE DID, EXCEPT
WE'RE DOING IT IT ON A MUCH
SMALLER LEVEL, HEATING UP AN
AREA OF STEEL HERE, UNTWISTING
IT, MAKING AN INSERTION, TIGHT
EPING THINGS DOWN, AND THIS WILL
BE THE HEAD FOR THE BIRD, OR
BIRDS.
THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT STEEL,
AND STEEL IS EVERYWHERE, ALL
METALS, YOU KNOW.
WE'VE TRIED TO REPLACE A LOT OF
STEEL WITH PLASTIC AND
COMPOSITE, VARIOUS DIFFERENT
TYPES OF GRAPHITE COMPOSITE
STUFF, AND THAT'S GREAT.
I THINK THERE'S A PLACE FOR
THAT, BUT STEEL IS STILL KIND OF
THE BACKBONE OF THIS COUNTRY,
AND IT'S RELATIVE -- YOU KNOW,
YOU PICK IT UP.
IT'S COLD.
IT'S HARD, BUT ALL YOU'VE GOT TO
DO IS ADD A LITTLE ENERGY TO IT,
A LITTLE BIT OF HEAT, AND IT'S
JUST ALL KINDS OF WARM AND
SQUISHY, AND YOU'RE ABLE TO
MANIPULATE IT THEN, REAL SIMILAR
TO CLAY.
THEN YOUR METAL BECOMES KIND OF
THIS PLASTIC CLAY-LIKE -- I
DON'T WANT TO USE THE TERM
PLASTIC, BUT CLAY-LIKE SUBSTANCE
THAT YOU CAN MANIPULATE.
THAT'S REALLY WHAT BLACKSMITHING
IS ALL ABOUT, HEATING THINGS UP
AND UTILIZING VARIOUS TOOLS IN
ORDER TO MANIPULATE THAT HOT
PLASTIC-LIKE METAL.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, IT COOLS
DOWN, AND IT ENDS UP BEING THIS
NICE HARD THING THAT CAN TAKE
THE WEAR AND TEAR AND ELEMENTS.
OKAY FROM THIS POINT, WE'RE
GOING TO PUT SOME TAIL FEATHERS
ON THESE GUYS.
THIS ONE LOOKS LIKE IT'S GOING
TO HAVE VERY SHORT TAIL
FEATHERS, AND THIS ONE IS GOING
TO HAVE VERY LONG TAIL FEATHERS.
ALL I'M GOING TO DO THERE IS
BASICALLY OPEN THE RODS UP A
LITTLE BIT SO DOWN THE ROAD I
CAN EXPAND THEM AND MANIPULATE
THEM A LITTLE BETTER.
WE'RE JUST GOING TO OPEN THAT UP
A LITTLE, DO THE SAME DOWN HERE.
THERE.
NOW THAT HOS THOOS -- HAS TO
COOL OFF A LITTLE BIT WITHOUT
CREATING A LOT OF SMOKE, AND
WE'RE JUST GOING TO CHOP IT UP
INTO LITTLE PIECES.
THIS IS AN AWKWARD LOOKING THING
HERE.
I'M JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT
IF -- NO, MAYBE WE CAN DO
THERE HAS TO BE A WAY THAT I CAN
ATTACH STEEL TO THESE ROCKS, AND
ONCE I DO THAT, THEN I CAN DO
ANYTHING.
YOU KNOW, IF THEY'VE GOT STEEL
ON THEM, BUT OTHERWISE YOU GLUE
ROCKS TOGETHER, AND THEY ONLY
HOLD FOR A LITTLE WHILE.
YOU CAN DRILL HOLES IN THEM AND
FIBERGLASS IN LITTLE RODS, AND
I'VE DONE THAT, TOO, AND PUT
ROCKS TOGETHER, AND THAT'S
PRETTY COOL, BUT IN ORDER TO
CREATE LARGER SCULPTURES WITH
THESE STONES, SOMEHOW WE HAD TO
GET STEEL AROUND THEM.
ONCE WE WERE ABLE TO WRAP STEEL
AROUND ROCKS, WE JUST DID THAT A
LOT BECAUSE IT'S EXCITING.
YOU HEAT THE STEEL UP.
IT'S JUST ALL -- YOU CAN JUST
FEEL THE MOLECULAR ENERGY
INSIDE.
IT'S JUST BURSTING, WAITING TO
HAVE SOMETHING HAPPEN TO IT, AND
SO WE ENDED UP WITH A LOT OF
THINGS, A LOT OF STEEL WRAPPED
AROUND IT, A LOT OF ROCKS, AND I
MADE ALL KINDS OF COOL STUFF,
MADE BIRDS AND STRANGE LITTLE
PEOPLE, A LOT OF RAILINGS,
RAILINGS WITH ROCKS, ALL KINDS
WHICH THINGS.
I DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WAS A
METAPHOR AT PLAY HERE.
THIS REALIZATION CAME TO ME,
WHAT I WAS DOING.
THAT'S WHEN I REALIZED THAT THIS
IS THE METAPHOR FOR US, WHICH
MAKES PERFECT SENSE, THAT THE
ROCK IS THE SOUL OR THE SPIRIT
OF MAN.
IT'S THAT THING THAT EXISTS
BEYOND THE MORTAL FLESH, THAT
THE STEEL IS THE FLESH, AND IT'S
TEMPORARY.
IT'S WRAPPED AROUND THIS SOUL OR
SPIRIT, ESSENCE, WHATEVER YOU
WISH TO CALL IT, FOR A VERY
SHORT TIME.
IN THE CASE OF MY SCULPTURES,
IT'S MAYBE 100 OR 200 YEARS,
DEPENDING ON THE CONDITIONS, THE
HUMIDITY, THINGS OF THAT NATURE.
FOR US, YOU KNOW, IT'S ANYWHERE
FROM NO TIME AT ALL TO 100 YEARS
OR SOMETIMES A LITTLE BIT MORE.
IT CONSTANTLY REMINDS ME OF MY
MORTALITY, BUT IT ALSO REMIND ME
OF MY ETERNITY, AND SO IT JUST
MAKES IT WHOLE WRAPPING IRON
AROUND STONES, WRAPPING FLESH
AROUND SPIRITS JUST A LITTLE BIT
DEEPER AND MORE MEANINGFUL TO
ME, AND REALLY THAT'S THE
ESSENCE OF IT.
OUTSIDE I HAVE A SCULPTURE THAT
I MADE FOR MY FRIEND THAT DIED
TWO YEARS AGO, OCTOBER 15th,
THAT I MADE FOR HIM, BECAUSE
WHAT IT IS, IT'S THE STONE
SPECTER OF DEATH.
SO BRADLEY DIED IN
OCTOBER 15th, 2007 AFTER
FIGHTING CANCER FOR ABOUT SEVEN
MONTHS.
VERY HARROWING EXPERIENCE, AND
YET IT HAD A LOT OF SPIRITUAL
SIGNIFICANCE, AND SO THE STONE
SPECTER OF DEATH BASICALLY IS
THIS MYTH LOGICAL CREATURE THAT
COMES DOWN AND LITERALLY DOES
PLUCK THE SOULS OUT OF THE
BODIES, THE EARTHLY FLESH AND
THEN TRANSPORTS THEM TO WHEREVER
THEY MAY BE TIED IN THE FUTURE,
WHETHER THAT'S YOUR CONCEPTION
OF HEAVEN, REINCARNATION,
WHATEVER THE NEXT STEP IN THE
PROCESS IS.
THE STONE SPECTER OF DEATH IS
THAT TRANSPORT AGENT.
SO WHAT IT HAS IS LITERALLY THIS
DRAGON LOOKING CREATURE HAS
PLUCKED THIS PERFECT WHITE STONE
OUT OF THIS CAGE OF IRON, AND
THAT IS THE METAPHOR OF THE
SPIRIT BEING TRANSPORTED THEN ON
ITS JOURNEY.
SO THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO SAY
ABOUT WHAT THIS IS REALLY ALL
ABOUT NOW.

>>> I STARTED DOING CARTOONS WAY
BACK IN THE 1960'S AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA.
RIGHT NOW I'M IN THE AITKIN
INDEPENDENT AGE, AND MY GOAL IS
TO KIND OF GET OTHER NEWSPAPERS
TO TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THESE,
TOO, BECAUSE A LOT OF THE
CARTOONS HAVE SORT AFTER -- SORT
OF A REGIONAL FLARE TO THEM.
SOMETIMES I TALK ABOUT THE ICE
GOING OUT OF THE LAKE, THE END
OF THE FISHING SEASON OR THE
SNOW BIRDS COMING BACK FOR THE
YEAR, AND THE NICE THING ABOUT
BEING A CARTOONIST IS YOU CAN
LIVE WHEREVER YOU WANT TO LIVE
AND SEND YOUR WORK IN.
IN THE OLD DAYS, THEY USED TO DO
CARTOONING WHERE YOU COULD -- IF
YOU WANTED TO WORK FOR WARNER
BROTHERS, YOU HAVE TO MOVE TO
LOS ANGELES.
IF YOU WANTED TO WORK FOR A
COMIC BOOK COMPANY, YOU WOULD
HAVE TO MOVE TO NEW YORK.
BUT NOWADAYS ALMOST ALL THE
CARTOONISTS I KNOW JUST WORK OUT
OF THEIR HOME, AND IT SEEMS TO
WORK OUT JUST FINE FOR THEM.
THE IDEA I CAME UP WITH IS THE
REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO TRY TO
UNSEAT OBAMA, AND I'M THINKING
THEY'RE GOING TO GET THE HELP OF
THE TEA PARTY THIS YEAR.
AND I'M SORT OF USING THE
ANALOGY THAT IT'S SORT OF LIKE
THE ROADRUNNER BEING CHASED BY
WILEY COYOTE, AND THE WILEY
COYOTE IS THE G.O.P.
SO WHAT I DID WAS I FOUND, OKAY,
WHAT DOES THE ROADRUNNER LOOK
LIKE, WHAT DOES WILEY COYOTE
LOOK LIKE, AND HOW CAN I SORT OF
KEY OFF OF THOSE IMAGES.
I DREW IT UP THE WAY IT IS HERE.
I HAVE TO PUT IT ON HERE, SO I'M
GOING TO GO OVER TO MY LIGHT
TABLE AND ACTUALLY TRACE IT.
YOU CAN SEE THE IMAGE THROUGH
HERE NOW, BUT NOT VERY WELL, SO
I DO HAVE A LIGHT TABLE, AND
I'LL PUT IT IN AND RECREATE THIS
IN PENCIL HERE AND THEN COME
BACK AND INK IT AND HOPEFULLY
NOT SPILL ANY INK.
I JUST USE AN ORDINARY NO. 2
PENCIL.
THERE'S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT
IT.
IN THIS CASE I'M JUST DOING A
REALLY ROUGH TRACE OF EVERYTHING
THAT'S HERE.
AND IF I'M CONFUSED ABOUT
ANYTHING, I JUST KIND OF LIFT IT
IT UP AND SEE WHERE I'M AT.
LATER ON, I'LL GO BACK TO THE
ORIGINAL SOURCE AND ACTUALLY
LOOK AT THE ROADRUNNER IMAGES
AGAIN, LOOK AT THE OBAMA IMAGES
AGAIN TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE
KIND OF CLOSE.
THIS PROCESS CAN GO KIND OF
QUICKLY BECAUSE I'M JUST LOOKING
TO BLOCK THINGS IN.
IT'S KIND OF GOOD TO DO IT
QUICKLY, BECAUSE YOU CAN SORT OF
GET A REAL QUICKNESS AND
SMOOTHNESS OF THE LINES, WHERE
SOMETIMES IF YOU SLOW DOWN
REALLY TOO MUCH, YOUR CARTOON
STARTS LOOKING A LITTLE BIT
STIFF, AND THIS PROCESS HAS GONE
ON FOR WELL OVER 100 YEARS.
DRAW IT IN PENCIL.
TRACE IT IN INK, AND THEN ERASE
THE PENCIL LINES.
THIS IS THE PROCESS I GO THROUGH
EVERY WEEK, AND IT'S KIND OF FUN
TO DO.
SO NOW BACK TO THE OTHER BOARD
AND FINISH INKING.
WITH ANY LUCK, WE'LL HAVE A
POLITICAL CARTOON.
I THINK IT READS PRETTY GOOD
RIGHT NOW.
I'M JUST GOING TO KIND OF CHECK
MY REFERENCES HERE.
I'M GOING TO TRY TO KEEP
EVERYTHING HERE IN FRONT OF ME,
ESPECIALLY THE PICTURE OF OBAMA.
THE ONLY ONE THAT I'VE GOT
THAT'S A REAL SIDE VIEW IS THIS
ONE HERE, AND A LOT OF
CARTOONISTS USE OTHER CARTOONS
AS KIND OF SYMBOLS OF WHAT
THEY'RE TRYING TO CONVEY.
I KNOW CHARLIE BROWN HAS BEEN
USED TIME AND TIME AGAIN AS HE
LOSES THE BASEBALL GAME OR HE
FAILS TO KICK THE FOOTBALL OR
THINGS LIKE THAT, AND THOSE ALL
HAVE POLITICAL CONNOTATIONS WITH
AN EDITORIAL CARTOONIST.
AND SO HERE WE'RE BORROWING FROM
THESE WONDERFUL ICONS.
OKAY.
I THINK WE'RE READY TO START THE
INKING PROCESS.
UNLIKE SOME OF THE CARTOONISTS,
I LIKE TO USE THESE
OLD-FASHIONED DIP PENS.
THEY'RE THE SAME KIND OF PEN
THAT'S BEEN USED FOR WELL OVER
100 YEARS.
THEY KIND OF GET CRUSTY, AND I
JUST KIND OF CLEAN THEM OFF A
LITTLE BIT.
BUT I USE THE OLD INDIA INK,
JUST LIKE IS USED BY ALL OF THE
GREAT CARTOONISTS OF THE PAST.
I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW
CHARLES SCHULTZ A LITTLE BIT,
AND HE HAD A SPECIAL TYPE OF A
NIB THAT GOES ON THE INK PEN AND
THAT NIB WAS GOING OUT OF
BUSINESS.
THE COMPANY DIDN'T MAKE ANY MORE
NIBS ANYMORE.
SO SCHULTZ WENT AND BOUGHT ALL
OF THE NIBS LEFT IN THE ENTIRE
STOCK FROM THIS COMPANY.
SO HE HAD LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF
THEM STILL THAT HE NEVER USED
WHEN HE DIED.
THE NICE THING ABOUT THESE QUILL
PENS LIKE THIS IS THAT YOU CAN
GET KIND OF A THICK AND A THIN
LINE ON THEM, AND IT'S REALLY --
IT'S KIND OF NEAT TO SEE THAT
LINE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE
LOOKING AT SOME OF THE REALLY
GREAT CARTOONISTS OF THE PAST.
I STARTED OUT JUST VISITING A
FEW SCHOOLS, AND NOW I'M DOING
IT QUITE A BIT OF THE TIME WITH
THE COMPASS ORGANIZATION.
IT'S KIND OF FUN TO DO.
WHAT KIND OF LED ME INTO IT WAS
CHARLES SCHULTZ WAS A CARTOONING
TEACHER, AND I JUST THOUGHT THAT
WOULD BE KIND OF COOL TO TEACH
SOME OF THE STUFF I'VE LEARNED
OVER THE YEARS TO THE NEXT
GENERATION OF CARTOONISTS, SO
THAT'S WHAT I DO QUITE A BIT OF
THE TIME, AND I WROTE A BOOK
ABOUT HOW TO DO CARTOONING
CALLED CARTOONING BASICS, AND
CHARLES SCHULTZ WROTE THE
FORWARD TO IT, SO GETTING HIS
STAMP OF APPROVAL ON THAT WAS
REALLY KIND OF A NEAT THING FOR
ME.
EARLIER IN MY CAREER, I HAD A
CHANCE TO DO A SERIES OF VIDEO
GAMES USING THE ROADRUNNER
CHARACTERS.
IN FACT -- THAT WAS A LOT OF
FUN.
I DREW OUT ALL THE STORY BOARDS
FOR THEM, AND I HAD A CHANCE TO
DO ALMOST EVERY KIND OF
CARTOONING EXCEPT FOR ANIMATION,
BUT I HAD MY OWN COMIC STRIP IN
THE NEWSPAPER BACK IN THE 80s,
AND IT WAS CALLED CAN YOU SOLVE
THE MYSTERY, AND IT NEVER
APPEARED IN MINNESOTA.
SO NO ONE AROUND HERE KNOWS
ABOUT IT, BUT IT WAS AN
ADVENTURE STRIP WITH HAWKEYE AND
ANNIE, TWO KIDS SOLVING
MYSTERIES.
WE SOMETIMES THINK THAT ALL OF
THESE ISSUES IN FRONT OF US ARE
JUST SO NEW AND THEY'VE NEVER
BEEN AROUND BEFORE.
NOBODY HAS EVER PROTESTED THE
PRESIDENCY OR NOBODY'S EVER
FILIBUSTERED AN ISSUE OR
WHATEVER IT IS.
BUT AS I GO BACK AND LOOK
THROUGH SOME OF THE HISTORICAL
DOCUMENTS, I FIND OUT THIS STUFF
HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE
COUNTRY WAS BRAND NEW, AND ALSO
THE POLITICS IN THE EARLY, EARLY
DAYS USED TO BE REALLY VICIOUS.
THEY WOULD JUST ACCUSE PEOPLE OF
DOING JUST ANYTHING YOU CAN
POSSIBLY IMAGINE.
THEY DIDN'T CARE VERY MUCH FOR
THE TRUTH AT ALL, AND PEOPLE
COMPLAINED WILDLY ABOUT IT BACK
IN THOSE DAYS, AND JUST LIKE
THEY'RE DOING TODAY.
AND SO IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA
FOR PEOPLE SOMETIMES BEFORE THEY
COMPLAIN TOO MUCH TO TAKE A LOOK
AT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON IN OUR
COUNTRY FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND
YEARS.
I THINK THAT'S A -- NOW I'LL PUT
A NAME ON HERE.
I THINK I'LL SIGN IT RIGHT DOWN
HERE.
IT'S NOT DONE UNTIL THE
SIGNATURE IS ON.
EVEN THOUGH I'M ONLY A PART-TIME
EMPLOYEE OF THE AITKIN AGE, SO
TO SPEAK, BY JUST DOING A
CARTOON A WEEK, I STILL LIKE TO
USE THEIR NAME IN THERE WHEN I
