>> YEE-HAW!
>> COMPARED TO MOUNTAIN BIKING
OR ROCK CLIMBING, FISHING SEEMS
PRETTY TAME, RIGHT?
WELL, CONSIDER THE FACT
THAT YOU'RE DEALING WITH
SHARP HOOKS...
>> WHOA!
>> DEEP WATER...
AND LIVE CRITTERS!
LIKE ANY SPORT, THERE'S A
SAFE WAY TO PLAY.
FOLLOWING A FEW SMART
GUIDELINES WILL KEEP YOUR
FISHING TRIPS INJURY-FREE
FOR YOU AND FOR THE FISH.
LET'S START WITH HOOK SAFETY.
TRY USING BARBLESS HOOKS WHICH
ARE SAFER FOR BOTH FISH
AND PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY'RE
EASIER TO REMOVE
THAN BARBED HOOKS.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE BARBLESS
HOOKS, YOU CAN MASH DOWN A
BARBED HOOK WITH A
PAIR OF PLIERS.
ANY TYPE OF HOOK FLYING
AROUND CAN BE DANGEROUS.
THAT'S WHY IT'S ALWAYS A
GOOD IDEA TO WEAR A HAT
AND EYE PROTECTION WHEN
YOU'RE OUT FISHING.
TO AVOID HOOKING SOMEONE WHEN
YOU CAST, KEEP ABOUT A ROD'S
DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU
AND OTHER ANGLERS.
>> OKAY, GUYS, LET'S STAND
APART JUST A LITTLE BIT SO
NO ONE GETS A HOOK.
>> AND CHECK THE AREA BEHIND
AND AROUND YOU BEFORE YOU CAST
TO MAKE SURE IT'S CLEAR.
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT
WATER SAFETY.
EVEN THE CALMEST LOOKING
BODY OF WATER CAN HAVE HIDDEN
DANGERS LIKE DROP-OFFS
OR UNDERWATER CURRENTS.
TO BE SAFE, PUT LIFE JACKETS
ON THE LITTLE ONES, OR ANYONE
WHO DOESN'T SWIM WELL.
COAST GUARD APPROVAL,
WEIGHT AND SIZE INFORMATION
ARE PRINTED INSIDE THE JACKET.
AND REMEMBER, LIFE JACKETS MUST
FIT SNUGLY TO BE EFFECTIVE.
>> YOU'RE ALL SET.
(music)
>> NEED TO SEE A LIFE JACKET
FOR EVERYBODY ON BOARD.
>> IF YOU'RE OUT ON A BOAT,
TEXAS LAW REQUIRES THAT YOU
HAVE A LIFE JACKET READILY
ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERY PERSON
ON BOARD, INCLUDING CANOES
AND KAYAKS.
KIDS AGED 12 AND UNDER MUST
HAVE A LIFE JACKET ON WHILE
THE BOAT IS UNDERWAY.
NOW THAT YOU'RE SAFE,
WHAT ABOUT THE FISH?
THERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS
THAT YOU CAN DO TO KEEP
FROM INJURING THE FISH
THAT YOU CATCH.
TRY TO HANDLE FISH
AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.
ALWAYS WET YOUR HANDS BEFORE
TOUCHING A FISH SO THAT
YOU WON'T DAMAGE ITS
PROTECTIVE COATING.
>> GO BACK AND GROW!
>> BIG FISH SHOULD NEVER
BE HELD LIKE THIS.
THIS TYPE OF HANDLING CAN HURT
THE FISH'S JAW, HINDERING ITS
ABILITY TO EAT.
>> OKAY NOW, SQUEEZE YOUR
THUMB IN THERE...
>> WHEN HANDLING A LARGER FISH,
USE BOTH HANDS TO SUPPORT
ITS BODY WEIGHT.
IF YOU'RE NOT PLANNING ON
KEEPING YOUR CATCH,
RELEASE IT GENTLY BACK INTO
THE WATER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
KEEPING YOUR FISHING SPOT CLEAN
HELPS BOTH FISH AND HUMANS.
PICK UP YOUR TRASH, INCLUDING
DISCARDED FISHING LINE.
FISHING LINE CAN TAKE HUNDREDS
OF YEARS TO DECOMPOSE AND FISH
AND OTHER CRITTERS CAN GET
TANGLED IN IT AND DIE.
IF YOUR LIVE BAIT CAME FROM A
BAIT SHOP OR ANOTHER BODY OF
WATER, DON'T THROW AWAY ANY
THAT YOU HAVE LEFTOVER
INTO THE WATER.
>> NO SWEETIE, THOSE MINNOWS
DON'T LIVE IN THIS LAKE.
LET'S TAKE IT WITH US.
>> CRITTERS THAT ARE NOT
NATURAL TO THAT WATER BODY
CAN INTERFERE WITH THE PLANTS
AND ANIMALS THAT LIVE
THERE NATURALLY.
IF THERE ARE OTHER ANGLERS
NEARBY, ASK THEM IF THEY WOULD
LIKE TO USE YOUR LEFTOVER BAIT.
>> EXCUSE ME, WE'VE GOT SOME
LEFTOVER MINNOWS.
WOULD YOU LIKE THEM?
>> YES, THANK YOU.
I'LL PUT THEM IN THIS BUCKET
RIGHT HERE.
>> OR, IF NO ONE WANTS IT,
DUMP IT IN A TRASHCAN OR ON
LAND AWAY FROM THE WATER.
OH, AND ONE MORE THING-WHEN
FISHING IN THE HOT TEXAS SUN,
BE SURE TO BRING ALONG PLENTY
OF WATER AND SUN PROTECTION.
FISHING CAN BE RELAXING...
OR THRILLING!
>> WHOAA!
>> DON'T LET AN ACCIDENT RUIN
YOUR NEXT FISHING TRIP.
KEEP IT SAFE AND YOU'LL
KEEP IT FUN.
>> WHEN FISHING YOU HAVE
TO BE VERY PATIENT.
YOU MIGHT BE STANDING OUT
THERE FOR A WHILE WAITING FOR
A FISH TO TUG ON YOUR LINE.
>> IT'S STILL GOOD IF YOU
DON'T GET TO CATCH A FISH.
IT'S GOOD THAT THEY LIVE.
