>>> WELCOME TO NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES CITY SLICE.
I'M BOB BATCHER. I'VE BEEN WAITING TO HAVE THIS
INTERVIEW SINCE ABOUT JUNE 1st. COACH PEEK HAS COME BACK FROM
LONDON, JUST TO COME RIGHT HERE ON NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES CITY
SLICE AND TELL US WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT.
COACH PEEK, CONGRATULATIONS AND HELLO.
>> THANK YOU. >> HOW YOU DOING?
>> GOOD, GOOD. >> HAVE YOU SETTLED IN YET?
YOU BACK TO THE ROUTINE? >> A LITTLE BIT, A LITTLE BIT.
I'M STILL NOT SLEEPING VERY WELL.
I'M STILL ON LONDON TIME, SO THAT'S A LITTLE OFF, BUT, YEAH,
I'M BACK. I'M BACK IN MY GYM, BACK WITH MY
KIDS. >> SO YOU GOT TO SLEEP IN
LONDON? >> NO I DIDN'T GET TO SLEEP MUCH
IN LONDON. >> LET'S AT THIS TIME BACK AND
RELAX AND WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT BECAUSE AS I SAID JUST
BEFORE THE CAMERA CAME ON, YOU NEVER GOT 10 MINUTES WITH BOB
COSTAS DID YOU? >> NO.
>> WE ARE SO PROUD OF THE WORK THAT YOU AND OUR ATHLETES DID
OVER IN LONDON. IT AS AWESOME WATCHING.
>> THANK YOU. >> DID YOU WATCH?
>> YES. >> YOU HAVE A SPECIAL KID
SITTING NEXT TO YOU, DON'T YOU? >> VERY SPECIAL KID.
>> YOU WANT TO GIVE US HIS NAME? WHAT'S HIS PROPER INTRODUCTION?
>> HIS NAME IS KEYSHAWN DAVIS. HE'S AN 85-POUND JUNIOR BOXER,
AND HE'S ONE OF MY -- WHAT I CALL MY ELITE BOXERS.
ELITE JUNIORS. >> I WANT TO SHAKE YOUR HAND
BECAUSE YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS. DID SHE TELL YOU THAT I TOOK HER
ON? THE LAST TIME SHE WAS ON THE
SHOW. >> WELL, THAT WAS HIS BROTHER.
THAT WAS HIS BROTHER THAT WAS HERE.
>> I IGNORED WITNESSES. DID YOU HEAR WHAT HAPPENED THE
LAST TIME SHE WAS ON THE SHOW? >> NO.
>> SHE HAD TO TAKE HER GLASSES OFF.
BECAUSE SHE WAS AFRAID I WAS GOING TO HURT HER.
NO GLOVES THIS TIME? >> NO GLOVES THIS TIME.
>> DID YOU SPAR WITH BOB COSTAS? >> NO, I DIDN'T.
>> LOOK AT THAT. HE'S A SHORT GUY, ISN'T HE?
>> YEAH, HE'S SHORT. >> HE'S BEEN DOING THIS A LOT
LONGER THAN ME, SO I BETTER SETTLE IN AND ASK YOU SOME GOOD
QUESTIONS. RIGHT AFTER YOU DID THE
INTERVIEW ON NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES IS WHEN IT WAS UP
AND DOWN IF YOU WERE GOING OR OR NOT.
WHAT WAS GOING ON THERE? >> THAT WAS SOME OF THE POLITICS
PLAYED IN THE BUSINESS AS TO WHO WAS GOING TO BE THE COACHES FOR
THE 2012 OLYMPICS, AND WHAT HAPPENED WAS WHEN THE DUST
CLEARED, THEY CALLED ME. THEY CALLED ME AND SAID, HEY,
YOU KNOW, WE NEED YOU OVER HERE. YOU STILL INTERESTED IN COMING?
AND I'M LIKE, ARE YOU KIDDING? >> I WAS GOING TO SAY, HOW LONG
DID YOU THINK ABOUT IT? >> ABOUT TWO SECONDS.
>> NOW, YOU DIDN'T GO RIGHT TO LONDON, YOU WENT TO COLORADO
SPRINGS FIRST, RIGHT? >> RIGHT, COLORADO SPRINGS, AND
THERE WE RAN A TWO-WEEK TRAINING CAMP TO BEGIN TO -- WELL,
THREE-WEEK TRAINING CAMP TO BEGIN TO GET THE ATHLETES
PREPARED TO GO OVER AND FIGHT ON THE BIGGEST STAGE IN THE WORLD.
>> YEAH, IT'S AWESOME. BUT WHAT DO YOU MEAN -- THEY
HAVE BEEN -- YOU HAVE BEEN BOXING FOR HOW LONG NOW?
>> FIVE YEARS. >> SO MOST OF THE GUYS, WOMEN
YOU WORKED WITH BEEN IN THE SAME BOAT, RIGHT, SINCE THEY WERE
LITTLE GUYS? >> YES, BUT THERE, YOUR
AVERAGE -- YOUR AVERAGE OLYMPIANS USUALLY BEEN BOXING
FOR 12 YEARS OR MORE. >> WHOA!
>> IT TAKES THAT LONG TO GET TO THAT LEVEL, EXCEPT THE YOUNG
LADY THAT WON THE GOLD WASN'T BOXING THAT LONG.
>> REALLY? >> YES.
>> SHE WAS JUST FLEET OF FOOT, FAST OF HAND, OR WHAT?
>> SHE IS JUST -- SHE'S A LITTLE BIT OF A BEAST WHEN IT COMES
TO -- SHE DOES THAT HULK HOGAN TRANSFORMATION IN THE RING.
>> ARE WE TALKING -- >> YES, WE'RE TALKING THAT YOUNG
LADY WITH THE GREAT SMILE. >> SHE'S GOT -- AND BROKEN
THUMBS. >> NO, NO, THOSE ARE HAND WRAPS.
NO BROKEN THUMBS. >> I THOUGHT MAYBE YOU HAD TO
TEACH HER SOMETHING. >> NO.
>> SHE HAS LONG ARMS. >> YES, SHE DOES.
>> THAT HELPS? >> WELL, IT HELPS, BUT YOU CAN
DO IT WITH SHORT ARMS TOO. >> OKAY, PULL YOUR ARMS OUT.
COME ON. >> HE'S A LITTLE SHORT, BUT HE'S
STILL GROWING. >> HE HAS FOUR YEARS.
>> STILL GROWING. >> YOU GOING TO RIO?
>> YES. >> ARE YOU.
>> YES? >> YOU'RE GOING TO HOLD THAT
FLAG TOO. >> YES.
>> YOU'RE A PROUD COACH. IS THAT LIKE A PROUD MAMA?
>> THE FACT THAT -- NOT ONLY THE FACT I WENT THERE AND COACHED
AND MADE HISTORY ON A NUMBER OF LEVELS, BUT THE FACT THAT I
COACHED THE ONLY GOLD MEDAL TO BE WON BY THE USA TEAM.
>> THAT WAS SO COOL. >> AND THAT IT WAS A FEMALE.
>> AND IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE -- WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME
WE GOT -- YOU LIKE THAT? WE GOT A GOLD?
>> YES. >> SORRY ABOUT THAT.
I SPARRED HER, DID I TELL YOU THAT?
WE SPARRED, ABOUT 30 SECONDS. HAVE YOU SPARRED WITH HER?
>> NO. >> YOU HAVEN'T SPARRED WITH HER?
>> NEVER. >> SHE'S TOUGH.
ASK THE GAL THAT GOT THE GOLD. SO IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE
THE GOLD CAME. >> YES.
>> WHAT WERE YOU DOING WHEN SHE GOT HER GOLD?
>> I WAS IN THE CORNER. I WAS THE ONE THAT WAS GIVING
HER THE INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKING SURE I PUT HER IN POSITION TO
WIN THAT GOLD. >> OKAY.
SO WHAT WERE YOU YELLING AT HER? >> WELL, AFTER THE FIRST ROUND,
WE WERE TIED 2-2, AND -- >> WAIT A MINUTE.
WE? >> YES, IT WAS.
>> SHE WAS THE ONE DOING THE -- >> SHE WAS THE ONE DOING THE
BOXING, BUT WHEN YOU'RE COACHING, YOU SEE IT FROM THE
PERSPECTIVE OF ONE AND I'M LOOKING AT IT AND SAYING, OKAY,
IT'S A 2-2 TIE. THAT'S NOT GOOD.
WE NEED TO PUT OURSELVES IN POSITION TO WIN.
SO BASICALLY WHAT I TOLD HER, BECAUSE HER OPPONENT USED THE
JAB TO PAW WITH, SO IT WASN'T STRONG.
>> WAIT A MINUTE. THE JAB?
>> THE JAB, WHICH IS HER LEFT HAND.
SHE WAS PAWING WITH IT, WHICH MEANT THAT IT WASN'T STRONG, IT
WASN'T ANYTHING THAT COULD DO A LOT OF DAMAGE.
SO WHAT I TOLD HER WAS TO COME OVER HER JAB WITH A RIGHT HAND
HOOK, BUT I NEEDED HER TO STEP TO THE RIGHT.
STEP TO THE RIGHT. >> SO IF YOU HEARD HER SAY THAT,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO? >> WHAT SHE SAID.
>> YES. STEP TO THE RIGHT.
>> YES. >> ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT?
>> YES. >> I'D BE OUT OF THE PLACE.
SO SHE LISTEN TO YOU? >> YES, I TOLD HER STEP TO THE
RIGHT, COME OVER HER JAB WITH A RIGHT HAND HOOK AND CONTINUE TO
THE RIGHT SO WE WOULD MAKE HER FEET UP AND TURN.
ONCE WE DID THAT, SHE HAS NO BALANCE.
>> THE OTHER GUY YOU MEAN? >> HER OPPONENT WHO WAS FROM
RUSSIA. AND SO SHE DID EXACTLY WHAT I
TOLD HER. WE STARTED TO RUN UP THE SCORE,
YOU KNOW, AND AT THAT POINT, I TOLD HER, IF SHE RAN THE SCORE
UP, IF SHE COULD GET A HIGH ENOUGH SCORE, I WOULD LET HER GO
IN THE THIRD ROUND. WHICH MEANT THAT I WOULD LET HER
DO WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO. SHE HAD TO DO WHAT I TOLD HER TO
DO IN ORDER TO DO WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO.
SHE LIKES TO COME STRAIGHT AT YOU AND BANG.
>> THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BE A BANG.
OKAY, NOW, WHAT -- THE DYNAMICS, SHE'S HAD A COACH FOR LIFE, TOO?
>> YES. SHE'S FROM FLINT, MICHIGAN, AND
SHE HAS A COACH. >> YOU DIDN'T MENTION THAT.
>> YES. >> SO HULK, FLINT, MICHIGAN.
SHE GOT AN ATTITUDE? >> YEAH, BUT SHE'S A BABY.
SHE'S STILL LEARNING. SHE ONLY HAS AN ATTITUDE IN THE
RING WHEN SHE'S BOXING. >> SO CALL HER YOUR BABY IN THE
RING MAY HAVE HELPED A LITTLE BIT?
>> YEAH, MAYBE. >> NOW, SO HOW DOES HER COACH
THAT SHE'S HAD FOR A LONG TIME DEAL WITH YOU THEN?
>> THE SAME AS ANY COACH WOULD. IF KEYSHAWN MADE THE --
>> WHEN HE MAKES THE OLYMPICS. >> WHEN HE MAKE THE OLYMPIC TEAM
AND IT'S TIME FOR HIM TO GO, YES, I'M GOING TO TURN HIM OVER
TO THE NATIONAL COACHES BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONES THAT HAVE TO
TAKE HIM AND GET HIM TO THE PODIUM, BUT I'M GOING TO DO --
I'M GOING TO GIVE HIM ALL THE SKILLS AND EVERYTHING HE NEEDS
TO MAKE IT TO THAT PODIUM AND WIN.
AND BECAUSE I'M AN INTERNATIONAL-LEVEL COACH, I
HAVE AN ADVANTAGE OVER A LOT OF COACHES WHO DON'T HAVE THAT
EXPERIENCE. >> GOTCHA.
>> I'M ABLE TO BETTER PREPARE HIM, SO BY THE TIME THE NATIONAL
COACHES GET HIM, HE WILL ALREADY HAVE ALL THOSE SKILLS.
HE WILL ALREADY BE ABLE TO DO PRETTY MUCH 99% OF THE THINGS
THEY NEED HIM TO DO TO WIN. >> I GOT ONE MORE REALLY
IMPORTANT QUESTION. HOW WAS THE FOOD?
>> THE FOOD WAS GREAT. >> REALLY?
>> THE FOOD WAS GREAT. THE ATMOSPHERE WAS GREAT.
YOU KNOW, I TELL PEOPLE, WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GO -- THINK ABOUT
THIS. YOU GO ONE PLACE, OKAY?
AND THE WHOLE WORLD COMES TO YOU.
>> YEAH. >> THE ENTIRE WORLD WAS AT THE
OLYMPIC VILLAGE, SO I WAS ABLE TO TOUCH THE WORLD BY BEING IN
ONE PLACE. >> THAT'S AWESOME.
OKAY, NOW, WHILE YOU WERE OVER THERE, THOUGH, BOB COSTAS WAS
WHINING ABOUT NO AIR CONDITIONING?
>> YES. >> NO AIR CONDITIONING?
>> NO, THERE'S NO AIR CONDITIONING IN THE OLYMPIC
VILLAGE. >> OKAY.
NOW, I SEE SOME -- TWO MEAN-LOOKING GUYS HERE.
WHILE YOU'RE OUT PLAYING AROUND IN LONDON, WHAT WERE YOU DOING?
>> I WAS OUT IN KANSAS CITY FOR A TOURNAMENT, AN INSIDE
TOURNAMENT IN KANSAS CITY. >> YOU WERE OVER THERE WINNING,
WEREN'T YOU. >> YES.
>> SHOWS SUCKERS ARE BIGGER THAN YOU.
WHICH ONE'S YOURS? >> BOTH OF THEM.
>> BOTH OF THEM ARE YOURS? >> YEAH.
>> I GOT A QUESTION TO ASK YOU BECAUSE RIGHT AFTER YOU GOT BACK
FROM KANSAS CITY, THE GAL THAT DROVE YOU OUT THERE WAS ON THE
SHOW. YOUR FEET REALLY SMELL THAT BAD?
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID. 18 HOURS IN THE VAN.
SO YOU WIN THAT, HUH? >> YES.
>> I GOT TO BE NICE TO HIM BECAUSE HE'S GOING TO BE AN
OLYMPIC WINNER. WHAT'S THIS RIBBON HERE?
>> THAT'S FROM PALS FROM OHIO. >> ALL RIGHT.
SO WHEN YOU GET IN THE RING, DO YOU HAVE HER TALKING IN YOUR
BACK TOO? >> YES.
>> DO YOU LISTEN TO HER? >> YES.
>> WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T? >> I HAVE A -- I PROBABLY LOSE.
>> YOU PROBABLY LOSE AND YOU HAVE A TOUGH PRACTICE AFTER,
RIGHT? >> A TOUGH RIGHT HOME.
>> IS IT -- >> A TOUGH RIGHT HOME.
>> BUT I SEE A LOT OF LOVE AND PRIDE IN YOUR SMILE AND YOUR
EYES. THE KIDS THAT YOU TRAIN --
>> OH, YEAH. >> COME ON, LET'S TALK ABOUT
THAT. >> LISTEN, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE WERE
SAYING TO ME, OH, MAN, MUST HAVE BEEN GREAT, YOU'RE IN THE
OLYMPICS, THAT'S ALL YOU THOUGHT ABOUT.
WELL, YEAH, IT WAS GREAT AND I LOVED IT, BUT I ALSO MISSED MY
KIDS AND I MISSED BEING HOME WITH THEM, AND I MISSED -- I
REALLY MISSED BEING AT RINGSIDE WITH THEM BECAUSE IT'S -- IT'S A
LABOR OF LOVE, YOU KNOW. I MEAN, YES, ALL MY KIDS HAVE
PARENTS AND STUFF LIKE THAT, BUT I KIND OF FEEL LIKE THEY'RE MY
KIDS TOO AND I KIND OF SHARE THEM WITH THE PARENTS.
EVERYTHING FROM DISCIPLINE RIGHT ON UP TO I'M PROUD OF YOU WHEN
YOU DO THOSE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT, WHETHER IT'S, YOU
KNOW, GETTING GOOD GRADES IN SCHOOL, YOU KNOW, OR YOU'VE DONE
SOMETHING SPECIAL AT SCHOOL OR, YOU KNOW, YOU'VE DONE SOME
SPECIAL THINGS. HE'S AN EXCELLENT ATHLETE AND
HE'S A GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYER. I REALLY THIS YEAR, I WANT TO
GET TO SEE SOME OF HIS FOOTBALL GAMES.
I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET THERE YET, BUT I WANT TO GO SEE HIM
PLAY FOOTBALL AS WELL BECAUSE I KNOW THAT'S ONE OF HIS LOVES.
>> I GOT TO TELL YOU, I'VE NEVER BEEN SO PROUD AS THE NIGHT WHEN
I HAD TO HEAR FROM BOB COSTAS THAT SHE ONE AND I -- SHE WON
AND I CAME INTO THE OFFICE AND SAID YOU KNOW WHAT?
I SCARED HER, SHE HAD TO TAKE HER GLASSES OFF.
AND THEN THEY TOLD ME, THEY'RE USING THE B ROLL OF YOU FIGHTING
RATHER THAN ME SPARRING WITH YOU.
>> IS THAT WHAT THEY'RE SHOWING? >> YES, MY STUFF ENDED ON THE
FLOOR. BUT I'M SO PROUD TO BE A
NORFOLKIAN TO SAY I KNOW YOU AND I'M GOING TO BE FEELING THE SAME
WAY IN FOUR YEARS WHEN YOU GO TO RIO.
>> WE'LL BE BACK. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO INTERVIEW
HIM. >> I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.
THANKS A LOT. THANKS FOR JOINING US.
IT'S A GREAT TIME TO BE HERE. THANK YOU.
