DISTINGUISHED VISITORS HAD A CHANCE TO EMBARK ON BOARD THE PEARL HARBOR-BASED ATTACK SUBMARINE
USS COLUMBUS.
"I'M FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN HAWAII AND OUR SCHOOL ARMY LIAISON OFFICER, OUR SCHOOL
LIAISON OFFICER, INVITED US TO BE A PART OF TODAY'S TOUR."
LOCAL EDUCATORS GOT A CHANCE TO PULL ALONGSIDE THE SUBMARINE AND BOARD IT IN PEARL HARBOR.
THE VISITORS MET THE CREW AND GOT TO OBSERVE THE DAILY FUNCTIONS ON BOARD."
"EVERY TIME YOU TALK TO SOMEBODY WHO'S IN THE NAVY, OR IN THE ARMY, OR WHICHEVER ARMED
SERVICE YOU'RE REALLY DEALING WITH, YOU'RE DEALING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE
OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND IT IS ALWAYS SO IMPRESSIVE."
"THE TOUR THAT WE HAVE TODAY IS KIND OF AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE COLUMBUS TO REACH OUT
TO THE COMMUNITY AND BRING SOME OF THE TEACHERS FROM THE LOCAL AREA SO THEY COULD FIRST HAND
SEE WHAT WE DO HERE ABOARD THIS __ CLASS SUBMARINE. OBVIOUSLY WE SHOW THEM THE CONTROL ROOM. WE
SHOW ALL THE OPERATIONS THAT GO ON THERE. IT'S A VERY HECTIC PLACE. THERE'S A LOT OF
THINGS GOING ON. THAT'S THE MAIN HUB OF ALL THE OPERATIONS ABOARD THE SHIP. AND FROM THEN
ON WE SHOW SOME OF THE AUXILIARY SPACES, MACHINE ROOM AND THE TORPEDO ROOM WHERE WE FACILITATE
SOME OF OUR OTHER FUNCTIONS. AND THEN SOME OF THE CREW AREAS LIKE THE CREW'S MESS, WARDROOM
AND THE BERTHING AREA, SUCH AS WE'RE STANDING IN NOW, TO ILLUSTRATE HOW LIFE FLOWS ABOARD
SHIP."
BY THE END OF THE DAY, THE VISITORS LEFT WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION FOR
THE LIFE ABOARD THE SUBMARINE. REPORTING FROM JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, I'M SEAMAN
DIANA QUINLAN.
