MALE SPEAKER: Watsky behind the scenes.
Take one, marker.
FEMALE SPEAKER: So tell me about your
friendship in the story.
And kind of what your relationship is.
GEORGE WATSKY: So in the context of the story, Kurt is
my producer and collaborator.
He is kind of the musical savant.
I guess we didn't really explicitly say it in the
script, but the idea is that he works at some bigger
studio, and he's got a job in the music industry somewhere,
but his goal is to be a producer.
HASAN MINHAJ: I've gotta take the pop screen.
GEORGE WATSKY: You're taking the pop screen?
HASAN MINHAJ: Dude, we don't have one at the studio.
This is from the studio.
GEORGE WATSKY: I literally know how to use
none of this equipment.
HASAN MINHAJ: I'm sorry, man.
I did everything I could.
I'm like his friend, and I go, I'm his personal volunteer DJ,
so to speak.
So I go to his show at SF State.
Show being singular.
GEORGE WATSKY: Yeah.
HASAN MINHAJ: And I help him out in front of a dismal
crowd, and stuff like that.
I just kind of help navigate him through the ups and downs
of the music industry.
Sometimes he doesn't listen.
Sometimes he does.
GEORGE WATSKY: Yeah.
HASAN MINHAJ: Actually, most of the time he doesn't listen.
GEORGE WATSKY: When you're a DIY artist, you have to lean
on your friends for favors and support.
And unfortunately, I don't think my character really
offers much of anything in the way to Kurt in terms of the
kind of support that I need.
But I'm very grateful for that.
HASAN MINHAJ: Yeah, I feel like Watsky's not bringing a
lot to the friendship relationship.
GEORGE WATSKY: Really, it's not symbiotic.
HASAN MINHAJ: I feel like Kurt's doing a lot of the
heavy lifting, and Watsky--
GEORGE WATSKY: I'm the little fish that's clamped onto the
shark, speeding through the water.
HASAN MINHAJ: Yeah.
GEORGE WATSKY: Yeah.
HASAN MINHAJ: Look, I got three emails from my boss.
I got to go.
I'm gonna get fired.
GEORGE WATSKY: Oh my god.
HASAN MINHAJ: Dude, I've helped as
much as I could, man.
Seriously, I have.
GEORGE WATSKY: I hate to say it, but you're actually kind
of Chet Huntering me right now.
HASAN MINHAJ: Don't put that on my conscience, man.
FEMALE SPEAKER: How do you feel about that, Hasan?
I don't like it, because there's two types of people in
relationships, and yes, I've read this.
GEORGE WATSKY: Yeah.
HASAN MINHAJ: In an issue of Cosmo.
There are those--
don't you dare laugh--
there are those who are loved, or those who desire love, and
those who want to love others.
And I feel like Kurt just spends his whole time loving
this other.
GEORGE WATSKY: Yeah.
I'm very needy.
HASAN MINHAJ: And it's not reciprocated.
