Transcript:
--> HI, I'M MATT OLIEN.
--> I'M TONY TILTON, WE'RE MEMBERS OF THE 2010 FARGO FILM
FESTIVAL COMMITTEE.
WELCOME TO THE 2010 FARGO FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW SHOW.
HERE'S AN INSIDE LOOK AT THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL.
--> THIS YEAR'S 10th ANNUAL FARGO FILM FESTIVAL WILL TAKE
PLACE TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, MARCH 2nd THROUGH THE 6th.
THIS YEAR WE HAD 130 ENTRIES FROM 17 DIFFERENT STATES AND
12 FOREIGN COUNTRIES.
THE FARGO FILM FESTIVAL IS COMMITTED TO SHOWCASING HIGH
QUALITY, INDEPENDENT FILMS AND GIVING OPPORTUNITIES TO
FILMMAKERS TO SHOW THEIR WORK IN THE STATE OF THE ART AND
HISTORIC FARGO THEATRE, AS WELL AS THE BRAND NEW SECOND
SCREEN NEXT DOOR TO THE MAIN THEATRE CALLED FARGO THEATRE
OFF BROADWAY.
FILMS WILL BE SHOWN IN EIGHT CATEGORIES.
NARRATIVE FEATURE, NARRATIVE SHORT, DOCUMENTARY FEATURE,
DOCUMENTARY SHORT, EXPERIMENTAL, ANIMATION,
STUDENT, AND INDIGENOUS VOICES.
THE FESTIVAL ALSO CONTAINS INFORMINGAL SEMINARS,
NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES, AND PROVOCATIVE PANEL DISCUSSIONS
FEATURING FILMMAKERS, FILM ACADEMICS, AND PEOPLE IN THE
FILM INDUSTRY.
--> MORE THAN ANYTHING THE FESTIVAL IS ABOUT MOVIES.
MOVIES THAT ENTERTAIN AND INFORM.
MOVIES THAT SPARK DISCUSSION AND DEBATE.
THE VENUES FOR THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL ARE THE BEAUTIFUL,
HISTORIC FARGO THEATRE, OUR MAIN VENUE, AND OUR SECOND
VENUE WILL BE THE BRAND NEW SECOND SCREEN FARGO THEATRE
OFF BROADWAY.
LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL FARGO THEATRE IN
DOWNTOWN FARGO.
--> OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS, THE FARGO THEATRE'S EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR, MARGIE BAILLY ALONG WITH MEMBERS OF THE VARIOUS
COMMITTEES HAVE BEEN COMMITTED TO EXPANDING THE AUDIENCE OF
THE FESTIVAL.
THE FESTIVAL OPENS TUESDAY NIGHT, MARCH 2nd WITH A
SPECIAL SCREENING OF TWO INVITED FILMS, "IMBUED", AND
INTO TEMPTATION, DIRECTED BY PATRICK COYLE FROM THE TWIN
CITIES, WHICH HAS RECEIVED RAVE REVIEWS AND INCLUDES NAME
ACTORS IN THE CAST LIKE KRISTIN CHENOWETH.
THE KICKOFF PRESS CONFERENCE HELD EARLIER IN THE DAY,
TUESDAY, MARCH 2nd AT NOON.
--> THERE WILL BE LUNCH PANEL DISCUSSIONS WEDNESDAY,
THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, AT 300 BROADWAY IN DOWNTOWN
FARGO.
ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT AROUND 10:00 P.M. ALL A
SCREENINGS ARE DONE, THE GATHERING PLACE FOR
POST-PARTIES FEATURING BEVERAGES WILL BE AT ECCE IN
DOWNTOWN FARGO.
NEXT TO THE FARGO THEATRE. BEFORE THE NIGHT SCREENINGS
EACH DAY THERE ARE PRE-PARTIES AT VARIOUS DOWNTOWN LOCATIONS
STARTING AT 5:00 P.M.
THESE LOCATIONS WILL BE MONTE'S ON TUESDAY NIGHT,
FOLLOWED BY THE PLAINS ART MUSEUM ON WEDNESDAY, JOHN
ALEXANDER'S ON THURSDAY, THE SILVER MOON ON FRIDAY, AND THE
HOTEL DONALDSON ON SATURDAY NIGHT.
--> TONY, TEN YEARS. I CANNOT BELIEVE IT.
YOU AND I WERE INVOLVED IN THE FIRST YEAR.
--> VERY FIRST.
--> WE BARELY HAD ENOUGH FILMS TO FILL A FESTIVAL, BUT TALK
ABOUT THE GROWTH WE'VE HAD IN TEN YEARS.
--> LIKE YOU SAID, THE FIRST YEAR OR TWO WE WERE TRYING TO
FILL A SCHEDULE.
NOW WE ARE AT THE POINT WHERE A THIRD OF THE FILMS SUBMITTED
ARE WHAT IS BEING SHOWN.
AND WE'RE PURPOSELY TRYING TO REPEAT SHOWINGS ON SOME OF
THESE FILMS.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE HAD IN THE PAST.
LAST YEAR ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ONLY HAD ONE VENUE AVAILABLE,
WE COULD ONLY SHOW A LOT OF FILMS ONCE.
SO AT LEAST PEOPLE CAN COME BACK AND SEE IT IF THEY DON'T
GET IT THE INITIAL TIME.
TEN YEARS, IT'S BEEN A VERY BUSY, STRANGE JOURNEY.
IN SOME WAYS.
BUT ANYONE THAT WANTS TO THROW US A COMMENT OR TWO, WE'RE
ALWAYS WILLING TO LISTEN TO THAT.
--> I THINK WHAT'S GOING TO BE GREAT THIS YEAR IS WE ARE
SITTING, IF YOU'VE WATCHED OUR SHOW IN THE PAST, WE'VE
USUALLY BEEN IN THE MAIN VENUE, WE'RE IN THE SECOND SCREEN
RIGHT NOW.
THIS WAS SCAFFOLDING LAST YEAR.
--> EXACTLY.
--> WE TOOK OUR PICTURE WITH THE SCAFFOLDING
--> RIGHT.
AND YOU'RE SEEING VIDEO OF THIS SECOND SCREEN, SECOND
SPACE RIGHT NOW AS I'M TALKING, BUT THIS IS JUST SUCH AN
INTIMATE VENUE.
I'VE HAD SO MANY PEOPLE COMMENT THAT THEY LOVE
WATCHING MOVIES IN HERE.
ALMOST LIKE YOU ARE A FILM REVIEWER GETTING A SPECIAL SCREENING.
--> RIGHT.
--> AGAIN, THIS WILL ALLOW US TO HAVE MORE PRODUCT, SCREEN
THINGS A COUPLE OF TIMES.
--> RIGHT.
--> AND JUST THIS ADDS SO MUCH. MARGIE'S DREAM OF GETTING THE
SECOND SCREEN REALIZED.
--> IT IS A BEAUTIFUL SETTING, AND IT EVOKES THE STYLE OF THE
ORIGINAL FARGO THEATRE.
THAT'S ONE THING WITH THE FESTIVAL THIS YEAR, ASIDE FROM
OUR PRE-PARTIES, AND SOME THINGS AT ECCE A FEW DOORS
DOWN, EVERYTHING IS PRETTY WELL CONTAINED IN ONE LOCATION.
SO YOU CAN EASILY COME DOWN AND PARK AND HAVE A GOOD TIME
ALL AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
--> ONCE AGAIN, WINNING FILM FILMMAKERS WILL BE HERE, AGAIN,
WE'LL HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO GET YOUR TICKETS AT THE
END OF THE SHOW TO COME, BUT THERE'S ALWAYS FILMMAKERS TO
MEET FROM CALIFORNIA, NEW YORK, AROUND THE WORLD, IN FACT, OUR
NARRATIVE FEATURE WINNER IS FROM OIND YA THIS YEAR.
WE'RE -- INDIA THIS YEAR. WE'RE HOPING HE CAN ATTEND.
THE QUALITY CONTINUES TO GET BETTER.
ESPECIALLY IN STUDENT, EXPERIMENTAL AND ANIMATION,
WE'VE REALLY SEEN THE GROWTH THERE
--> THIS YEAR WE'VE REALLY SEEN A HUGE GROWTH IN ALL THOSE.
I THINK IN EVERY CATEGORY. BUT I WOULD SAY THIS IS OUR
BEST YEAR WE'VE HAD FOR STUDENT CATEGORY.
--> I THINK SO.
--> WE HAVE A LOT OF LOCAL TALENT REPRESENTED IN THE
FESTIVAL, WITH I IS FANTASTIC, BUT ALSO -- WHICH IS FAN TASTE
PARTICULAR, ALSO FROM MAJOR FILM SCHOOLS.
--> SOUTHERN CAL, FLORIDA STATE.
--> IT IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS, LAST YEAR WE STARTED SEEING
MORE OF THAT.
THIS YEAR WE'VE SEEN A LOT MORE OF IT.
IT IS EXCITING.
LIKE YOU SAID, MEETING WITH THE FILMMAKERS AND PEOPLE
INVOLVED, CAST MEMBERS, AND THERE WILL BE ACTORS,
ACTRESSES, PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS HERE, AND IT IS
ALWAYS INTERESTING TO TALK TO THOSE PEOPLE AND FIND OUT HOW
THE PROCESS OCCURRED.
BECAUSE EVERY STORY IS DIFFERENT.
NO ONE HAS THE EXACT SAME STORY.
THESE FILMS ARE GENERALLY, THEY ARE NOT SUBSIDIZED BY
STUDIOS, THEY ARE GETTING THEIR FUNDING FROM THEIR
PARENTS, YOU KNOW, SELLING THEIR CAR OR DONATING BLOOD OR
SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
SO THEY ARE GREAT STORIES TO LISTEN TO.
YOU SEE WHAT THEY DO WITH THEIR WORK, AND IT IS A LOT OF
FUN TO HAVE THEM HERE AND HONOR THEM FOR THEIR WORK.
--> UM-HUM.
LET'S GET CRACKING HERE.
LET'S GET RIGHT TO THE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE CATEGORY,
WHICH IS ALWAYS VERY STRONG, AND WE HAVE A FILM THIS YEAR
THAT WON CALLED "UNDER OUR SKIN" AND THIS IS DIRECTED BY
ANDY ABRAHAMS WILSON FROM SAUSALITO, CALIFORNIA.
THIS WAS A FINALIST, TOP 15 FINALIST FOR THE ACADEMY AWARD
DOC FEATURE.
IT DIDN'T MAKE THE FINAL FIVE, BUT --
--> SHOWINGS YOU THE QUALITY.
--> TO GET TO THE TOP 15, IT BEAT OUT MICHAEL MOORE'S FILM,
AND "IT MIGHT GET LOUD" WHICH PLAYED AT THE THEATRE.
IT HAS TO DO WITH LYME DISEASE, AND ITS A VERY DIFFICULT
DISEASE TO DIAGNOSE.
AND APPARENTLY THE FILM DEALS WITH KIND OF THE USE OF
ANTIBIOTICS, AND A LOT OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE HAD REAL
STRUGGLES GETTING THIS DIAGNOSED, SO I THINK IT IS
GOING TO BE A VERY INTERESTING -- DOC FEATURES
ALWAYS STRONG.
--> ALWAYS A VERY STRONG CATEGORY.
EXCELLENT WORK.
AND LIKE YOU SAID, THIS ONE IS EXEMPLARY, BEING A FINALIST
FOR THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS.
AND WE HAVE A COUPLE OTHER FILMS OF THAT CALIBER IN THIS
FESTIVAL AS WELL.
--> RIGHT.
--> IT IS NOT -- YOU KNOW, I DON'T WANT TO PUT THAT DOWN,
IT IS NOT A LOCAL FILM, BUT WE HAVE SOME INCREDIBLE LOCAL FILMS.
BUT WE REALLY HAVE SOME TOP NOTCH THINGS COMING TO THE FESTIVAL.
THIS IS ONE OF THEM.
--> LET'S LOOK AT THE CLIP FROM THE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE WINNER
FOR 2010, "UNDER OUR SKIN."
--> HOW YOU DOING?
--> NOT GOOD.
--> WE'RE OPTIMISTIC THAT MANDY WILL STEADILY IMPROVE, I'M
SKEPTICAL IT WILL BE SMOOTH SAILING.
SHE IS SO FRAGILE, AND HER CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM IS SO
IRRITABLE, IT DOESN'T TAKE A LOT TO SET HER OFF.
--> WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THE BEST WAY TO TREAT YOU
INTERMITTENTLY TO GET YOU TO THE BEST PLACE SO YOUR IMMUNE
SYSTEM IS MORE IN CHARGE.
--> UM-HUM.
--> UM, SO.
THAT'S A TRICKY BUSINESS.
--> HE SAID WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO DO SIX TO EIGHT MONTHS OF
ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY.
WE'LL HAVE TO PUT A CATHETER IN, YOU KNOW, TO YOUR
CONVENIENT A CAVE A, YOU'LL PROBABLY GET -- VENA
CAVAULTIMATE YOU' PROBABLY GET WORSE.
I SAID LIKE WORSE YOU MEAN EMERGENCY ROOM WORSE?
AND HE SAID YEAH.
--> LET'S JUST DO ONE AT A TIME.
LET'S DO THIS ONE. HERE ARE YOUR SUPPLEMENTS.
THESE ARE ALL FINE. WHAT I SENSE IS THAT WE'RE AT
THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BE HUGE, JUST
LIKE I HAD THAT FEELING IN 20 SOME YEARS AGO WITH HIV.
I HAVE BEEN SEEING PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, THEY ARE
SICK, THEY'VE GOT A COMPLEX ILLNESS, BEING IGNORED.
--> IT IS GOING TO BE AN EXPLOSIVE AREA OF MEDICINE.
WE ARE GOING TO LEARN A LOT ABOUT CHRONIC ILLNESS.
I THINK THAT'S GOING TO HELP HEALTHCARE IN GENERAL
TREMENDOUSLY.
--> LET'S MOVE ON TO NARRATIVE FEATURE, ALWAYS A STRONG CATEGORY.
I WAS THE CHAIR OF THIS COMMITTEE THIS YEAR, AND IT
WAS A STRONGER YEAR, I THINK, THAN IT WAS LAST YEAR, WHICH
WAS GOOD.
OUR WINNING FILM, "TAHAAN" OUT OF INDIA, BY SANTOSH SIVAN.
INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, TONY, WE HAD TWO FILMS IN THIS CATEGORY
THAT FOLLOWED KIND OF LIFE THROUGH THE EYES OF A YOUNG BOY.
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS IN INDIA, THE BOY IS VERY GOOD, HE'S A
NOMINEE FOR BEST OF SHOW, BEST ACTOR, WE HAD ANOTHER FILM
FILMED IN PERU THAT WAS KIND OF ABOUT THIS TRIBE AND SEEN
THROUGH THE EYES OF A YOUNG BOY.
WE HAD A COUPLE OTHER REAL GOOD FILMS THAT WILL BE
SCREENED CALLED "TAYLOR'S WAY" AND McCARTNEY'S JEANS" THOSE
ARE GOOD NARRATIVE FEATURES AS WELL.
ALWAYS A TOUGH CATEGORY. HARD TO DO A NARRATIVE FEATURE
ON A SMALL BUDGET.
--> IT IS VERY TOUGH. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE DOING
THEM WITH DIGITAL FILM MAKING TECHNIQUES RIGHT NOW.
BUT IT IS STILL WRITING, IT IS NOT NECESSARILY THE TECHNIQUES
AND THE TECHNICAL ASPECT, IT IS WRITING SOMETHING THAT WILL
LAST FOR 90 MINUTES OR LONGER, COHESIVE STORY AND MAKE IT WORK.
--> TOUGH TO DO.
TO SUSTAIN THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT.
SO ANYONE WHO CAN DO IT ON A SMALL BUDGET AS WELL, HATS OFF
TO THEM.
--> TO LET THE AUDIENCE IN ON A LITTLE NUTS AND BOLTS OF OUR
COMMITTEE WORK, SOMETIMES YOU AND I ARE BOTH IN ON NARRATIVE
FEATURE, YOU'LL WATCH A FILM, IT HITS THAT WALL.
IT HITS THAT WALL AT ABOUT 30 MINUTES WHERE HE -- THEY JUST
CANNOT SUSTAIN IT, AND THE LAST 40 MINUTES ARE
INTERMINABLE, HARD TO WORK.
--> MOST FILMS DON'T MAKE IT IN.
DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT TRYING, IT IS JUST HARD TO DO
--> IT IS HARD TO DO.
--> YOU KNOW, FRANKLY, SOMETIMES SOME OF THOSE FILMS
HAVE BEEN REEDITED AND LATER ON AND GREATLY IMPROVED.
SO IT IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. AND, YOU KNOW, HOLLYWOOD FILMS
DO THE SAME THING.
BUT THEY JUST KEEP IT IN HOUSE.
THEY'LL DO TEST SCREENING, THEN RESHOOT SOMETHING.
IT IS THE WAY IT HAPPENS.
AND THEN FOR A FILM SUBMITTING TO A FESTIVAL, IN ORDER TO GET
EXPOSURE FOR THEIR FILM, THAT'S OSTENSIBLY WHY A
FILMMAKER SENDS IT IN.
THAT HELPS THEM GET THE FILM BOUGHT FOR DISTRIBUTION.
SO WE'RE -- WE'VE GOT TO THE POINT, BEING A 10th YEAR
FESTIVAL, WE'RE ACTUALLY COMING UP IN THE FESTIVAL
WORLD AS WELL AS BEING A RESPECTED FESTIVAL THAT PEOPLE
SEND THINGS TO.
SO THIS YEAR WE'VE GOTTEN SOME JUST EXCELLENT WORK, AND, LIKE
YOU SAID, IT IS ONE OF THE TOP PIECES WE'VE HAD.
--> LET'S LOOK AT OUR WINNER FROM NARRATIVE FEATURE,
--> NOW WE GET TO THE NARRATIVE SHORT CATEGORY, WHICH IS
ALWAYS FUN.
AND THAT'S USUALLY A CATEGORY THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE KIND OF
START OFF WITH IN THEIR FILM MAKING CAREER, IF THEY ARE
MAKING NARRATIVE FILMS.
THEY DO A SHORT SUBJECT FILM. THEY ARE VERY DIFFICULT,
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET TO POINT, YOU HAVE TO DO IT WELL,
AND IN A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME, USUALLY UNDER 20 MINUTES.
15 TO 20.
--> LIKE UNDER 30 IS OUR RULE.
--> UNDER 30 IS THE RULE. BUT GENERALLY THEY ARE 15, 20,
SOMEWHERE IN THERE.
OUR WINNING FILM, AND WE HAD EXCELLENT FILMS, IT WAS KIND
OF TOUGH TO COME TO A CONCLUSION ON THIS ONE, AND
OUR JURYING PROCESS, WE WENT THROUGH VOTES AND DEBATES.
IT WAS A BIG PROCESS THAT GOES ON FOR THESE.
BUT OUR WINNING ONE WAS "TRUE BEAUTY THIS NIGHT" I DON'T
WANT TO GIVE IT UP IN THE LEAD-IN INTO IT.
I THINK PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THE FILM.
IT IS VERY UNEXPECTED THE WAY THIS FILM STARTS, AND IT IS
ABOUT A GUY WHO LIKES A GIRL, AND HE HAS AN UNCONVENTIONAL
WAY OF APPROACHING HER, LET'S JUST SAY IN A, AND SO -- SAY THAT.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A CLIP
--> EXCUSE ME.
GIVE ME THAT. PLEASE.
YOU CAN'T JUST DO THAT.
I WAS HERE FIRST.
WHO ARE YOU CALLING?
[ PHONE RINGING ]
--> HELLO?
--> HELLO ELISE?
I GOT A GUY HERE WHO NEEDS TO TALK TO YOU.
HE HAS NO MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES.
NICE TALKING TO YOU, ELISE
--> WHAT?
HELLO?
--> HELLO?
ELISE?
--> YES?
WHAT -- WHO THIS?
--> HI.
ELISE.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME.
--> ALL RIGHT.
ALL RIGHT, LISTEN --
--> I KNOW I SHOULDN'T BE CALLING YOU THIS SOON.
HE WANTED TO CALL TO SAY THAT LAST NIGHT WAS SPECIAL.
--> WHO THIS?
--> RHECHL HETT SUMMERS.
DID -- RHETT SUMMERS.
WE MET LAST NIGHT AT 5th STREET.
IT WAS SPECIAL.
--> IT'S YOU?
--> YEAH.
WELL, --
--> WOW.
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE CALLING ME.
--> I KNOW, I KNOW. I KNOW.
--> WE NOW MOVE TO STUDENT FILM CATEGORY, ALWAYS A FUN ONE
HERE, BECAUSE WE GET THE STUDENTS INVOLVED, MOORHEAD
STATE HAD SIX OR SEVEN THAT MADE IT INTO THE TOP 14 THAT
ARE BEING SCREENED, SO THAT'S EXCITING, BUT OUR WINNING FILM,
IN FACT I SHOULD MENTION WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE RUSTY
CASTLETON AWARD AGAIN.
RUSTY THE FORMER FILM STUDIES DIRECTOR AT MSUM WHO PASSED
AWAY IN 2007.
AWARDED TO AN MSUM STUDENT THIS YEAR.
WE WON'T GIVE THAT SURPRISE AWAY.
--> EXEMPLARY FILM.
IT ISN'T FOR JUST MSU STUDENTS, IT JUST THAT HAPPENED THAT
THIS FILM MET THAT CRITERIA.
--> OUR WINNING FILM IS FROM ELI AKIRA KAUFMAN, FROM VENICE,
CALIFORNIA, AND IT IS CALLED "CALIFORNIA KING" IN FACT, ELI
HAD THE HONORABLE MENTION WINNER, WINNING THE PIECE
ALONG WITH A LOCAL FILM BY TONY GROVES, A HIGH SCHOOL KID,
GOT HONORABLE MENTION.
--> OUTSTANDING FILM AS WELL.
--> WE'RE PLEASED TO TAKE IN
THAT FILM, CALLED "MAY I TAKE YOUR ORDER."
--> YEAH.
--> THE CLIP WE'RE GOING TO WATCH FROM ELI'S FILM
"CALIFORNIA KING" HE DID TWO FILMS, ONE ON THE IRAQ WAR,
BUT CALIFORNIA KING HE HAS THAT ROMANTIC COMEDY --
--> THAT'S ANOTHER ONE
--> HE PULLS IT OFF WITH THIS GUY WHO SELLS MATTRESSES.
--> I WOULD LOVE TO SEE ELI KICK OFF A CAREER IN HOLLYWOOD
AND TAKE THE SENSIBILITY TO A HOLLYWOOD FILM.
FOR THOSE OF YOU -- I DON'T WANT TO HARP ON ROMANTIC COME
DIGS, BUT NOT ONE OF MY FAVORITE GENRES.
--> THEY ARE HARD TO PLAY OUT.
--> VERY DIFFICULT.
THIS ONE WAS BEAUTIFULLY DONE. AND THE ACTING IS SUBTLE, AND
WELL DONE, THE SCRIPT IS VERY SHARP, AND IT IS VERY SWEET
AND ENDEARING FILM, AND MOREOVER, THIS FILM LOOKS LIKE
A PROFESSIONAL COMPANY SHOT IT.
AND IT JUST SHOWS YOU WHAT A STUDENT CAN DO, GIVEN HE HAD
RESOURCES, OBVIOUSLY, BUT STILL, YOU HAVE TO HAVE TALENT.
--> TO PULL IT OFF.
--> PLENTY OF FILMS WERE SHOT ON 35mm WITH ALL THE
PRODUCTION VALUE, BUT THEY WEREN'T WATCHABLE FILMS.
THIS IS A VERY WATCHABLE FILM. BOTH OF HIS FILMS WERE.
AND WON OUR BEST OF SHOW FOR THE STUDENT CATEGORY.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT ELI'S FILM, "CALIFORNIA KING."
--> OH!
--> HOW DOES THAT ONE FEEL?
--> TOO SOFT.
--> TRY THE NEXT ONE.
--> TOO BOUNCEY.
--> UM-HUM.
[ LAUGHING ]
--> HOW'S THAT FEEL?
--> PRETTY GOOD.
--> YOU WANT TO KNOW THE SECRET OF A GOOD MATTRESS?
--> SURE.
--> A GOOD BED DOESN'T ABSORB ENERGY, IT RESTORES IT.
--> LET'S MOVE ON TO DOCUMENTARY SHORT.
THESE ARE DOCUMENTARIES 30 MINUTES OR LESS.
WE HAVE ANOTHER GOODWINNER THIS YEAR, TONY.
--> YEAH.
"TRIP TO HELL AND BACK" BY STU MADDUX OUT OF CALIFORNIA.
IT IS A VERY SUSPENSEFUL FILM, WHICH THE JURY WASN'T EXPECTING.
THIS WAS THEIR OVERWHELMING CHOICE FOR BEST FILM OUT OF
DOC SHORT CATEGORY. ABOUT A GUY WHO, HE IS AN EE
QUESTIONS TREE JAN, -- EQUESTRIAN, LIKE A MASTER, BUT
AT ONE POINT HE BECAME A METH ADDICT, AND SO HIS LIFE
SPIRALS OUT OF CONTROL, AND THEY HAVE SOME GREAT
INTERVIEWS, VERY CANDID INTERVIEWS, GOOD PRODUCTION VALUES.
SO, AGAIN, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT OUR OVERWHELMING JURY
CHOICE FOR BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT, "TRIP TO HELL AND BACK."
--> FRIEND OF MINE, WHO I SOLD TO WAS TO TAKE ME TO HIS HOUSE.
HE APOLOGIZED, HE WAS HAVING A FIGHT WITH HIS BOYFRIEND,
WOULD I MIND STAYING IN A HOTEL, HE HAD MADE
RESERVATIONS AT.
HE SAID BRING YOUR LUGGAGE IN, I WASN'T IN THERE TEN SECONDS,
AND IT BECAME LIKE FUNNY FBI, CAME ON TO ME LIKE THAT, AND
IN THAT SECOND MY WHOLE LIFE CHANGED.
--> THE PEOPLE I HAD BEEN SELLING TO HAD BEEN BUSTED.
--> OKAY, LET'S MOVE ON TO THE EXPERIMENTAL CATEGORY,
BECOME -- USED TO BE PART OF THE ANIMATION CATEGORY, WE
SEPARATED IT, EXPERIMENTAL FILM IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.
SOMETIMES IT IS HARD TO DECIPHER WHAT THEY ARE GOING FOR.
BUT I THINK IT'S -- THESE THINGS ARE WORK LOOKING AT.
--> IT IS ANOTHER AVENUE OF ART.
I MEAN, IF YOU WANT TO PUT IT IN ART PARLANCE, THIS WOULD BE
LIKE MODERN ART TO SOME, AS OPPOSED TO, SAY, YOU KNOW,
PICASSO OR RENOIR OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, YOU KNOW,
TRADITIONAL STYLE.
EXPERIMENTAL ISN'T TRYING TO TELL A NARRATIVE STORY, IT IS
TRYING TO EVOKE A FEELING OR SOME KIND OF THOUGHT OR SOMETHING.
SO IT IS ONE OF THOSE THAT YOU JUST EXPERIENCE, AND THEY ARE
VERY INTERESTING, JUST IF YOU LET YOURSELF SIT BACK AND
RELAX AND ENJOY IT A LITTLE BIT.
--> OUR WINNER IS ANOMIE FROM DEENAH JOHNSON OF SAN FRANCISCO.
SHE KIND OF EXPLORES HISTORICAL EVENTS AND
CATALYSTS THROUGH USE OF OPTICAL PRINTING AND FOUND
FOOTAGE, A LOT OF FILMMAKERS USE FOUND FOOTAGE, FILE
FOOTAGE FLOWN AWAY.
--> PUBLIC DOMAIN STUFF.
--> LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A CLIP
FROM ANOMIE, THE EXPERIMENTAL WINNER.
--> LET'S MOVE ON TO ANIMATION, WHICH HAS BECOME A VERY STRONG
CATEGORY IN RECENT YEARS.
THANKS TO THE CHAIR, GREG CARLSON, WHO HAS DONE A GREAT
JOB OF RECRUITING LAST YEAR'S BEST OF SHOW.
--> RIGHT.
--> WAS AN ANIMATED FILM. THIS YEAR'S WINNER, IT LOOKS
LIKE A STRONG FIELD AGAIN, AND THIS YEAR'S WINNER IS OUT OF GERMANY.
--> LEEB EN SEDER, -- LEBENSADER, HAND-DRAWN
ANIMATION, VERY DIFFICULT, FIRST OF ALL.
THIS WAS A SENIOR THESIS PROJECT AS WELL FOR THE FILMMAKER.
SHOWN AT SEVERAL OTHER FILM FESTIVALS, BUT IT IS INTRICATE
KIND OF DESIGN WORK, AND, AGAIN, THE WORK REQUIRED TO DO
ANIMATION WELL IS SOMETHING THAT SCARES MOST FILMMAKERS.
--> ME INCLUDED.
I'VE DONE ANIMATION BEFORE, AND I DON'T DO IT ANY LONGER,
BECAUSE IT IS A LITTLE TOO MUCH WORK.
SO I'M ALWAYS INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE DO, AND
THE FACT THAT SHE DID A LOT OF THIS BY HAND IS REALLY MEANS A
LOT, BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE COMPUTER TOOLS
TO DO SOME OF THESE THINGS.
SO THE GERMAN FILM LEBENSADER IS A FILM, THE WORD TRANSLATES
TO LIFE LINE, ABOUT A LITTLE GIRL WHO FINDS A WHOLE WORLD
OF LIFE INSIDE A LEAF.
--> FINALLY, WE COME TO INDIGENOUS VOICES, USED TO BE
CALLED NATIVE AMERICAN VOICES, PRAIRIE ROSE OUR CHAIR OF THIS
COMMITTEE AND OUR WINNER THIS YEAR IS "AMERICAN OUTRAGE" BY
GEORGE AND BETH GAIMING FROM OLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
-- GAGE FROM OLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
--> CARRIE AND MARY DAN ARE WEST SHOW SHANI SISTERS, WHO
LIVE AND RANCH OUTSIDE CRESCENT SALLY IN NORTH
CENTRAL NEVADA.
THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT INFORMED THEM THEIR
ANIMALS WERE TRESPASSING IN 1973.
TRESPASSING ON UNITED STATES PUBLIC LAND WITHOUT A PERMIT.
THAT SET OFF A DISPUTE BETWEEN THE DAN SISTERS AND THE UNITED
STATES THAT SWEPT TO THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT
AND BEYOND.
--> AND FINALLY, WE ALWAYS END BY TALKING ABOUT THE
TWO-MINUTE MOVIE CONTEST. AGAIN STARTED BY GREG CARLSON,
A FESTIVAL CO-CHAIR ALONG WITH YOURSELF THIS YEAR, AND THIS
WILL BE FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MAIN VENUE, THE MAIN THEATRE
9:15, FREE, AND WHAT ARE THE GROUND RULES?
--> BASICALLY YOU HAVE TO SUBMIT A FILM BY FEBRUARY 19th,
I BELIEVE, HAS TO BE TWO MINUTES IN LENGTH, NOT A FRAME LONGER.
--> NOT 2:01.
--> OR IT WILL BE CUT.
AND THERE ARE SOME BASIC CONTENT RULES LOOK UP ON THE
WEBSITE ABOUT THAT.
BUT IT IS PRETTY FREE-WHEELING.
ALMOST ANYTHING YOU WANT TO PUT IN, WHICH IS THE FUN ABOUT
THIS FESTIVAL, AND TWO TWO MISDEMEANOR -- TWO-MINUTE FEST
PART, YOU GUESS A REALLY WIDE RANGE OF STUFF IN THIS.
IT TENDS TO BE YOUNGER PEOPLE. IT'S FOR ANYBODY TO ENTER.
--> A LOT OF FUN.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR FILM TO GREG CARLSON AT THE TWO-MINUTE
MOVIE CONTEST IF YOU WANT TO DO IT, AND FRIDAY NIGHT, MARCH
5th, 9:15, THE ALWAYS FUN, ALWAYS FAN FRIENDLY TWO-MINUTE
MOVIE CONTEST.
--> EXACTLY.
