The first phase of the National Animal Identification System will be to assign each property involved
in livestock commerce a unique premises identification number. "A premises" is defined as any location
where animals come in contact with one another. This includes farms, ranches, feed yards,
auction barns, and even fairs.
It's important to remember that when you apply for a premises identification,
the identifier is assigned to the premises and not to you, the owner.
Thus, even if a feedyard changes hands, the premises identifier remains the same.
Premises identification will be maintained at the state and tribal level, therefore please contact
your state or tribe's animal health department to register your premises and obtain a premises
number. In some situations, such as raising livestock on public lands, premises registration
will require you to consult with your state or federal animal health official.
