The Sydney Morning Herald A year to remember
On behalf of the managing sports editor, Ian Fuge, the sports editor Alex Brown, the Sun
Herald sports editor Paul Cully, I’d like to thank the Sports Commission for acknowledging our work.
All we do is go to work and do what we love every day. I think we’re very fortunate
to work in sport. It’s just fun. The editors and I would like to thank the reporters, subeditors,
photographers and designers who bring Ian’s vision to life every day, particularly the
unsung heroes. Many of our reporters were acknowledged here tonight as finalists, but
there are others that do things that are so far above and beyond. People like Rupert Guiness
who worked 35 days straight around the Tour de France, like Mike Cochral, who worked 40
days straight during the World Cup, Brendan Esposito who goes to sporting events and photographs
them simply because he wants to. He’s not rostered on to do so. James Polson, young
subeditor who watches Mark Webber go round in circles at two o’clock in the morning.
Wow, it’s just a wonderful achievement for us and thanks to the Commission. We’re very proud of this.
Thank you
