[Independent Innovation]
Modern HSR technologies took developed countries 40 years of development
Whereas in China it only took 5 years to build the same technologies. How did this miracle come true?
In this one month interview, we discovered that the technologies include rail tracks, bridges, tunnels, culverts
communications, signaling, electrical power, rail operation controls, service systems and high speed trains design and manufacturing
In all aspects, we can see the technology is built appoint [Original Innovations], [Integrated Innovations] and the [Introduction, Digestion and Absorption of Innovations]
This 3 innovation strategies are used and are recognized to lead a successful path for China HSR
In the beginning of the operation of China HSR, developers face a serious question waiting for an answer
[Does China own the Intellectual property rights of the HSR technology. Put it simple, does the HSR belongs to China?]
The HSR project began in 2004 when the Chinese government approved the project
The project was built appoint [Original Innovations], [Integrated Innovations] and the [Introduction, Digestion and Absorption of Innovations]. All 3 lead to [Independent Innovation] for China HSR
[Independent Innovation] is used to boost the development of China HSR
They are recognized to lead the successful path for China HSR
At the end of 2009, before the Wugang HSR opens to the public, the operational manager of Guangzhou Rail invites his counterparts from Japan to inspect the rail cab
I let him inspect every parts of the train and take photographs as he wish
Everyone did not know the reason behind the visit but they only saw the smile from their manager
3 Years ago when the manager visits the Japanese Shinkansen, he found it difficult to even take a single photograph from the cab of the Shinkansen
"The Japanese finally allowed me to take photos far away from the cab after [6 approvals]. The photos did not lead to any of the technology anyway"
This experience told us that China must go through the road of [Independent Innovations] because [Foreign Introduction] is like getting a password book. Getting the system is helpful. But we must make effort of gaining the core technology ourselves.
The manager of China Railway 15 Bureau Group Corporation also faces the problem of [Foreign Introduction] when it comes to building HSR viaducts
The concrete recipe of HSR from Germany is not 100% suitable for Chinese adaption for manufacturing. Without [Introduction, Digestion and Absorption of Innovations], manufacturing of HSR would not be smooth and successful
"We made serious efforts and did thousands of experiments. We started from material technologies from Germany. We improved and combined it Chinese material technologies". Each of these concrete rail beds are now used in Chinese HSR
In addition, the Chinese HSR project consisted of design and construction, equipment manufacturing, train signaling control, systems integration and operational management. This is a giant system. Without domestic innovations, the Chinese HSR would not have succeed
In building the Wugang HSR, the Chinese have registered 946 patents. The Chinese gained the technology to the 350 km/h train systems, including the train body, bogie, traction control, train networking system and breaking system adding to 9 main core technologies and 10 supporting technologies
"We have also created new integrated electrical systems. They form the core technology as well" "They are now the most advanced HSR technology in the world"
"For civil engineering, we have applied new technology on materials, structure, equipment and process in building this rail bridge. There are 7 patents registered for this bridge. They all belong to the Chinese people" [Beijing Shanghai HSR Bridge over Yangtze River]
If we put monuments along the route of Wugang HSR to commemorate the technology, we would see one every 10 seconds. However, there are no monuments across the route, the HSR builders instead put their names underneath passenger seats, underneath trains and at back of the concrete tracks
We have put the names of QA Engineers on the manufacturing of concrete beds and we also have maintained records in computer database for easy management
We put our names here to enhance our responsibility as well as connecting our fate to this train
"To connect our fate with the HSR". Every passengers should remember this phrase from the ordinary manufacturing workers
Just a little mistake would cause serious accident to this giant HSR system and the passengers could just relax to take this train travel without worrying about safety. We have to thank the workers to devote their effort and connect their fate to the train
In China, there are two main high speed train manufacturing companies [CSR and CNR]. This guy is an expert on electrical converter from CSR. This young girl is a welding worker from CNR
This guy observes that his vision ability greatly reduces due to prolong usage of computers. Suggested by the doctor, if his sight goes further worse, he could go blind if he does not protect his eye
"My lover was very angry. She smashed my computer. She said I cannot use the monitor anymore. I said that was no solution, I must continue on"
Whereas for the girl, she faced great difficulties in the initial stage of work. "At that time, the safety mask can only be used by holding one hand in front of it. For welding aluminum, you have to do it with two hands. At that time, I had to modify the mask and hang it over my head to practice welding"
One year later, the girl received Welding Training Certificate from Europe. She was the first female in the world to receive such certificate
As for this guy, his work on developing the new HSR train is scheduled to be manufactured and tested on track by the end of 2010 with maximum speed of 380km/h
"I think one must sacrifice for good. I feel deserved in improving the HSR technology for China"
"I feel I am part of the team. I cannot risk to not working hard. I cannot risk to leave the whole team behind"
"The Wugang HSR project would take 8 to 10 years to implement abroad. For us, the project only took 4 and half years. We have worked overtime and sacrificed resting time and to get the job done"
"It is like fighting in a war. We must compromise. We must do our best. We do not want to be sorry in the future. If there is any problem, we will feel regret. It is awfully bad"
"I feel sorry for my whole family (parent, wife and kids). I have worked in the railway ministry for 6 year now. I have only seen my parents once. My parents feel puzzled. How could any work be that tough? As compromise, the HSR network is being massively constructed and developed now"
50 years ago, It was our goal to drill oil. We called the oil drillers as "steel man". Today, so many workers devote their lives for HSR in China. Lets call them "high steel man" [high steel = HSR in Chinese]
"We have great management from the government and the advantage of the socialist system. We have complete national rail network and central management advantage. We have a high quality and hardworking team. We have great support from the Chinese people which gives us power"
"The development of China HSR fully applies the [Scientific Development] strategy, in turn leads us to the path of [Independent Innovations] for HSR.
Let us go back to the first question [Does China own the Intellectual property rights of HSR technology?] "We can just relax on the issue. We now go abroad for cooperation with America, Brazil and Saudi without any problem because we do own the Intellectual property rights. We can definitely settle the issue"
China HSR industries holds complete Intellectual property rights. We have seen Chinese companies going abroad to bid HSR projects such as in Saudi and America.
Chinese made train cars and manufacturing parts are exported to 50 countries in the world. CSR and CNR won $2.3 billion US of foreign bids last year. There are also plans to export trains to Europe and Latin America. HSR has become a popular brand of "Made in China"
