HELLO. I'M TODD PARK, THE CHIEF
TECHNOLOGY OFFICER FROM THE HHS HERE WITH THE GREAT KAREN
POLLITZ, DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR CONSUMER INFORMATION AND
INSURANCE OVERSIGHT. WE ARE VERY EXITED TO BE HERE
TODAY TO ANNOUNCE WANT LATEST UPDATE TO HEALTHCARE.GOV.
AS I THINK A LOT OF FOLKS KNOW, HEALTHCARE.GOV IS A WEBSITE THAT
LAUNCHED ON JULY FIRST OF THIS YEAR AND THE FIRST WEBSITE THAT
INTEGRATES BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC HEALTH INSURANCE OPTIONS
FOR CONSUME TOURS ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO CHECK OUT AND FIND THE
COVERAGE THAT IS RIGHT FOR THEM. ON OCTOBER 1, WE ADDED PRICE
ESTIMATES AS WELL AS DETAILS AND INFORMATION FOR PRIVATE
INSURANCE PLANS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES, AND TODAY WE ARE
EXITED TO ANNOUNCE A MAJOR CHANGE OF INFORMATION.
AND SO HERE IS KAREN. WE ARE VERY EXITED.
ALSO ON OCTOBER 1, ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT HEALTH PLANS
INCLUDED NEW INFORMATION ABOUT THE RATES AT WHICH APPLICANTS
MIGHT BE DENIED FOR COVERAGE AND THE RATES AT WHICH PEOPLE MIGHT
BE CHARGED MORE THAN THE STANDARD PRICE BECAUSE OF THEIR
HEALTH STATUS. SO THIS IS ALL VERY IMPORTANT
INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS AS THEY SEEK TO SHOP FOR PRIVATE
HEALTH INSURANCE AS WELL AS COMPARE THEIR OTHER OPTIONS THAT
THEY MIGHT HAVE UNDER MEDICAID, SHIP, PREEXISTING CONDITION
INSURANCE PROGRAMSES AND SO FORTH.
SO WE HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION ON HEALTHCARE.GOV
AND STARTING TODAY, WE HAVE ALL OF THAT INFORMATION FOR EVEN
MORE PRIVATE INSURANCE PLANS. ON OCTOBER 1, WE HAD OR SHOWED
230 HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES WHO WERE SELLING COVERAGE TO
INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN THE INDIVIDUAL MARKET.
AND TODAY, THAT NUMBER IS UP TO ALMOST 300.
AND IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF PLAN OPTIONS THEY OFFERED IN
OCTOBER, WE SHOWED ABOUT 4400 PLAN OPTIONS AND NOW, WE ARE UP
TO ABOUT 8,500 PLAN OPTIONS. SO THIS IS VERY EXCITING.
WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK THE
INSURANCE COMPANIES FOR THEIR INCREDIBLE HARD WORK AND
COOPERATION IN BRINGING YOU THIS INFORMATION THROUGH
HEALTHCARE.GOV. THIS HAS BEEN AN ERK ENORMOUS
EFFORT TO GATHER INFORMATION ON SO MANY PLANS, NEW REPORTING
REQUIREMENTS AND FOR SURE THERE WERE LEARNING CURVE ISSUES WHEN
WE GO THROUGH, AND NOT EVERYBODY WHO TRIED TO GET US ALL THE
INFORMATION ON OCTOBER COULD DO IT ON TIME FOR THAT LAUNCH BUT
WE KEPT WORKING AT IT AND SO THAT IS WHY WE HAVE SO MANY MORE
PLANS TODAY AND I'D LIKE TO THANK MY OWN STAFF, THE WEB
PORTAL TEAM, HEADED UP BY DOUG PENNINGTON AND HIS FINE CREW,
FOR THE WORK HE DID SO CLOSELY WITH THE INSURANCE CARRIERS TO
BRING YOU THIS NEW INFORMATION. WE THINK TRANSPARENCY IS THE
NAME OF THE GAME UNDER HEALTH CARE REFORM.
THIS IS HOW PEOPLE ARE GOING TO FIND COVERAGE OPTION THAT IS
BEST MEET THEIR NEEDS AND FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE PROTECTIONS
UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT THAT WILL MAKE IT EVEN EASIER
FOR THEM TO GET INTO GOOD COVERAGE.
AND SO, I THINK WITH THAT, WE'D LIKE TO TAKE SOME QUESTIONS FROM
OUR AUDIENCE WHO MAY BE MEMBERS OF THE PRESS.
I'M HAPPY
TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.
WHILE WE ARE WAITING FOR QUESTIONS, I MIGHT JUST ADD
N-MANY MARKETS NOW, PEOPLE MAY BE ABLE TO SEE THE CHOICE OF
MORE THAN 100 PLAN OPTIONS, WHICH CAN BE PRETTY
OVERWHELMING. AND JUST AS A REMINDER, THERE
ARE VERY IMPORTANT SEARCH AND FILTER TOOLS ON HEALTHCARE.GOV
SO YOU CAN NARROW YOUR SEARCH FOCUSING, FOR EXAMPLE, ON PLANS
THAT MAY BE HAVE A DEDUCT NIBBLE A RANGE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE
WITH OR A PREMIUM THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH.
CERTAIN BENEFITS BEING COVERED OR NOT, CERTAIN CARRIERS.
SO WE REALLY DO ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE SITE AND
REALLY SPEND SOME TIME STUDYING TO SEE WHAT PLAN OPTIONS THERE
MAY BE. I THINK WE HAVE A QUESTION?
WE DO. OUR FIRST QUESTION IS FROM SARAH
CLIFF WITH POLITICO. YOUR LINE IS OPEN.
HI, THANK YOU FOR TAKING THIS CALL.
HELLO? HELLO?
HELLO. WE CAN HEAR YOU.
HI. I WAS WONDERING.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SENSE OF TRAFFIC ON THE SITE?
HOW MANY VISITED? HOW MANY HAVE GONE OFF TO
OUTSIDE INSURANCE COMPANIES TO INVESTIGATE OPTIONS THERE?
JUST WANTED TO GET A SENSE OF HOW MANY FOLKS ARE USING THIS TO
FIND INSURANCE? SO AT THIS POINT, CLOSE TO 3
MILLION FOLKS HAVE ACTUALLY VISITED HEALTHCARE.GOV AND ABOUT
A MILLION FOLKS HAVE ACTUALLY USED THE FINDER ALL THE WAY
THROUGH TO FIND OPTIONS THAT LOOKS GOOD FOR THEM AND THEN
GONE OFF SITE. THANK YOU.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ASK A QUESTION, AS A REMINDER, PRESS
STAR THEN 1. WE DO HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION IN
THE QUEUE. ONE MOMENT PLEASE.
LANED FROM THE ORLANDO SENTINEL. YOUR LINE IS OPEN.
HI. I WANTED TO ASK ABOUT THE
INFORMATION ABOUT THE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE BEING DENIED WHO
APPLIED FOR COVERAGE AND BEING DENIED.
WAS THAT AVAILABLE IN OCTOBER AND IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS
NEW ON THE SITE TODAY? THAT WAS AVAILABLE IN OCTOBER
AND NOW WE SHOW THAT INFORMATION FROM MORE CARRIERS.
I WOULD ALSO ADD THAT INSURANCE THAT POST DATA ON HEALTHCARE.GOV
CAN REFRESH THEIR INFORMATION MONTHLY.
SO, SOME OF THE STATISTICS THAT YOU'LL SEE WILL BE UPDATED EVEN
FROM OCTOBER. CAN YOU STIM HEAR ME?
YES. I WANTED TO COME BACK TO THE
PREVIOUS QUESTION WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT PEOPLE VISITING THE SITE.
HAVE YOU FOUND THAT THERE ARE SOME STATES OR REGION WHERE IS
THERE AREN'T AS MANY ONESES AS OTHER STATES?
WELL, LET'S SEE, I'M SORRY, DO YOU MEAN IN TERMS OF THE WEB
TRAFFIC OR IN TERMS OF THE NUMBER OF OPTIONS WE DISPLAY?
I MEAN THE NUMBER OF OPTION SNOOZE THERE IS DEFINITELY A
DIFFERENCE. MORE OPTIONS IN BIGGER STATES,
FOR EXAMPLE. SO, YES, THERE DEFINITELY IS A
DIFFERENCE BY STATE. SOME OF THE SMALLER STATES,
RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, HAVE THE SMALLEST NUMBER OF OPTIONS AND
CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS AND ILLINOIS, BIGGER STATES, HAVE
MORE OPTIONS. OKAY.
THAT'S JUST REFLECTING OF THE CARRIERS THAT ARE LICENSED TO
SELL IN THOSE STATES. OUR NEXT CALLER IS BOB WITH
THE NEW YORK TIMES. YOUR LINE IS OPEN.
THANK YOU. TO THE DATA REPORTD TO HHS
INDICATE WHY PEOPLE WERE DENIED COVERAGE AND IS THAT INFORMATION
ON THE SITE? YES.
WE ASKED THE CARRIERS TO REPORT TO US PEOPLE THAT THEY TURNED
DOWN FOR HEALTH STATUS REASONS AND WE HAVE THE DEFINITION OF
TURNED DOWN, THAT WOULD INCLUDE PEOPLE BEING REFUSED COVERAGE,
FOR EXAMPLE, FOR A PLAN THAT THEY ASKED FOR POSSIBLY BEING
OFFERED A DIFFERENT PLAN WITH LESSER COVERAGE, A HIGHER
DEDUCTIBLE AND SO FORTH. SO, YES, THAT IS THE REASON WHY
THEY ARE TURNED DOWN. DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
YES. SO ALL THE DENIALS ARE LUMPED
TOGETHER? YES.
OR REPORTED TOGETHER? RIGHT.
THANK YOU. AS A REMINDER IF YOU WOULD
LIKE TO ASK A QUESTION, PLEASE PRESS STAR AND THEN 1.
I SEE NO OTHER QUESTIONS IN QUEUE.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US.
AND PLEASE CHECK OUT HEALTHCARE.GOV AND LET YOU KNOW
WHAT YOU THINK. THANK YOU.
