You can stop holding your breath, folks,
to welcome the one and only oxygen.
The life giver and the life taker away.
This contradictory character is the commonest element on the planet.
Sorry, oxygen, didn't mean to offend.
A gregarious little creature,
oxygen likes to link up with just about any other element
you care to mention to form oxides.
Oxygen goes round as a pair
but sometimes it turns trio
and gains an atom becoming another reactive gas called ozone
which at ground level is a pollutant.
But high in the upper atmosphere it blocks out the sun's ultraviolet rays
and helps to prevent cancers.
Yes, folks, there are two sides to every story.
