Transcript:
President Barack Obama, who from his private residences has not seen hungry and thirsty
people cross his property in increasing numbers for the last twenty years, came to El Paso
to argue that he is doing his part to crack down on illegal immigration.
Mr. Obama sought to reassure increasingly frustrated supporters that he believes it
is a moral and economic imperative to liberalize immigration laws, the same laws whose enforcement
provisions have been ignored by both Republican and Democratic administrations since the end
of the Bracero program in 1964.
>> We have strengthened border security beyond what many believed was possible.
>> The president spoke within view of the southern border, which is crossed successfully
by between 40,000 to 58,000 undocumented workers per month.
>> The fence is now basically complete.
>> He cited increases in the number of agents at Customs and Border Protection, an agency
whose standing orders to begin confrontations using non-lethal rounds forced slain agent
Brian Terry to oppose an AK47 assault rifle with a bean bag gun.
I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us
one more time. Maybe they'll need a moat. [Laughter.] Maybe they want alligators in
the moat.
In response Senator Jim DeMint wrote "A border fence alone will not solve the problem of
illegal immigration. We must also have interior enforcement of immigration law." DeMint is
a ranking member of the Republican party, whose elder statesmen have stated that foreign
workers are needed to protect the interests of agribusiness.
>> I'll offer anybody here $50 an hour if you'll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season,
and pick for the whole season. The whole season--not just 1 day. Because you can't do it, my friend
>> Mr. Obama speaks with considerable authority on issues of immigration because he served
as both a civil rights attorney and constitutional law professor, neither of which professions
have seen reduced wages and fewer African American workers because of the influx of
unskilled undocumented laborers.
Mr. Obama, none of whose family have been killed by a Guatemalan citizen driving 81
in a 40 mile an hour zone, plans next to lecture small business owners on how to create jobs
and meet a payroll by delivering goods or services.
