Governor-General returns to his father's marae

The Governor General has returned to his roots —
to his father's homeland within Ngati Kahungunu.
Sir Jerry Mateparae comes from the Anaru family,
and for the first time
he's being welcomed onto Tangoio Marae, Napier.
Irena Smith was there.
A son of Ngati Kahungunu, honoured by his people.
We're happy that our descendant
has returned to his marae.
Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae has returned to Tangoio Marae
- his birth father's marae.
Sir Jerry was adopted, raised by his aunty within Tuwharetoa.
My aunt was cunning in adopting him
through the system in case
my parents changed their minds and wanted to bring him back.
Although he grew up away from here, the connections cannot be severed
and will not be forgotten.
It's been 15 months since the marae invited their lost son to visit,
and today, it has happened.
He's a gentle, humble man.
Sir Jerry has held the post of Governor General
for almost 14 months.
His family is very proud.
Most of us are happy with our lot, but he's reached new heights.
Now that Sir Jerry Mateparae has returned home,
he can now move forward.
Irena Smith, Te Karere.
