Hi. My name is Ellen.
And I'm a student consultant here at the the OIT Help Desk at UMASS Amherst.
I'm here today to talk to you about how to connect securely to our wireless network.
Please keep in mind that this will only work from on campus.
Now, let's get you connected.
Here you have your typical Windows 7 background.
If you have a new Windows computer, this is probably what you'll be seeing.
First, go ahead and go down to the lower right hand corner of the screen and click on the network icon.
You should see two networks listed there, UMASS and UMASS-SECURE1X.
Please note that if you see other networks, we can consider them rogue networks and they are not safe to connect to.
To connect to SECURE1X, you actually have to connect to UMASS first, as you will not be able to connect right away.
Select the UMASS network and click connect.
Once you have successfully connected, go ahead and open a browser.
You should be redirected to the web log on for the UMASS network.
Instead of entering your NetID and password to connect though, go ahead and click on the big orange button directly to the left that says "Connect to UMASS-SECURE1X".
Here you'll be prompted to enter your NetID and password, this is the same information you'd use to log in to UMail or Spire.
Once you log in, click the "Run XpressConnect" button.
Agree to the terms and conditions by checking the box and then click start.
At this point, you may be prompted by Windows to allow XpressConnect to run. Go ahead and click yes.
At the "Welcome" screen, you will be prompted to enter your NetID and password again.
Click "Continue". Next, you'll need to install SecureW2.
Click "Install".
Once the install is complete, you'll need to continue the configuration. At this point, your computer will switch you over to the SECURE1X network.
Once you are authenticated, it will validate your connectivity and tell you that you've connected.
Click "Done".
If you can connect to an external website, i.e. not a website that is affiliated with UMASS,
congratulations! You have successfully connected to UMASS-SECURE1X
You can always contact the OIT Help Desk if you have any questions.
The OIT Help Desk is open 830am to 500pm Monday through Friday
but our website, oit.umass.edu is always open.
Good luck and safe computing!
