SYMBOL OF THE GREAT RESPECT AND ADMIRATION WHICH CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY HAS FOR ITS 55,000+

GRADUATES, IT IS ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE THAT ON THIS SPECIAL DAY, YOUR GRADUATION DAY,
THAT I WOULD CHALLENGE YOU TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR LEGACY AS A PERSON WILL BE. CAL
U HAS ADOPTED THE CORE VALUES OF INTEGRITY, CIVILITY, AND RESPONSIBILITY, AND IT IS OUR

HARD, YOU HAVE DEVELOPED YOUR SKILLS, YOU HAVE INVESTED THE EFFORT, YOU HAVE ACHIEVED
SUCCESS, AND TONIGHT YOU WILL CLAIM A TOKEN OF THAT SUCCESS AS YOU RECEIVE YOUR DIPLOMA
AND BEGIN TO BUILD YOUR LEGACY, THE THING FOR WHICH YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED. THE WORD
“LEGACY” HAS SEVERAL MEANINGS INCLUDING THIS ONE: “SOMETHING THAT IS HANDED DOWN
OR REMAINS FROM A PREVIOUS GENERATION OR TIME.” BUT IT ALSO HAS ANOTHER MEANING: THE LEGACY
OF A PERSON IS ALSO THOUGHT TO BE "WHATEVER THAT PERSON IS REMEMBERED FOR AFTER THEY LEAVE
THIS PLANET CALLED EARTH." THE WORD IS ALSO USED TO REFER TO A PERSON’S “SPIRIT,”
ALTHOUGH NOT USUALLY IN A RELIGIOUS SENSE. BUT THE KEY POINT IS THIS: THE SPIRIT OF A
PERSON, WHICH IS THE LEGACY OF A PERSON, LIVES ON AFTER THEM EVEN WITHOUT A RELIGIOUS CONTEXT.
AND THAT SPIRIT IS THEIR LEGACY. ADOLPH HITLER LIVES ON IN EVERY PERSON WHO IS FILLED WITH
RACIAL OR ETHNIC HATRED, AND WHO ACTS ON THAT HATRED. THE SPIRIT OF ADOLPH HITLER IS ALSO,
QUITE CLEARLY, HIS LEGACY. IT IS HOW HE IS REMEMBERED. THE SPIRIT OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
ON THE OTHER HAND, ALSO LIVES ON IN EVERY PERSON WHO BELIEVES THAT ALL MEN AND WOMEN
ARE CREATED EQUAL, AND WHO BELIEVES THAT FREEDOM WITH JUSTICE IS THE RIGHT OF EVERY PERSON.

WOULDN'T IT BE INTERESTING TO KNOW WHY WE
REMEMBER THINGS AS WE DO? OVER THE HOLIDAYS, YOU WILL GATHER WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY
AND TALK ABOUT DAYS GONE BY OR YOUR FAMILY HISTORY. I WANTED TO USE THIS TIME TO CONNECT
YOU WITH YOUR CALIFORNIA HISTORY. MY ACADEMIC ADVISOR WAS A MAN NAMED MEL MADDEN. HE COULD
HAVE PASSED AS A HOMELESS STREET PERSON, BUT HE WAS TRULY A BRILLIANT INDIVIDUAL. THE
MOMENT WE MET HE TOLD ME THE TO DROP THE DOCTOR AND JUST CALL HIM MEL. I WAS IMMEDIATELY
INVESTED AT THAT POINT. MEL WAS USUALLY INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE AND AS A RESULT AS HIS
ADVISEE, I TOO BECAME INVOLVED IN HIS CAUSES. I TOOK OVER HIS POSITION AS A GROUP LEADER
FOR PARENTS ANONYMOUS IN THE MON VALLEY. HE EXPECTED ME TO KNOW ABOUT THE WAR IN IRELAND
BECAUSE ON HIS SUMMER BREAKS HE WOULD GO AND FIGHT IN THE WAR AND HE WAS HUGELY CONCERNED
ABOUT THE INSURGENTS IN CHINA. THROUGH THIS EDUCATION, I LEARNED THAT TO BE EDUCATED WAS
NOT ONLY ACADEMIC. IT WAS TO BE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY YOUR WORLD AND YOURSELF.
I CAME TO CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY TO BE PROMOTED ON MY JOB AND LEFT WITH THE UNDERSTANDING
THAT MY OPINION ABOUT MY SKILLS AND MY KNOWLEDGE WAS THE ONLY OPINION THAT COUNTED. MY GROWTH
HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ADDITIONAL CREDENTIALS MY GROWTH WAS INTERNAL. I CAN ONLY HOPE
THAT OBTAINING YOUR DEGREE THIS EVENING IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF MANY GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS
FOR YOU. IN LOOKING BACK AT MY JOURNAL FROM AN EXPERIENTIAL CLASS IN 1987, I WOULD LIKE
TO LEAVE YOU WITH TEN INSIGHTS THAT I WROTE ABOUT MY LIFE AND TO THIS DAY THOSE INSIGHTS
REALLY HAVE NOT CHANGED. SO IN THE STYLE OF DAVID LETTERMAN, I WOULD LIKE TO START WITH
NUMBER 10. HAVE FAITH; NEVER LOSE HOPE. NUMBER 9, DO WHAT YOU LOVE, AND LOVE EVERYTHING.
EVEN BAD EXPERIENCES WILL TEACH YOU SOMETHING. NUMBER 8, DON'T UNDER ESTIMATE THE IMPACT
YOU HAVE ON THE WORLD. NUMBER 7, YOU HAVE ONLY FAILED IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE. AND NUMBER
6, STOP LISTENING TO OTHERS NEGATIVE OPINIONS ABOUT YOUR DECISIONS. THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE
GOALS, DON'T SHARE THEM WITH OTHERS. COMMIT THOSE GOALS TO PAPER AND REVIEW THEM DAILY.
AN OLD ZEN SAYING, YOU CAN'T TAKE AIM WITHOUT A TARGET. NUMBER 5, USE YOUR EDUCATION AS
MOTIVATOR FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS. ALWAYS BE SOMEONE ELSE'S ENCOURAGEMENT. NUMBER
4, LIVE EVERYDAY AS IF IT WERE YOUR LAST. SOMETIMES WHEN YOU HAVE A MOMENT OF FREE TIME
SIT DOWN AND TRY WRITING YOUR OBITUARY. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO SAY ABOUT YOU?
WOULD YOU LIKE THEM TO SAY THAT YOU WORKED AT A JOB FOR 40 YEARS AND THAT YOUR FRIENDS
COULD BE RECEIVED AT SUCH—AND—SUCH A FUNERAL HOME AT A CERTAIN TIME AND A CERTAIN DATE.
OR WOULD YOU LIKE IT TO READ THAT YOU WERE GREATLY LOVED AND APPRECIATED BY YOUR FAMILY.

THE ACADEMIC HOOD IS A DESCENDENT OF THE COWL, AN ITEM OF CLOTHING WORN BY MEDIEVAL MONKS
TO WARD OFF THE COLD. THE COWL WAS WORN OVER A SHORT CAPE WITH A LONG TAIL KNOWN AS A LEAR
PIPE. BY THE YEAR 1450, THIS TYPE OF HOOD HAD DISAPPEARED AS EVERYDAY WEAR, EXCEPT IN
UNIVERSITIES SUCH AS OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE. SOMETIME DURING THE 15TH CENTURY, THE CAPE
WAS ABANDONED ALTOGETHER, AND THE MODERN—DAY ACADEMIC HOOD WAS BORN. THE MASTER’S HOOD
IS 3½ FEET LONG. IT HAS A 3 INCH WIDE BAND THAT DENOTES THE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE: FOR
EXAMPLE, GOLDEN—YELLOW DENOTES THE FIELD OF SCIENCE. CURRENTLY, BY INTERCOLLEGIATE
CODE, THERE ARE 26 OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED COLORS. THE COLORS ON THE INSIDE OF THE HOOD DENOTE
THE INSTITUTION CONFERRING THE DEGREE. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THIS HOOD THE COLORS OF CALIFORNIA
