THE MISSION OF THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL ON FITNESS, SPORTS,
AND NUTRITION IS TO EDUCATE, ENGAGE, AND EMPOWER
ALL AMERICANS OF ALL ABILITIES, ALL AGES
TO LEAD HEALTHY LIFESTYLES.
WE STARTED THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PROGRAM
IN 2007 TO REALLY HONOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE GIVEN
PROFESSIONAL CAREERS TO THE ADVANCEMENT
OF FITNESS, SPORTS, AND NUTRITION.
COACH SUMMITT HAS WON
OVER A THOUSAND BASKETBALL GAMES.
I AM HERE TO GIVE COACH SUMMITT
THE PRESIDENTIAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TOUCHES ME DEEPLY.
YOU KNOW, IT VALIDATES MY WORK OVER MY CAREER.
BUT TRANSCENDING THAT, IT’S YET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY
FOR THE MESSAGE TO GO OUT
THAT OUR SCHOOLS NEED HELP, OUR KIDS NEED HELP EARLY.
WE NEED TO GO BACK TO DAILY PHYSICAL EDUCATION
IN OUR SCHOOLS FOR ALL CHILDREN
OF ALL ABILITIES FOR THEIR LIFETIME.

PEOPLE TEND TO BE VERY, VERY SEDENTARY,
AND THAT THERE’S REDUCED OPPORTUNITIES
FOR PEOPLE TO ACTIVE, PARTICULARLY FOR THOSE
OF LOW INCOME
AND IN NEIGHBORHOODS THAT MAY BE CHALLENGING.
AND SO THAT’S ONE OF THE REASONS I’M PROMOTING
SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION
AND SCHOOL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY,
IS THAT FOR POOR PEOPLE, THERE ARE ESSENTIALLY
NO OTHER PLACES TO BE ACTIVE.

THE PROBLEM WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY IS OBESITY
THAT EXTENDS TO CHILDREN.
AND THAT’S WHY WE THINK THE FIRST LADY’S EMPHASIS
ON PREVENTING CHILDHOOD OBESITY IS SO IMPORTANT.
IT’S BEEN A FEATURE OF MY LIFE FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS.

I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE ARE OVERWHELMED--
UNFIT PEOPLE ARE OVERWHELMED BY CHANGING SO MUCH
AT THE SAME TIME.
THEY WANT TO GET FIT.
AND SOMEONE’S TELLING THEM THEY GOT TO EAT BETTER
AND THEY SHOULD DO SOMETHING THAT’S FUN,
AND THEN THEY SHOULD DO EXERCISE,
AND THEY SHOULD DO THIS KIND OF EXERCISE,
THAT THEY JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.
I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE SIMPLE.
AND IN THE PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL--
IT’S THE PRESIDENT COUNCIL OF FITNESS, FITNESS FIRST--
JUST FOCUS ON ONE THING AND HAVE A GOAL THAT’S DOABLE.
SO I REALLY BELIEVE THAT FITNESS IS YOUR ENTRY POINT
AND TO GIVE YOU THE OPTIMISM AND THE ENCOURAGEMENT
AND THE CONFIDENCE TO KEEP GOING FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
