In this video we’re going to look at what it’s like to search on Google in mainland
China. These are some observations we recorded in the Spring of 2012.
Google users in mainland China have observed that after searching for some keywords, they
commonly lose access for a minute or more. This video shows a few examples of observations
in three web browsers.
Let’s start with Chrome. So first I’m searching for the yellow river which is the
second longest river in China. You can see here I get search results as normal, uh scrolling
down the page it loaded just fine. But now I’m going to search for Yangtze River, which
is the longest river in China. So here you see I’ve actually gotten an error page,
uh the page says that the page is not available, that the connection was interrupted. Clicking
to refresh the page I’m still waiting and haven't been able to get results. Visiting
google.com.hk, Im still not able to get results I’m getting that same error message. I’m
going to try opening a new tab. Still no luck. I’m just going to keep trying to re-fresh
here until I can get something. Still no luck, I’m I’m just continuing to refresh. So
we’re over a minute now still continuing to refresh. OK so after a minute thirty I’ve
now gotten back to the Google homepage. So I can try that original query again Yellow
river. And I get search results as normal. But when I do that second query Yangtze River
and hit search I get that same error page.
Lets try Firefox. Here I’m searching for Southern Metropolis Daily. A daily Newspaper
published in Guangzhou, and I get search results as normal. But now I’m going to modify my
search and search for Southern Weekly which is a Weekly newspaper published in the same
city and you can see I’ve gotten an error message. So as before I’m going to try refreshing
here until I get something. I can try a new tab. Just going to give this a couple seconds.
We can try navigating directly. So i keep getting this same error page I’m just going
to keep refreshing. Its been about a minute and still haven’t been able to get back
to Google. I’m just continuing to refresh I’ve got it going in two tabs. So after
about a minute thirty I’ve gotten back to the Google homepage.
So lets try it on the phone with Android. Here I’m searching for KFC and I get search
results as normal. But now I’m going to try a different query - here I’m searching
for McDonalds and I’ve gotten an error page and I’m just going to zoom in and what this
actually says is the web page is not available. So I’m just going to keep trying to search
again and pressing these icons performs additional searches. I keep getting this same error page.
So I’m just continuing to search by pressing these icons. So I haven’t been having much
luck so I’m going to wait a few moments before I bother searching again. So its been
well over the minute now so I’m going to try searching again. And sure enough now I’ve
got results. I’m going to try that second query McDonalds again and here I get that
same error page.
