Hey Paul Ryan, guess what- You’re allowed to follow Ayn Rand. And you’re allowed
to follow Jesus. But you don’t get to follow both.
Congratulations to Congressman Paul Ryan for being picked as Mitt Romney’s running mate
this year. Two guys totally against gay marriage who always look like they’re announcing
one. Now Paul Ryan seems nice enough- he’s serious,
he's intelligent, has a lovely family – So I promise not to make any hack jokes about
how he looks like Eddie Munster, oh - Eddie Munster called, he wants his hair back…
Look, I can’t make Paul Ryan Eddie munster jokes since because I look too much like KD
Lang. It's not right. For most of his life, Paul Ryan was a hardcore
acolyte of Ayn Rand.
Congressman Ryan famously said “The reason I got involved in public service, by and large,
if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand.”
Of course Ayn Rand is the widely admired author whose philosophy focused on the idea that
selfishness is a virtue. She said that altruism was evil, condemned all religion, and repeatedly
slammed Christianity for all that stupid compassion for the poor.
Ayn believed in a very simple world of Individualism vs. collectivism. That society was made
up of ‘makers’ and ‘takers’ and poor people- even the ones working 2 jobs to prop
up the Makers – you're all parasites. Ayn laid all this out in her classic novel
“Atlas Shrugged” which was changed from its original title ‘It's Totally OK To Be
A Really Selfish Douchebag.’ Paul Ryan said that “I give out ‘Atlas
Shrugged’ as Christmas presents, and I make all my interns read it.”
Now here’s where it gets kinda funny- Paul Ryan’s also a devout Catholic and talks
extensively about how deep his Christian faith is.
Of course, Jesus was that long haired hippy who hung out with the lowest members of society,
always advocated looking out for others, and warned us that not taking care of the less
fortunate was an immoral way to lead your life. He believed all humanity was interconnected
and generally his philosophy was not being a total dick.
Let's look at some of the subtle differences between Paul Ryan's two heroes, Ayn Rand and
Jesus. Jesus said, 'If you want to be perfect, go,
sell your possessions and give to the poor.'" Ayn Rand said, "If any civilization is to
survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject.”
Jesus said, "No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and Money."
In atlas shrugged, Ayn Rand wrote that money is ‘the root of all good.’
Jesus said, "It is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. It is easier
for a camel to go through the eye of a needle." Ayn Rand called the poor "moochers and looters."
Now I happen to think Ayn Rand’s a very powerful writer, and her fans are gonna hate
everything I say. You can read the hateful comments down below. That’s ok, cos Ayn
Rand was all about hate . She hated democracy, she hated poor people, she hated entitlements,
and she really hated religion. Now a lot of liberals want to harp on the
fact that Ayn Rand hated the social safety nets yet she was on social security and medicare
the last 8 years of her life. I give Ayn a pass on this one, since she had paid into
the system, and because it's just so damn funny.
Now recently Paul Ryan totally disavowed Ayn Rand—“I reject her philosophy” he said.
And Claims it’s an urban legend - his words - that ever admired her.
In the Sermon on the mount, Jesus famously said, ‘by your fruits you shall know them.”
Well, Paul, here's what I know about Ye. You want to cut taxes again for millionaires,
eliminate pell grans for more than 1 million students, you've called social security a
‘ponzi scheme,’ and you want to end Medicare and replace it with a voucher system that
makes old people with big health bills and pre-existing conditions have to go on the
market to buy private insurance plans in their 90s.
Yeah, you broke up with Ayn Rand - but she's still your number one booty call.
