My Name is Linda Hodgdon and In this short video I am going to answer the
question: “ Why do you use pictures for autism communication?”
We have learned that the majority of students with autism spectrum disorders have a strength
in understanding visual information compared to their ability to understand auditory information.
Think about this. Speech is fleeting. That means it is there and then gone. If you SAY
something to a student, your Speech can disappear before he even realizes your are talking to
him
Compared to that, something visual, like pictures, stays there long enough, so he can establish
attention and then take in the information. Using pictures to help give information to
students helps them understand better than just talking to them.
