>> HI, I'M MARIN ALSOP, MUSIC
DIRECTOR OF THE BALTIMORE
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, AND WELCOME
TO OUR BEAUTIFUL JOSEPH MYERHOFF
SYMPHONY HALL.
WE'RE PERFORMING THE WORLD
PREMIERE OF PHILIP GLASS'
"OVERTURE FOR 2012."
>> IT'S AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE
TO BE PART OF A WORLD PREMIERE,
'CAUSE NOT ONLY ARE WE ONSTAGE
PART OF THE PREMIERE, YOU IN THE
AUDIENCE ARE.
>> WHEN I GO TO LONDON AND DO A
CONCERT OF MUSIC BY PHILIP
GLASS, YOU CAN'T GET A SEAT IN
THE HOUSE.
IT'S SO POPULAR.
I THINK HE'S THE PERFECT
COMPOSER FOR THIS KIND OF WORLD
PREMIERE.
PHILIP SAYS THAT THIS IS A
CELEBRATORY PIECE, AND IT--
IT'S LOUD, OF COURSE.
THAT'S ALWAYS A GOOD THING.
HE'LL PROBABLY USE A LOT OF
PERCUSSION, KNOWING HIS MUSIC,
AND HE LOVES VERY RHYTHMIC,
DRIVING MUSIC, SO I IMAGINE
IT'LL REALLY GALVANIZE US ALL
AND-- AND MAKE US HAVE THIS
SENSE OF SHARED PATRIOTISM.
>> MARYLAND WAS THE CENTER OF
THE WAR OF 1812, WITH THAT "STAR
SPANGLED BANNER" AND THE
NATIONAL ANTHEM.
THIS WORK, THIS PHILIP GLASS
OVERTURE, IS SOMETHING THAT
BELONGS TO US AND PAYS TRIBUTE
TO THAT WAR.
>> IN ADDITION TO TCHAIKOVSKY'S
"1812 OVERTURE," WHICH YOU'LL
ALL RECOGNIZE, WE'RE GONNA BE
PERFORMING MUSIC BY GREAT
AMERICAN COMPOSERS, INCLUDING,
OF COURSE, PHILIP GLASS AND
JOHN WILLIAMS.
I CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER WAY TO
CELEBRATE A BRAND-NEW WORLD
PREMIERE PIECE OF MUSIC THAN BY
HAVING THE BLUE ANGELS ROARING
OVERHEAD, OVER 40 TALL SHIPS AND
NAVAL VESSELS, AND A GREAT
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMING
THE PREMIERE.
PLEASE JOIN US.
I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU
THEN.
