CEREMONY WILL TAKE PLACE TONIGHT
FOR A FALLEN SPRINGFIELD POLICE
OFFICER.
SEVERAL LAW-ENFORCEMENT
OFFICIALS , WHO CAPTURED AN
ESCAPED CONVICT AFTER A SHOOTOUT
LAST YEAR, WILL ALSO BE HONORED.
22NEWS REPORTER NICOLE NALEPA IS
LIVE IN SPRINGFIELD TO TELL US
WHO WILL BE RECOGNIZED AT THIS
EVENT.
POLICE SAY THE FAMILY OF LATE
SPRINGFIELD OFFICER KEVIN
AMBROSE WILL ACCEPT A MEDAL OF
HONOR IN HIS NAME AT TONIGHT'S
EVENT HERE AT SPRINGFIELD
CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL.
AMBROSE DIED ON DUTY IN JUNE,
WHILE TRYING TO HELP A WOMAN
WHOSE BOYFRIEND HAD THREATENED
HER. POLICE SAID THE BOYFRIEND,
WHO WAS A NEW YORK CITY
CORRECTIONS OFFICER, OPENED FIRE
AND KILLED AMBROSE AS THE
VETERAN OFFICER TRIED TO PROTECT
THE WOMAN AT HER APARTMENT
BUILDING. FOUR OTHER
LAW-ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS WILL
ALSO BE RECEIVING MEDALS TONIGHT
FOR APRIL 2011 INCIDENT
INVOLVING THE ARREST OF ESCAPED
CONVICT, TAMIK KIRKLAND.
KIRKLAND WAS SHOT BY POLICE
AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY OPENED FIRE
AT A BARBER SHOP. HE'S A ACCUSED
OF KILLING A CUSTOMER AND
WOUNDING THE BARBER. A
SPRINGFIELD OFFICER AND A STATE
TROOPER WERE ALSO SHOT IN THE
SHOOTOUT WITH THE SUSPECT.
THIS SPECIAL CEREMONY WILL BEGIN
AT 6PM, AT CENTRAL HIGH
SCHOOL...ON ROOSEVELT AVE. THE
PUBLIC IS INVITED TO
ATTEND...AND SHOW THEIR SUPPORT.
