Hello my name is Eric Legaud, today I would like to present you the track Hey Ya, by Outkast.
It's super simple, there are four chords, one strumming pattern,
and a tiny variation on the rythm on the third chord, on the D.
So right away let's see the chords on the left hand, and the rythm section on the right hand, right away!
So on the left hand we will see four positions. First a G chord.
3rd fret of E, 2nd of A, 3rd and 3rd of the last two strings.
Next a C9 chord which looks exactly like the G, except we move the major and the index one string away from us.
So we have 3rd fret of A, 2nd of D. The rest is the same. So the first two chords...
Next we go on a D major. So we have the ring finger that stays on the same position.
The index goes on the 2nd fret of G and the major on the 2nd fret of e.
Ok one more time so you can see clearly, and from the start. G, C9, D,
and the last one: E minor. With the little rabbit ears, 2nd fret of A and D.
Here I'm trying to make it fit in the frame, it's not easy. So G, C9, D, and Em.
Here we are! Let's see the right hand!
So for the right hand we have a rythm pattern that will last 90% of the loop of chords we just saw before.
And it is : Down - Down Up * Up Down Up, that's one bar.
One more time : Down - Down Up * Up Down Up,
I do a little *click* when I go down without strumming. The up-and-down movement never stops.
Down - Down Up * Up Down Up Down - Down Up * Up Down Up
Ok, so we will find this on the (G) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up,
on the (C9) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up, I do the (C9) a second time
And when I land on the D, there's the variation, we only have to strums downwards.
(D) Down - Down, and right after that, two bars of E minor. (Em) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up x2
And we go again from the start! (G) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up,
(C9) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up, (C9) again Down - Down Up * Up Down Up,
(D) Down - Down (Em) Down - Down Up * Up Down Up
(Em) again! Down - Down Up * Up Down Up
Faster, (G) (C9) x2, (D) Down - Down, (Em) x2
Another tiny trick I add, is on the D.
I take the pressure off the fingers once I've strummed, to really give it that staccato feel.
Here! That way it unties the structure a little. Cool! So here you are!
