Hi, Ellis Bromberg with more “Thinking Inside the Box” on
mptv.org. For some, August is a favorite month – so many activities going on in southeastern
Wisconsin and northern Illinois, a time for vacations, and celebrating summer before school
is back in session. Here at Milwaukee
Public Television, it’s a very busy month, and I want to take the opportunity to tell
you about three initiatives we’ve been working which you’ll be able to watch or participate
in during August. One of the
biggest events of every year in our part of the country is the Wisconsin State Fair.
This year, MPTV will have a booth at the fair, in the air-conditioned Expo Center, and we’d
love for you to stop by. We’ll have information about the station, a raffle for DOWNTON ABBEY
DVDs – and an opportunity for you to learn about NEXT AVENUE, our new website and community
engagement project for those 50 years and older. That project is partially funded
by the Helen Bader Foundation, who we thank for their support. You can explore NEXT
AVENUE even before the Fair: on the mptv.org homepage, just look for the NEXT AVENUE button
in the right-hand column. Also in the
right-hand column of the homepage, you’ll see another new button, a link to COLLEGE
PLACE. As many folks know, MPTV is a viewer-supported service of Milwaukee Area Technical College,
one of the largest two-year colleges in the country. Every year, the college hosts many
guest speakers and faculty members in substantive lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and
conferences on a wide variety of topics. COLLEGE PLACE is a new online video library
where you can see some of these presentations – taped and produced by students in MATC’s
Television & Video Production Associate’s Degree program. If you check it out right
now, you’ll be able to see presentations by the likes of Growing Power CEO Will Allen,
actor and environmental activist Ed Begley Jr., blues musician Jim Liban, and more, who
all appeared at recent MATC events. Again, it’s COLLEGE PLACE, just launched, in the
right-hand column of the mptv.org homepage. And it’s
a special month for yet another reason. On August 11, we’re encouraging everyone
to attend the FIELD OF HONOR SALUTE at Miller Park, celebrating World War II veterans.
This will be a once-in-a-lifetime event reuniting veterans and their families, affording us
an opportunity to honor and share their stories, spirit, and wisdom. Now, if you can’t
make it to the actual event, MPTV will be the only TV station in our area offering complete
coverage of it, underwritten by Hydrite Chemical Company. Our premiere broadcast of FIELD
OF HONOR: A SALUTE TO THE GREATEST GENERATION will be Monday night, August 20, at 7 o’clock
on Channel 10.1. Please join us for that – and actually for a number of other TV
broadcasts during August that honor our veterans and their families, including the MPTV production
STORIES FROM THE HOMEFRONT: THE WAR IN WISCONSIN and USS WISCONSIN: THE LAST BATTLESHIP.
You can find airtimes for all these programs right here on mptv.org and in our member program
guide Fine Tuning. So for August:
stay cool, meet us at the Fair, explore mptv.org, and join us for all the good things we’ve
got scheduled on Channels 10&36. And I’ll be back soon with more Thinking Inside the
Box.
