(Dr. Karla Kennedy-Hagan). Hello.
My name is Dr. Karla Kennedy-Hagan
with the School of Family and Consumer Sciences
at Eastern Illinois University.
Today, you'll have puppies barking at your kitchen door.
The reduced-fat puppy chow brings a healthier way
to eat a delicious snack.
So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
(Jennett Ryan). Hi, my name is Jennett Ryan
and I'm a senior dietetics student at
Eastern Illinois University and today I am going to be
making puppy chow.
The ingredients you'll need is Chex cereal, peanut butter,
chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and butter.
First thing you do is you take your nine cups of Chex cereal
and you could take, there's Corn Chex, Rice Chex, or there is
also whole grain Chex that you could use.
First thing you do is you measure out nine cups of it
which I have already done.
Place it in a large bowl and then you set that aside.
The next thing you do is you take 1/2 cup of reduced-fat
peanut butter, a cup of chocolate chips,
and 1/4 cup of margarine and I use reduced-fat
to reduce the fat content in the recipe.
So after you melt that for about a minute in the microwave,
make sure it's nice and mixed and you mix it in
with your nine cups of cereal.
Normally, the recipe just uses regular peanut butter
and regular butter, so I use the reduced-fat kind so it reduced
the fat content for each serving from nine grams to about
five grams and the calories went from about 210 to about 170.
Each batch you make from this recipe can make about
18 servings and they're 1/2 cup each.
Once you get that all in there you just mix it thoroughly.
I got my recipe from the Chex, most of it has the recipe on
the back of each Chex box cereal, but you can get it
online or you could use any other version
of the Chex mix recipe.
Also, in the recipe, it's already kind of low-sodium.
It only has 210 milligrams of sodium.
It has a gram of dietary fiber, three grams of protein,
and it has zero milligrams of cholesterol.
So, just make sure you get it nice and even, get all of the
chocolate mixed in there evenly.
Once you get that done, you're going to pour it into
a large container with a lid.
You're going to take 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar and you're
going to pour it all over the mixture like so.
Be sure you have a lid for it because you need to shake it
to get it all mixed up.
Shake it until it's evenly coated.
Just check to make sure it's all even.
It looks good.
To let it dry, you just take some wax paper and you just
pretty much spread it all along and it will take about maybe
10 or so minutes to thoroughly dry.
After it dries, after about 10, 15 minutes, you'll have yourself
some puppy chow.
It will look like, after it dries, you'll put it
back in a bowl, it will look a lot better.
Thank you for watching.
