RETURNING TO THE STORY OF THE
MORNING IN TERMS OF BREAKING
NEWS AND SAD NEWS 7:15, THE
DEADLY WRECK, A TRAIN AND A CAR
COLLIDED IN RICHMOND CANCELLED A
COLLEGE STUDENTS AND INJURED TWO
MORE.
THERE WERE TWO IN THE CAR AND
APPARENTLY THIS HAPPENED 1:15
THIS MORNING AND WE DO HAVE A
SPOKESPERSON, I'M TOLD WITH
SOMEBODY FROM EARLHAM COLLEGE.
MARK BLACKMAN FROM EARLHAM,
KIND ENOUGH TO TAKE TIME AWAY
FROM A BUSY MORNING.
THANKS FOR STARTING YOUR DAY
WITH US.
TELL US WHAT HAPPENED INTO LAST
NIGHT AND HOW YOU GUYS ARE
DEALING WITH IT THIS MORNING.
WELL, I REALLY CAN'T
SPECULATE ON WHAT HAPPENED EARLY
THIS MORNING WITH THE INCIDENT
WITH THE TRAIN.
BECAUSE THE POLICE ARE STILL
INVESTIGATING THAT.
WE HAVE SUSPENDED CLASSES TODAY
HERE AT EARLHAM BECAUSE OF THE
ONE STUDENT WHO WAS KILLED.
WE ALSO HAVE TWO OTHER STUDENTS
WHO WERE INJURED WHO ARE AT THE
HOSPITAL.
WE DON'T KNOW THEIR CONDITION AS
OF YET.
BUT AS I SAY WE HAVE SUSPENDED
CLASSES FOR THE DAY.
WE HAVE NOTIFIED STUDENTS THAT
ALL OF THE REAL ESTATE SOURCES
OF OUR RELIGIOUS LIFE OFFICE, OF
OUR COUNSELING SERVICE AND
STUDENT DEVELOPMENT OFFICES ARE
AT THEIR DISPOSAL TODAY.
WE'VE OPENED UP OUR MEETING
HOUSE ON CAMPUS AS WELL AS OUR
DINING HALL.
SO THAT THEY MAY GATHER IN
COMMUNITY WITH FRIENDS AS WELL
AS ANY OF THE COUNSELING
SERVICES ON CAMPUS THAT THEY
MIGHT NEED.
MARK, I HAVE TO ASK YOU,
THURSDAY NIGHT CAN PARTICULARLY
BE A BIG NIGHT OUT FOR COLLEGE
STUDENTS, ENIN THE DEPOT
DISTRICT.
ARE THEY LOOKING AT ALCOHOL
BEING INVOLVED IN THIS ACCIDENT?
I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA.
AGAIN, I DON'T WANT TO SPECULATE
ON THAT.
THE POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY
OF THAT INFORMATION.
LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT
EARLHAM.
NOT TO DIMINISH THE IMPACT THIS
WOULD HAVE ON ANY CAMPUS BUT IN
A SCHOOL OF 30,000 IT WOULD BE
FELT ONE WAY BUT TRADITIONALLY
YOU GUYS HAVE 1,000 STUDENTS ON
CAMPUS, THIS MUST BE ABSOLUTELY
WRENCHING.
WE HAVE 1200 STUDENTS ON
CAMPUS.
WE'RE A VERY TIGHTLY KNIT
RESIDENTIAL CAMPUS.
THE STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE
FACULTY MEMBERS INTERACT
TOGETHER ON VERY SIGNIFICANT,
VERY CLOSE CONTACT, CLOSE
RELATIONSHIPS.
AND ANYTIME THERE IS SOMETHING
OF, YOU KNOW, A TRAGIC NATURE ON
CAMPUS IT REALLY IS FELT AT
EVERY CORNER OF THE CAMPUS.
THIS ONE, AS YOU MIGHT WELL
IMAGINE, IS JUST ALMOST
UNFATHOMABLE OF JUST BECAUSE THE
HORRIFIC NATURE OF A TRAIN
COLLISION.
LET'S TALK ABOUT AGAIN, THIS
IS POSTED TO THE EARLHAM COLLEGE
WEBSITE THE INFORMATION WE HAVE
THIS MORNING AND THIS, AGAIN,
EARLHAM.EDU REPORTING THREE
STUDENTS STRUCK BY A TRAIN,
TRANSPORTED TO REID AND TAKEN TO
MIAMI VALLEY HOSPITAL, THAT
INDICATED THEY NEEDED MORE
TREATMENT THAN REID TO PROVIDE.
THEY ARE RELEASE HAYMANN OUT OF
CALIFORNIA THE DECEASED STUDENT.
WHAT IS THE MAKE-UP OF STUDENTS.
ARE THEY MOSTLY FROM INDIANA OR
IS IT A WIDE RANGE AND
CROSS-SECTION?
NO, WE HAVE STUDENTS FROM 44
STATES AND MORE THAN 80 FOREIGN
COUNTRIES.
IT IS AN EXTREMELY DIVERSE MIX
OF STUDENTS.
ONLY ABOUT 20% OF OUR STUDENTS
ARE FROM INDIANA.
SO MARK, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU
HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE
FAMILY OF THE STUDENT WHO DIED.
DO WE KNOW WHAT'S BEING DONE, IS
THAT FAMILY GOING TO TRAVEL HERE
TO INDIANA?
I DO NOT KNOW.
OUR PRESIDENT, DAVID DAWSON, I
BELIEVE, AS WELL AS OUR INTERIM
DEAN OF STUDENT -- EXCUSE ME,
STUDENT DEVELOPMENT, LAURA
RUCHISON, HAS BEEN IN CONTACT
WITH THE FAMILY.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEIR PLANS
ARE AT THIS TIME.
MARK BLACKMON, THANKS FOR
BEING ACCESSIBLE TO US, I KNOW
YOU HAVE A LONG DAY AHEAD AND
THE REST OF THE COLLEGE, I'M
SURE WE'LL HAVE A CREW HEADED TO
YOUR LOCATION.
I HOPE WE CAN TALK WITH YOU
AGAIN AS YOU LEARN MORE.
