Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,
and welcome to this evening's Citizenship Ceremony.
This evening's ceremony will be conducted
by His Worship Mayor Morris Hanna, OAM
and I ask you to be upstanding to welcome the mayor.
As the Mayor of Marrickville
I would like to begin by firstly welcoming you all to our community
and secondly, I would like to acknowledge that we meet today
on the traditional land of the Gadigal Aboriginal people.
Australian citizenship represents
formal membership of the community of Commonwealths of Australia.
It is a common bond involving reciprocal rights and obligations
uniting all Australians while respecting their diversity.
Persons granted Australian citizenship
enjoy this right and undertakes to accept this obligation
by pledging loyalty to Australia and its people
and by sharing their democratic beliefs
and by respecting their rights and liberties
and by upholding and obeying the law of Australia.
I ask everyone taking the oath, those with a green name tag,
to be upstanding and repeat the pledge after me.
From this time forward under God
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect,
and whose laws I will uphold and obey.
Thank you. Please be seated.
Those of you taking the affirmation, those with orange name tags,
please stand and repeat the pledge after me.
From this time forward
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect,
and whose laws I will uphold and obey.
