The thumbpick style?
Yeah, it's an odd style because...
...everybody who's correlating the thumbpick are doing...
...you know, basically the old...
Like Chet Atkins.

You know.
There's guys like Tommy Emmanuel and they do some great stuff.
They are all playing...
You're able to do a lot of bass lines and...
...melody lines simultaneously.
I've always played that way, and then just growing up...
I listened to Jerry Reed and some people.
My dad played the finger style and he did those kinds of things.
You know, the back and forth.
You get those bass lines going.

And you can also do the...

You can do all the bass lines and melody lines together.
But I've always...
When I'm playing just the rhythm, I'll use it like a pick.
Single lines, I have sort of an odd style.
I'll use a down-stroke of a thumbpick and then...
Up-up. Like Down-up, middle finger.
Then down with the thumb and up with the ring finger...
...for single lines.

And sometimes, I'll just use the pick as well.
But most of the time, if it's fast...
...like when I'm doing the...
You can see the...

You know, there's no... it's just back and forth.
Usually, you can count on the thumb starting with the down beat.
It's never an upstroke.
Thumb is always on the down.
If there's a pickup to the bar...
...then I might use a 8th note pickup with the...

It's got an up.
It never comes from the thumb. Thumb is always the down beat.
Unless you're playing...
...back and forth like that.
I'll use that and sometimes...
...down for the whole thump and stuff.
Also lot of times...
The double stop, as lot of people.
I use these 2 together.

You get that double stop.

You know, you get that...

Playing through strings at once.
Also this finger, I don't use it... I have this fake fingernail.
They are not very attractive. They're super glued on.
They are totally for practical purposes only.
You can see that they are very stiff.
They are not flimsy. Very stiff and thick.
I use this finger for pop and...
You know, if you use that...
I'm puling up with the meat of the fingernails.

You know. It's good for that.
So it's the little thing... little "bad habits"...
I've acquired over my years of guitar playing...
...since I was a kid.

Why switch now? It's worked all these years.
But I see more guys playing with it go...
"How you do that?"
Boy...
I'll say "I don't know if I'd advise you to do that now."
If you've been playing with picks for years.
I started out when I was 8 yrs old.
It's just become a natural thing.
But guys starting to switch styles...
When they've been playing guitar for 10 years or so...
Then they want to switch over, it's a very awkward thing to do.
You have that ability when you're a kid...
...to learn things faster.
Because you are more enthused and you got much more time.
That's when bulk of all learning comes in.
Your brain is developing and all that.
As a kid, I went through a lot of styles.
