URBAN SPACE AWARD NOW.
THE URBAN SPACE AWARD FOR
THE ART THAT CREATIVELY
ENGAGES AN URBAN
ENVIRONMENT.
THE CRITIC PICKING THIS
ONE IS THE EDITOR AND
CHIEF OF MET TROP POLICE
MAG ZEN AND DESIGN
MAGAZINE BASED IN NEW YORK
SO COME ON OVER AND WE
APPRECIATE YOU COMING IN.
GREAT TO YOU HAVE HERE.
THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
WE HAD YOU ON
"DAYBREAK" THIS MORNING.
WE ENJOYED TALKING TO YOU
THEN.
SO NOW WE GET TO TALK
ABOUT WHAT YOU PICKED.
NOW LET'S START WITH THE
FIRST ONE HERE.
IT WAS ON DISPLAYED IN
FRONT OF THE GRAND RAPIDS
ART MUSEUM THAT WON THIS
LAST YEAR.
THIS IS ON MONROE AVENUE.
I THOUGHT THIS WAS REALLY
INTERESTING BECAUSE SHE
SAID AND DID DOING THIS ON
THE FACT IT TAKES 10,000
HOURS TO BE AN EXPERT AT
ANYTHING.
I LOVED.
YEAH.
FOR THE REASON I LOVED IT
ACTUALLY THAT THE IT IS
SACRED TO MODERN ART AND
DESIGN AND I DIDN'T EXPECT
ANY BO BODY TO PLAY WITH
IT.
THE FACT SHE HAD THE GUTS
AND SHE HAD THE WILL POWER
AND HAD TO ADD SOMETHING
TO IT AND VERY HANDMADE,
VERY HAND DONE, VERY
CRAFTY AND THIS IS ON THE
INDUSTRIALLY PRODUCED
PIECE OF ART THAT IS
DOMINATING THAT PLAZA AND
IT ALSO MADE ME GO THERE
BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN THAT
PICTURE 1,000 TIMES AND IT
IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL IN
PICTURES BUT IN REALITY,
IT IS TERRIBLE.
THE PLAZA.
THE ?RAZ.
IT IS LOVELY AND REALLY
INTERESTING.
AND SO WE GOT IT.
BUT THEN, THE WIND WAS
BLOWING REALLY HARD.
WE WERE NEARLY BLOWN AWAY.
SO THIS IS KINDS OF --
THIS IS KIND OF THE
OVERSTATED WINDSWEPT PLAZA
OF MODERN ARC TK TURE THAT
I HAVE BEEN PLAY PLANNING
WHICH IS A COOL PLACE TO
BE.
IT REMINDED ME HOW BAD
THESE THINGS WERE DESPITE
THE BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE
AND DECIDES THE
SPERVENTION.
THAT SAVED A LOT OF WORK.
I AM SURE.
YOU ARE WATCHING RIGHT
NOW.
THANK YOU.
WE APPRECIATE IT.
ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL
CHURCH A A-FOOT LONG STEEL
CYLINDER.
I REALLY LIKE THAT ONE.
ITS WITH A SUR TO ME.
IT DIDN'T EXPECT TO LIKE
ANYTHING IN CHURCHES.
I AM SORRY.
I AM NOT RELIGIOUS BUT IT
IS DIFFICULT FOR KNOW
ENGAGE IN THAT.
I WAS UP THERE.
THERE WAS CHURCH SERVICE
GOING ON.
THIS IS SUNDAY MORNING.
IT WAS BEAUTIFUL SUNNY
DAY.
IT IS NOT EVEN A PLAZA.
IT IS A LITTLE PLACE IN
THE CHURCH.
THEN THIS IS THE SORT OF
INDUSTRIAL REMNANT RUSTING
STEEL REALLY, REALLY
SHOWING WHAT IT IS LIKE
NOW AND IT WAS VERY
CONSTRAINED AND IT WAS NOT
THE OVERDONE STUFF THAT
YOU SEE ALL OVER THE
PLACE, BUT IT WAS WELL
THOUGHT OUT, VERY MINIMAL,
THEN WAS THIS HELIUM
CONTAINER IN THE MIDDLE
WHICH YOU COULD HIT AND
MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A
CHIME.
RIGHT.
SO IT WAS VERY MUCH OF ITS
PLACE AND I REALLY LIKE
IT.
THEN AS I LOOKED UP.
I SAW THIS.
IT WAS REALLY BEAUTIFUL
ALMOST TWO OF THEM HAD A
RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH
OTHER.
THEY WORK WELL TOGETHER.
THIS INDUSTRIAL PIECE AND
THE CHURCH SPIRE WERE
SOMEHOW WERE ONE AND MADE
ME HOW EFFECTIVE A PUBLIC
ART PLACE IN A PUBLIC
PLACE CAN BE.
WE HAVE LEE MINUTES
LEFT HERE, SUSAN.
WE'LL MOVE ALONG AS
QUICKLY AS WE CAN.
THIS ONE, THIS IS IN THE
PARK, NINE STAINLESS STEEL
BIRDS THAT WEIGHS ABOUT
200 POUNDS AND HAS HAS A
WINGSPAN OF 12 TEAT.
THIS IS SPECTACULAR.
I REALLY LOVE COMING AT
TRIT THE ENTRANCE OF THE
PARK AND I SAW THIS ARRAY
OF HUGE BIRDS.
RIGHT.
THEN I WALKED AROUND IT.
I SAW PATTERNS THE BIRDS
WERE MAKING.
IT WALKED UP THOUGH MOUND
THAT SEPARATES THE MUSEUM
AND THE PARK AND THEN, AND
SO, THEN, AND I LIKED IT
ESPECIALLY BUS IT IS A
VERY HEAVY, VERY SORT OF
SUBSTANTIAL PIECE OF
SCULPTURE BUT THE SAME
TIME IT DOES MINIMAL
INVASION TO THE LAND.
SO I KEPT THINKING ABOUT
IT AS PLA PLACE THAT
DEFOONS THAT PLACE REALLY
WELL AND HOPING IT WOULD
WELL AND HOPING IT WOULD
TIME.
INSTALLATION BY RENEE
FULTON PARK, PAPER SCRAPS
HANGING IN THE PARK
GARAGE.
THAT IS INTERESTING.
IT REMINDED ME ANOTHER
KIND OF PUBLIC SPACE THAT
WE DON'T COUNT IN THE
CITIES.
BECAUSE THAT STAIRWELL IS
KIND OF PROTECTED PUBLIC
SPACE IN URBAN ENVIRONMENT
WITH A LOT OF CAUSE SO IT
CALLED MY ATTENTION TO
REALLY BAD SOLUTION FOR
URBAN PARKING AND THE
STUPID PARKING XY RANGES
THAT ARE PROPPING UP OVER
THE PLACE AND REALLY UGLY
AND SHE CALLED ATTENTION
IT TO IN A VERY BEAUTIFUL
ALMOST LAZY WAY AND I
THOUGHT, WE SHOULD LOOK AT
THOSE THINGS.
THAT IS FUN.
ONCE AGAIN, MAYOR
HARTWELL.
GREAT REACTION.
THIS IS THE GRAND RIVER
MADE FROM TREE BRANCHES.
WELL, I LOVED THAT ONE.
IT USED THINK RIVER.
IT USED THE RAPIDS.
IT SHOWED HORSED THAT WERE
ALMOST LIKE LIFE LIKE BUT
SCULPTURAL AND REMINDED ME
OF ALL THOSE WESTERN
MOVIES THAT I SAW AS CHILD
OF PEOPLE CROSSING RIVERS
ON THEIR HORSES, THE
INDIANS AND THE COY BOIST
ON THEIR HORSES, AND IT
SORT OF BROUGHT BACK
HISTORY AND THE IDEA OF
THE RAPID, THE GRAND
RAPID, THEN I THOUGHT, YOU
KNOW, THIS COULD BE,
FAVORITE FOR A LONG TIME.
THESE THINGS COULD
BIODEGRADE AND PLOT DONE
THE RIVER.
WON BE HARMING ANYONE.
OH, WOW.
BEAUTIFUL DESIGNS ALL
AROUND.
THEY ARE ALL PLAYING
TOGETHER SO WELL.
WE APPRECIATE YOU COMING
IN HERE, SUSAN TO SHARE
YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE
SYMBOLISM THAT GOES ON
BETWEEN THESE TWO PLACES.
BY THE WAY, CITY
