South Korea is hosting a nuclear-security summit this month with more than 40
heads of state and government officials slated to attend. The importance of this
meeting cannot be overstated because of the recent nuclear accident in Japan and the
nuclear threat from North Korea. The summit’s agenda is focused on specific
guidelines for nuclear safety and measures to prevent nuclear terrorism. The first
nuclear-security summit was held in Washington D.C. in 2010 and the U.N. hosted
the second one in 2011.
The Japanese government has authorized its military to shoot down any incoming
missiles within its airspace. This announcement is in response to North Korea’s
intended launch of a “satellite” carrying rocket in the middle of April, coinciding
with the birthday of Kim Il Sung. U.S. officials called the intended launch a “direct
violation” of international commitments by North Korea, which may halt the planned
shipment of food aid to the impoverished and isolated country. South Korean
officials labeled the rocket test a grave provocation that threatens the peace and
stability of the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia.
China and Russia have joined the rest of the world in condemning North Korea’s
planned missile launch. Russia used especially tough rhetoric in warning that the
rocket test could jeopardize the revival of the long-stalled 6-party talks.
Office layouts have changed over the years but the new trend is towards open space
and the elimination of private offices. People like to work in different modes so office
space must accommodate them. Martha Choe contributed to the design of the Gates
Foundation’s headquarters for its 1,000 employees.
Body image is an important concern for everyone but especially those going through
puberty. Former Miss America Kirsten Haglund suffered from anorexia in her early
teens but recovered to become the youngest woman to win the prestigious beauty
contest. An estimated 10 million women and 1 million men in the U.S. battle
anorexia or bulimia. These disorders have the highest mortality of any mental
illness.
