I'M PETTY OFFICER BRANDIE WILLS WITH YOUR HEADLINES FROM AROUND THE FLEET.
DEFENSE SECRETARY LEON PANETTA ANNOUNCED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE JANUARY 24TH, THAT HE HAS
EXPANDED THE COMBAT ROLES THAT WOMEN CAN FILL.
SELECT POSITIONS IN GROUND COMBAT UNITS WILL BE OPENED TO WOMEN FOLLOWING SERVICE REVIEWS
AND THE CONGRESSIONAL NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES.
ALL REVIEWS MUST BE COMPLETE BY MAY 15TH OF THIS YEAR FOR FULL IMPLEMENTATION BY JANUARY
OF 2016.
USS BONHOMME RICHARD DEPARTED JANUARY 24TH AND WILL EMBARK MARINES OF THE 31ST MARINE
EXPEDITIONARY UNIT FOR A DEPLOYMENT IN THE 7TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS FOR EXERCISE
COBRA GOLD.
THE EXERCISE IS AN ANNUAL U.S. AND KINGDOM-OF-THAILAND EVENT TO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO RAPIDLY
DEPLOY A JOINT TASK FORCE TO CONDUCT COMBINED OPERATIONS AT SEA AND ASHORE.
