Oxygen is essential for the proper functioning of our bodies
From the brain and heart, and to the smallest strands of hair
Our body is in constant work
It consumes oxygen continuously and produces carbon dioxide, that must be removed from the body
Breathing is an automatic process, in which oxygen is consumed and carbon dioxide is removed
Let's see which parts of our body are involved in respiration, and the functions of each
The lung is an essential organ, and the motor of respiration
It is an elastic organ, that expands to take in air and compress to expel it
The lung is found inside the thoracic cavity, formed by bones of the ribs, sternum and spine
and by the respiratory muscles and diaphragm, that acts as a pump that expands and compresses the lungs
The nose plays an important role in respiration, it is in charge of taking in the air
It also has three other important functions, rid the incoming air of small particles, humidify, and warm it
This clean air passes through the trachea and arrives at the bronchia and the lungs
The air gets clean again thanks to glands that produce mucus that traps particles and germs, that will be expelled to the trachea
The smallest bronchioles are in sack-like structures called alveoli that form part of the lung
They are in charge of holding the air and interchanging oxygen for carbon dioxide with the blood
The transportation of oxygen through the blood is carried out by red blood cells that act like shuttles
Delivering oxygen throughout the body
