FILM.
>>> THEN WE WILL HEAD TO THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART.
IN HIS OWN TIME WORHOL PUSHED THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT DEFINED A
WORK OF ART CHALLENGING EXPECTATIONS WITH HIS OWN SEND
OUT OF POPULAR CULTURE.
ONE OF THE 60 ARTISTS IN THIS SHOW IS NONE OTHER THAN HIM.
>> I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION EXHIBITION.

COMBINING HISTORY, ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY "ECHOES OF THE
PAST" CREATES A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF A PLACE OF
GREAT BEAUTY.
>> THE EXHIBITION WILL BE ON VIEW THROUGH JANUARY 6 OF 2013.
>>> LET'S GET RIGHT TO TONIGHT'S FEATURE PRESENTATION.
>> CHINESE ARTIST IS ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC ARTISTS OF OUR
TIME.
AMONG HIS MANY PROJECTS HE HELPED DESIGN THE BIRD NEST
STADIUM AND THEN REPUDIATED THOSE OLYMPICS CALLING THEM A
FAKE SMILE FOR FOREIGNERS.
SOON THEREAFTER HE EMBARKED ON A DANGEROUS CAMPAIGN.
BEHIND THE DEATHS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN THE 2008
EARTHQUAKE, A VERY TIGHTLY HELD STATE SECRET.
IN DECEMBER 2008 FILM MAKER BEGAN FOLLOWING HIM WITH HER
CAMERA CAPTURING THE COMPULSION TO ACT DESPITE THE RISKS.
SHE CONTINUED SHOOTING FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND THE RESULT IS THE
STRIKING NEW DOCUMENTARY.
>> THEY ARE FORCING TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS.
IF YOU GAVE UP IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT.
YOU DON'T CLAIM A LAWSUIT.
NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN.
WE HAVE TO PUT OUR EFFORT.
>> ALLISON, IN 2006 YOU GRADUATED FROM BROWN WITH A
DEGREE IN HISTORY.
TWO SHORT YEARS LATER YOU ARE FOLLOWING CHINA'S MOST FAMOUS
ARTIST ALL OVER THE PLACE WITH YOUR CAMERA.
HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
>> I GRADUATED FROM UNDER GRAD AND APPLIED WITH A TON OF
DIFFERENT GRANTS AND DIFFERENT FELLOWSHIPS AND TRYING TO GO
EVERYWHERE, BERLIN, LONDON, ASIA.
NOTHING PANNED OUT.
AND SO I SAID FINE I'M GOING TO MAKE MY OWN KIND OF OPPORTUNITY
TO DO THIS.
AND I HAD A FRIEND WHO HAD FAMILY IN SHANGHAI AND SHE WAS
PLANNING TO VISIT THEM AND I ASKED IF I COULD TAG ALONG.
>> HOW DID YOU MAKE THE INITIAL COLLECTION?
>> MY FRIEND WAS CURATING EXHIBITION OF HIS PHOTOS FOR A
GALLERY IN BEIJING.
SHE SAID THERE IS A GREAT STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS.
THEY ARE ACTUALLY HIS PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEW YORK OF HIS
TIME SPENT HERE IN THE 1980s.
SHE SAID IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE HAVE A VIDEO.
WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE IT?
I SAID SURE.
I JUST BOUGHT A CAMERA.
THE FIRST DAY I MET HIM MY RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM HAS BEEN I
AM FILMING HIM.
I REALLY WAS HOOKED BECAUSE I WAS SO STRUCK BY WHAT AN AMAZING
CHARACTER HE WAS.
>> HE WAS ONE OF THE DESIGNERS OF THE BIRD'S NEST, THE FAMOUS
STADIUM USED IN THE 2008 OLYMPICS.
BUT THEN HE TURNED ON IT AND VERY PUBLICLY BOYCOTTED THE
WHY DID HE CHANGE HIS MIND?
OLYMPICS.
>> WHEN I ASKED HIM ABOUT IT HE DESCRIBED THE MOMENT WHEN CHINA
GOT THE OLYMPIC BID.
HE SAID IT WAS A MOMENT OF HOPE WHERE PEOPLE WERE HOPEFUL AND
MAYBE HE WAS HOPEFUL, TOO, THAT CHINA MAYBE WAS GOING TO OPEN UP
AND ENGAGE WITH INTERNATIONAL VALUES AND ALL OF THE THINGS
THAT THEY SAID WERE GOING TO HAPPEN BECAUSE OF THE OLYMPICS.
HE SAID HE WAS AT A FRIEND'S HOUSE AND CAUGHT A PROGRAM ON
TELEVISION ABOUT THE GAMES COMING UP AND HOW THEY WERE LIKE
WE ADVISE LOCAL PEOPLE TO STAY AT HOME AND TRYING TO KEEP
HE HAD A LOT OF OUT OF TOWN AND FOREIGN ASSISTANTS IN HIS
THINGS COOL.
HE SAW SO MANY THINGS LIKE THIS DOESN'T SEEM LIKE ANYTHING IS
STUDIO.
IN ANY CASE TO BOYCOTT THE GAMES SO PUBLICLY REALLY DID PUT HIM
CHANGING.
ON THE MAP.
>> ONE OF THE PEOPLE YOU INTERVIEW IN THE FILM SAYS THAT
HE WAS AN ARTISTIC REBEL WHO BECAME A POLITICAL REBEL BUT
OTHERS CLAIM OR AAPPLY THAT FOR EYE ART, POLITICS ARE ALWAYS
>> THERE WAS THE QUESTION OF ART VERSUS ACTIVISM AND POLITICS.
INTERMINGLED.
WHO HE IS TODAY THE INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL OF FREEDOM
OF EXPRESSION AND DISSENT HE BECAME THAT.
I DIDN'T KNOW IT BUT I COULD SENSE THAT THIS WAS A MOMENT
WHEN I HAD A LOT OF QUESTIONS.
IS HIS ART BECOMING MORE POLITICAL?
ARE WE SEEING HIM ABANDON ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES FOR
POLITICAL ACTIVITIES.
SOMEONE WHO SPENDS SO MUCH TIME ON TWITTER AND IS A PROLIFIC
ARTIST YOU HAVE TO WONDER WHAT IT GOING ON SO IT WAS A
FOR ME THE QUESTION DID GO AWAY BECAUSE EVERYTHING HE WAS DOING
QUESTION.
FELL UNDER THE UMBRELLA AS HIS ACTIVITIES AS AN ARTIST.
IT IS ABOUT ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATION.
>> CAN YOU GIVE US SOME EXAMPLES OF HOW HIS POLITICAL THINKING
ARE MANIFESTED IN HIS ART WORK?
>> THERE IS ONE CALLED REMEMBERING WHICH IS MADE OUT OF
OVER 9,000 CHILDREN'S BACKPACKS THAT COVERED THE FACADE WHERE HE
HAD THE LARGEST SOLO SHOW OF HIS LIFE IN 2009.
THIS IS RELATED TO AN EVENT ON A LOT OF PEOPLE'S MINDS, THE
EARTHQUAKE AND HIS PARTICULAR INTERESTS WHICH WAS THE DEATH OF
SCHOOL CHILDREN IN POORLY CONSTRUCTED GOVERNMENT
WHEN IT DOES THE BACKPACKS ALL TOGETHER IT SPELLS OUT A
BUILDINGS.
SENTENCE TOLD TO HIM BY A MOTHER OF AN EARTHQUAKE VICTIM.
THEN SHE SAID SHE LIVED HAPPILY ON THE EARTH FOR SEVEN YEARS.
FOR ME IT CHILLS WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE
HE COULD HAVE PICKED ANY SLOGAN AND HE HAS ANOTHER WORK ONLINE
PUT ANYTHING.
AND SAYS ASK THE GOVERNMENT.
HE HAS BEEN MORE DIRECT CRITICAL THINGS.
HE CHOSE TO BRING IT BACK TO ONE LIFE, ONE MOTHERER AND AN
INDIVIDUAL KIND OF BEAUTIFUL THING THAT WAS SAID.
>> AT ONE POINT SOMEBODY IN YOUR FILM SAYS HE IS DIFFERENT THAN
MOST IF NOT ALL OTHER ARTISTS IN CHINA AND HE IS DEFINITELY NOT
PART OF THE SYSTEM.
HE IS JUST HIMSELF.
WHAT WERE THE INFLUENCES THAT MADE HIM SO DIFFERENT?
>> THE WAY HE WILL START WITH MY FATHER.
HE WAS BORN TO ONE OF CHINA'S MOST FAMOUS MODERN POETS.
HE FOUGHT FOR THE COMMUNIST SIDE DURING REVOLUTION CIVIL WAR
FOUNDING OF THE COUNTRY.
AS MANY LIKE HIM DID INTELLECTUALS AND ARTISTS
SUFFERED AFTER MAO'S HUNDRED FLOWERS MOVEMENT KIND OF LETTING
PEOPLE VOICE THEIR OPINIONS AND THEN A BIG CRACK DOWN WHICH FOR
HIM CAME RIGHT AS HIS SON WAS BORN AND HE WAS SENT INTO
DOMESTIC EXILE IN FAR WESTERN CHINA.
HE HAD THIS JUXTAPOSITION OF A FATHER WHO STUDIED PAINTING IN
PARIS AND IS THIS MAN OF LETTERS AND GREAT CULTURE AND WHO IS
RESPECTED AMONG SOCIETY BUT GREW UP SEEING HIM AS AN ENEMY OF THE
PEOPLE AND A TOILET CLEANER.
>> HUMILIATED, BEATEN IN PUBLIC.
FOR SOME PEOPLE THAT WOULD MAKE THEM MORE FEARFUL OF THAT.
IT WOULD MAKE THEM WANT TO STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS.
>> HE HAS KNOWN FROM AN EARLY AGE JUST EXACTLY WHAT A STATE
POWER AND CERTAINLY IN CHINA THE COMMUNIST PARTY'S POWER IS
CAPABLE OF.
>> AT ONE POINT IN THE FILM RIGHT AFTER THE GOVERNMENT TEARS
DOWN THE SHANGHAI STUDIO THAT THE GOVERNMENT RECENTLY BUILT
FOR HIM HE SAYS WHAT IS NEXT.
WHAT DID HE THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM AND WHAT DID YOU
THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM?
>> WHAT'S NEXT MEANT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
>> WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?
>> APRIL 3 HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO THE AIRPORT GOING TO HONG KONG
AND AS HE IS GOING THROUGH SECURITY WITH HIS ASSISTANT HE
GETS PULLED ASIDE ALONE.
AND HE ESSENTIALLY DISAPPEARED FOR THE NEXT 81 DAYS.
>> YOU WERE EDITING THE FILM.
>> IT WAS REALLY SURREAL AND A REALLY SCARY TIME.
I GET ASKED A LOT IF I WAS SCARED.
THOSE 81 DAYS WERE THE SCARIEST.
I WAS HERE IN NEW YORK.
>> WHAT IS HIS LIFE LIKE NOW?
>> HE IS KIND OF ALWAYS PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES EVER SINCE HE HAS
BEEN RELEASED WHERE THERE WAS A PERIOD WHERE HE WASN'T GOING
AFTER MAYBE TWO MONTHS HE BROKE THAT BARRIER.
ONLINE.
HE STARTED DOING A LITTLE BIT OF INTERVIEWS.
AND WITHIN LIKE THREE MONTHS HE WROTE AN ARTICLE THAT WAS CALLED
BEIJING IS A NIGHTMARE CITY.
>> SO HE'S BACK.
>> I ASKED HIM AT THAT TIME BECAUSE THAT WAS BEFORE HE HAD
DONE ANY ON THE RECORD INTERVIEWS ABOUT HIS TIME IN
DETENTION WHICH THERE ARE SOME OUT NOW.
I SAID DID YOU DO THAT BECAUSE THE RULE WAS YOU CAN'T GIVE AN
INTERVIEW AND YOU THOUGHT IF I HE GAVE ME A KNOWING SMILE.
>> ARE PEOPLE IN CHINA ABLE TO SEE YOUR FILM?
>> I DON'T THINK THERE IS A CHANCE OF AN OFFICIAL
DISTRIBUTION IN MAINLAND CHINA.
I WAS QUOTED IN A STORY SAYING THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WERE
EXCITED ABOUT THE STORY TO BE BOOTLEGGED.
SO MUCH CENSORSHIP STARTS WITH SELF CENSORSHIP AND RELIES ON
BUILDING THOSE KINDS OF CULTURE WHERE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HERE IS
WHERE THE LINES ARE.
THE GOOD NEWS IS SELF CENSORSHIP YOU HOLD THE KEY TO THAT BECAUSE
ALTHOUGH POWERFUL ENTITIES CAN DO ANYTHING AS WE SEE CERTAINLY
IN CHINA AND FRANKLY ANYWHERE POWERS CAN EXERT A LOT OF
CONTROL AND INFLUENCE AND HARM ON AN INDIVIDUAL.
BUT THE ONE THING YOU CAN'T BE STOPPED FROM IS LIKE BETWEEN
YOUR THOUGHT AND SAYING IT OR BETWEEN YOUR THOUGHT AND TAKING
LIKE THAT TIME IS ALL UP TO YOU AND YOU CAN DO THAT.
ACTION.
AND I THINK THAT'S SORT OF THE OVERALL KIND OF MESSAGE OF THE
>> CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FILM.
FILM.
IT IS A WONDERFUL FILM AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING WITH US.
>> TOTALLY.
>>> EXHIBITIONS ARE CURRENTLY ON VIEW HERE IN NEW YORK AT THE
THANK YOU.
MARY BOON E GALLERY.
HE CANNOT ATTEND ANY OF THESE SHOWS BECAUSE THE CHINESE
GOVERNMENT HAS CONTINUED TO RETAIN HIS PASSPORT.

>>> FOR DECADES CRITICS HAVE OBSERVED ANDY WORHOL'S IMPACT.
NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME WORHOL'S ART IS ON VIEW ALONG SIDE THE
ARTISTS WHO HAVE RESPONDED AND REACTED TO HIS WORK.
♪♪
>>> THE EXHIBITION IS MEANT TO BE A LOOK AT WORHOL AND HIS
♪♪
IMPACT ON CONTEMPORARY ART OF THE LAST 50 YEARS.
WORHOL WAS WILLING TO EMBRACE ANYTHING AND THAT IS THE WORHOL
>> IT IS A VERY LARGE SHOW SO THERE ARE 157 WORKS TOTAL AND 51
EFFECT.
OF THOSE ARE BY WORHOL.
>> IN EACH GROUPING OF WORKS THERE WILL BE A WORHOL OR TWO
AND A GROUP OF WORKS BY OTHER ARTISTS.
EACH GROUPING IS MEANT TO INTRODUCE OTHER APPROACHES TO
WHAT WORHOL SET OUT.
>> THE FIRST SECTION IS A VERY LARGE SECTION CALLED DAILY NEWS.
CONSTANTLY LOOKING AT THE CURRENT NEWS TO THE NEWSPAPER,
TO MAGAZINES.
>> WORHOL'S SOURCES WERE SO OFTEN THE SUBJECTS BUT ALSO FROM
THE DAILY NEWS HE TOOK DISASTERS AND HE WOULD MAKE PAINTINGS
BASED ON THAT.
>> THEN THAT SECTION MOVES INTO AN AREA THAT HAS TO DO WITH
AMERICAN CONSUMERISM AND LOGOS AND HOW OTHER ARTISTS HAVE
APPROPRIATED THOSE IMAGES.
>> FOR ME ONE OF THE EXCITING THINGS ABOUT THE SHOW IS TO SEE
WORHOL JUXTAPOSED WITH, FOR EXAMPLE, AN ARTIST WHO CARRIES
THE WORHOL EXAMPLE INTO VERY POLITICAL DIMENSIONS.
HERE HE IS USING THE PACKAGING TO MAKE A POLITICAL STATEMENT
ABOUT WHERE CIGARETTES ARE MADE.
THERE ARE LOTS OF SURPRISES LIKE THAT WHERE ARTISTS CAN CARRY THE
WORHOL EXAMPLE.
>> ANOTHER VERY LARGE SECTION IS THE PORTRAIT SECTION.
WE CALL IT CELEBRITY AND POWER.
FOR ME THE 1964 TURQUOISE IS SUCH AN ICONIC IMAGE AND IT IS
SO BEAUTIFUL TO BEGIN WITH.
IT IS ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC IN TERMS OF HIS TURQUOISE
I LOVE THE FACT THAT MARILYN WAS THE VEIL THAT SHE WORE OVER
COLORATION.
NORMA JEAN AND WORHOL UNDERSTOOD THERE WAS A BEING UNDER THE
BLOND HAIR.
>> IN 1960 IN NEW YORK THERE WERE ALMOST NO PEOPLE MAKING
WE HAVE WORHOL'S PORTRAIT TO EXEMPLIFY WORHOL CELEBRATING
PORTRAITS.
ARTISTS.
BEHIND ME IS THE FAMOUS PORTRAIT BY CHUCK CLOSE.
THERE IS ALSO A PHOTOGRAPH MADE.
THERE IS A PAINTING BY ALEX CASS.
THIS GIVES YOU A SENSE OF HOW WITH WORHOL AS AN EXAMPLE THINGS
EXPAND OUT AND BECOME VERY EXCITING.
>> THERE IS ANOTHER SECTION CALLED CLEAR STUDIES WHICH IS
ABOUT ASSUMED PERSONALITIES AND THE IDEA THAT IDENTITY
ESPECIALLY SEXUAL IDENTITY IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE ALTERRED
AND USED IN A KIND OF FLUID AND SHIFTING AND CHANGING WAY.
AND THEN LAST SECTIONS ARE REALLY MORE ABOUT WORHOL
THERE IS A SECTION CALLED CONSUMING IMAGES ABOUT
TECHNIQUE.
ABSTRACTION AND REPETITION.
IT BEGINS WITH A WONDERFUL IMAGE OF THE MONA LISA.
THE REST OF THE GALLERY IS ABOUT HOW OTHER ARTISTS HAVE ABSORBED
THE TECHNIQUE.
AND THEN THERE IS A SECTION CALLED NO BOUNDARIES THAT HAS TO
DO WITH THE WONDERFUL EXPLOSION OF THE WHOLE PHENOMENON AND THE
IDEA THAT ART CAN BE ANYTHING.
>> ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT DOING THIS EXHIBITION WAS
TO THINK ABOUT HOW ALIVE THE LEGACY IS RIGHT NOW.
IF YOU COMPARE THEM TO THE ANDY WORHOL FILMS YOU REALIZE HE IS A
DESCENDANT OF ANDY WORHOL.
A SHOW OF WORK WAS MET BY UNBELIEVABLE PRAISE.
IF A CONTEMPORARY ARTIST IS MOVED BY ANDY WORHOL AND THAT
ARTIST IS SO CELEBRATED THEN THE EFFECT IS STILL WITH US.
>> OUR IDEA ABOUT THE EXHIBITION WAS NOT SIMPLY AN IDEA OF DIRECT
INFLUENCE BUT THE IMPACT THROUGH THE CULTURE OF WORHOL BUT NOT
WITH THE IDEA THAT THIS WAS A DEFINITIVE SHOW.
I HOPE PEOPLE THINK ABOUT WHERE HIS IMPACT GOES BEYOND THE
GALLERY AND HAVE A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS WHEN THEY NEXT GO TO
GALLERIES OR TO A DEPARTMENT STORE OR FLIP THROUGH A MAGAZINE
OR SEARCH THE WEB AND HOW WORHOL'S WORLD SEEMED EVER
PRESENT.
