>> HELLO!
HOW IS EVERYBODY DOING?
>> GREAT.
>> FANTASTIC.
HELLO AND WELCOME TO EVERYONE IN
THE ROOM AND EVERYONE JOINING US
VIA TELECAST.
I'M TODD PARK, AND WE'RE
DELIGHTED TO BE HERE TO
CELEBRATE THE WINNERS OF THE
SECOND ROUND OF HHS INNOVATES
CONTEST.
EVERYONE HERE GENUINELY IS A
WINNER.
ALL SIX TEAMS ARE AMAZING.
YOU'VE DONE INCREDIBLE WORK AND
WE CELEBRATE ALL OF YOU AND THE
SUPER COOL STUFF UH YOU'VE DONE.
THERE ARE AMAZING THINGS GOING
ON AT HHS AND THE INCREDIBLE
PEOPLE BEHIND THIS.
THIS CONTEST WAS CREATED LAST
YEAR BY THE SECONDARY AND BY
BILL, AND THE HHS INNOVATION
COUNCIL TO RECOGNIZE AND REWARD
SUPER AWESOME INNOVATION ACROSS
THE DEPARTMENT.
THE CONTEST IN TODAY'S EVENT
EMBODY THE SPIRIT OF OPEN
GOVERNMENT AND OPEN INNOVATION
ENGAGING OUR ENTIRE WORKFORCE
AND UNLOCKING THE ENTIRE
EMPLOYEE BASTE TO ADVANCE THE
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT.
IN THE SECOND ROUND, WITH WE HAD
87 NEW INNOVATIONS.
THESE INNOVATIONS COVER AT BROAD
RANGE OF TOPICS INCLUDING
PROCESS AND TECH NOBLG CHANGE,
NEW COLLABORATIONS.
THEY CAME FROM NEARLY EVERY
AGENCY WITHIN HHS.
WE PUT FORTH THE BEST 25
INNOVATIONS FOR VOTING BY THE
ENTIRE HHS COMMUNITY.
OUR EMPLOYEES REALLY ACTIVELY
INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS.
OVER 10,000 VOTES WERE CAST.
SOME AGENCIES WERE ACTIVE IN
VOTING.
THE ADMINISTRATION ON AGING AT
31% OF ITS EMPLOYEES VOTE.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AOA.
BASED ON THE VOTING TANTD HHS
COMMUNITY'S INPUT T SECRETARY
HAS CHOSEN SIX FINALISTS AND
THREE TOPICS WITHIN THOSE POOL
OF SIX FINALISTS.
THESE INNOVATIONS COVER KEY
AREAS OF IMPORTANCE TO THE
DEPARTMENT AND DEMONSTRATE HOW
EMPLOYEES CAN DRIVE INNOVATION
TO HELP US BETTER SERVE THE
AMERICAN PEOPLE.
BUT TODAY'S MORE THAN JUST ABOUT
ANNOUNCING WINNERS AND HANDING
OUT HARDWARE AND CASH AND
WHATNOT.
IT'S ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO
CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF
INNOVATION AT HHS.
SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON THE AMAZING
THINGS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE
HERE AND TO ENCOURAGE YET MORE
RISK TAKING, YET MORE INNOVATION
TO BETTER SERVE THE AMERICAN
PEOPLE.
AND TO HELP US DO THAT, WE HAVE
A A VERY SPECIAL GUEST JOINING
US.
STRAIGHT FROM SILICONE VALLEY,
DEAN HOVIE, HE'S AN ENTREPRENEUR
WHO'S FOUNDED ELEVEN COMPANIES
AND LED DEVELOPMENT OF DOZENS OF
INNOVATIONS INCLUDE APPLE MOUSE.
WE'RE LOIN JOINED BY THE
LEADERSHIP OF EACH OF THE
WINNING AGENCIES WE'D LIKE TO
CELEBRATE.
IHS, ARK, NIH, FDA, CDC,
SECRETARY FOR HEALTH, SECRETARY
FOR ADMINISTRATION.
NOW WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, PLEASE
WELCOME OUR SPONSOR AND
COCHAMPION, SECRETARY KATHLEEN
SAVALIUS.
[APPLAUSE]
>> GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYBODY, AND
I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE CLAIM
FORKER THIS WONDERFUL ENERGY AND
EFFORT AROUND INNOVATION, BUT IT
WON'T COME AS A GREAT SURPRISE
TO MANY OF YOU THIS, IS TODD
PARK'S GENIUS.
I WANT TO THANK HIM NOT ONLY FOR
THESE GREAT IDEAS BUT AS HIS
INCREDIBLE LEADERSHIP HERE AT
HHS.
I JUST WANT TO PUT TODAY INTO
LITTLE PERSPECTIVE FOR DEAN AND
FOR SOME OF YOU I DON'T GET TO
SEE ON A REGULAR BASIS.
I'VE BEEN SPENTDING WAY TOO MUCH
TIME THESE DAYS WITH CON TESHS
HEARINGS ON THE HEAL AND UP
LATHE HELPING RECOVERY AND ON
GOING CRISIS IN JAPAN AND VI TO
TELL YOU THIS, IS THE MOST FUN
I'VE HAD IN A VERY LONG TIME.
[APPLAUSE]
THIS IS REALLY FABULOUS.
BECAUSE IT'S A GREAT SNAPSHOT OF
THE KIND OF AMAZING ENERGY AND
IDEAS AND WORK THAT GOES ON IN
THIS AGENCY EACH AND EVERY DAY,
AND, YOU KNOW, YOU REPRESENT IN
THE SIX TEAMS KIND OF THE BEST
OF THE BEST, BUT JUST THE IDEAS
THAT ARE FLOWING AROUND IN THE
85 PROJECTS THAT WERE SUBMITTED
AND THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE A
PROJECT IN THE PIPELINE AND
AREN'T QUITE READY FOR PRIME
THYM
THYME, THAT ENERGY GOES ON EVERY
DAY IN THIS OFFICE.
I'M PLEASED TO BE JOINING BILL
AND NED AND TERRIFIC AGENCY
HEADS AND OTHERS FOR THIS
IMPORTANT COMPETITION.
I WANT TO THANK THE AGENCY
LEADERS FOR RECOGNIZING THAT
THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO
CONTINUALLY DRIVE QUALITY
IMPROVEMENT HERE AT HHS.
NOW, EARLIER THIS YEAR IN HIS
STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS,
PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID THE FIRST
STEP IN WINNING THE FUTURE IS
ENCOURAGING AMERICAN INNOVATION,
AND HERE AT HHS, WE DIDN'T NEED
TO WAIT FOR THIS CALL TO ACTION
IN JANUARY BECAUSE HHS IS REALLY
ALL ABOUT INNOVATIONS, WHETHER
IT'S NIH OR FDA WORK IN
DEVELOPING CURES AND TREATMENTS
OF THE FUTURE, TO CMS SUPPORTING
NEW MODELS OF HEALTH CARE TO
IMPROVE PATIENT SAFETY AND
REDUCE COSTS, INNOVATION GOES ON
EACH AND EVERY DAY IN THIS
DEPARTMENT, AND IT'S NOT JUST IN
ONE AGENCY OR ONE DIVISION, IT'S
DEPARTMENTS, IT'S AGENCIES
THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DEPARTMENT
FIGURING OUT WAYS THAT WE CAN BE
SMARTER, WE CAN BE MORE
EFFICIENT AND DELIVER BETTER
CARE AND SERVICES.
SO EACH AND EVERY DAY, I KNOW
THIS GOES ON AND HAVING AN
OPPORTUNITY TO HIGHLIGHT THAT
GREAT WORK IS REALLY SO
EXCITING.
SO WE'RE HERE TODAY RECOGNIZING
SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL NEW
IDEAS THAT WE HAVE.
THE COMPETITION IS A KEY PART OF
THE PRESIDENT'S OPEN GOVERNMENT
INITIATIVE, AND I THINK THAT IT
WOULD COME AS A GREAT SURPRISE
TO SOME THAT HERE IN ONE OF THE
LARGEST AGENCIES, WE ARE REALLY
A, UM, A CONSTANT CHURN OF NEW
AND INNOVATIVE WAYS TO DO
BUSINESS.
THE PRESIDENT AND I BOTH SHARE A
VIEW THAT GOVERNMENT SERVES THE
PEOPLE MOST EFFECTIVELY WHEN
EVER EMPLOYEE IS HEART -- HEARD
AND THEY KNOW THOSE VIEW UHS ARE
VALUES.
THE CHALLENGES WE FACE TODAY,
THEY ARE NUMS YOU ROUS.
LOTS OF NEW WORKLOAD
REQUIREMENTS AND BUDGET TONES,
WE CAN'T AFFORD TO WASTE THE
TALENT OF ANY OF OUR EMPLOYEES,
AND THE COMPETITION IS ONE OF
THE WAYS THAT WE WANT TO TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF CAPTURING THE BEST
IDEAS, T PUTTING THEM INTO
ACTION, HELPING THEM GROW AND
ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO CONTINUE
TO THINK ABOUT WAYS THAT WE CAN
DO BETTER.
ONE OF THE FINALISTS FROM LAST
YEAR'S HHS INNOVATES
COMPETITION, FOR EXAMPLE, THE
TEXT FOR BABY PROGRAM, WHICH
USING MOBILE PHONE TECHNOLOGY TO
REACH HARD-TO-REACH POPULATIONS
WITH IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT
PRENATAL AND BIRTH CARE, JUST
SINCE THAT PROGRAM LAUNCH AT
YEAR AGO, ENROLLMENT BY MOTHERS
HAS GROWN PERHAPSLY.
WE HAVE ABOUT 150 THOUSAND
MOTHERS ENROLL IN THE THE
PROGRAM IN VERY DIFFICULT AREAS
AND VERY VULNERABLE POPULATIONS,
AND IN NOVEMBER, WE LAUNCHED OUR
DEPARTMENT'S TEXT FOR HEALTH
TASK FORCE TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE
CAN USE THAT STRATEGY NOT ONLY
TO BOOST ENROLLMENT BUT APPLYING
THE SAME MESSAGING APPROACH TO
OTHER AREAS LIKE CHILDHOOD
HEALTH CHECKUPS AND HELPING
PEOPLE TO STOP SMOKING.
IT'S AN IDEA THAT'S GONE VIRAL
AND WE WANT IT TO CONTINUE TO
SPREAD.
P AS WE CONGRATULATE THIS
ROUND'S WINNERS TODAY, WE CAN
SEE THE POWER OF COLLABORATION
AND THE HUGE POTENTIAL OF
SHARING IDEAS.
SIX INNOVATIONS WERE SUBMITTED
TO ME AS FINALISTS AND THEY WERE
ALL OUTSTANDING AND I WANT TO
START BY CONGRATULATING EACH AND
EVERY ONE OF YOU BECAUSE ONE OF
THE TOUGHEST CHOICES I HAVE TO
MAKE IS TRYING TO SELECT THREE
FROM THE GROUP OF SIX.
EVERYONE HAD GREAT IDEAS, FRESH
THINKING, AND TOUGH CHALLENGES
TO TACKLE, BUT I KNOW YOU SIX
ARE JUST A FEW OF THE COUNTLESS
ENTREPRENEURS WHO CONTINUE TO
COME UP WITH COUNTLESS WAY TO
SAVE MONEY, CONTINUE SERVICES
AND EMPOWER CONSUMERS ACROSS THE
COUNTRY.
I KNOW IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY TO
CONVINCE OTHERS TO CONSIDER A
NEW IDEA OR TO PARTICIPATE IN A
NEW WAY OF DOING BUSINESS,
ESPECIALLY IN A LARGE
ORGANIZATION, AND I'M SURE MANY
OF YOU HEARD OVER AND OVER
AGAIN, WE'VE ALWAYS DONE IT THIS
WAY.
ONE OF MY LEAST FAVORITE PHRASES
IN LIFE, BUT IT TAKES COURAGE
AND IT TAKES SOME DETERMINATION,
AND IT TAKES PATIENCE AND I'M
SURE DEAN KNOWS A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT THOSE CHARACTERISTIC WITH
ELEVEN START-UP COMPANIES.
AS YOU HAVE SHOWN, THE BENEFITS
ARE ENORMOUS.
SO AGAIN, LET ME SAY THANK YOU.
TODAY, I WANT TO CHALLENGE EACH
AND EVERYONE OF YOU IN THIS
DEPARTMENT TO CONTINUE CARE
CARRYING OUT THE INNOVATIONS.
KEEP REFINING THEM, IMPROVING
THEM AND HELP ME EXPLORE WAYS
THAT WE CAN SCALE THEM AND
REPLICATE THEM NOT ONLY
THROUGHOUT THE DEPARTMENT BUT
THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, AND
FRANKLY, I CAN'T WAIT THE TO SEE
WHAT YOU COME UP WITH NEXT YEAR.
I'D NOW LIKE TO BRING MY GREET
PARTNER UP TO THE PODIUM, DEPUTY
SEC THE TEAR CORE TO INTRODUCE
OUR GUEST SPEAKER.
BILL CORE.
[APPLAUSE]
>> THANK YOU SECRETARY.
YOU KNOW, I'VE HAD MANY
OCCASIONS TO FOLLOW THE
SECRETARY OR ON SOME OCCASIONS
TO INTRODUCE HER, AND WHENEVER I
DO, I'M ALWAYS REMINDED OF A
STORY SHE TOLD ME WHEN SHE FIRST
WAS CONFIRMED THAT SHE MET
SOMEONE AND THEY SAID, HELLO
MADAM SECRETARY.
SHE SAID TO ME, I DIDN'T KNOW
WHO SHE WAS TALKING TO BECAUSE
I'M NOT A MADAM AND I'M NOT A
SECRETARY.
A
[LAUGHTER]
I PREFER TO HER AS SECRETARY NOT
MADAM.
ALTHOUGH IF YOU'VE BEEN IN
WASHINGTON FOR A WHILE, MADAM
ROLLS OFF YOUR TONGUE.
IT IS MY PRIVILEGED TODAY TO BE
PART O OF A DEPARTMENT WHERE
INNOVATION ABOUT CREATIVITY ARE
VALUED AND ENCOURAGED BY OUR
LEADERSHIP, OUR SENIOR
LEADERSHIP STARTING WITH THE
SECRETARY BUT ALL THE OTHERS
WHO'VE ORGANIZED AN PARTICIPATED
ON THE COUNCIL, BUT MOST
IMPORTANTLY, A DEPARTMENT FULL
OF COLLEAGUES WHO UNDERSTAND THE
VALUE OF INNOVATION, ARE
ENCOURAGED TO DO IT AND COME
FORWARD WITH THE IDEAS LIKE YOU
HAVE TODAY.
-- OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS.
IT IS TRULY AN HONOR TO BE A
PART OF A GARMENT WHERE PEOPLE
BECAUSE THEY'RE SO COMMITTED TO
OUR MISSION WANT TO FIND NEW
WAYS TO IMPROVE WHAT WE DO, TO
HAVE GREATER IMPACT.
SO CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH AND
EVERYONE OF YOU AND KEEP ON
GOING.
ALL RIGHT.
IT'S MY PLEASURE TODAY TO
INTRODUCE OUR GUEST SPEAKER.
DEAN HOVIEA SILICONE VALLEY
INNOVATOR, DESIGNER AND
ENTREPRENEUR.
DEAN HAS FOUNDED ELEVEN
COMPANIES AND DEVELOPED NUMEROUS
INNOVATIONS IN HEALTH CARE AND
BEYOND THAT HAVE TOUCHED MANY OF
US IN THIS ROOM TODAY.
WHEN DEAN WAS RIGHT OUT OF
GRADUATE SCHOOL, HE WAS
CHALLENGED BE BY STEVE JOBS OF
APPLE TO DEVELOP A COMPUTER
MOUSE -- LISTEN TO THIS -- THAT
WOULD BE EASIER TO USE THAN THE
STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY,
MORE RELIABLE, AND 90% CHEAPER.
NINE, ZERO.
I'M THINKING TO MYSELF, THAT IS
QUITE A CHALLENGE.
THE 90% POORT IS PROBABLY THE
BIGGEST DIFFICULTY.
IT REMINDS ME OF SOME OF THE
ENORMOUS CHALLENGES THAT WE
HAVE.
JUST A VERY SOON YOU'LL HEAR THE
SECRETARY TALKING ABOUT OUR NEED
TO DRAMATICALLY REDUCE HOSPITAL
RE-ADD MISSIONS, ABOUT OUR NEED
THE TO BASICALLY ELIMINATE
HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED INFECTIONS.
THESE ARE CHALLENGES THAT ARE
GOING TO PUT US ALL TO THE TEST
TO WORK WITH OUR PROVIDERS
ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO ACCOMPLISH
THOSE KINDS OF INNOVATIONS AND
THAT'S WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE
IN OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.
THOSE KINDS OF INNOVATIONS, SO
WE NEED YOUR BEST INNOVATIVE
SPIRITS WORKING ON THESE ISSUES.
DEAN MET THE CHALLENGE THAT
STEVE JOBS GAVE HIM BY
HARNESSING THE TALENTS OF HIS
TEAM, TAKING INSPIRATION FROM
UNLIKELY SOURCES, BUILDING ON
NEW IDEAS, AND DEFYING
EXPECTATIONS.
TODAY, HE HOLDS THE PATENT FOR
THE APPLE MOUSE AND MANY OTHERS.
CURRENTLY, DEAN'S
ENTREPRENEURIAL PURSUITS HAVE
FOCUSSED ON HEALTH AND
WELLBEING.
HE WRIGHT WRITHINGS AND LECTURES
ON INSPIRATION AND CONTINUES TO
EXPLORE HOW INNOVATION CAN BE
ENCOURAGED IN ORGANIZATIONS.
I ASKED HIM WHEN WE WERE SITTING
HERE JUST A MOMENT AGO, AT SOME
POINT I WANT TO TELL HIM HOW
INNOVATION DIFFERS IN THE
PRIVATE SECTOR AND IN GOVERNMENT
BECAUSE WE NEED TO LEARN
EVERYTHING WE CAN FROM HIS
EXPERIENCES.
SO ON BEHALF OF OUR
ORGANIZATION, WE'RE DELIGHTED TO
HAVE DEAN HOVIE JOIN US TODAY
AND TO SHARE HIS THOUGHTS ON
INNOVATION.
DEAN.
[APPLAUSE]
>> MADAM SECRETARY.
[LAUGHTER]
IT'S GREAT TO BE HERE.
WHAT A GREAT CROWD AND HI THERE
IN THE TELEVISION.
[LAUGHTER]
YOU KNOW, I'M IN A DISTINGUISHED
POSITION TO BE ABLE TO LOOK YOU
IN THE EYE AND SAY, DON'T TOUCH
THAT MOUSE.
[LAUGHTER]
I'M ALSO INSPIRED BY TODD, I
THINK HE WAS IN INSPIRATION FOR
THE ENERGIZER BUNNY, DON'T YOU
THINK?
[APPLAUSE]
COUPLE YEARS AGO, I MET BRAD
PERKINS WHO WAS THE CHIEF
INNOVATION OFFICER AND STRATEGY
OFFICE FOR THE CDC AT THE TIME,
HE WAS ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS
OF PUTTING TOGETHER INNOVATION
TEAM, AND I'M DELIGHTED TO SEE
AT LEAST ONE PERSON OF THAT TEAM
IS HERE TODAY.
SO GOOD COMPANY.
BUT WE HAD A CHANCE TO TALK
ABOUT THE FORMATION OF THE CDC,
ABOUT HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THE
ORIGINS WAS THAT THE ARMY WANTED
TO HAVE A TRAINING CAMP IN
GEORGIA AND THEY WERE HAVING A
PROBLEM WITH THIS THING CALLED
MALARIA.
THE CDC WAS FORMED TO STOMP OUT
MALARIA, WHICH THEY DID A GREAT
JOB AND THEY WERE ABLE TO SET UP
CAMP AND HELP US WIN A WAR, I
SUPPOSE.
BUT WHAT WAS IMPORTANT ABOUT
THAT IS THAT THERE WAS A REALLY
BIG GOAL THAT THEY WERE IS I
SIGNED TO DO AND WENT AFTER IT
AND SUCCEEDED, WHICH WAS REALLY
GREAT.
TODAY, I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF
TIME BUT I WANT TO THE TELL YOU
THREE STORIES.
I CALL THEM MOUSE TALES,
ALLIGATORS AND TERRORISTS AND
MOONSHINE.
HOPEFULLY THROUGH THOSE STORIES
YOU'LL BE ABLE TO HAVE A HANDLE
WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOU.
MOUSE TAELS, PART OF THE STORIES
HAVE ALREADY BEEN TOLD.
WE HAD STARTED A COMPANY CALLED
HOVIE, KELLY DESIGN WHICH IS NOW
IDEAL AND OUR THIRD CUSTOMER WAS
APPLE COMPUTER.
WE WERE DESIGNING THE COMPUTER
CASES, MAINLY, FOR APPLE, AND I
WAS JUST PASSIONATE ABOUT DOING
MORE THAN JUST DESIGNING PRETTY
BOXES.
SO I HAD SEVERAL IDEAS THAT I
WANTED TO TALK TO STEVE JOBS
ABOUT BECAUSE HE WAS IN THE
COMPUTER BUSINESS.
THAT WOULD BE ACCESSORIES TO
ENHANCE THE EXPERIENCE WITH
COMPUTERS.
WE SCHEDULED AN AFTERNOON
MEETING, IT WAS A FRIDAY
AFTERNOON, EARLY SPRING IN 1980.
WE SAT DOWN AND I STARTED DOING
MY PITCH, YOU KNOW.
ABOUT THREE SECONDS HE SAID,
TIME-OUT, DEAN, YOU KNOW WHAT
GUYS REALLY NEED TO DO IS DESIGN
A MOUSE.
I WENT, A MOUSE?
MOST OF US, KNEW WHAT A MOUSE
WAS.
TURNS OUT THAT XEROX, LOTS OF
INNOVATION THERE IN THE SENSE OF
INVENTING THINGS, HAD CREATE AT
STAR SYSTEM THAT HAD A DEVICE
THAT YOU MOVED ON A TABLE AND IT
WOULD MOVE THE CURSER ON THE
SCREEN.
STEVE SAID TO ME, THOOS WHAT YOU
NEED TO BUILD, AND IT'S GOING
REDEFINE THE WAY WE INTERACT
WITH COMPUTERS.
I SAID, SOUNDS GOOD.
TELL ME MORE.
HE DID SOMETHING WHICH WAS
BRILLIANT AT THE TIME AND JUST
SEEMED SORT OF NATURAL TO ME,
BUT HE SAID, DEAN, HERE'S THE
THE REQUIREMENTS.
WE NEED IT TO BE RELIABLE, NEEDS
TO LAST AT LEAST TWO YEARS.
SECONDLY, WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO
BUILD IT FOR $15.
THAT'S NOT VERY MUCH.
THIRDLY, I WANT IT TO BE ABLE TO
WORK ON ANY SORT OF DESKTOP, AND
FOURTH, I WANT IT TO WORK ON MY
LEVIS.
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE LOOKED AT THE
iPAD COMMERCIALS, YOU'LL SEE,
BASICALLY, LEGS, LEVIS AND AN
iPAD.
I BELIEVE THAT STEVE HAD THIS
REALLY INTERESTING VIEW ON WHAT
THE RELATIONSHIP WE MIGHT HAVE
WITH COMPUTERS EVEN BACK THEN,
AND THE MOUSE WAS THE FIRST PART
BECAUSE THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT
YOU CAN ACTUALLY INTERACT WITH
IN MEANINGFUL WAY.
SO I WENT OUT THE DOOR AND I
SAID, HMM, WHERE DO I GO FIND
MICE PARTS?
WHAT I DID IS I WENT DOWN TO THE
LOCAL WALL GREENS AND I WENT
STRAIGHT TO THE UNDERARM DEQUOTE
RANT WHERE THEY HAD ROLLING
BALLS.
SECONDLY, I WENT OVER TO THE
DISHWEARS AND BOUGHT A BUTTER
PLAIT AND DISH.
I RAN OFF TO THE PLASTIC STORE
AND GOT SOME PLASTIC RESIN, SOME
DEAF LONG AND OVER THE WEEKEND,
I HACKED TOGETHER THE FIRST
PROTOTYPE OF THE HOUSE.
SO, 250 BUCKS, FIRST PROTOTYPE.
YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO
MIKE SOME PROGRESS.
PROTOTYPES ARE REALLY IMPORTANT
TO GET YOUR BRINE AROUND A
PROJECT.
BRAIN AROUND A PROJECT.
I CAME BACK THE FOLLOWING
MONDAY, CONVINCED MY PARTNER
THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING HE
NEEDED TO DO AND THAT WE COULD
DO.
WENT FWOOK STEVE AND SAID, WE'RE
IN.
HE SAID, GREAT.
SO IN NINE MONT'S TIME, WE
ACTUALLY HAD WORKING MICE TOO
THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM SO THEY
COULD MOVE FORWARD WITH THEIR
DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IF YOU'RE
GOING DESIGN A SYSTEM THAT'S
INTERACTING WITH SOMETHING YOU
GOT HAVE THE SOMETHING FIRST OR
YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT
YOU'RE DOING.
IN NINE MONT'S TIME WE HAD
WORKING MICE.
ABOUT 18 MONTHS LATER THE MAC
CAME OUT.
IT WAS A GREAT PROJECT FOR OUR
COMPANY.
WE WENT FROM DESIGNING PRETTY
THINGS TO THINGS THAT REALLY
WORK THAT THE HAD ELECTRONICS
AND SOFT WE'RE AND ALL KINDS OF
GOOD STUFF AND IT PUT THE
COMPANY ON THE MAP.
IT WAS A GREAT PROJECT.
ALLIGATORS AND TERRORISTS.
20 YEARS AGO I WAS IN WASHINGTON
D.C. INTERVIEWING A THREE-STAR
ADMIRAL.
WE HAD STARTED A COMPANY IN
MICHIGAN WITH A PROFESSOR OF
PROPULSION AND THE EQUIVALENT OF
AN ISRAELI U.S. SEAL.
HE WAS A Ph.D. IN THE PROGRAM.
THEY WERE CREATING A STELth
BOAT.
IT WAS A BOAT THAT WOULD SNORKEL
AT 10 KNOTS UNDER WATER, AND
WHEN YOU STEPPED ON THE GAS, IT
WOULD COME UP OUT OF THE WATER
AND GO 450 KNOTS ON THE OPEN
OCEAN.
THAT'S A REALLY FAST.
IT HAD RADAR REFLECTING SURFACES
SO THAT YOU COULDN'T SEE IT.
IT WAS BASICALLY STEALTH.
SO I ASKED THE ADMIRAL, WHY IS
IT THAT I SHOULD BE INTERESTED
IN THIS PROJECT.
HE SAID WE'VE LOOKED FORWARD
ABOUT WHAT WAR'S GOING TO BE
LIKE.
HE SAID WAR'S NOT GOING TO BE
THE CONVENTIONAL STUFF WE'RE
DOING.
IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE ABOUT
FIGHTING TERRORISM.
I WENT FIGHTING TERRORISM?
THIS WAS BACK IN 1989.
I THOUGHT, THAT'S INTERESTING.
SO WE CONTINUED THE
CONVERSATION.
HE SAID, DEAN, DO YOU THINK WE
COULD DROP ONE OF THESE THINGS
OUT OF THE BACK OF A C 140 CARGO
MARINE WITH A SAIL.
I SAID, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO
THAT?
HE SAID, WELL WE HAVE INVESTED
FOR YEARS INTO AN INFRASTRUCTURE
THAT CAN DEPLOY THROUGHOUT THE
WORLD, BUT WAR'S CHANGED.
WE HAVE TO USE OUR
INFRASTRUCTURE AND INNOVATE ON
TOP OF IT.
WE'VE GOT THESE CARGO PLANES
THAT ARE MEANT TO DEPLOY STUFF.
IF WE COULD DROP THIS BOAT OUT
NEAR WHERE WE NEEDED TO GET TO,
IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC.
I THOUGHT, THAT MAKES SENSE.
BOAT HULLS GO THROUGH WOOTER,
WHICH IS JUST REALLY THICK AIR
IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT.
AND SO IF WE PUT A SAIL ON IT,
THEY COULD PROBABLY DROP OUT OF
THE BACK OF THE PLANE AND THEN
THEY'D HIT THE WATER PRETTY
HARD.
I SAID, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT'S
INTERESTING?
WHEN YOU'RE GOING 45 KNOTS ON
THE OPEN OCEAN, WHEN YOU HIT A
WAVE, IT'S JUST LIKE HITTING A
BRICK WALL.
SO IN OTHER WORDS FOR THE SALES
TO SURVIVE, EVEN MORE THAN 90
SECONDS, THEY HAD THESE E WILL
BE RATE HYDRAULIC SEATS TO TAKE
THE IMPACT.
I SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT, PERFECT.
WE CAN HAVE THESE GUYS LOAD IT
UP IN THE BOAT, DROPPED OUT THE
BACK AND INTO THE WATER.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
WHAT WAS IMPORTANT IS HE UNTD
THE GAME CHANGED AND IT CHANGED
RAPIDLY.
HE SAID, WE HAVE GREAT
INFRASTRUCTURE, NOW WE NEED TO
INSHOW eKNOW VARIETY ON TOP OF
IT.
HE WAS THINKING ABOUT IT.
DROPPING BOATS WITH PEOPLE IN IT
OUT THE BACK OF A PLANE.
PRETTY AMAZING.
THAT'S NUMBER TWO.
P IN, I GUESS IT WAS JULY 20TH,
1969, I WAS OVER AT ONE OF MY
BUDDY'S HOUSE PLAYING FOOTBALL.
WE WERE PART OF A FOOTBALL TEAM,
PLAYING CATCH, AND HIS MOM
CALLED US IN, SAT US AROUND THE
TELEVISION AND THERE WE SAW
LANDING ON THE MOON.
NEIL ARMSTRONG STEPPING OFF ON
TO THE MOON'S SURFACE AND THERE
WAS SOMEBODY ON THE MOON.
I DON'T KNOW WHO CHOREOGRAPHED
THIS, BUT AS I RECALL, IT WAS
AROUND 4:00 IN THE AFTERNOON,
BEAUTIFUL SUNNY DAY, ABOUT IT
JUST SO HAPPENED THAT THE MOON
WAS FULL AND YOU COULD SEE IT.
WE WENT OUTSIDE AND LOOKED UP
AND SAW UH THE MOON.
I WENT, WOW, THAT'S AMAZING.
THERE'S AN AMERICAN UP THERE.
WHAT A GREET COUNTRY.
WHAT A GREAT COUNTRY.
THIS IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST
COUNTRY THAT WE CAN DO THAT.
NOW, THE JOB HADN'T BEEN DONE,
IT WAS ONLY HALFWAY THERE.
WE HAD PUT THEM ON THE MOON.
YOU REVERSE BACK EIGHT YEARS AND
A COUPLE OF MONTHS, MAY 25th,
1961.
PRESIDENT KENNEDY STOOD BEFORE A
SPECIAL JOINT CONGRESS AND
CHALLENGED THE NATION AND SAID,
I BELIEVE THAT THE NATION SHOULD
TAKE UP THIS CAUSE TO ACCOMPLISH
THIS GOAL OF WITHIN THE END OF
THIS DECADE, LANDING A MAN ON
THE MOON AND RETURNING HIM HOME
TO EARTH SAFELY.
THAT WAS JUST EIGHT YEARS TO DO
THAT.
NOW WHY DID HE DO IT?
SPUTNIK WAS OUT THERE.
IT LOOKED LIKE PEOPLE, THE
CHIEF, THE RUSSIANS WERE GETTING
AHEAD OF US, UM, AND WE NEEDED
TO HAVE BELIEF IN OURSELVES.
I TELL YOU, ON THAT DAY THAT I
SAW HIM ON THE MOON, IT WAS
GREAT.
SO WHAT WAS SIGNIFICANT ABOUT
THAT WAS IT WAS A REALLY CLEAR
GOAL, BIG GOAL.
SAID, WE'RE GOING TO PUT A MAN
ON THE MOON AND BRING HIM HOME
SIEFLY.
SAFELY.
WHEN STEVE JOBS GAVE ME A GOAL,
IT WAS CLEAR.
IT SAID, UM, RELIABLE,
INEXPENSIVE, YOU KNOW, WORK ON
THESE SURFACES.
WHAT WAS REALLY GREAT ABOUT
THAT -- AND I'M GOING LEAVE YOU
WITH THIS HANDLE WHICH IS CALLED
BURN, WHICH IS ONE.
THERE'S A BIG IDEA OUT THERE
THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, AND BIG
IDEAS INSPIRE PEOPLE TO DO GREAT
THINGS.
SECONDLY, YOU, FOR URGENCY, IS
BIG PROJECTS TAKE TIME.
YOU GOT DECOMPOSE THEM JUST LIKE
DUANE SAID AND YOU'VE GOT FIND
THOSE ONES AND SEQUENCE THEM.
WE COUNT GET TO THE MOON WITHOUT
DOING A WHOLE BUNCH OF THINGS IN
SEQUENCE.
WE COUNT GET AN APPLE COMPUTER
WITHOUT HAVING A MOUSE.
YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE SOME URGENCY
AROUND THE STEPS.
THIRDLY, IT HAS TO BE
RESTRICTIONS.
STEVE GAVE ME GREAT RESTRICTIONS
ON WHAT THE MOUSE WAS GOING BE
LIKE.
CONSTRAINTS, RESTRICTIONS ARE
LIMITATIONS THAT ARE MEASURABLE.
YOU KNOW SUCCESS MEANS OR
FAILURE.
THEN FINALLY, N, IS FOR
NECESSITY.
IF WE DIDN'T DESIGN THE MOUSE,
THAT COMPUTER WOULDN'T GO.
IF WE DIDN'T GET THE MAN ON THE
MOON AND RETURN HIM SAFELY, IT
WOULD FILE.
SO YOU PUT THOSE TOGETHER AND
SAY BURN.
BURN IS THE FUEL THAT YOU HEAR
-- HERE IN THIS ROOM KNOW
ABOUT.
THERE WAS A FASHION PAST IN THE
OF YOU THAT SAID, WE NEED TO DO
THIS.
AND THAT'S WHY YOU'RE HERE.
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEXT
PROJECT, THINK ABOUT HOW YOU DO
IT.
ONE LAST CLOSING POINT.
THIS IS A BALL THAT WAS IN THE
FIRST MICE AT APPLE.
IT'S A ONE INCH STEEL BALL.
AS I WAS THINKING ABOUT GOALS, I
DID SOME QUICK BACK-OF-THE
NAPKIN CALCULATION WHICH IS SAY
THAT THIS IS AN INCH.
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL REPORTED
AND CDC FIGURED OUT THAT AN
OVERWEIGHT PERSON, OBESE PERSON,
COSTS 1,400 $29 A YEAR MORE IN
HEALTH CARE EXPENSES THAN A
NORMAL PERSON.
YOU DO THE MATH AT 72 MILLION
AND THAT ONE INCH IS WORTH
$25 BILLION.
TWO OF THESE PUT TOGETHER IN
TODAY'S DLOORS IS WHAT IT TOOK
TO PUT A MAN ON THE MOON AND
BRING HIM BACK.
I'M LUCKY IN THAT A WEEK AGO I
BECAME A GRAND DAD.
HER NAME IS SARAVINA.
SHE'S BEAUTIFUL, AND BY THE WAY,
REALLY SMART.
[LAUGHTER]
BUT I ASKED MYSELF, YOU NEED TO
MOVE INTO THE FUTURE.
WHAT'S GOING TO BE LIKE IN 2020
WHEN SHE'S EIGHT YEARS OLD?
WHAT'S IT GOING TO BE LIKE?
THE iPAD'S BEEN ONLY A YEAR OUT.
SMART PHONES ARE NOW SEVERAL
YEARS OLD.
THIS IS EIGHT YEARS FROM NOW, WE
WENT TO THE MOON.
I SAW AN IMAGE OF HERE RUNNING
AND PLAYING ON A SCHOOLYARD WITH
OTHER KIDS AND THERE WASN'T
NIKTD STANDING AROUND ON THE
EDGES.
THEY WERE ALL HAVING FUN.
I'M SURE OTHER PEOPLE CAN SEE
SOME TANGIBLE THINGS LIKE MAN ON
THE MOON AND BACK THAT WE CAN
FOCUS ON AND SAY HOW CAN WE MAKE
THAT FUTURE SUCCESSFUL?
IT'S YOU WHO ARE GOING TO HELP.
WE DO NEED TO TIGHTEN OUR BELTS
BOTH FISCALLY AND PHYSICALLY.
ONE NOTCH OF THE BELT IS ONE
INCH.
WE GO FIVE, WE SAVE $125 BILLION
A YEAR.
GO GET 'EM.
MRUZ MRAUZ
[APPLAUSE]
>> DEAN, THANK YOU VERY, VERY
MUCH.
WE'RE DELIGHTED TO HAVE YOU HERE
WITH US TODAY, BUT UH JUST FOR
THE RECORD, MY GRANDDAUGHTER'S
SMARTER THAN YOURS.
[LAUGHTER]
>> [LOW AUDIO].
[LAUGHTER]
>> THIS IS THE PRICE WARNER
HOUSE COOPER'S BOOK.
IF ANYBODY ELSE'S FINGERPRINTS
TOUCH IT IT DISSOLVES BUT I'VE
GOT IT.
IT'S MY PLEASURE TO HONOR EACH
OF THESE WINNERS TODAY.
I WANT TO REEMPHASIZE WHAT TODD
SAID.
EVERYONE HERE'S A WINNER.
THIS ISN'T WINNERS AND LOSERS.
WE HAVE HONORABLE WINNERS AND
ALL OF THE AWARDEES.
I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME
DIRECTIONS THAT WILL NOT
CHALLENGE YOUR INNOVATIVE
CAPACITIES.
I'M GOING TO CALL UH THE NAME OF
A PROJECT.
I'M GOING ASK ALL OF YOU
INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCT AND YOUR
DIVISION LEADER TO COME UP HERE
ON MY LEFT, YOUR RIGHT.
I'M THEN GOING READ A SHORT
PIECE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT,
INCLUDING YOUR NAMES, AND THEN
I'M GIEK TO ASK YOU TO WALK
ACROSS IN FRONT OF ME,
SECRETARY, DEPUTY SECRETARY,
DEAN, AND TODD WILL CONGRATULATE
YOU AND TODD HAS A MEMENTO FOR
YOU TO TAKE BACK WITH YOU, AND
THEN I'LL CALL A SECOND AND A
THIRD AND A FOURTH AND WE'LL GO
THROUGH SIX AND SEE IF I CAN DO
THIS IN MY ALLOTTED TIME.
THE FIRST OF THE RUNNERS UP IS
FROM OUTER SPACE TO THE EYE
CLINIC, NASA/NIH TEAM DEVELOPED
A NEW UH DEVICE TO DETECT
BLINDING CATARACTS EARLY AND MAY
SERVE ALARMS FOR OTHER DISEASES.
PLEASE COME UP.
[APPLAUSE]
RIGHT HERE.
ALL RIGHT.
NOW LET ME JUST GIVE FOR THOSE
MROORLY -- SOME OF YOU IN THE
ROOM HAVE HEARD ALL THIS BUT WE
WANT TO FOLKS WHO ARE WATCHING
THIS TO HEAR THIS.
FOR THIS INNOVATION TWO
GOVERNMENT SCIENTISTS ONE FROM
NASA AND THE OTHER FROM THE
NATIONAL EYE INSTITUTE AT THE
NIH COLLABORATED TO ADOPT A
PIECE OF A DEVICE BUILT FOR USE
IN OUTER SPACE TO STUDY PROTEIN
CHRISLIZATION INTO A CLINICAL
DWOIGS DWOOIS THAT CAN BE USED
FOR THE EARLY DETECTION FOR
CATARACTS.
THIS WORK IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF
TWO TOP GOVERNMENT AGENCIES
SHARING INFORMATION AND
RESOURCES IN THE SERVICE OF THE
AMERICAN PEOPLE.
THE KEY CONTRIBUTORS MANUEL,
FREDRICK, JAY, AND THE LEADER OF
THE DIVISION, LARRY TABAC.
