DITULLIO: HELLO AND WELCOME TO
RIT SPORTSZONE. I'M JOHN
DITULLIO. HILL: AND I'M SHELBY
HILL. THE FINAL WEEKEND OF THE
REGULAR SEASON PROVED TO BE THE
BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT OF
THE YEAR FOR THE ATLANTIC HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION. DITULLIO: WITH ONLY
FIVE POINTS SEPARATING THE TOP
SEVEN TEAMS, RIT NEEDED TO
FINISH IN THE TOP FOUR TO EARN A
FIRST ROUND BYE IN THE AHA
PLAYOFFS. THE TIGERS LOST AT
NIAGARA FOUR TO ONE, SO THEY
NEEDED TO BEAT OR TIE THE PURPLE
EAGLES ON SENIOR NIGHT AT RITTER
ARENA TO AVOID PLAYING IN THE
FIRST ROUND. FIRST PERIOD
ACTION, NIAGARA ON THE POWER
PLAY, (INAUDIBLE) SCORES AND
GIVES THE PURPLE EAGLES THE LEAD
JUST OVER FIVE MINUTES INTO THE
GAME. RIT WOULD ANSWER. JUST 50
SECONDS INTO THE SECOND PERIOD
JEFF SMITH SCORES HIS SIXTH GOAL
OF THE YEAR TO KNOT THE GAME AT
ONE. LATER IN THE PERIOD,
NIAGARA SHORTHANDED BUT JEFF
HANNON WITH THE OPPORTUNITY, HE
SCORES, TWO ONE NIAGARA AFTER
TWO. BATTAGLIA: OH! SHORTHANDED!
JEFF HANNON! WHAT A GOAL FOR
NIAGARA. DITULLIO: IN THE THIRD,
NIAGARA WITH A GOLDEN
OPPORTUNITY TO PUT IT AWAY BUT
SHANE MADOLORA MAKES THE
SPECTACULAR SLIDING SAVE. LATER
IN THE PERIOD, ANOTHER SENIOR
CAME UP BIG FOR THE TIGERS AS
CHRIS HALTIGIN GETS THE
EQUALIZER. THE TIGERS AND PURPLE
EAGLES SKATE TO A TWO ALL TIE AS
RIT CLINCHES A FIRST ROUND BYE.
WITH MORE ON THE REGULAR SEASON
FINALE, HERE'S MELISSA BROMLEY.
BROMLEY: IN A TWO TWO TIE
AGAINST THE NIAGARA PURPLE
EAGLES, THE TIGERS FINISH THEIR
REGULAR SEASON IN THIRD PLACE
AND EARN THEMSELVES A BYE INTO
THE QUARTER FINALS INTO THE
ATLANTIC HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
PLAYOFFS. BATTAGLIA: HERE'S
CAMERON BURT. 25 REMAINING IN
THE POWER PLAY. BURT HALTIGIN,
BLASTED A GOAL AND THE TIGERS
(INAUDIBLE)! BROMLEY: WHAT WAS
IT LIKE SCORING THE GAME TYING
GOAL ON SENIOR NIGHT IN SUCH AN
IMPORTANT GAME FOR THE
STANDINGS? HALTIGIN: I MEAN IT
WAS OBVIOUSLY SPECIAL, BUT IT
COULD HAVE COME FROM ANYBODY. I
WAS JUST GLAD I WAS ABLE TO GET
ONE ON THE BOARD FOR US. IT WAS
A PRETTY BIG GOAL. IT WAS A
TESTAMENT TO THE REST OF THE
TEAM AND ALL OUR HARD WORK. IT
WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE
SOMETHING WAS GOING TO GO IN AND
LUCKY ENOUGH IT WAS ME. BROMLEY:
WITH YOUR ASSIST TONIGHT, YOU
TIED THE ALL TIME CAREER POINTS
AT RIT; CAN YOU TELL US A BIT
ABOUT HOW THAT FEELS? SMITH: I
MEAN, IT FEELS GREAT, YOU KNOW,
I WAS REALLY FOCUSED ON GETTING
THE WIN, BUT YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN
WORKING HARD MY WHOLE CAREER
HERE AND IT'S GOOD TO LEAVE MY
FOOTPRINTS ON THE ORGANIZATION.
SO IT WAS GOOD FOR ME. I WISH WE
COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE WIN, BUT
I'LL TAKE IT AND MOVE FORWARD
HERE AND TRY TO BREAK THE RECORD
NEXT GAME. BROMLEY: WERE YOU
HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME OF THE
GAME TONIGHT, TRAILING FOR SO
MUCH OF THE GAME AND THEN TYING
IT LATE UP IN THE GAME? WILSON:
WELL IT'S FUNNY, I WAS REALLY
HAPPY WITH OUR PLAY, MAYBE NOT
THE OUTCOME BECAUSE IT'S A TWO
ALL TIE, AND I FELT WE DESERVED
BETTER TONIGHT THAN THAT, BUT
VERY HAPPY WITH OUR PLAY. I
THOUGHT OUR POWER PLAY PENALTY
KILLING, THE GOALTENDING, REAL
KEY SAVES AT THE END, SO THERE'S
A LOT OF THINGS TO BE HAPPY
ABOUT AND I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE
TEAM GOING INTO THE PLAYOFFS,
BUT THE RESULT NOT SO MUCH, BUT
THE PLAY VERY MUCH SO. BROMLEY:
HOW'S THE TEAM GOING TO PREPARE
FOR THE PLAYOFFS NOW THAT YOU DO
HAVE THE WEEKEND OFF? NEW
SPEAKER: REST IS GOING TO BE
NICE! I'M GOING TO NEED IT. I'M
A LITTLE SORE; SOME GUYS ARE
PRETTY BANGED UP, BUT I MEAN,
THE WEEK OFF WILL BE HUGE. JUST
TAKING A COUPLE OF DAYS OFF
SKATES, GETTING YOUR MIND SET,
WE HAVE EXAMS COMING UP SO THAT
WILL BE GOOD HAVING A WEEK OF
WITH EXAMS, BUT JUST TO GET
HEALTHY AND HAVE THAT EXTRA WEEK
OF REST IS PRETTY IMPORTANT AT
THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. NEW
SPEAKER: EVERY GAME COULD BE OUR
LAST GAME, SO WE'VE GOT TO GO IN
WITH NOTHING TO LOSE AND YOU
KNOW, LEAVE EVERYTHING ON THE
ICE. FOR OUR SENIORS, IT COULD
BE THE LAST TIME THEY PUT ON AN
RIT JERSEY SO WE WANT TO GIVE IT
EVERYTHING WE'VE GOT. WILSON: IT
FEELS LIKE WE'VE BEEN IN
PLAYOFFS OUR LAST TEN GAMES TO
BE HONEST WITH YOU. I THINK WE
KNOW WHAT WE HAVE TO DO NOW AND
THIS IS GOING TO BE A GOOD BREAK
FOR US. I THINK THIS WOULD HAVE
BEEN A VERY DIFFICULT WEEKEND TO
PLAY WITH A LOT OF DISTRACTIONS.
THE WOMEN ARE ALSO PLAYING, BUT
IT'S EXAM WEEK AND THEN HAVING
TO REFOCUS ON A NEW OPPONENT AND
GET READY FOR THE PLAYOFFS ON A
MONDAY WHILE THEY HAVE EXAMS,
JUST TRY TO GET THEM THERE FOR
PRACTICE WAS GOING TO BE
DIFFICULT, SO THIS IS A WELL
EARNED WEEKEND OFF FOR THE GUYS
AND SOMETHING THAT WE NEEDED.
BROMLEY: BEING A SENIOR, WHAT
WAS ONE OF YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES
HERE AT RIT? NEW SPEAKER: YOU
KNOW, ACTUALLY IT WAS PROBABLY
WHEN WE GOT BACK FROM THE NCAA
REGIONAL AND WE HAD EVERYBODY IN
THE CIRCLE THERE AND THEY CAME
AND WELCOMED US BACK AT TWO IN
THE MORNING. I'VE NEVER BEEN A
PART OF ANYTHING LIKE THAT, SO
JUST SEEING THE SUPPORT WE GOT
FROM THE STUDENTS AND THE
COMMUNITY THAT LATE AT NIGHT WAS
UNBELIEVABLE. NEW SPEAKER:
OBVIOUSLY THE FROZEN FOUR WAS
PRETTY HUGE AND GOING THREE FOR
FOUR FOR ATLANTIC HOCKEY
CHAMPIONSHIP WAS PRETTY SPECIAL,
I MEAN JUST BEING A PART OF THE
RIT HOCKEY TRADITION IS
SOMETHING IN ITSELF AND COMING
AND PLAYING IN FRONT OF 2,300
PEOPLE EVERY SINGLE NIGHT AND
THE CORNER CREW, EVERYONE'S
GOING NUTS AND TONIGHT WAS
PRETTY SPECIAL JUST BECAUSE
YOU'RE BEING HONORED AS A
SENIOR, IT'S PRETTY SPECIAL.
BROMLEY: CAN YOU TELL US A
LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SENIORS WHO
HAD THEIR LAST REGULAR SEASON
GAME TONIGHT AND HOW THEY'VE
IMPACTED THE TEAM? WILSON:
THEY'VE MADE A HUGE IMPACT. OUR
SUCCESS OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS
AND AS ROCKY MENTIONED OVER THE
SOUND SYSTEM, THE FROZEN FOUR,
THEY'VE BEEN A PART OF A LOT OF
WINNING HERE AT RIT. GREAT
CONTRIBUTORS AND WE'VE GOT
OBVIOUSLY SHANE, TWO TREMENDOUS
YEARS AS A STARTER FOR US. CAM,
NOW THE LEADING SCORER. THREE
DOCTORS ARE GOING TO BE IN THE
GROUP, TWO GUYS WORKING ON THEIR
MASTERS AND EVERYONE GOING TO
GRADUATE THIS SPRING I THINK
REALLY TOPS IT OFF FOR ME AS FAR
AS THEY'VE ALL GOT BRIGHT
FUTURES AFTER HOCKEY AND GREAT
REPRESENTATIVES OF RIT. HILL:
AIR FORCE WON THE REGULAR SEASON
CHAMPIONSHIP AND IS THE TOP SEED
IN THE AHA PLAYOFFS. FOLLOWED BY
NIAGARA, RIT AND MERCYHURST.
DITULLIO: WELL STILL AHEAD ON
SPORTSZONE, WE'LL INTRODUCE YOU
TO THE BRAINS BEHIND BIG BURT
AND AFTER A NEARLY PERFECT RUN
LAST SEASON, THE MEN'S LACROSSE
TEAM PREPARES FOR A NEW YEAR IN
A NEW LEAGUE. YOU'RE WATCHING
RIT SPORTSZONE IN HIGH
DEFINITION. NEW SPEAKER: COME ON
TO SPORTSZONE. IF YOU'RE AN RIT
HOCKEY FAN, YOU'VE PROBABLY MET
OR HAD YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH
BIG BURT THIS SEASON, HE'S
BECOME A STAPLE, NOT ONLY AT
GAMES, BUT AROUND TOWN TOO.
BURTHEAD HAS BEEN SEEN DOING
MEDIA APPEARANCES AND EVEN HAS
HIS OWN FACEBOOK PAGE. LIKE MANY
FANS, SPORTSZONE'S KRISTEN KLOCK
WONDERED HOW THIS ALL GOT
STARTED SO SHE TRACKED DOWN THE
BRAINS BEHIND BIG BURT.
BATTAGLIA: AND CENTER OF FIVE
FOOT ELEVEN INCH SENIOR FROM
DETROIT ROC CITY, RIT CAMERON
BURT. KLOCK: SO HOW DID YOU GUYS
COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THE
CAMERON BURT HEAD? NEW SPEAKER:
WELL IT STARTED ONE NIGHT WITH
MARI AND I AT A SYRACUSE
BASKETBALL GAME THAT WE WENT TO
AND DURING THE GAME THEY HAD A
COACH BOEHEIM ENLARGED HEAD THAT
THEY WERE RUNNING AROUND THE
ARENA WITH AND WE JUST LOOKED AT
EACH OTHER ONE DAY AND WE SAID
WE'RE GOING TO MAKE A BIG BURT
OUT OF THAT. NEW SPEAKER: WE'VE
KNOWN CAMERON SINCE HIS FRESHMAN
YEAR. WE MET HIM HERE, ACTUALLY,
WE MET HIM AFTER A GAME AND WE
JUST BECAME FRIENDS WITH HIM AND
I THINK ONE YEAR, I THINK IT WAS
HIS SOPHOMORE OR JUNIOR YEAR WE
TOLD HIM WE WERE GOING TO DO
SOMETHING LIKE THIS. KLOCK: WHAT
DO YOU TELL YOURSELF IN THE
MIRROR BEFORE A GAME? CAN YOU
TALK ABOUT WHEN YOU FIRST SAW
THE BURT HEAD? BURT: I SAW IT
BLUE CROSS WEEKEND, I GOT KIND
OF SCARED! I WAS IN WARM-UPS AND
I TURNED AROUND AND THERE WAS A
BIG CARDBOARD CUTOUT OF ME RIGHT
BEHIND THE GLASS. BUT YOU KNOW,
IT'S PRETTY COOL TO SEE, THE
SUPPORT I GET FROM THE FANS THAT
COME AND I'M JUST THANKFUL THAT
THEY'RE THAT SUPPORTIVE OF ME
AND THE TEAM. BATTAGLIA: NOW
THERE YOU SEE THE CAMERON BURT
FATHEAD THAT'S GOING UP. BURT
DIDN'T SCORE THAT LAST GOAL, BUT
I STILL APPROVE OF THAT GOING
AROUND. DITULLIO: IS HE THE ONLY
PLAYER WITH A FATHEAD? NEW
SPEAKER: AND THE FUNNY PART OF
IT IS AT THAT GAME, CAMERON'S
MOTHER WAS ACROSS THE ARENA AND
SAW THE HEAD AND SHE CAME
INSTANTLY RUNNING OVER AND
THAT'S HOW WE MET HER. SHE GAVE
US A BIG HUG AND A BUNCH OF
LAUGHS. SHE THOUGHT HOW FUNNY IT
WAS TO DO THIS FOR HER SON.
KLOCK: WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN
YOU FIRST SAW IT? NEW SPEAKER: I
THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT! THE FANS
OUT HERE HAVE A REAL GOOD
APPRECIATION OF HIM AND I'M GLAD
AND HONORED THAT THEY HAVE A
GREAT OPINION OF HIM. BATTAGLIA:
YOU SEE THE CAMERON BURT FATHEAD
MAKING ITS WAY BACK. IT DEBUTED
LAST WEEK AT THE BLUE CROSS
ARENA, JOHNNY. DITULLIO: IT'S A
CLASSIC. KLOCK: HOW HAVE FANS
RESPONDED TO IT? NEW SPEAKER:
FANS LOVE IT. WE'RE GETTING TO
THE POINT NOW WE GET RECOGNIZED
WALKING AROUND CAMPUS, SECURITY
PEOPLE AT THE ARENA RECOGNIZE
WHO WE ARE, WE GET ESCORTED IN,
A LITTLE CELEBRITY TYPE OF
STATUS. IT'S BEEN SOMETHING
THAT'S BEEN KIND OF FUN. AT THE
ARENA MULTIPLE STUDENTS WILL
WANT TO GET THEIR PICTURE TAKEN
WITH BIG BURT SO WE'RE ALWAYS
AVAILABLE FOR THAT. KLOCK: SO
YOU HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE FOR HIM
AND LITTLE CARDS THAT YOU HAND
OUT? COULD YOU GUYS TALK ABOUT
HOW YOU GOT THOSE IDEAS AND
PEOPLE'S RESPONSES TO THEM? NEW
SPEAKER: SURE, WE JUST CAME UP
WITH TWO CARDS: ONE OF THEM IS
CAMERON BIG BURT IS IN THE
HOUSE, AND ON THE BACKSIDE IS
THE FACEBOOK WEBSITE AND WE ALSO
HAVE JUST A BLANK CARD THAT'S
GOT THE SPEECH CLOUD IN THERE,
SPEECH BUBBLE, WE HAVE A LOT OF
FUN WRITING. WE WANTED TO COME
UP WITH SOME WAY THAT THE FANS
COULD INTERACT WITH BIG BURT AND
WE THOUGHT WHAT BETTER WAY THAN
A BUSINESS CARD, A FACEBOOK
PAGE, WE TAKE AS MANY PICTURES
AS POSSIBLE, TRY TO UPDATE THE
SITE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BUT
PRETTY MUCH THE CARD WAS JUST A
WAY TO INTERACT WITH THE FANS,
THE CORNER CREW, THE PEP BAND.
KLOCK: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE
SAYING? WHAT'S IT LIKE TO HAVE
THIS BIG POSTER OF YOUR HEAD?
BURT: IT'S GOOD; IT WAS KIND OF
OVERWHELMING AT FIRST, BUT IT
GREW ON ME. YOU KNOW, I'M THE
KIND OF GUY THAT JOKES AROUND
ABOUT LIKING THE SPOTLIGHT, I
THINK EVERYBODY DOES. I MEAN
LIKE I SAID EARLIER, IT'S GOOD
TO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF PEOPLE
THAT COME TO THE GAME. ALL:
(CHEERING) NEW SPEAKER: BURT'S
ONLY OUT WHEN BURT IS ON THE ICE
AND LIKE YOU SAID, WE DO A LAP
WHEN HE SCORES A GOAL OR
SOMETHING LIKE THAT. BATTAGLIA:
RIT GOAL, HIS SIXTH OF THE
SEASON SCORED BY NUMBER 18,
CAMERON BURT! NEW SPEAKER: I
THINK IT'S JUST A TESTAMENT TO
RIT HOCKEY AND HOW WELL WAYNE
WILSON AND THE TEAM HAVE DONE IN
THE PAST FEW YEARS. IT'S REALLY
A RECOGNIZABLE SPORT NOW, AT
LEAST THE TEAM IS A RECOGNIZABLE
TEAM HERE IN TOWN BECAUSE
THEY'VE GONE SO FAR, GOING TO
THE FROZEN FOUR A COUPLE OF
YEARS AGO. SO WE HOPE THEY
CONTINUE THE TRADITION OF GOING
DEEP INTO THE PLAYOFFS. NEW
FORMER RIT LACROSSE STANDOUT
JORDAN MCINTOSH IS HAVING AN
IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE SEASON IN THE
NATIONAL LACROSSE LEAGUE. HE'S
SCORED TEN GOALS AND HAS HAD TEN
ASSISTS WHILE LEADING HIS TEAM
IN LOOSE BALLS AND FACEOFF WINS.
IN FEBRUARY, MCINTOSH MADE HIS
NLL ALL STAR DEBUT AND SCORED
TWO GOALS TO HELP LEAD THE WEST
ALL STARS TO A 20 18 VICTORY.
DITULLIO: WHILE JORDAN MCINTOSH
HAS MOVED ONTO THE PROS, HIS
FORMER TEAM IS PREPARING FOR A
NEW SEASON IN THE NEW LIBERTY
LEAGUE. THE TIGERS HAVE
REGROUPED AND RELOADED AFTER A
19 AND 1 SEASON THAT SAW THEM
REACH THE DIVISION THREE
NATIONAL SEMIFINALS. OUR VERY
OWN SHELBY HILL HAS MORE.
BATTAGLIA: AS THE RIT TIGERS
WILL FINISH OFF A REGULAR SEASON
UNDEFEATED, THE TIGERS ARE THE
REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS OF THE
EMPIRE EIGHT. HILL: SO CAN YOU
JUST TELL ME ABOUT LAST SEASON
AS A WHOLE. NEW SPEAKER: I THINK
LAST SEASON AS A WHOLE WAS A
VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE. GOING 19
AND 1 WAS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE BUT
I THINK THIS YEAR THERE'S BEEN A
LITTLE BIT OF DEFINITELY SOME
UNFINISHED BUSINESS I THINK.
IT'S TOUGH LOSING ONLY ONE GAME
THE WHOLE YEAR AND IT BEING THE
LAST GAME OF THE SEASON, SO I
THINK LAST SEASON WAS DEFINITELY
A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
FOR THE PROGRAM AND FOR ALL THE
GUYS THAT WERE ON THE TEAM. NEW
SPEAKER: A LOT OF SURPRISES
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND YOU
KNOW, TOWARDS THE END I WAS KIND
OF LOOKING BACK AND SAYING WOW,
I CAN'T BELIEVE WE'RE UNDEFEATED
AT THIS POINT, AND HOPEFULLY
THAT'S SET A PRECEDENT MOVING
FORWARD. I KNOW I'VE SAID THAT
BEFORE BUT YOU KNOW, THEY'VE
DONE A GOOD JOB OF LISTENING AND
BEING COACHED AND WORKING HARD,
SO IT WAS A FANTASTIC YEAR.
HILL: YOU HAD A GREAT SEASON,
BUT OVER THE OFF SEASON, WHAT
DID YOU HAVE THE TEAM FOCUS ON?
NEW SPEAKER: GETTING IN SHAPE.
COMING IN IN SHAPE. YOU KNOW, IN
THE OFF SEASON IT'S REALLY ON
THEM AND I ASK THEM TO DEDICATE
THEMSELVES AS MUCH IN THE OFF
SEASON AS THEY DO IN SEASON AND
WE PREACH THAT THE TEAMS AND THE
PLAYERS WHO DO THAT TO THE
FULLEST ARE THE TEAMS THAT ARE
GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. HILL:
NOW YOU LOST A LOT OF GREAT
SENIORS; CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT
THAT AND WHAT THE TEAM'S MISSING
WITHOUT THEM. NEW SPEAKER:
GRADUATING ALL THOSE GUYS, THERE
ARE DEFINITELY SOME BIG SHOES TO
FILL, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF YOUNG
GUYS THAT HAVE COME IN AND SOME
GUYS THAT WERE EVEN ON THE TEAM
BEFORE THAT REALLY HAVEN'T
GOTTEN A CHANCE TO STEP UP AND
PLAY WHO ARE WAITING TO DO THAT.
WE'VE GOT GUYS WHO ARE GOOD, YOU
KNOW, GREAT PLAYERS, BUT THEY
HAVEN'T PLAYED A LOT SO
HOPEFULLY AS THE SEASON GOES ON
AND WE START TO PLAY TOGETHER
MORE AS A TEAM, THEY'LL BE MORE
ABLE TO FIND THEIR ROLES AND
STEP INTO THOSE ROLES AND BE AS
GOOD A SUCCESS AS THOSE GUYS
WERE BEFORE. I THINK WE'RE
REALLY GOING TO MISS BOB'S
LEADERSHIP AT THE GOALIE
POSITION, BOB THOMAS, HE WAS THE
LEADER BACK THERE, I GUESS.
THERE WERE YOUNGER GUYS, I WAS A
YOUNGER GUY BACK THEN AND WE'RE
KIND OF LOSING THAT, ALTHOUGH WE
DO HAVE SOME GOOD GOALIES THIS
YEAR WORKING ON THAT. LOSING
THEM, LOSING BOB, AND THEN
LOSING OUR MIDFIELD PLAY FROM MJ
AND JORDAN IS GOING TO BE BIG
THIS YEAR. NEW SPEAKER: RIGHT
NOW AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON,
MAYBE WE'RE LACKING A LITTLE
EXPERIENCE ON THE FIELD. WE'VE
ONLY BEEN GOING FOR TWO AND A
HALF WEEKS SO HOPEFULLY WE'LL
KEEP GOING HERE WE'LL GAIN THAT
EXPERIENCE. WE'VE KIND OF BEEN
TALKING, OH, WE'VE GOT TO
REPLACE THIS GUY AND THIS GUY
AND TO AN EXTENT I THINK WE'VE
BEEN FORTUNATE TO DO THAT WITH
SOME TRANSFERS AND SOME GUYS
FROM LAST YEAR'S TEAM STEPPING
UP INTO ROLES SO I FEEL LIKE
WE'RE RIGHT THERE, IT'S JUST A
MATTER OF GETTING THAT
EXPERIENCE AND MESHING AND
PLAYING TOGETHER AND BUYING IN.
HILL: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE
FRESHMEN COMING IN THIS YEAR;
WHAT ARE THEY ADDING TO THE
TEAM? NEW SPEAKER: THE FRESHMEN
THIS YEAR, THEY HAVE A LOT OF
TALENT, THERE'S A LOT OF THEM.
IT SEEMS LIKE A BIGGER CLASS
THAN WHEN I WAS A FRESHMAN AND
WHAT REALLY STOOD OUT TO ME WAS
THEIR ATHLETIC ABILITY. WE HAVE
SOME FRESHMEN THAT ARE VERY FAST
AND VERY STRONG AND THEY'RE
PICKING UP THE SCHEMES BOTH
OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY
PRETTY QUICKLY AND I THINK TIME
WILL TELL THAT THEY'RE GOING TO
STEP UP EARLY IN THE SEASON.
HILL: AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS
AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS
SEASON? NEW SPEAKER: WE'RE STILL
GOING TO TRY AND COMPETE IN THE
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. WE'RE
GOING TO TRY AND GET THERE AND
COMPETE. ONE GAME AT A TIME,
REALLY IT'S A CLICHÉ, BUT YOU
KNOW, WE'VE GOT A LONG SEASON
AHEAD OF US AND WITH A DIFFERENT
SORT OF SCHEDULE, A REALLY
COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE, I THINK
WE'LL BE CLOSE TO TOP FIVE IN
THE COUNTRY AS FAR AS STRENGTH
OF SCHEDULE SO THAT PHRASE
REALLY COMES INTO PLAY THIS
YEAR. NEW SPEAKER: I PERSONALLY
JUST WANT TO GET BETTER AND MAKE
MY TEAMMATES BETTER AND BE MORE
WELL ROUNDED THIS YEAR. MAYBE
NOT GO FOR 69 GOALS AGAIN, BUT
GO FOR 50 BUT HAVE 20, 30
ASSISTS, AND IF I'M MAKING
EVERYONE BETTER AROUND ME AND
GETTING THEM THE BALL, THEN I
THINK AS A TEAM WE'RE GOING TO
BE GOOD. NEW SPEAKER: COME ON
SPECIAL OLYMPICS WINTER GAMES
RETURNED TO THE ROCHESTER REGION
IN FEBRUARY. HILL: AS KRISTEN
KLOCK REPORTS, THANKS TO THE
PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE NCAA
DIVISION THREE SCHOOLS AND THE
SPECIAL OLYMPICS, OVER 90 RIT
STUDENT ATHLETES SERVED AS
VOLUNTEERS AT BRISTOL MOUNTAIN.
KLOCK: COULD YOU TELL US A
LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE EVENT GOING
ON HERE TODAY? NEW SPEAKER: YES.
TODAY IS THE NEW YORK STATE
SPECIAL OLYMPICS GAMES. THIS IS
THE ALPINE EVENT HERE AT BRISTOL
MOUNTAIN. WE HAVE ONE EVENT THIS
MORNING, THE GIANT SLALOM OR
OVER HERE IT'S CALLED THE SUPER
GLIDE, AND THEN THIS AFTERNOON
WE'LL HAVE THE SLALOM EVENTS. WE
HAVE 64 ATHLETES COMPETING. WE
HAVE AT LEAST THAT MANY, MAYBE
MORE, VOLUNTEERS HERE HELPING,
SERVING AS GUIDES, HELPING TO
PREPARE THE LUNCHES INSIDE AND
DISTRIBUTE THE LUNCHES AND
REGISTER PEOPLE AND MAKE SURE
THAT EVERYBODY HAS A GREAT TIME.
KLOCK: WHAT GOES INTO PUTTING
TOGETHER AN EVENT LIKE THIS? NEW
SPEAKER: WELL WE START OFF,
WE'VE GOT SKI CLUBS THAT COMPETE
ALL OVER THE STATE AND WE HAVE
TO MAKE A DECISION AS TO HOW
MANY ATHLETES WE WANT TO HAVE
PARTICIPATE AND OFFER A NUMBER
OF SLOTS TO EACH AREA. WE HAVE
TO WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH THE
SKI AREA TO MAKE SURE THAT WE
HAVE APPROPRIATE VENUES FOR
THEM; WE CAN'T USE THE SAME
COURSE AS YOU WOULD FOR THE RIT
TEAM AND WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE
THAT WE HAVE PLENTY OF
VOLUNTEERS SIGNED UP THAT ARE
WILLING TO COME DOWN HERE AND
SERVE AS ESCORTS ON SKIS. SO
THERE'S QUITE A LOT OF PLANNING
THAT GOES INTO IT. NEW SPEAKER:
TODAY OUR STUDENT ATHLETE
ADVISOR COMMITTEE HAS SPONSORED
A TRIP FOR RIT ATHLETES TO COME
OUT AND VOLUNTEER FOR THE
SPECIAL OLYMPICS WINTER GAMES
AND THE NCAA AND DIVISION THREE
HAVE A PARTNERSHIP AND SO WE
REALLY WANTED TO COME OUT AND
SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND KIND OF
GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THAT
ALWAYS SUPPORTS US AT OUR GAMES
AND WE THOUGHT THAT THE WINTER
GAMES WAS A GREAT WAY TO DO
THAT. KLOCK: WHAT WAS YOUR ROLE
HERE TODAY AS A VOLUNTEER? NEW
SPEAKER: TODAY I HELPED OUT, I
WAS A BUDDY TO THE DIFFERENT
ATHLETES AND I'D FOLLOW THEM UP
ON THE COURSE, WE'D RIDE
TOGETHER ON THE CHAIR LIFT SO
THEY HAD SOMEONE TO TALK TO AND
I'D WAIT WITH THEM IN LINE AND
WATCH THEM GO DOWN THE COURSE
AND MEET THEM AT THE BOTTOM AND
WE'D GO BACK UP AND DO IT ALL
OVER AGAIN. NEW SPEAKER: WELL,
WE WENT OUTSIDE BEFORE, AND WE
MADE POSTERS AND REALLY JUST
CHEERED THEM ON AS THEY WERE
COMING IN, BEING LOUD AND
SHOWING THAT WE WERE OUT HERE TO
SUPPORT THEM. KLOCK: WHAT DOES
IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE THE
SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATION OF RIT
ATHLETES? NEW SPEAKER: I THINK
IT'S GREAT. WE WERE IN SYRACUSE
LAST YEAR, WE HAD GOOD SUPPORT
FROM SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY AND
CAZENOVIA COLLEGE AND I THINK
RIT HAS SUPPORTED US HERE IN THE
PAST, AS WELL AS NAZARETH AND
SOME OF THE LOCAL SCHOOLS. WE'RE
VERY PROUD TO HAVE THE STUDENTS
COME HERE AND SERVE AS GATE
GUIDES AND ESCORTS FOR OUR
SKIERS. KLOCK: WHAT ABOUT THE
WINTER GAMES AND VOLUNTEERING
HERE WAS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?
NEW SPEAKER: WELL, I'VE BEEN A
SKIER MY WHOLE LIFE AND BEEN ON
THE SKI TEAM AND I THINK IT'S
GREAT THAT THEY GET TO SHARE IN
THAT FEELING. IT'S SO MUCH FUN
TO GO DOWN AND SKI DOWN THESE
GATES AND THEY DON'T ALWAYS GET
THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT SO
JUST PASSING ON MY PASSION FOR
SKIING I THINK WAS REALLY GREAT.
KLOCK: WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING ON
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE?
USUALLY YOU'RE THE ATHLETE AND
PEOPLE ARE CHEERING FOR YOU. NEW
SPEAKER: IT'S COMPLETELY
OPPOSITE. IT'S GREAT TO SEE THE
JOY ON THEIR FACE WHEN I WAS
ENCOURAGING THEM AT THE END.
THEY'RE LIKE, OH MY GOD? DID I
REALLY DO GOOD? AND I'M LIKE
YES! YOU DID A REALLY GOOD JOB!
IT'S JUST THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE,
WHICH IS A REALLY GOOD FEELING
TO SEE THAT YOU ALWAYS GET
ENCOURAGED, IT'S GOOD TO
ENCOURAGE OTHER PEOPLE. NEW
SPEAKER: IT'S REALLY NICE
BECAUSE YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW THAT
YOU'RE HELPING THESE ATHLETES,
YOU KNOW HOW GOOD IT FEELS WHEN
PEOPLE CHEER FOR YOU SO YOU'RE
JUST PASSING THAT ALONG AND
CHEERING FOR THEM AND IT'S A
REALLY GOOD FEELING. NEW
SPEAKER: IT'S GREAT. AS A
COLLEGIATE ATHLETE WE HAVE
SUPPORTERS COME OUT ALL THE
TIME, BUT THESE ARE THE
OPPORTUNITIES WHERE IT'S NICE TO
GIVE BACK AND BE ON THE OTHER
SIDE OF IT AND IT'S GREAT TO BE
THE ONES SHOWING THE SUPPORT.
DITULLIO: WELL THAT DOES IT FOR
THIS EDITION OF RIT SPORTSZONE.
HILL: DON'T FORGET YOU CAN STAY
UP TO DATE WITH SPORTSZONE BY
FOLLOWING US ON TWITTER AND
LIKING US ON FACEBOOK. DITULLIO:
SO UNTIL NEXT TIME, THANKS FOR
JOINING US IN THE ZONE.
