LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WELCOME TO THE 30TH ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S
CHARITY STEER SHOW. WHAT DO YOU SAY WE START
BRINGING SOME OF THE STEERS IN LEADING THE WAY, THE HONORABLE
GOVERNOR TERRY BRANSTAD. WHEN THE IOWA CATTLEMEN'S
ASSOCIATION AND BEEF INDUSTRY COUNCIL TOLD ME THEY WANTED ME
TO SPONSOR A GOVERNOR'S CHARITY STEER SHOW, I SAID GREAT, BUT I
DON'T KNOW HOW I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO RAISE ONE AT TERRACE
HILL. THEY SAID, WELL, YOU DON'T HAVE
TO RAISE IT, JUST SHOW IT.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, ONCE AGAIN THE PEARSON FAMILY MEETING
LEADING IN A STEER WE CALL "THE BIG SHOW" IN HONOR MY OLD BUDDY,
LONGTIME VOICE OF AGRICULTURE ON WHO RADIO, LONGTIME HOST OF
"MARKET TO MARKET" ON IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION, PLEASE
WELCOME THE PEARSON FAMILY. I KNOW DAD WOULD WANT NOTHING
MORE THAN TO BE HERE FOR 30TH ANNIVERSARY, SO IT MEANS SO MUCH
TO US TO STILL BE INCLUDED AND WHAT A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO
BE HERE WITH FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES.
THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. WE'VE GOT A GREAT STEER.
WE'VE GOT WALKER MCDERMOTT UP HERE LEADING FOR US.
WE'RE LOOKING AROUND. WE GOT A LOT OF GREAT
COMPETITION, BUT I THINK THE MCDERMOTTS RAISED A GOOD ANIMAL.
AT THE GOVERNOR'S REQUEST, THE DESIGNATED CHARITY FOR THE
FIRST-TIME EVENT WAS THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSES OF IOWA, AND
THEY STILL ARE TODAY.
SIXTEEN MONTHS AGO WE HAD TWINS BORN HERE IN DES MOINES.
ONE OF THE BOYS WAS BORN WITH SEVERE KIDNEY DISEASE.
WE HAD TO IOWA CITY FOR SEVENTY DAYS.
THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE REALLY PAID OFF FOR US.
THAT'S YOUR FIELD FOR THE 30TH ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S CHARITY STEER
SHOW. STEVE RADAKOVICH, OUR JUDGE,
OUR FIRST JUDGE AND ALSO JUDGING OUR DIGIT 30TH
ANNUAL PLACED THESE STEERS HERE. I LOOK AT THE DEPTH OF BODY, THE
CAPACITY, LENGTH. YOU CAN TELL ABOUT THE HEIGHT,
TRYING TO GET THEM MODERATE. NOT TOO TALL AND NOT TOO SHORT.
SOMETHING THAT'S BALANCED. YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF BALANCED
TRAITS FROM THIS ANGLE. IT'S BEEN A LOT OF FUN FOR ME,
AND IT'S GOING TO BE A WHOLE LOT OF FUN TO PICK YOUR CHAMPION AND
RESERVE. GET READY.
HERE WE GO. YES.
THERE'S YOUR GRAND CHAMPION, THE PEARSONS OVER HERE.
HOW ABOUT THAT! GOOD JOB.
YOU'RE READY AGAIN. RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION GOES TO
CONGRESSMAN STEVE KING. CONGRATULATIONS, MIKE PEARSON.
BETSY PEARSON SHOWING THE TOP STEER AT THE GOVERNOR CHARITY
STEER SHOW. WHAT'S IF FEEL LIKE?
IT FEELS AMAZING. DAD, I THINK HE'S HAD CHAMPION
THREE TIMES, SO THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN NUMBER FOUR FOR HIM.
THE IOWA BANKERS ASSOCIATION PICKED A HECK OF A STEER FROM A
HECK OF A FAMILY, THE MCDERMOTT CLAN OUT OF ATLANTIC.
THEY DID A GOOD JOB RAISING IT. SO THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A
HECKUVA FAIR FOR HIM. AFTER THE SHOW THE ENTIRE HERD
WAS AUCTIONED OFF. AFTER THIRTY YEARS, THE
GOVERNOR'S CHARITY STEER SHOW BROUGHT IN OVER $2 MILLION AND
BROKE SEVERAL RECORDS THIS YEAR ALONE.
OVER $150,000 FOR THIS YEAR'S SALE, AND THE GRAND CHAMPION
STEER, WHICH WAS SOLD IN MEMORY OF MARK PEARSON SOLD FOR
$30,500.
