One year ago, a group of six kids
came together to make a video
for Better Speech and Hearing Month.
We tried to think of a Jonas Brothers song.
When you look me in the ears...
No!
Well, I've been to the Ear 3000...
No!
Turn your implants up louder...
... NO.
That's Just the Way We Hear!
That's perfect!
Our video, That's Just the Way We Hear,
won first place in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's
YouTube video contest!
It didn't stop there.
To this day,
it has had more than 7,000 YouTube hits.
We had created what some
have called an anthem for kids and teens with hearing loss.
Yet, there were three people we wanted to hear it most:
Kevin,
Joe,
and Nick Jonas.
We tried so hard to get them to see our video.
For a whole year,
we brought lyrics, posters, and videos
to concerts. We tweeted, facebooked, blogged.
We entered contests.
They never saw our video.
But now, with the Battle of the Bands,
the time has come!
I woke up
for school- put my ears on.
Radio plays my song- it's a good one!
And my mom calls to come when the bus comes.
I think how I hold dear,
That now, I can hear!
And I know,
I look a little different.
And I know, we wear things on our ears.
But I know, I'm never gonna fake it.
I am deaf, I am free. I can listen and speak.
I'm implanted, and that's just the way I hear!
I've got ears, hearing aids.
We are hearing.
Bluetooth,
iPod head phones,
cochlear implants.
Seems we all wear things on our ears.
We should hold dear that we can hear!
And I know, I look a little different.
And I know, I wear things on my ears.
But I know, I'm never gonna fake it.
I am deaf, I am free.
I can listen and speak.
I'm implanted, and that's just the way I hear!
'Cause we're smart enough to know
Don't judge what you don't know.
That's just the way
And I know, I look a little different.
And I know, I wear things on my ears.
But I know, I'm never gonna fake it
I am deaf, I am free.
I can listen and speak.
I'm implanted
And that's just the way I hear!
I know I look a little different.
And I know, I wear things on my ears.
But I know, I'm never gonna fake it.
I am deaf, I am free.
I can listen and speak.
I'm implanted, and that's just the way I hear!
Jake: That's just the way we hear!
David: That's just the way we hear!
Sara: That's just the way we hear.
Jason: That's just the way we hear.
Marti Rose, Sara, David, Jake: That's just the way we hear!
Jason, Julie, Daniel: That's just the way we hear!
Dani: That's just the way we hear.
I thought the video
made people realize
that being deaf, you can just
be like everybody else.
It was kids representing other kids.
When it was played for the whole school,
that basically meant that
everyone was starting to understand
what it was like to have cochlear implants.
It also shows kids that they shouldn't
be ashamed of this, and it's okay to be different.
That's what it's all about-
accepting each other.
You have tons of fans with hearing loss.
They need you. We need you.
If you choose our video,
you will be showing kids with hearing loss
who worked so hard to learn to speak,
that their voices are now being heard.
Ultimate prize?
Let's re-record this song together,
and have it played with captioning
for EVERYONE to see and hear!
