Anne Espiritu here with some of this week’s hottest searches in the US on the Google Beat
--
Well, who could have guessed that nine out of the ten top search terms would be about
astrology?! When a Minneapolis-based astronomer proposed revisions to the astrological calendar
and a new Zodiac sign, Ophiuchus, Google saw a peak in astrology-related searches. In fact,
we saw a HUGE spike for terms like [new zodiac], [new zodiac sign], and [ophiuchus].
These topics also dominated Google Hot Trends when the news peaked last Thursday and Friday.
The only non-astrology related search term rounding out this week’s top 10 list was,
not surprisingly, the [golden globes].
Searches for the annual Hollywood awards event, which took place on Sunday, were up over 1,700%
this week. Searches for [golden globes winners] were up 950%. They continued to rise through
Monday as fans searched for information about their favorite stars, including [natalie portman]
and show host [ricky gervais].
A few popular Hollywood stars, [annette benning], [trent reznur], [claire danes], [warren beatty],
and [paul giamatti], all popped up on Google Hot Trends on Sunday, too.
And what's an awards show without chatter about fashion on the red carpet? [golden
globes fashion] was a hot search term this week.
On Saturday specifically, [teresa scanlan], the [miss nebraska 2011] who was named [miss
america], made the Google Hot Trends list. Other search terms related to last week’s
pageant include [miss america contestants] and [miss america pageant].
This Monday, Google honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Google
Doodle. On the same day, we also saw searches for [martin luther king quotes] pop up on
Google Hot Trends as people searched for some of his most poignant remarks.
Well, that’s it for this edition of the Google Beat. I’m Anne Espiritu, thanks
for tuning in.
