ACTIVISTS WANT THE STATE TO INVESTIGATE THE COSTS.
BOB FILNER HIRE AS REPUBLICAN FOR HIS TEAM AFTER CARL DEMAIO HIRED A DEMOCRAT FOR HIS.
WHAT'S BEHIND ALL THESE PARTY CROSSING LINES? >> >>PEGGY: COMING UP I'LL INTRODUCE YOU TO
UC SAN DIEGO'S NEW CHANCELLOR. HOW YOU CAN GATE SPECTACULAR VIEW AT THE NEW
MARS ROVER LANDING AT THE RUBEN H.FLEET SCIENCE CENTER.
>> >>DWANE: AND MUSIC CAN BE A GREAT MOTIVATOR A.SAN DIEGO COMPANY HAS CREATED AN APP TO
HELP YOU FIND THE PERFECT SOUND TRACK FOR YOUR WORK OUT.
KPBS EVENING EDITION STARTS NOW. >> >>DWANE: HELLO, GOOD EVENING, THANKS FOR
JOINING US, I'M DWANE BROWN. FOR THE SECOND TIME STATE REGULATORS ARE POSTPONED
A HEARING OVER THE TROUBLED SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.
THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION WAS SUPPOSED TO VOTE TODAY ON WHETHER TO ORDER THE PLANT'S
OPERATORS TO DISCLOSE THE POTENTIAL ECONOMIC IMPACT.
SAN ONOFRE HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN SINCE JANUARY BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH TUBES IN ITS STEAM
GENERATORS. THE BILL SO FAR, 165ハMILLION DOLLARS CONSUMER AND ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS
WANT THE PUC TO INVESTIGATE. AN ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP IS GIVING POOR GRADES
TO MOST OF THE SAN DIEGO CITY COUNCIL. THE LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS RELEASED ITS
ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT CARD TODAY. CARL DEMAIO GOT AN F, AND SO DID COUNCILMAN
KEVIN FAULKNER. THE LEAGUE GAVE A D MINUS TOハ SHERRI LIGHTNER AND TONY YOUNG EACH
GOT A D. DAVID ALVAREZ RATED C MINUS. THE BEST GRADES
WENT TO TODD GLORIA AND MARTI EMERALD. SANDERS DOESN'T HAVE A VOTE BUT HE WAS GRADED
ON HIS POSITIONS. SAN DIEGO'S MAYOR'S RACE IS CRANKING UP AFTER
A COUPLE OF QUIET MONTHS. TOM SHEPHERD HAS JOINED THE CHAMPAGNE OF DEMOCRAT
CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR BOB FILNER. KATIE ORR HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE STORY AND
JOINS US FROM THE NEWS CENTER. REMIND US WHO TOM SHEPHERD IS, AND WHY IT'S
A BIG DEAL HE'S JOINING THE FILNER CAMPAIGN. >> >>KATIE: SHEPHERD IS A LONGTIME REPUBLICAN
CONSULTANT IN SAN DIEGO. HE'S GIVEN CREDIT FOR GETTING THE LAST FIVE
MAYOR'S ELECTED AND WAS RUBBING THE MAYORAL CAMPAIGN OF REPUBLICAN TURNS INDEPENDENT ASSEMBLYMAN
NATHAN FLETCHER. IT WAS A BIT OF A SHOCK TO THE POLITICAL WORLD
THAT SHEPHERD WOULD ACTIVELY HELP A DEMOCRAT WIN THE MAYOR'S OFFICE.
SHEPHERD TOLD UT SAN DIEGO HE THIRNGS CARL DEMAIO WOULD BE TERRIBLE FOR THE CITY.
HE SAYS HE'S LIKELY TO LOSE CLIENTS AS A RESULT OF HIS DECISION, BUT POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR
CARL LUNA SAYS THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD DECISION FOR SHEPHERD IN THE LONG RUN.
>> >>DWANE: SHEPHERD ISN'T THE ONLY CONSULTANT CROSSING PARTY LINES IS HE?
>> >>KATIE: NO, CARL DEMAIO HAS HIRED DEMOCRATIC CONSULTANT ART TO WORK ON HIS CAMPAIGN.
CARL LUNA SAYS IT'S REALLY NOT UNUSUAL FOR CONSULTANTS TO SWITCH PART AS.
HE SAYS GETTING A WIN IS SO IMPORTANT MANY DON'T MIND GOING BACK AND FORTH, THEY JUST
WANT TO WORK WITH THE CANDIDATE THEY THINK HAS A GOOD SHOT WINNING THE RACE.
>> >>DWANE: KPBS METRO REPORTER, KATIE ORR. AN ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
KILLED A SAN DIEGO STATE STUDENT AT A FRATERNITY HOUSE.
HE OVERDOSED ON OXYCODONE AND A GENERIC FORM OF XANEX.
THE FRATERNITY'S TEMPORARY SUSPENSION HAS BEEN LIFTED.
MAYOR MAYOR WAS REPORT UDLY FOUND IN THE BODY OF A SAILOR KILLED IN A YACHT RACING CRASH
LAST APRIL. TRACES OF THE DRUG WERE FOUND TBHIE SAN DIEGO
COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER, THE RACING YACHT SMASH UNDER TO AN ISLAND OFF THE MEXICAN COAST.
FOUR PEOPLE WERE KILLED, THE COAST GUARD IS STILL INVESTIGATING.
AIRPORT SECURITY SCREENERS HAVE THEIR FIRST COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT.
THE DEAL COVERS NEARLY 45,000 WORKERS WITH THE TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION
OR TSA. UNION LEADERS SAYS IT CREATES A NEW PROCESS
FOR RESOLVING DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS. TSA WORKERS WERE GRANTED LIMITED UNION RIGHTS
LAST YEAR, BUT THEY CAN'T STRIKE OR STAGE WORK SLOWS DOWN.
FORMER GOVERNOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER WANTS TO PASS ALONG HIS SEVEN YEAR POLITICAL EXPERIENCE
SO HE'S JOINING WITH UUFC, SCHWARZENEGGER INSTITUTE FOR STATE AND GLOBAL POLICY.
HE SAYS HE'LL RAISE $20ハMILLION TO FUND THE THINK TANK.
IT WILL FOCUS ON INTELLIGENT AND CIVIL DISCUSSION TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.
UC SAN DIEGO HAS A NEW CHANCELLOR, PEGGY PICO INTRODUCES US AND FINDS OUT HIS PLANS FOR
DEALING WITH A SHRINKING BUDGET. >> >>PEGGY: IN THE PAST FEW YEARS THE UC SYSTEM
HAS SEEN DEEP CUT BACKS FROM THE STATE THAT HAVE RESULTED IN FEWER CLASS OFFERINGS AND
HIGHER TUITION FOR STUDENTS WHILE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS HAVE TRIED TO PREVENT A DOWNWARD
SPIRAL AND PRESERVE ITS REPUTATION AS ONE OF THE TOP PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY.
PRADEEP KHOSLA IS UC SAN DIEGO'S NEW CHANCELLOR. HE'S HERE TO TALK ABOUT HIS GOALS AND HIS
JOB. YOUR FIRST DAY WAS ON WEDNESDAY, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
>> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: I STARTED MY DAY AT 7:30ハA.M. AND FINISHED AT 10:30ハP.M. THE GOOD THING
ABOUT THE DAY IS I WAS TIRED AND READY TO SLEEP.
IT WAS VERY EXCITING. WE HAVE AN AMAZING INSTITUTION OUT HERE IN
SAN DIEGO. >> >>PEGGY: AND YOU MET WITH STUDENTSハ
>> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: I MET WITH STUDENTS, I MET WITH FACULTY Y HAD DINNER WITH A DONOR,
I MET WITH ALUMNI THAT ARE IMPACTING SAN DIEGO ECONOMY YOUR FORM POSITION WAS DEAN.
>> >>PEGGY: YOUR FORMER POSITION, DEAN OF CARNEGIE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, A MUCH SMALLER
INSTITUTION, UC SAN DIEGO IS A LOT BIGGER. HOW IS THAT GOING TO IMPACT HOW YOU DO YOUR
JOB HERE? >> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: I'LL HAVE TO THINK IN
TERMS OF HOW TO SCALE MY THINKING FROM ABOUT 10,000 STUDENTS IN ALL OF CARNEGIE MELLON
TO ABOUT 30,000 IN UC SAN DIEGO. BUT ACTUALLY MORE LIKE 3,000 IN ENGINEERING
I'LL HAVE TO GET USED TO THE FACT THAT I'M IN A PUBLIC INSTITUTION AND NOT IN A PRIVATE
INSTITUTION WHERE THE REGULATIONS AND THE FRAME WORK IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.
BUT THE GOOD THING IS OUR MISSION IS THE SAME. >> >>PEGGY: YEAH, YOUR MISSION IS THE SAME
HOW SO? >> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: WE ARE THERE TO EDUCATE,
TO CREATE KNOWLEDGE, TO EDUCATE HIGH QUALITY, HIGH CLASS UNDER GRADUATE STUDENT POPULATION
WHO'S GOING TO GO OUT THERE AND BE A WORLD CITIZEN.
WE DO THE SAME AT UC SAN DIEGO. >> >>PEGGY: TUITION AND FEES ARE SUBTLY RISING
ACROSS THE UC SYSTEM. THE BOARD OF REGIONS REGULATES THIS AT THE
UC SYSTEM. IS THAT ANYTHING YOU CAN CONTROL OR WILL YOU
HAVE AN IMPACT ON THOSE TUITIONS? >> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: I WISH I COULD SAY I
CAN CONTROL IT, BUT MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT IS DONE AT THE OFFICE OF THE PREZ DENT'S LEVEL.
TO THE EXTENT I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INFLUENCE I KNOW WHICH WAY I WANT TO INFLUENCE IT, DOWNWARDS.
>> >>PEGGY: SEVENTY% TUITION INCREASES IN FEES IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS BECAUSE OF THOSE
TUITION RAISES AND CUT BACKS, YOUR SALARY, 411,000 HAS RAISED SOME EYEBROWS AND THE STUDENT
HAVE SOME CONCERNS. WILL THAT BE AN ISSUE FOR YOU?
>> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: I THINK I UNDERSTAND THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS ANGST IN TERMS OF
HOW MUCH THE TUITION HAS GONE UP. IN MY MIND, THE REAL ISSUE IS HOW ARE WE GOING
TO INCREASE OUR FUND RAISING EFFORTS AND PHILANTHROPY SO GOING FORWARD THE TUITION HIKES ARE NOT
THAT HIGH. SECONDLY, IT'S IMPORT TONIGHT UNDERSTAND THAT
IN THE UC SYSTEM, NEARLY ABOUT 40% OF STUDENTS PAY NO TUITION BECAUSE OF THE CALIFORNIA BLUE
AND GOLD PLAN IN THE UC SAN DIEGO CAMPUS, 60% STUDENTS HAVE FINANCIAL AID OF SOME SORT
OR THE OTHER. MY GOAL IS TO WORK HARD TO MAKE THAT POT BIGGER.
>> >>PEGGY: YOU MENTIONED SOME OF YOUR PLANS TO RAISE MONEY, THE GOVERNOR'S TAX INITIATIVE
IF IT DOES NOT PASS IN NOVEMBER WILL MEAN A 35ハMILLION DOLLAR BUDGET CUT TO UC SAN
DIEGO. ARE YOU PREPARE FOR THAT WITH YOUR ENDOWMENT
PLAN? >> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: UM I WISH I COULD SAY
YES, BUT IN A MART OF SIX MONTHS YOU CANNOT RAISE ENOUGH ENDOWMENT TO COMPENSATE FOR A
35ハMILLION DOLLARS CUT. WE'LL HAVE TO THINK ABOUT OTHER STRATEGIES
TO MANAGE THE 35ハMILLION DOLLAR CUT. WITH THAT SAID, I'M HOPING AND PREYING EVERY
SECOND THAT THE INITIATIVE DOES PASS, WE WANT IT TO PASS FOR THE GOOD OF THE STATE AND FOR
THE GOOD OF THIS COUNTRY. >> >>PEGGY: YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY?
>> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: MY NUMBER ONE PRIORITY WOULD BE IMPROVING THE STUDENT EDUCATION EXPERIENCE.
THAT SHOULD BE OUR FOCUS, WE SHOULD NEVER LOSE CITE OF THAT FACT. THE FACT WE NEED MONEY
IS NOT FOR THE SAKE OF THE MONEY, IT'S FOR THE SAKE OF A HIGHER QUALITY FACULTY, FOR
THE SAKE OF MAKING AN IMPACT ON THE LOCAL ECONOMY.
>> >>PEGGY: IT DOES HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE LOCAL ECONOMY MY FAR, INTO THE MILLIONS, RIGHTS?
>> >>PRADEEP KHOSLA: TO THE BILLIONS. UC SAN DIEGO IS THE LARGEST EMPLOYER BASED
IN SAN DIEGO, ABOUT 27,000 EMPLOYEES, 30,000 STUDENTS, CONTRIBUTES ABOUT 20ハBILLION PLUS
TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY, HAS ABOUT 150 COMPANIES THAT CREATE ABOUT 15,000 JOBS FOR THIS LOCAL
ECONOMY. >> >>PEGGY: THANK YOU SO MUCH, DR.ハKHOSLA.
>> >>DWANE: CAMPERS FROM SAN DIEGO, THE INLAND EMPIRE AND ORANGE COUNTY MADE THEIR WAY TO
CORONADO. PART OF THE BURN INSTITUTE'S CAMP BEYOND THE
STARS PROGRAM. SOME OF THESE KIDS HAVE NEVER BEEN EXPOSED
TO SURFING, SAILING, OR EVEN KAYAKING BEFORE. MORE THAN 70 CAMPERS RANGING IN AGE FROM 5
TO 17 ARE HERE. IT'S ONE OF THE FEW CAMPS IN THE COUNTRY,
OFFERING KIDS SUPPORT AND A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT THEIR INJURIES AND WHAT THEIR THEY'RE
GOING THROUGH. >> >>: MAYBE THEIR FRIENDS DON'T KNOW HOW
TO REACT. >> >>DWANE: JESSICA HAS GROWN UP WITH THE
CAMP. THIS IS HER NINTH YEAR AFTER SUFFERING SEVERE
BURNS TO HER BACK WHEN SHE WAS JUST SEVEN YEARS OLD.
>> >>: WE WERE MAKING SOUP Y WAS TIRED SHE TOLD ME NOT TO GET DOWN Y DIDN'T LISTEN LIKE
A LITTLE KID DOESN'T USUALLY, AND I KNOCKED IT DOWN ALL OVER THE FLOOR AND I WAS PRETTY
MUCH TAKING A BATH IN IT. >> >>: MOST CAMPERS ARE INJURED THROUGH CUP
OF NOODLES OR PULL DOWN ACCIDENTS FROM STOVES. THE POOL WATER, SWIMMING POOL IS SOOTHING
FOR THEM, AND A BEAUTIFUL DAY AT THE BEACH IS GREAT FOR NEM.
>> >>DWANE: ARNIE GARCIA KNOWS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO THROUGH THE FIRE AND HAS THE SCARS TO
PROVE IT. BURNED ON BOTH LEGS TRYING TO PUT OUT A VEHICLE
FIRE. >> >>: I'VE BEEN DOING IT FOR 19 YEARS, I'M
A BURN SURVIVOR 29 YEARS. I WAS BURNED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AT SAN DIEGO
FIRE. TEN YEARS AFTER THE BURN Y FOUND THE BURN
INSTITUTE IN 1993, AND BECAME INVOLVED AS A COUNSELOR INITIALLY, AND THEN EVENTUALLY
A CAMP DIRECTER. >> >>DWANE: ALTHOUGH GARCIA IS A MENTOR, HE
SAYS IT'S A TWO WAY STREET. THE ROAD TO RECOVERING FROM A SEVERE BURN IS TOUGH, BUT SEEING THE
SMILE ON THEIR FACE DZ SPITE THE INJURY IS INSPIRATIONAL.
>> >>DWANE: AND WHEN UC FIRE FIGHTERS ON THE CORNER WITH A BOOT TRYING TO RAISE MONEY,
IT'S FOR CAMPS LIKE THESE. THE BURN INSTITUTE PUTS ON CAMP BEYOND THE
SCARS EVERY SUMMER IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY. CAPTIONS PROVIDED BY ECAPTIONS.
>> >>DWANE: THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL SAYS MOST ADULTS SHOULD GET ABOUT 150 MINUTES
OF MODERATE EXERCISE A WEEK. THAT'S A TALL ORDER FOR SOME FOLKS TO FIND
THE TIME AND MOTIVATION TO DO IT. THAT'S WHY A SAN DIEGO COMPANY HAS COME UP
WITH A NEW SMART PHONE APP TO HELP OUT. KPBS REPORTER CLAIRE TRAGESER GIVES USA LOOK.
>> >>CLAIRE: YOU MIGHT NOT THINK AN 80S ROCK BALLAD COULD MAKE YOU A BETTER RUNNER, BUT
WILL TURNER SAYS IT DEFINITELY CAN. >> >>: A FEW YEARS BACK I RAN MY FIRST MARATHON.
THIS WAS A TIME BEFORE THE SMART PHONES LIKE IPHONES AND ANDROID PHONES WERE AVAILABLE.
I SAW SOME PEOPLE RUN WITHING MP3 PLAYERS AND IT MADE ME WONDER IF IT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE
TO CREATE AN INTERNET SERVICE TO HELP A PERSON IDENTIFY THEIR TARGET PACE OR TARGET TEMPO
AND ATTAIN THAT TARGET PACE OR TEMPO WITH EXERCISE.
>> >>CLAIRE: THE 38 YEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST NEED AD BOOST, SO HE TURNED TO SAN DIEGO'S
SPORTS ININNOVATORS. THE UC SAN DIEGO PASTY J HE LAUNCH AD WEB EXPIET SMART PHONE APPS
TO MATCH MUSIC WITH A RUNNER'S PACE. SINCE PACE DJ LAUNCHED LAST YEAR, APPLE RECOGNIZED
IT IN THE NEW AND NOTEWORTHY CATEGORY ON ITS WEBSITE.
TURNER GAVE ME A QUICK RUN DOWN OF HOW THE TWO DOLLAR APP WORKS.
>> >>: YOU TOUCH THE ICON ON YOUR PHONE AND THE APP WILL ASK YOU WHAT ACTIVITY YOU'RE
INTERESTED IN DOING, AND YOU CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN RUNNING, WALKING AND CYCLING.
LET'S JUST SAY WE CHOOSE RUNNING. THE APP WILL START YOU OUT AT A DEFAULT RATE
OF A STEP RATE 160 STEPS PER MINUTE OR BEATS PER MINUTE.
>> >>CLAIRE: WHILE THERE ARE SIMILAR APPS TO MATCH YOUR PACE, TURNER SAYS PACE DJ IS
DIFFERENT. >> >>: WE'RE A HIGHLY PERSONALIZED SERVICE,
WE PUT CONTROL IN THE USER'S HANDS TO OPTIMIZE THEIR TARGET PACE OR TEMPO.
>> >>CLAIRE: I'VE COVERED HUNDREDS OF MILES SINCE I STARTED RUNNING AFTER COLLEGE AND
LISTENED TO MUSIC FOR MOST OF THEM. WHEN I TRIED OUT THE PACE DJ APP ON MY PHONE
T SAID MOST OF THE MUSIC I USUALLY LISTEN TO IS SLOWER THAN MY RECOMMENDED 158 BEATS
PER MINUTE, SO I WENT TO THE PACE WEBSITE AND DOWNLOADED SOME OF THE SONGS THEY RECOMMENDED
INCLUDING HIGHWAY TO THE DANGER ZONE. >> >>: YOU'RE EXERCISING AND THERE'S NOTHING
TO DISTRACT YOU. WHAT YOU HAVE IS BASICALLY YOU CAN SIT THERE
AND LIS TOON YOUR HEART POUNDING, YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE PERCEPTION OF FATIGUE AND
THE EFFORT, SO MUSIC BECOME AS GOOD DISTRACTER. >> >>CLAIRE: FABIO IS AN EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST
WHO WORKS FOR THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SPORTS MEDICINE.
HE SAYS THERE'S A UT OF EVIDENCE THAT MUSIC CAN HELP YOU WRONG LONGER OR MAKE YOU FEEL
LESS TIRED THAN YOU REALLY ARE. AND HE SAYS MUSIC AT THE RIGHT TEMPO CAN DISTRACT
YOU FROM THE PAIN OF EXERCISING AND AMP YOU UP.
IT HELPS SO MUCH IN FACT THAT HE SAYS SOME RACES IN THE US TRACK AND FIELD ASSOCIATION
HAVE BANNED MUSIC IN PART BECAUSE ITS EFFECTS ARE ALMOST LIKE TAKING A PERFORMANCE ENHANCING
DRUG. >> >>: IT DISTRACTS PEOPLE FROM THE EFFORT
SO THEY FEEL LIKE THEY CAN WORK OUT WITH LESS EFFORT.
WE CALL IT AN ERGOGENIC AID. >> >>: I DON'T RUN MUSIC MAINLY BECAUSE I
FIND IT REALLY DISTRACTING. YOU KNOW, I LIKE FOCUS, ON CERTAIN THINGS
Y LIKE TO FOCUS ON MY FOOT STRIDE, ON MY POSTURE, I LIKE TO FOCUS ON MY BREATHING, MAYBE IF
I'M CARRYING ANY TENSION WITHIN MY BODY F I REMAIN THE MOST RELAXED I CAN POSSIBLY BE.
I LIKE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE THINGS. THOSE THINGS REALLY MATTER WHEN YOU'RE REALLY
DIGGING DEEP, SO TO SPEAK. AND MUSIC JUST TAKES AWAY FROM THAT.
>> >>CLAIRE: IF HE'S LISTENING TO MUSIC, IT MESSES WITH HIS PACE.
>> >>: WHEN I LISTEN TO MUSIC, I FIND THAT WHENEVER I HEAR A CERTAIN SONG OR WHATEVER
THAT HAS A CERTAIN TEMPO, MY CADENCE KIND OF GRAVITATES TOWARDS THE THAT TEMPO WHICH
IS AN UNDESIRED RESULT. >> >>CLAIRE: PACE DJ FOUNDER TURNER INFLUENCES
A LOT OF PEOPLE. IF PEOPLE DON'T RUN ALREADY, MUSIC MIGHT MAKE
GETTING STARTED A LITTLE LESS PAINFUL. >> >>: AN APPLICATION LIKE PACE DJ CAN BE
USEFUL TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY ACTIVE. THEY CAN FIND BENEFITS IN USING THE APP TO
INFLUENCE THEIR WORK OUT. BUT IT MIGHT ALSO BE HELPFUL TO PEOPLE WHO
ARE NOT AS HEALTHY AS THEY WANT TO BE, MAYBE THEY WANT TO LOSE SOME WEIGHT.
THEY CAN TURN TO AN APP LIKE PACE DJ AS A TOOL TO GET STARTED AND HAVE SOME FUN AND
START EXERCISING MORE. >> >>CLAIRE: HERE'S ONE THING I KNOW FOR SURE,
IF I KEEP RUNNING WITH THE MUSIC AT THE BEAT PACE DJ RECOMMENDS I'LL HAVE TO FIND SOMETHING
BETTER TO LISTEN TO THAN THE THEME SONG TO TOP GUN.
>> >>DWANE: KPBS REPORTER CLAIRE TRAGESER. PACE DJ IS AVAILABLE ON ANDROID AND THE IPHONE.
NASA EXPECTS THEIR MARS ROVER TO LAND ON THE RED PLANET SUNDAY NIGHT.
PEGGY TELLS US ABOUT THE RISKY MISSION AND WHERE YOU CAN WATCH IT LIVE ON THE BIG SCREEN.
>> >>PEGGY: THIS LANDING OF THE MARS ROVER NAMED CURIOSITY IS THE KIND OF HAIR RAISING
THING YOU'LL WANT TO WATCH LIVE BECAUSE ITS SUCCESS IS NOT A SURE THING.
PREVIOUS SPACE CRAFTS HAVE BEEN LOST WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON MARS, THEN THERE'S THE
MUST MAKE YOUR MARK LANDING AND THE RELATIVELY TINY THREE MILE TARGET ON THE RED PLANET.
AND IN THE TWO AND A HALF MILLION DOLLAR PRICE TAG, YOU'VE GOT A HIGH STAKES MISSION AND
A RARE AND EXCITING ONE THAT YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY CAN WATCH LIVE AT THE RUBEN
H.FLEET SCIENCE THEATER. DR.ハLISA WILL, RUBEN H.FLEET RESIDENT ASTRONOMY,
AND JERRY HILLBURN, NASA SOLAR SYSTEM LAB PROFESSOR THE CURIOSITY TOOK OFF FROM EARTH
IN NOVEMBER. WHAT'S HIS MISSION?
>> >>JERRY HILLBURN: IT'S GOING THERE TO STUDY THE SURFACE OF THE PLANET FOR GEOLOGY TO DETERMINE
ITS CHEMICAL MAKE UP TOORKS CHARACTERIZE THE WEATHER PATTERNS OP THE PLANET, TO DETERMINE
THE RADIATION LEVELS, AND TO ALSO SEE WHAT THE WATER IS LIKE, IS IT CLOSE TO THE SURFACE,
IS IT IN THE MATERIALS ITSELF. THE MISSION IS DESIGNED TO DETERMINE 24 HOUR
AS DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK FOR THE TWO YEARS IT'S ON THE SURFACE WHAT CONDITIONS ARE LIKE
IN PREPARATION FOR SENDING ASTRONAUTS TO THE PLANET.
WE NEED TO KNOW IF IT'S SAFE. >> >>PEGGY: WE'RE GOING TO COME BACK TO THAT,
BECAUSE I WANT TO TALK ABOUT SENDING PEOPLE TO MARS.
FIRST DR.ハWILL, THE FLEET SCIENCE THEATER SHOW AS FEW FILMS THAT DETAIL THE DANGEROUS
PARTS OF THIS MISSION. >> >>LISA WILL: THE LANDING ITSELF IS THE
MOST DANGEROUS PART OF THE MISSION. ONCE THE SPACE CRAFT ENTERS MARS, IT WILL
EXPERIENCE THE SEVEN MINUTES OF TERROR, BECAUSE IT WILL BE OUT OF TOUCH WITH MISSION CONTROL.
MARS HAS A VERY THIN ATMOSPHERE, BUT IT'S STILL ENOUGH THAT YOU HAVE TO ENTER THE ATMOSPHERE
AT JUST THE RIGHT ANGLE, BUT ALSO IT'S NOT A THICK ENOUGH ATMOSPHERE TO SLOW THE SPACE
CRAFT ENOUGH TO LAND SAFELY ON ITS OWN. SO THERE WILL BE A PARACHUTE DEPLOYED DURING
THIS 7 MINUTES AND ALSO SOMETHING THAT IS A SPACE CRANE WHICH WILL BE THE FIRST TIME
THIS HAS EVER BEEN ATTEMPTED DURING A MISSION LANDING ON MARS THAT WILL HELP CONTROL THE
DESCENT UNDER POWER OF THE SPACE CRAFT TILL IT LANDS.
>> >>PEGGY: THERE'S ROCKET BOOSTERS TOO, RIGHT, TO LIFT IT UP?
>> >>LISA WILL: YEAH, THERE'S ROCKET BOOSTER ONS THE SPACE CRANE A.SPACE CRANE WILL BE
DEPLOYED WITH THE ROVER UNDERNEATH. THE CRANE ITSELF WILL HAVE ROCKET BOOSTERS
THAT WILL CONTROL DESCENT AND THE CRANE WILL DETACH LEAVING THE LANDER ON THE SURFACE AND
THE CRANE WILL FLY A SAFE DISTANCE AWAY BECAUSE THEY'RE WORRIED THAT THE ROCKETS WOULD ACTUALLY
KICK UP SO MUCH DUST THAT YOU WOULD COVER THE INSTRUMENTS ON THE ROVER ITSELF.
>> >>PEGGY: WE CAN'T HAVE THAT. THE SEVEN MINUTES OF TERROR, THAT IS WHEN
NASA WILL HAVE NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE ROVER AND WE WON'T BE ABLE TO SEE THAT PART AT THE
FLEET. >> >>LISA WILL: WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE
TIME, WE'LL BE SHOWING THE NASA FEED, PEOPLE'S REACTIONS AT MISSION CONTROL AS THEY'RE WAITING
JUST AS WE'LL BE WAITING ALONG WITH THEM. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS IF THE ROVER LANDS SUCCESSFULLY,
IT WILL COMMUNICATE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES TO A SPACE CRAFT THAT IS ORBITING AROUND MASH
R MARS CURRENTLY AND THAT SPACE CRAFT WILL GIVES US A SIGNAL THAT IT HAS SUCCESSFULLY
LANDED. WE SHOULD KNOW WITHIN TWO MINUTES OF 1031
PT ON SUNDAY. >> >>PEGGY: WE'LL BE GETTING THE NASA FEED
AT FLEET AND WHATEVER IMAGES NASA IS FEEDING BACK FROM THE ROVER.
>> >>LISA WILL: WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS THAT THE SPACE CRAFT NEEDS TO SORT OF UNPACK AND TEST
ALL OF ITS INSTRUMENTS. SO THERE WILL NOT BE SUDDENLY IMAGES OF MARS
SHOWING UP FROM THE ROVER ON SUNDAY NIGHT, BUT MONDAY MORNING DEFINITELY THERE WILL BE.
WHAT WE WILL BE SEEING SUNDAY NIGHT IS WHETHER THE MISSION WAS A SUCCESS.
>> >>PEGGY: JERRY, BEFORE WE GET TO PUTTING ASTRONAUTS ON MARS, THAT WAS A SURPRISE, SCIENTISTS
AT NASA HAVE SAID THAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY NOT LOOKING FOR LIFE ON MARS, THEY'RE LOOKING
FOR THE INGREDIENTS OF LIFE ON MARS. WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?
>> >>JERRY HILLBURN: THE IDEA IS THAT WE WANT TO STUD THEA PLANET'S SURFACE TO DETERMINE
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLANET'S SURFACE FOR PEOPLE WHO MIGHT EVENTUALLY BE LIVING
THERE. THE EQUIPMENT IS NOT REAL DESIGNED OR SET
UP TO GO OUT AND DETECT WHETHER OR NOT THERE'S LIFE ON MARS.
IT ISハ ITS MISSION, ITS PURPOSE IS TO GO OUT AND DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT A HUMAN BEING
MIGHT BE ABLE TO SURVIVE ON MARS DOWN THE ROAD.
>> >>PEGGY: THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.
THE CURIOSITY LIVE VIEWING AT THE RUBEN H.FLEET SCIENCE THEATER IN BALBOA PARK IS THIS SUNDAY
NIGHT, DOORS OPEN AT 7:30ハP.M., TICKETS ARE 5 DOLLARS FOR CHILDREN AND UP TO 10 DOLLARS
FOR ADULTS. CAPTIONS PROVIDED BY ECAPTIONS.
>> >>PEGGY: IN TONIGHT'S PUBLIC SQUARE COMMENTS ABOUT CHICK FIL A'S PRESIDENT DAN CATHY'S
STATEMENT ABOUT SAME SEX MARRIAGE LINGER ON. THIS HOME VIDEO INSIDE A SAN DIEGO CHICK FIL
A YESTERDAY WHERE MANY CUSTOMERS TURNED OUT TO SHOW SOLIDARITY TO CATHY'S COMMENTS THAT
HE SUPPORTS "THE DEFINITION OF THE BIBLICAL FAMILY UNIT."
THE SAME SEX KISSING PROTEST IS PLANNED TOMORROW. CHICK FIL A SAYS THEY TREAT EVERY PERSON WITH
HONOR, DIG NEAT AND RESPECT REGARDLESS OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION.
IT GOES ON TO SAY "OR INTENT IS TO LEAVE THE POLICY DEBATE OVER SAME SEX MARRIAGE TO THE
GOVERNMENT." RACHEL SCHOMA EXECUTIVE DIRECTER FOR CANVAS
FOR CAUSE HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT TOMORROW'S NATIONAL KISS DAY PROTEST.
SHE SAID "THEY SAID SOMETHING HATEFUL THAT HURT A LOT OF PEOPLE AND WE'RE GOING TO BE
RESPOND WITHING LOVE AND SOLIDARITY." TO COMMENT ON THIS STORY AND OTHERS FOLLOW
US ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK, OR E MAIL US AT PUBLIC SQUARE @ KPBS.ORG.
>> >>DWANE: AND YOU CAN FIND TONIGHT'S STORIES ON OUR WEBSITE KPBS.ORG/EVENINGEDITION.
THANKS FOR JOINING US, HAVE A GREAT NIGHT. CAPTIONS PROVIDED BY ECAPTIONS.
