None of us really knows what the future holds.
But one thing is certain – change is happening all around us.
By planning and focusing our resources, we can influence this change.
And I’m asking you to join me as we begin the process to determine the direction for NOAA.
We must ask ourselves:
What trends will shape our future?
What challenges or opportunities will we face?
What should NOAA strive to accomplish?
And what are the next steps?
As our climate and economic conditions change, we must be able to deal with those external factors,
while continuing to be the nation’s trusted source of environmental science.
One of my top priorities is the development of NOAA’s Next Generation Strategic Plan.
to reset the course for the agency
The plan will reassess and renew our mission, our vision, and goals -
and this in turn will drive our work and our partnerships
We will develop the Plan in a way that ensures we have good options
and the analysis to support strong decisions.
We will include inputs from the broad array of experts in NOAA
and from our wide stakeholder community.
I invite you to think imaginatively, and broadly.
Draw on your personal and professional experiences.
Unleash your passion, and hopes and ideas,
and participate actively.
You can make a difference in defining the strategic challenges NOAA faces,
setting our priorities and generating the benefits that NOAA can bring to society.
Visit NOAA’s strategic planning Web site and take the time to complete the survey.
I thank you for contributing and for helping to chart NOAA’s future.
